1st generation g5 FAN NOISE!!!!

Ever since this machine has come out of the box the 4 fans around the cpu's have been on at full blast.
When I remove the air deflector the cpu fans spin down and the harddrive fan spins up but the whole machine is quieter than with the deflector.
any thoughts???

Hi just_julie, and a Warm Welcome to Apple Discussions and the Power Mac G5 Forum!
When you say "Ever since this machine has come out of the box", what does that mean? Presumably you haven't suffered the roaring fans for 2 1/2 years... has it been in the box all that time? Have you just bought the G5 used - Have you transported it in the box? Have you changed anything recently?
You could try a PMU reset - at the bottom of the page here (referred to as an 'SMU') - under "Power Mac G5 (Late 2005)"
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300341
You may not have to remove the intake fan assembly to get at the button. Observe static precautions and make sure to press the button once only. Remember to correctly re-locate the clear plastic deflector panel in its slots.
If that doesn't help, you could try running Hardware Monitor
http://bresink.com/osx/HardwareMonitor.html
and check what the CPU temperatures, and CPU Intake and Exhaust fan speeds are in the Sensor Overview window. Where Upper and Lower Limits have been specified they will also be shown in the Sensor Overview window.
As a reference, this DP 2, of almost the exact same vintage, has CPU [Die] temperatures of around 115deg F with just Hardware Monitor running when 'Processor Performance' is set to 'Automatic'. The CPU fans are mostly in the 300-400 RPM.
If the G5 has been in use for the 2 1/2 years, you could check that there is not a build-up of dust in the cooling fins for the processor heat-sinks. Removing the intake fan assembly may make it easier to see through the fins. A torch /flashlight may help, also.
Please post again with any further info you have.

  • Where is my 1st generation ipod nano replacement?

I sent in two 1st generation ipod nanos that qualified for the replacement program. I received one two weeks after I sent both in, through fedex. I'm still waiting for the second one, and it's been 3 months already. The website said it takes up to 6 weeks. I haven't received any emails or messages relate to this problem. Fedex received both ipods and I still have the receipt to prove it. What's going on?

I called apple and tried to find out what happened. Turns out everything was going smoothly until it reached their end. I tracked it with fedex and it said it was delivered to a city in california. The guy I was talking to said apple would get back to me in a couple of days, because they, "have to set up an investigation". It's been a week and 3 days. I'm a big apple fan, but this whole situation is really disappointing.

  • 1st generation IPOD Replacement waiting on shipping container never arrived???

Back on Nov 13th I contact Apple to get my 1st Generation IPOD Nano replaced because there is a Recall on same. I provide all the required information and I was informed online that Apple would be sending me a packaging and instructions on how to return it. And there was a time limited that I would get this within 2 days it has been over 10 now and I have nothing yet. And there is no simple way to Contact them but to call them and now that it suggested I only have "10 Days" to return it I am wondering why there is limited time and after supplying Apple with all the required info including serial number I get an email the following day suggesting that it might cost me a fee just for them to check the IPOD to see if it is included in this Replacement / Recall. And because I have songs on it I had to copy them in case they do replace otherwise I would lose those I all ready purchased. And have not had the opportunity to call them they need a means to email them to contact them about this because I have gone through their support and there is no simple way to get info all I get is the automated telling me my service etc is expired but how if I never got the pack and shipping info to have the ability to return it?
Apperas no me they are putting a time limit to make sure they don't have to do anything because waiting on Apple is not what I thought I would be doing I bought an apple because of the "Name" but now I am truly getting Disappointed with this matter and Apple... Not what I expected from Apple...

  • Mac Mini 1st Generation no video

    Hi,
    I have the following problem:
I own a 2005 1st Generation Mac Mini (1.25Ghz 80GB 512MB). The problem is it won't show any video signal on my monitor which is connected via DVI and works perfect when connected to my other computer. When turning on the Mac Mini I can hear the startup chime and fan. The Indicator light on the front side is light up aswell and the optical drive is also working.
There is no system on the harddrive. I took it out and formatted with my macbook, selected "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" and "GUID Partition Table".
I tried to insert the OSX Leopard Install DVD but it the screen is still off (Standby) when I turn the Mac on.
    Summary:
The Mac Mini has a working:
    startup chime
    fan
    indicator light
    optical drive
    but
    no video
    no OS on the harddrive
    hope someone can help me.
    Thanks
    Ferdinand

