1st generation won't transfer songs from iTunes without factory reset

Hi, my 1st gen won't transfer newly purchased songs from iTunes. I've tried checking for downloads but it checks and states "just checked for downloads"
Also attempted restarting, but that didn't help. Only way I can get it to transfer is a factory reset.

ones had an issue a bit like that with my 1g Apple TV what fixed it for me was to unpair the computer in the appletv settings and then rebind it
sure it took ages to sync everything over again but it fixed it
think I've done it 2 times over the years

Via syncing by selecting Sync Music under the Music tab for your iPhone sync preferences with iTunes followed by making your selections under the Music tab followed by a sync, or if you want to manually transfer music from your iTunes library, select Manually manage music and videos under the Summary tab for your iPhone sync preferences with iTunes. With manually manage selected, select and drag music from your iTunes library to your iPhone under Devices in the iTunes source list.

This forum is for questions from those managing sites on iTunes U, Apple's service for colleges and universities to post educational material in the iTunes Store. You'll be most likely to get help with this issue if you ask in the general iTunes for Windows forums.
When you repost, please include full details about your setup, including the version of iTunes and iOS you're running, and a full description of the problem, so that people have sufficient information on which to base suggestions.

  • Removing songs from itunes without removing them from ipod

Is it possible to remove songs from iTunes without removing them from iPod? When I attempt to delete songs from iTunes I get a warning that they'll be deleted from iPod as well. I've got Manually manage music and videos checked under Options in the Summary window.

You can delete songs from your iTunes/computer hard drive after transferring them to the iPod, and for this you need to set your iPod to manage the iPod content manually.
However, this is an extremely risky option because when (and not if) there comes a time to restore your iPod, which is a very common fix for iPod problems, then all the music would be erased. If you no longer have the music in iTunes (or any other back up), then all that music would be lost.
What if the iPod were lost/stolen/needed repair? Again, the music would lost. I strongly recommend a back up, and if computer hard drive space is in short supply, you should seriously consider an external hard drive. They are not expensive, and the cost is well worth it when compared to the loss of all your precious music.
At the very least back up your music to either cd or dvd before deleting it, particularly any purchased music/videos, as this would have to be bought again if it were lost. See these about backing up media.

Music from iPod to computer (using option 2). This a manual method using "hidden folders" and although it works, it can be messy.
Much easier ways are to use one of the many 3rd party programs that copy music from the iPod to the computer.
One of the most recommended is Yamipod. This is a free program that transfers music and playlists etc from iPod back to the computer. However, it does not transfer playcounts/ratings etc.
Another free program is Pod Player.
There is also CopyPod. This does preserve ratings/playcounts etc if those are important to you but this program is not free. It also supports video transfer.
If you are using iTunes version 7 or later, then you can transfer purchased iTunes store music from the iPod to an authorized computer by using the "file/transfer purchases from iPod" menu. Note that the maximum of 5 authorized computers applies here.

  • How do I delete songs from Itunes without losing them in my IPOD?

How do I delete songs from Itunes without losing them in my IPOD? I don't want 11gb of music stored on my computer when I already have it in my Ipod. Anyone have some info?

You can Transfer music manually, then delete the files from the PC without having it sync to the iPod.
    HOWEVER.....
Deleting songs off of iTunes or your computer is a very bad idea unless you have created one or more backup files of all your songs.
Using the iPod as the sole repository of any of your songs is a very risky practice. When (not ‘if’) you need to restore the iPod, return the iPod for service, or it's song files are somehow lost or damaged, you will be re-ripping all your CDs back into iTunes and re-purchasing all your iTMS songs. Restoring the iPod is a common ‘fix’ to many small issues that arise.
If you cannot store your songs on a PC or within iTunes, then you will need to have some storage medium in use (an external hard drive, DVDs or CDs). You should also consider a secondary backup medium for additional safety. Whether you keep your music in iTunes or on an external source – Multiple copies of your music files are a must!
The iPod is really designed to be playback device - not a primary storage device (although it can be used as such), and certainly not as the only storage medium for all your music.
Always backup your PC files: both music and data. Backup as frequently as possible. The usual ‘metric’ is to determine just how much work (hours, days, weeks) or money spent you are willing to repeat by extending out your time between backups. Your choice, your potential headache &/or loss.
Many data-savvy folks have more than one backup and create incremental backups every time they add to or change their Library. Depending on the work I am doing, I may perform several backups during the same day. As they are incremental, and placed on my Backup ExHD – it is a very quick operation to perform several times a day, when needed.
If you are heavily invested in your Library data (Playlists, Play Counts, Ratings, Last Played, Date Added, etc.), then:
it is critical that you also make multiple backups of your ‘iTunes Library.itl’ file.
iTMS REMINDER: While you can always take the time to re-rip the CDs you own to restore your iTunes music, if you lose your iTMS purchased music and have no backups, you will have to re-purchase them. Few exceptions are made to this rule – at least none that I am aware of.
Here is a post on developing a backup strategy:

