1st or 2nd generation ipod nano

I loaded the latest version of iTunes (12) to my new laptop.  When I connect the ipod to the laptop, and open iTunes, I see the device and the music loaded.  But the only music I can move/edit is the music downloaded from iTunes.

If there are songs on the iPod that are NOT in your current iTunes library, then that must mean that the iPod is currently set up to automatically sync to a different iTunes library.  That would explain the greyed out songs on the iPod.
If your goal is to off-load the songs on the iPod, you cannot do that using iTunes (whether it is set to automatically sync or manual). iTunes only transfers song files in one direction, from the computer's iTunes library to the iPod (except for songs purchased from the iTunes Store).  However, there are third-party methods and utilities that can transfer from iPod to computer.  If you do an Internet search on something like "ipod transfer," you should get some links, including a CNET article on the topic.
Once the song files on the iPod are on your computer's drive, you can add them to your current iTunes library.  Then you can set up the iPod however you want, including erasing it and syncing it to your iTunes library.

So, your iPhone (and new shuffle) still work properly with iTunes, correct?
Your 1st gen shuffle... It's the white one with USB plug, that looks like a USB flash drive...?
Are you able to see it in Windows, and maybe change the drive letter back to E:?

  • 2nd generation Ipod nano not syncing?

My 2nd generation Ipod nano won't sync up with my Itunes library anymore after updating to Mountain Lion and the latest version of Itunes.  I plug it into the USB port on the laptop and the Ipod beeps and seems to be getting charged by the laptop but no sign of connectivity on Itunes.  I've also got an Ipod shuffle that I used just earlier today and it seemed to work fine with the same set up.  I'd like to switch back to using the Nano though and it seems to work fine other than Itunes not recognizing it now.  I know it's old but if it seems to work fine and i'd like to keep using it if I can sync it up.  Early 2011 15" Macbook Pro OSX 10.8.2.

I have unfortuantly had the exact same problem following my update to iTunes 11.
Incase someone explains the problem for me and not you, here is the link to my post. https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4755057
Best of luck getting it to work!

  • 2nd Generation iPod Nano Dead?

My 2nd generation iPod Nano was working fine this morning. Played music as it did for all these years. Later this afternoon I turned it on and the display would not light up. No music played. Seems like the battery is totally drained. Plugged into USB wall charger (from Apple) and get no indication whethr or not this thing is charging. Same when I plugged into my Mac. Does not show up in iTunes or on the desktop.
Is my iPod Nano Dead? Has the battery bitten the dust and cannot be recharged again? It's a shame that none of these iPods have user replaceable batteries... Other than being dead I am quite sure that if I could put in a new battery it would work again. I don't like spending a lot of money for something that does not last me at least 10 years.

If the iPod's battery has been fully drained it can at least 30 minutes or more of charging for the iPod to show any signs of life and even after that a hard reset might be required. To reset the Nano, press and hold both the Select?Center and Menu buttons together long enough for the Apple logo to appear.

  • Do they still sell the 2nd generation ipod nanos ?

I was just wondering whether or not they still sell the 2nd generation ipod nanos. i live in Canada and ive been wanting a red ipod nano for ages...and my silver one is now starting to skip. i might as well get a new one seeing as my silver one has been through alot of rough times...
If they are still selling them, do they have the red ones in Canada? If so, where can i get one?

They have refurbs on the online store, but not the red. You might try stores in your area that sell iPods, ebay, or if you are near an Apple Store check the Black Friday sale.

Take the iPod Nano to an Apple store or an AASP.  Whichever is more convenient for you.

  • My 2nd generation iPod Nano has locked me out

I own a 2nd generation iPod Nano. Yesterday, when I turned it on, I discovered that I was locked out of the controls, and the Hold button wasn't even activated. I think I've tried everything possible, both on this site and at home, to get the controls to unlock so I can use it again, but nothing has worked. Is my iPod officially broken, or does someone else know of a way to fix such a problem that isn't listed anywhere?

Have you tried resetting your iPod? Make sure the hold button is turned off, then hold down the menu + center button at the same time for at least 10 seconds. You should see an apple appear on the screen.
If that doesn't work, and your iPod is recognized by iTunes, I'd try and restore the iPod which is explained in this article:

I hope this helped! Good luck!

  • Can I take my 2nd generation iPod nano...

Can I take my 2nd generation ipod nano and put the music from my ipod into my computer?

Locate and download Yamipod and you can.

  • HT1353 Can you download radio to the old 2nd generation ipod nano? There is no category for downloads, only stuff bought from iTunes.

My 3rd generation ipod nano has blanked out on me. I have a 2nd generation ipod, was able to download my music from my iTunes library on it, but it would not download radio programmes from my download library. There is no category on the ipod for downloads, is this because it doesnt accept them?

It depends on what you mean by radio programs exactly.  Where were they originally downloaded from? Do they appear in the music category of your iTunes library?

Hello and Welcome to Apple Discussions.
You can still buy iPod Nano 1G accesories (Go to Apple Store > iPod Accessories > Previous Models > iPod Nano ). Of course the vast majority of accesories will work on both 1G and 2G Nanos. There is just half a millimetre difference in thickness of the Nano and the dock connector/ headphones are nearly in the same place it's only a few cases that won't work.
Yes you can buy cheaper products elsewhere. However, my experience of Apple gear over the last 15 years is that it lasts longer and performs better.

First, your iPod may need to fully charge which can take a couple hours. You may benefit from downloading the 2nd gen nano manual if you haven't already. If after allowing it to charge for a bit longer and still no life (try this with the iPod ejected from the computer to see if it will power on) then there may be another problem.
