1st Generation Nano Crashes Leopard

Basically what the subject says. My 1st generation nano works fine with my older iBook running Panther, but when I connect it to my MacBook, my computer crashes.
It is using software version 1.3.1 and have reset it from the iBook. My iPhone syncs fine.
Ideas?

I thought that it said two days too, but if you re read the e mail it says that it will be returned to Appple in 2 business days. The return label is underneath of the original, There are perforations the top that you need to tear off to get to the label underneath and keep the top one as a reciept.
I wasn't sure about the plastic bag either, so I just put the nano in it then in the foam hole in the box.
The clear sticky is about 6 pieces of tape to seal the box with. Be careful pulling it apart you can think you have just one piece but it is really like three pieces. I sent mine off today and have been wondering what they are replacing them with.

I get a message "The Itunes server could not be contacted, check your internet connection" when trying to check for Ipod Nano software updates. I have a 1st generation Nano and haven't updated the software for a while. My internet connection is working. Was thre a change in the internet address for NANO software updates? Do I have to reconfigure something in Itunes to point to the correct address?

What version of iTunes are you using?  The latest is 10.6.3. In iTunes, choose Help -> About iTunes to check the version number. If it's lower than 10.6.3, download the latest version from here.

Is there a way to erase all content on a 1st generation nano without connecting to my pc?

No, you need to connect it to a computer running iTunes to manage the iPod's content (or erase it).

They're supposed to send you a box with shipping instructions which you then use to send them your 1st generation iPod, however, I've been waiting a month for my box and can't figure out why I have not received it

If not where I can purchase a 3rd generation lanyard?  Thanks for everyones help!

You aren't required to do so. You can choose not to use the speaker dock or you can return the Nano.

  • Why my 1st generation nano earbuds not working with 6th generation nano?

    Hi there,
I had a 1st generation iPod Nano and Apple just replaced it with a 6th generation nano, however the earbuds jack of my 1st gen does not fit all the way into the 6th gen, it leaves a tiny bit outside and I couldn't push it all the way in, though I could hear sounds through the earbuds.  Is there anyone out there that experience this?  I thought the earbuds connector is universal.
Also, I'm not sure if this is related to the earbuds not fitting all the way in.  My new Nano shuts itself off about 1 minute or 2 after I turn it on, I am thinking it may think there is no earbuds connected to it, could this be why?
    Thanks for any help!
    Ray.

Push harder, the headphone jack on the 6 is very tight when new.

  • Can't sync 1st generation nano with iTunes 11

The upgrade to iTunes 11 happened today without my consent, and now I'm finding that when I plug in my 1st gen nano to be synced, I can't find the device anywhere in iTunes and the iPod never stops syncing. Is there a fix?
I love my 1st generation iPod nanos, and Apple doesn't offer anything with its form factor anymore (small, light, controls you can use without looking). Also 3rd gen and later nanos don't work with accessories that I depend on for my car and home (they won't charge). I recently bought my second 1st gen from Amazon (used). If my iPods stop working, I'll probably ditch iTunes and iPods altogether and switch to some other device/library/purchase ecosystem.

Honestly, I probably would, except Apple doesn't make an iPod like the one I have anymore. The new nanos have touch screens, and when I asked at the Apple Store whether it's possible to work them without looking (like in the car), they told me that I should go on-line and buy an older, refurbished iPod nano. Which I did, just a couple months ago. And now it doesn't seem to work with iTunes anymore. (And then there's also the fact that I won't be able to play a new nano in my car, but that's a longer story.)
This is the price of buying into a closed ecosystem with few device choices, and this may be the last straw for me. Apple may think it's being smart by making money off unnecessary upgrades, or maybe in the cost/benefit analysis they decide it's not worth making their new software backward-compatible with their own devices. But I was a good Apple and iTunes customer, and if I manage to find an alternative to iTunes/iPod, they won't get me back.
Heck, if I can't find an alternative, maybe I'll do a start-up and build one.

  • 1st generation nano problems....help greatly appreciated!!

i have a first generation nano, and i plugged it in to my computer last night and it said something about needed to scan for problems...then it popped up my F drive saying that i needed to insert something into the F drive....
i have tried three different cords to hook up my iPod to my pc...I tried another usb port...so i am assuming that it is either my computer, the iTunes or the iPod...regardless of what it is, my iPod wont update. and when it says it is updating it's not.
i am running a much older version of iTunes, the one that came on the cd with the first gens...i think 7.2..cant remember, and i have a Vista OS. could THAT be what causing issues? i usedto have it hooked up to an XP and it worked fine, then when I changed it over to the Vista pc, everything went to pot.
Does ANYONE know what to do?? I would appreciate any help, i really dont want to have to buy a new iPod if at all possible...