  • When I try to transfer songs from itunes library to ipod touch it says sync in progress but songs are not on my ipod touch?

When I  transfer music from itunes library to my ipod touch, it says sync in progress on ipod touch, however, the songs don't show up on ipod touch. I have transferred songs in the past with no problem.  Not sure what is different now or what I'm doing wrong-I am very new at this and any help is greatly appreciated.

How is your iPod configured to sync music? In other words, what options and configurations do you have enabled from under your iPod's Summary and Music tabs in iTunes?
Maybe have a look at this article as well to verify your iPod is set up for syncing music.

  • I am no longer able to transfer songs from iTunes to iPhone 4

I have been unable to transfer music from iTunes to my iPhone 4 ever since I downloaded iOS 7.0.4.  I have restarted everything, checked settings, clicked on all song and then none at all.  I have backed up and synced at least 10 times.  I have no idea how to fix this problem.

It would go through the motions of syncing and show steps 1-5, then it would end. When I would check my phone the songs weren't there.
I ended up going back to my Summary tab, scrolling down to Options and choosing "Sync only checked songs and videos".  I clicked on Sync one more time and my songs showed up.  I guess that was the problem.

  • I can't transfer songs from iTunes to iPod

I had purchased several songs from iTunes and transferred them onto my iPod. One day, they just disappeared from my iPod, even though they're still in my Library. I've tried syncing my iPod manually and automatically, upgrading to new versions of iTunes, etc., but I can't get the songs back on my iPod. I've since imported a few more CDs into iTunes, and I can't transfer those to my iPod either, trying all the same methods. iTunes says that my iPod update is complete, but it's not. Any advice??

  • I cannot transfer songs from itunes to iphone

when i try to transfer songs from my itunes to iphone 4 they are greyed out and do not play.. and cannot see it in iphone

Go into itunes on the iPhone, select the purchased menu, then select "not on this iPhone".  If you then re-download anything that shows up and re-sync to itunes it should be all fixed.  This worked for me anyway.

  • Can't transfer songs from Itunes to Ipod

I'm trying to move songs from Itunes to my Ipod, and it's not moving them. Instead I'm getting an ! next to the songs. All of these songs used to be on my Ipod and I had to do a hard reset due to software corruption. Now it's not allowing me to add any of my old songs. I've updated both my Itunes and Ipod software. Any ideas?

I had the same problem, basically i had dragged and dropped the wrong folder into my itunes! This means the songs you've dragged in are essentially the titles but not the actual songs!!! I had to hunt all over to find the right one. Have a look at this link

  • How do i transfer songs from itunes to my ipod

I tried to transfer a song that i bought from the itunes library to my ipod but a message always pops up that says i am not authorized to play it on my computer. what does this mean and how do i put the song on my ipod?

You need to play at least a part of songs purchased from the iTMS to authorize them. They won't copy to your iPod until you do this.
How to transfer Purchased Music from iTunes to your iPod
    iTMS Song and Computer Authorization
If you've played & authorized them in iTunes and they still skip, try this. De-authorize the computer in iTunes/Advanced menu, then re-authorize it. You re-authorize it by playing one of the songs purchased from the iTunes Music Store within iTunes. It should ask you for your Apple ID and password, and then the computer will be authorized again. Sync your iPod with iTunes, and those songs should play on the iPod once again.
Another common cause of this is not having the latest version of iTunes.
If you are using the latest version of iTunes (6.0.2), then you need to make sure your iPod software is up to date also. Get the iPod Updater software, install it, run it and update your iPod.
When you have done this, authorize your music in iTunes by playing a few seconds of it within iTunes, re-sync your iPod, and it should transfer by whatever synching method you choose.
