Please can anyone help? My brother has given me his old iPod 1st Gen 30GB. It has loads of music on it that I love and don't want to lose however there is quite a bit of stuff that I really don't want. How can I remove the songs I don't like without having to reset the iPod and lose the songs I do like. I'm sure there's an easy answer but I just can't figure it out!!
Hi there, there doen't seem to be any option to "select songs and videos" so this hasn't helped I'm afraid. I guess I'll just have to accept the fact that I'm going to have to reset and lose the lot.

Hey everyone,
i have a what i believe is a 1st generation ipod nano ( it's blue )(??) and i had it connected with itunes on another laptop ( windows based ). That laptop died and i recently purchased a new MacBook. So i tried to connect my ipod to the Macbook today but i can't seem to get it to work, i have purcahsed a bunch of songs through itunes that are on the MacBook and i'd like to add them into my ipod.
Is this possible? or because i used my ipod for an older computer am i not able to put the existing songs on my ipod into my MacBook and vice versa, MacBook songs onto the old ipod???

Thanks!I have an actual 1st generation ipod and am having a similar problem. I had a windows based laptop, which my nano worked on. When I bought my iMac in December '07, I reformatted my ipod to use with my mac. After restoring my ipod, I added some songs and used it for a few days before I got a message telling me that I must restore my ipod. I don't know why the message appeared, but I connected my ipod and restored it again. After that, however, my Mac no longer recognized my ipod in Disk Utility, iTunes, or Finder. I've tried using other Macs, no luck, Windows computers (which actually recognize that something is connected, but it doesn't know what), but nothing seems to work. My ipod turns on fine, I can do everything except add/remove music. It will charge if I plug it in, the entire menu system works. I've done the all the tests in Diagnostic mode and everything seems to be fine, but it still doesn't work. >.<
Any help will be greatly appreciated. -
1st Generation iPod problem - folder icon/exclamation!
Any help would be appreciated. I have a 1st generation iPod and it has worked fine since 2002. The battery seems fine and have had no problems with it until yesterday. When I connected my iPod via firewire to my Mac, iTunes wouldn't recognize it. Then, I tried to reconnect the firewire cord and still nothing. So I went with the 5 "R's" . I tried to reset it, then that's when it started. The apple icon came on and then the folder icon + !. I then went through all 5 "R's" and it never did reset or restore or anything. Any combination of buttons I push on it, I get the apple icon for a couple of seconds and then the folder icon + ! and then it goes blank. I can't put it in disk mode or anything. It does the same thing every time. I don't think it's the battery b/c it was charged and the charge time was still very good. anyone with any history on this may be able to help! THANK YOU!
I'm not sure about not sync'ing properly, but plug in your earphones and your volume bar should re-appear.
Maybe if you give more info on what's happening when you try to sync, someone will be able to offer more assistance. -
1st generation ipod won't download music
My firend just bought a 1st generation ipod and was only able to download a couple songs. He asked me if I could try and download some of my music on it cause I have a 20GB ipod of my own that works perfectly fine. But when I plug it in it just sits there and wont respond while I watch the little spinning circle so then I cant use my mouse. I already had to shutdown my computer to get my itunes to start working again. I dont know what to do with it...help!

If it's a 1st (or 2nd) gen shuffle, select it in iTunes. Toward the top of the iTunes window, there are two buttons that say Settings AND On This iPod. The Settings screen is probably what you already used, "to set certain options." Click on On This iPod. This screen shows a list of songs that are currently on the shuffle, and you can use this screen to remove songs from the shuffle (and change song order), once you have songs on it.
At the bottom of this screen, there are Autofill controls. That is one way to load the shuffle. You can "automatically fill" the shuffle from your iTunes music library, or from a playlist.
To add individual songs, drag songs from your iTunes library and drop them on the shuffle. The easiest way to do this is to use the iTunes sidebar (along left side of iTunes window). If the sidebar is hidden, from the iTunes menu bar, under View, select Show Sidebar. Find the shuffle in the sidebar, under the heading DEVICES. From your iTunes library, drag songs (or other audio items) and drop them on the shuffle. -

I have a 1st generation Ipod, and when I downloaded the newest update all my music was lost from previous purchases on my 1st generation ipod, plus all the Cds i downloaded as well. How do I get my Itunes purchased songs back. As the older music does not show up in my purchase file?
Everything should be on your computer and you should always have a backup copy of your comptuer.

I have a 1st generation ipod, which I love. When I plug it into my computer an image of a disk with a magnifying glass appears (disk scan). When it finishes the scan it always checks out. I then restart it and all looks fine. Each time I plug it in to the computer it does the same thing and it wont show up on my computer. The other strange thing is all of the songs are gone from the ipod but the disk space is still being used. When the ipod is not plugged into the computer everything look fine even the correct date shows up. Any ideas????? Thanks

The Genius playlist and the 1st Generation ipod touch
I am just wondering, is the genius playlist ability not available to the 1st Generation iPod touch or does it only work on certain songs?
Because it would be really annoying if they limited to the 2nd Generation iPod touch only.Another post here said to just go ahead and resync your iPod and it should start working. And it did for me. If that does not work make sure that genius is enabled on your iTunes, otherwise it will not add the functionality to your iPod.

I get a message "The Itunes server could not be contacted, check your internet connection" when trying to check for Ipod Nano software updates. I have a 1st generation Nano and haven't updated the software for a while. My internet connection is working. Was thre a change in the internet address for NANO software updates? Do I have to reconfigure something in Itunes to point to the correct address?
What version of iTunes are you using? The latest is 10.6.3. In iTunes, choose Help -> About iTunes to check the version number. If it's lower than 10.6.3, download the latest version from here.

Hey, I bought the 1st generation Ipod touch when it fisrt came out. We did not have Internet at home at the time till just recently so I never used it, I went to use My Ipod but I had already forgotten my passcode to it when you first turn it on. I did all the steps on other sites such as Unplug it and replug it in the computer and hold down the Home button, It popped up Itunes like it did when i first turned it on when i first bought it, So idk what to do after that, I jus want to be able to get back on my ipod. HELP lol

You can work through the five 5 R's of troubleshooting to rule out the possibility of corrupted software.

It might also be a good idea to let the iPod's battery fully drain. Then charge it back up and restore it once more in iTunes.
Otherwise, it's likely a hardware issue with the iPod's LCD display, meaning you'll need to take or send your iPod in for service either via Apple or a third party repair service. Here is Apple's repair pricing.

Note that they don't actually repair the device, but exchange it for one of the same generation, model, and capacity. A third party service will actually replace the damaged part for a little less. Google "iPod screen repair" and you should get a number of results to work with.