  • Late 2013 15" rMBP fan noise even on 2D games

    Hello,
I have the latest model Apple Macbook Pro 15" with retina display. I'm using the basic model with 8gb ram, 256gb ssd, Haswell i7 cpu with integraded Intel Iris Pro 1gb gpu.
The problem is about the fans. I have never played a game on my mac before two months ago. Since then, when I play the fans get noisy and in a few minutes they start to spin at max rpm about 6000.
I have talked to Apple Customer service and they made me do it sth. like SMC, PRAM etc. However, it didn't fix anything, then I handle my mac to the nearest Apple Store.
They cleaned it and checked the system, according to their said the system works fine. I got it back today and whenever I came, I tried and it happened again.
Just for an instance, I launched "Bridge Constructer Free" game and wait for about 3 minutes. After all, the fans were spinning at over 6000 rpm but meanwhile the system was not hot, it was a bit cool, just about 45 celcius degree.
On the other tasks, like web surfing, playing a full HD video or daily things, it works perfect. I've never heard the fan noise and feel the heat. Otherwise, on nearly every game I played, it happened. Although the system is under 50 celcius degree, the fans used to spin at max rpm.
Also we tried the same thing but it didn't happen on my friend's late 2013 13" rMBP.
This thing really irritates me because it leds to a such noise. Without taking earphones on, I am not able to use the mac comfortably.
Can you help me to solve this issue please?
    I'm adding a screenshot below to see the values;

I am not sure of the thermal limit for the haswell processors, but for Intel's previous generation processors installed in the rMBP lineup, the thermal limit was 100C (212F). Extended exposure to temperatures exceeding this could damage the CPU. What software are you using to manually control the fans? I wouldn't recommend manually controlling the fans. Let the internal heat sensors do their thing. Your rMBP will shutdown if the processor reaches dangerous temperatures for extended periods of time. I wouldn't say that this behavior is abnormal given the amount of heat your GPU generates when rendering graphics intensive games. Just make sure to keep the fan vent unobstructed at all times and a cooling pad never hurts.
Uninstall the software you are using to manually control the fans, reset the SMC, test and see if temperatures fall:

  • Dreaded fan noise is BACK!

I can't believe my ears, but the same fan noise from my 20" G4 iMac is now BACK in my iMac 20" CoreDuo!! It took much longer to rear it's ugly head, but I can clearly hear the "fan wobble" coming from the iMac. This time, it's louder as well. MUCH louder. It can be heard over music or with most low background noise.
Has anyone else experienced this wobble noise? This is terribly annoying.

If your signature information is up-to-date then your new Mac is not. Have you installed the Firmware 1.0.1 update? The SMC Firmware update? The OS X 10.4.6 update? As well as the various updates to the installed software that came with your Mac? These address various issues that have cropped up in the 1st six months of Mac Core Duos.
    They are located here.
    Apple Downloads
Before anything else it would probably be best to manually download the two firmware updates and install one at a time. The SMC Firmware update requires OS X 10.4.6 be installed first. Please follow the instructions carefully and exactly.
The SMC Firmware update specifically was issued to address power issues, such as the fans.
Software Update in the Apple menu can handle the software updates just fine.

