1st generation iPod not recognized by iTunes 9

Hullo:
Recently upgraded to iTunes 9 and found that it doesn't recognize my iPod Shuffle (1st gen). The iPod shows up on My Computer, and it still plays and charges when connected, but it simply never appears on the Devices tab on iTunes (in fact, the Devices tab itself never appears).
Thus far, I have tried re-installing iTunes (following the full uninstall procedure listed on the Apple - Support section), deleting my temp files, restarting the computer after unplugging all USB / external devices, and installing an older version of iTunes (iTunes 8).
No dice.
Is there anything else I can try? It seems the most common answer to this problem is, "Install an older version of iTunes," but iTunes 8 did not recognize my iPod either (I'm thinking it was because my oldest saved playlist is from when I had already installed iTunes 9, so I don't actually have any saved iTunes 8 playlists) (might be wrong, though).
Please help?
Thank you.

Similar problem here. =(
Plugged in my old 2nd gen (10Gb) iPod into iTunes 9 this morning and all I get is the "OK to disconnect" message.
Which is a huge shame. This iPod is exactly seven years old this month, and I used it all the way up until last year to when I bought my iPhone. It's a testament to Apple's old hardline stance on quality over price, and the fact that they'd oust these models through lack of software development is disappointing.

I have a new PC, which now very unfortunately runs Windows Vista as an operating system - I have installed iTunes latest version 7.4 but still the PC does not recognize my iPod or doesn't find the hardware - can anyone help?

  • First generation iPod not recognized by iTunes

I recently acquired a first generation iPod, (2001), which appears to be in excellent condition. It has a few dozen songs on it and it played them for over 4 hours before I stopped it with the battery icon still showing 3 bars. My problem is I can't get it to be recognized by iTunes. I tried it first with my current intel iMac and the finder wouldn't even show it although disk utility did. I then tried it on a 10 year old iMac G5 running OS 10.5.8 and iTunes 10.6.3. itunes still won't recognize it but it shows up in the finder as an iPod icon with a firewire icon and the ipod also shows the same when connected to the computer. I think this means that it is in disk mode but I can't get out of it. I've tried every step in the Apple suggestions to no avail. I really want to put my own music on this iPod but obviously can't do anything until I can get iTunes to recognize it.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

  • Help - My 5th Generation Ipod not recognised by ITunes but 1st Gen Ipod is!

Can anyone help? This is driving me mad!
I recently purchased a 5th Generation 80gb Ipod. Before installing to my PC I downloaded the latest 7.2 version of ITunes together with quicktime. However whenever I plug my new Ipod in, nothing happens other than the 'Found New Hardware Wizard' appearing in XP asking for the driver to be installed and the Ipod Charging/displaying that it is fully charged.
I have spent hours going through the apple site and following their suggestions on this and have done the following:
    Re-started the iPod service
Uninstalled and re-installed ITunes 7.2 (at least 5 times now!)
Deleted all my temporary folders and temp internet folders and cleared cookies, files, etc
Ran Windows Install Cleanup Utility to clean up any leftover installer files
Tried the Ipod in all of my USB 1 & 2 ports (My MESH PC is less than a year old)
I then contacted Apple Support who suggested I try my Ipod on another computer and if it didn't work to return it to them. So I duly installed iTunes (7.2) on my laptop at work and hey presto my Ipod was recognised and I was able to download a few tunes.
I glean from this that there can't be a fault with the Ipod itself??
Back at home I re- tried all of the things above and then after still no joy I connected my old 1st generation ipod to my pc and after some time ( at least 5 minutes) iTunes recognised the old ipod and syncronised. Using the same USB Port and the same cable I plugged in the new Ipod but still nothing happened other than being asked to install the driver once again!
Now all would be fine if I kept my music collection on my work laptop but unfortunately this is not possible and I could even get into serious trouble for having iTunes on there.
If anyone has any suggestions I would be really grateful as £200+ is a lot of money to pay for something that does not work!

The "driver" never was available from Apple. The driver files that Windows uses to communicate with an iPod are standard Windows OS drivers for a USB Mass Storage Device. If Windows cannot/does not recognize your iPod at all, not even at the driver level, it's likely an OS issue, unless the iPod fails to work on another computer as well. At that point you'd been dealing with a bad cable or bad iPod. Since another iPod works with the same cable, then it should be fine.

  • Ipod nano 1st gen is not recognized in itunes 10

I updated my computer system to leopard 10.5.8 as well as the latest itunes 10. I bought a new ipod nano 6th gen, and it syncs and works fine. The problem I have is my old Ipod. It is detected by my power mac on the desktop only the icon it has is a folder, and when I open it is in blank. I open Itunes 10 and it doesn't appear. And I tried to follow the instructions on apple support, tried all ports, tried reseting the ipod, and it is still not showing up on itunes. Can someone help me with this please?
Also, a white line showed up on the screen, does that mean the screen is broken? I can still see everything going on normally on the ipod but not where the line comes up (middle of the screen).

I have a 1st Gen iTouch that I cannot seem to get iTunes to recognize.
About a week ago I re-named it in iTunes, cleaned it up, and performed a sync.
Used it until the battery was low, and re-charged using my wall charger. Now, when I connect to the laptop, is is not recognized at all...
I have tried the following to no avail:
    Re-install iTunes
    Stop/Start the Apple Mobile Device
    Try a different USB cable
Re-boot the laptop with USB devices not plugged in
Force the iTouch into recovery mode (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1808)
Try to connect using a different laptop
It still charges when connected to my wall charger. I have a 2nd gen iTouch that connects just fine (charges & connects to iTunes). I don't what the problem could be?! This iTouch is 1.5 years old and work great apart from this issue. Can anyone help?