This forum is for 3rd generation nano problems, not 1st.

  • Dockable ipod - 1st generation nano

I recently bought an Emerson clock radio with ipod capabilities. I am unable to make my 1st generation ipod nano work with this unit. There is no audio when the ipod is placed in the dock. I returned that one and bought another brand, only to have the same situation. I was readin the specs of another ipod clock radio and it mentioned that even if I didn't have a "dockable" ipod it had the necessary accesories to make it work. Is that why my 1st generation ipod nano did not work with the other 2 clock radios? Is the 1st generation ipod nano not a "dockable ipod"? I would appreciate anyone's help. I would like to buy another one but want to make sure I have one that will work with my ipod.
    Thanks

  • 1st Generation Nano Replacement

Does anyone know what generation nano Apple will be giving to people who send their old 1st gens back in through the replacement program due to the overheating problems?

I just completed the recall paperwork on the apple site, so here are a few answers to the posts on this discussion:
    (1) It is not clear which model iPod Apple will provide as a replacement.  Apple is not specifying this, so it appears we will not find out until someone who receives a replacement posts to this forum.
    (2) You do not have unlimited time to take advantage of this exchange.  Once you complete the recall info online, Apple will send you a return box to send back your iPod, which they say you will receive within 2 business days.  You then have 10 business days to get your iPod back to them, or the exchange is canceled.
And here is some very ambiguous language from the email received from Apple after completing the recall info online:
Apple may charge you a diagnostic fee, including shipping charges, of no more than one hundred ($100) dollars US, plus applicable tax, if Apple inspects your product and determines based on the inspection that the product does not require service. If Apple determines, while inspecting your product, that service is needed due to the failure of parts that are neither supplied by Apple nor Apple-branded, Apple may return the product to you without servicing it, and may charge you the diagnostic fee plus applicable sales tax.
You are entitled to a written estimate of the cost of repairs. The estimate must include all costs for parts and labor. Apple will not charge for work done or parts supplied in excess of the estimate unless you, the customer, approve the additional charge. This estimate of repair charges is valid for 30 days from the date of estimate. You must notify Apple if you claim a tax exemption and provide Apple with a tax exemption number at the time you receive this estimate. The cost of shipping is included in the estimate.
This makes it sound like you could be on the hook for $$ if they receive your iPod and find nothing to be wrong.  Obviously, under a recall program this shouldn't apply, but why Apple has to include convoluted messages like this is a mystery, and bad form.
Overall, they're not doing a great job being very clear about what to expect once you send back your iPod, which is a drag because if you're like me you might want to keep that 1st generation iPod as a memento to a true innovation.  I sure do not want to be surprised by finding a new generation iPod in the box when I receive it back.

  • Are we able to trade 1st generation nanos in for newer ones

i have a 1 st generation nano are we able to go to an apple store and trade it for a newer one

I did it and it took about 6 days from the time I filled out the form to the time I received my brand new nano in the mail

  • How do I play my 1st generation nano via fm transfer

I want to know what products will work for this older generation nano so I can play it in my car.

Hello and Welcome to Apple Discussions.
The music should be in your iTunes library. Open iTunes to configure what's put on your iPod touch.
If you had the +iPod nano+ set to manually managing music and have been deleting it out of iTunes after copying it to iTunes (not a scheme I could ever recommend) then you'll have to re-rip or re-import the music to iTunes.

  • TS1373 I have a 1st generation Nano, and I have a sad iPod icon, and it seems like my battery won't charge either.  I guess it's too old.  Anyway if I buy a new iPod will I be able to transfer my songs and playlists to the new one easily?

I have a older Nano, I think I got it in 2004 or 2005 and I have a sad iPod icon, and it seems like my battery won't charge, the low battery icon appears but never seems to do anything.  If I buy a new iPod will I be able to transfer my songs and playlists to the new one easily?  Thanks.

If you are using automatic syncing to load the iPod, all songs on the iPod are in your iTunes music library.  So, you won't need to transfer anything from the old nano.  Just sync the new iPod from your iTunes library the same way.
If you use the Manually manage music setting, AND there are songs on the iPod that are not in your iTunes music library, you will need to off-load songs to your computer first.  You cannot transfer song files from iPod to computer using iTunes (except for songs purchased from the iTunes Store).  However, there are third-party methods and utilities that can transfer from iPod to computer.  If you do a Google search on something like "ipod transfer" you should get some links.
Also, if this is a 1st gen iPod nano, you can check this article to see if it applies to you