  • 1st Generation iPod Touch No Longer Recognized by Windows 7 PC

I have a 1st generation iPod Touch (no camera) that can no longer connect to my Windows 7 pc. Plugging in the iPod via USB does not trigger any sort of dialog box in Windows and it doesn't trigger a message saying a device has been connected; the iPod does not show up in either iTunes, Computer, Device Manager or Devices and Printers, either as an Apple mobile device or an unrecognized device, and does not charge when connected to USB (though the wall-charger still works). As far as my computer is concerned this iPod does not exist. I had successfully synced this iPod as recently as one week ago and am ready to pitch the thing in the garbage if I can't find a solution.
I have the latest version of iTunes as well as the most up-to-date Windows updates. I have already followed all the steps listed here (iOS: Device not recognized in iTunes for Windows) multiple times with no success.
I also have tried following the instructions listed here (Re: For those Windows users who suddenly cannot see their device in iTunes. Here's a solution that has worked.) but this also hasn't worked since the iPod isn't recognized in the Device Manager and I am not given the option of updating the drivers, manually or otherwise.
I have uninstalled/re-installed iTunes and all related Apple services multiple times. The Apple Mobile Device Service is functioning normally. iTunes diagnostics indicate that there is no device connected no matter what I do. I have reinstalled my Windows USB drivers and changed the settings on the USB Root Hub in the Windows Device Manager to disable power saving options.
I have tried connecting the device to another PC which detects and syncs another apple device (iPhone 5) with no issues, and had the exact same result: the computer doesn't even recognize an iPod is connected.
I can't update the Apple Mobile Device Drivers because the device is not recognized by my machine in any way.
I even completely reset my iPod and that just left me with a unactivated iPod that still isn't detected.
I am really unbelievably fed-up with the useless "try checking your USB cable"-style advice that people seem to offer on this forum. If anybody has dealt with this issue and has any serious advice other than "re-install iTunes," it would be much appreciated.

You said "I am really unbelievably fed-up with the useless "try checking your USB cable"-style"
    - Did you try another cable?
    - Inspect the dock connector on the iPod for bent or missing contacts, foreign material, corroded contacts, broken, missing or cracked plastic.

  • IPad (1st generation) Not Syncing With iCloud

A friend of mine has a 1st generation iPad (64GB, Wi-Fi + Cellular) from May 2010. She has iOS 5.1.1 installed on it, which is as high as you can go on the 1st generation iPad.
She also her a MacBook and an iPhone, and she wants all three devices to sync (e.g. Notes and Calendar) via iCloud. The MacBook and the iPhone are syncing fine, but the iPad won't sync.
Is this simply a case of iOS 5.1.1 no longer being compatible with iCloud, or specifically, devices running iOS 7 (her iPhone) and OS X Mountain Lion (her MacBook Pro)? Any suggestions?

    Hello Reuben,
Thank you for providing the details of the issue your friend is experiencing on her iPad.  I found some resources to help with this.
First, the following article provides a table of what version of iOS software you need for different iCloud features.  Several iCloud services are still available to use with iOS 5:

  • 1GB 1st Generation iPod Nano USB Device Not Recognized on any computer

I just recently received a free 1st generation 1GB iPod nano from a friend because they couldn't get it to work. I figured I'd take a crack at it and hopefully get a working, free iPod out of the deal...
It already had music loaded on it (mostly a bunch of garbage), so like anyone else in my position I proceeded to reformat the little sucker and wipe its slate clean.
Here is what happens when I try to connect the nano to ANY computer:
Here is how the nano shows up in device manager:
This was the original problem I was having with my desktop PC which is running Windows XP Home with SP2 and all the latest Windows updates. It is running iTunes 7.5.0.20, w/ latest iPod updater software version 1.2.3.
Prior to testing the 1st gen. 1GB iPod nano, I had been charging and syncing my 5th generation 60GB iPod classic on my desktop PC using the same exact cable. All of my USB ports are in working, functional condition and order. I even have “Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power” unchecked under USB Root Hub Properties.
I tried a couple different USB ports and I used another cable, no luck. So I moved on to my Fujitsu laptop running Windows Media Center Edition, all latest Windows updates, same version of iTunes and iPod software (the difference being that I DO NOT sync any iPods to it, nor do I have any music on it). SAME EXACT PROBLEM, same message bubble, same entry in device manager, and same lack of driver availability.
Thinking maybe it’s just a “PeeCee” thing I dug out my old PowerBook G4 running the ancient Mac OS 10.2. Keep in mind this thing only has a 400 MHz G4 processor, 512MB RAM, 30GB hardrive, and USB 1.1 ports. The iPod nano wouldn’t even give a hint that it existed when I plugged it in.
I have tried every single little Apple trick available. I’ve done the forced restart while connected and while not connected to the computer. I’ve done forced disk mode while connected and while not. I’ve run iTunes diagnostic tests on connected devices. I’ve messed with USB port settings. I’ve tried two different USB 2.0 iPod cables. I tested my dad’s 8GB 2nd generation iPod nano to see if it linked up with my desktop and my laptop IT DOES. I even tried my 60GB 5th gen iPod classic OVER AGAIN to see if it still worked, IT DOES.
Also, this 1st gen iPod nano will not charge when hooked to the computer through USB. When I plug it in, between the time it’s plugged in and when the “USB device recognized” bubble pops up the battery icon shows it is charging, but as soon as that bubble pops up it disappears and discontinues pretending to charge.
On my Fujitsu laptop, I uninstalled everything having to do with Apple. I uninstalled iTunes, Apple Software Update, everything. Restarting after it all of course. Then I installed the old iPod Software Updater from 6-28-2006. I was pretty sure this wouldn’t work because the iPod isn’t even recognized by the computer. In order for the iPod to work in the iPod Software Updater or iTunes it has to first be recognized at the basic Windows level. Which it isn’t…
I have done research all across the net and the only real answer I found was that the iPod Nano’s internal USB controller is dead. I’m 99% sure it has nothing to do with my laptop, desktop, USB cables, software, or drivers. What do you guys think?

Nope I have not figured anything out since I posted this. The closest answer I've found is that it's the internal USB controller which has gone bad. If that's the case than there is really nothing more I can do.
I did find one opening and that was the diagnostic screen. You get to it by holding down the Menu and Center buttons, as soon as the iPod resets hold down the Left and Center buttons, the iPod will beep and then it will go to a diagnostic screen. Maybe somewhere in there you can find the problem I don't know how to use it though.

  • 1st generation time capsule painfully slow

I've been dealing with this issue for some time now.  I've searched all over the internet for a solution, and I've yet to find anything that works.  I'm hoping a Time Capsule expert may be able to help me sort this problem out.
I have a 1st generation, 1tb Time Capsule.  I've had one since they first were released.  Use already had one fail from the dreaded dead power supply issue that was affecting many 1st gens after reaching 18 months old.  This one is less than a year old.
I have Verizon Fios with a blazingly fast Internet connection.  When I plug directly in to my ISP's router via Ethernet, my connection is amazing.  I realize that wifi connections are much slower than Ethernet, but what I've been dealing with lately is ridiculous.
I believe the problem lies with the Time Capsule.  It's set to 801.11n, 5ghz only, maximum throughput (24mbps), WPA2 personal security, latest firmware.  Wifi connections via the TC are great at first, but they seem to degrade as time goes by until I finally have to reboot the TC, then the speeds are back up to normal again for a while.
The problems also seem to arise whenever a computer is backing up to the TC.  I understand that speeds might slow down while a backup is occurring, but I would expect that they would return to normal when the backup is complete.  Unfortunately, the speeds often slow down so much that the backup never actually finishes, and often it comes up with an error saying that the disk is no longer available.
Trying to share a file between my macs is often impossible.  Even a small file, say 5mb, can take minutes to transfer between to wifi-connected devices.  Sometimes a TC reboot with fix this, other times it won't.
My setup is like this - Verizon router with wifi disabled, serving as the DHCP router for my entire internal network, connected via Ethernet to my Time Capsule and an Airport Express.  The Time Capsule is set up in bridge mode and serves as the 802.11n wifi source for my newer wifi devices.  The Airport Express is also set up in bridge mode and serves as the 802.11b/g wifi source for my older wifi devices.
Due to the nature of the Fios service, I can't have the Time Capsule set up as the DHCP distributer for the network.  However, even when I didn't have Fios and the Time Capsule was set up as the dhcp distributor, I suffered from these slow connection issues.
Are the 1st generation TCs plagues with issues?  Is it just time for me to get a new one?
Any help or insight would be greatly appreciated.

Unfortunately, you are experiencing one of the downsides to 5 GHz. That's because the higher frequency 5 GHz signals are much weaker than 2.4 GHz signals.
After all, you always have to give up something to gain something else. In the case of 5 GHz, you gain potential speed but in return, you must give up penetration power and distance capability.
In order to work well, 5 GHz signals need to almost have a line-of-sight relationship between devices. Unless you can achieve this, you will do much better to leave the Time Capsule running at the 802.11n (b/g compatible) 2.4 GHz Radio Mode and allow the Express devices to "extend" that network.
As for the location of the AirPort Express devices in an exended network, that is critical for best performance. That's because the Express can only "extend" the quality and bandwidth of the signal that it receives. Post back if you need a few more tips on how to find the best location for the AirPort Express devices.
Would the new airport extreme fix the problem?
    Unfortunately, no.
