1st series iMac G5: Booting problems, kernel panics, waking from sleep...

Specifications of the iMac described: 1.8 Ghz, 1GB, 80GB, 64 Mb Nvidia VRAM, Airport, 10.5.5
Back in August 2004 my dad bought us kids an iMac G5 for ‘family use’. It had a fresh install of 10.3.5 on it and compared to the (1999) iMac G3 it replaced it was amazingly fast.
The iMac never showed any signs of probable issues, until we decided to upgrade to Leopard in January 2008. Initially, this upgrade was only meant to be able to sync with the latest iPod nano (who demanded a newer version of iTunes).
After the installation the first thing I noticed was a high CPU usage, the machine seemed slower than ever and that with 1 Gb of RAM (the minimum sys. req. for Leopard are 512 Mb of RAM). Anyway, then the real thing started, it wouldn’t turn on anymore. We brought it to an Authorized Apple Reseller, the Tech department said the Logic board had failed. The costs of the fix weren’t the worth the computer anymore, so...end of story. The iMac was indeed one of the bad series, although it hadn’t any swollen capacitors.
My dad already made up his mind and bought himself a Macbook. He then told me that if I was able to get the broken iMac fixed, I could keep it. And so, I bought an ‘as-is’ logic board on Ebay. Last weekend I installed it, and it actually seemed to work! Yet, the problems are during the startup: the first thing I see is a screen full with horizontal lines flickering all the time, like an old TV with bad signal. Mostly it won’t boot and I get the message to restart the computer (kernel panic, I got dozens of logs already!). Sometimes it got stuck during booting (grey apple screen with gear in the middle) making the fans go crazy (after a while) and sounding what others describe as a ‘jetliner taking off’ sound. Sometimes the screen remains black. Generally it takes me 5 to 10 minutes to start up properly. Maybe it’s just me but it seems like when the computer has warmed up a little (by turning on and off on and on) starting up gets smoother. I mean the startup screen suffers from less horizontal flickering lines.
During the use of Leopard, I again get high CPU usage, especially when I use multiple programs at the same time, or when starting multiple programs. My iStat Pro said once that the fans were running at 4700 rpm and the heat of the CPU was about 70 Celsius. If I really want to **** my iMac off I should play a racing game. That just totally freaks him out! These problems could probably be solved by adding more RAM. Right?
The iMac also has a sleep problem. Sometimes after lets say an hour or so, you can’t get it out of sleep mode (by manipulating keyboard and/or mouse, the sleep light stops, but the screen stays off --> only solution is to restart). What happened to me once was that it slept so long that it just got into a deep sleep by turning itself off completely!
Here’s a list of what I tried so far:
- Disk Utility: Resetting the permissions, no problems were found.
- Resetting the SMU, both on the logic board itself as by pressing the power button 5 - 8 seconds, no improvements.
- Resetting the PRAM, no improvements.
- Did the Hardware test of the original install CD, nothing was found, all good.
- Did Archive and Instal, this actually messed my system entirely, cause it wouldn't boot at all and when starting up from the Leopard installation DVD it wouldn't recognize the Macintosh HD.
- Did Archive and Instal with the original disks, this disk did recognize Macintosh HD and so I installed the original system, 10.3. Booting problems and those flickering lines are still there though.
Next phase will be erase and install, but first I want to know what you guys think about all this.
Oh eh, One more thing; The guys at Applecare (phone support) told me that the replaced logic board was also out of warranty and so they couldn’t help me. But as the man on the phone was kind, he told me to go look for a special ‘driver’ on the net. He said that the driver should be able to resolve some of the issues described. He said that I had to give in the name of the LB on google and look for results. Is this bogus? Because I haven’t found anything useful on google so far. What’s the name (rather than a number) of the LB in the first place?
I hope you guys can give me some answers. I'm kinda desperate. But I still feel there's hope...

The symptoms of a flakey power supply are sleep problems and you have done all the right things as far as resetting the SMU and PRAM. Your CPU usage can be tracked by going to Utilities>Activity Monitor - look and see what is hogging the memory. The flickering lines could also be an optical system going south.
The other thing you can do is run DiskWarrior or TechToolPro to see if you have corrupted directories. Preferential Treatment will let you check for corrupted preferences.

  • Kernel Panic, Waking from sleep or transitioning to / from battery

I have a MBP 5.1 (Late 2008 Model) that I've been having a lot of trouble with lately, mostly with resuming from sleep. Over 50% of the time, if the laptop is asleep, when I wake it it will crash. Sometimes it will crash as soon as it resumes (before I'm prompted for username/password) other times it might crash right after I enter my username/password.
And, there are occasions that after I power down the laptop after a kernel panic, I get 3 more (or so) in a row when trying to reboot, then it usually boots.
I've run the AHT and it's found no errors. I don't have a lot of "stuff" installed and I'm not normally using any USB peripherals (I occasionally plug in my iPhone or a Serial/USB converter.
Otherwise, I've had no other problems, it all seems related to power in some way.
    What I've done so far:
    Reset the SMC
Reinstalled the OS (on a different/new drive just to be sure)
Other than that, I'm not sure what else to do with this guy. Any thoughts?
    Thanks in advance.

  • Kernel Panic Waking From Sleep

I've had the following kernel panic twice since installing Leopard on day one. I happens when waking my MacBook from sleep. Has anyone else seen this?
    Thanks,

Same here on an older iMac since Lion. Thanks for the uncheck wake for network access tip though, it doesn't do it either in that case, I will leave it that way.

  • IMac loses connection to network when waking from sleep

    Hi There,
We are a small mixed environment of Macs and PCs running on a Windows 2008 domain. One of 2 iMacs that now run Mountain Lion 10.8.5 is having problems when waking from sleep. One of our designers will go for lunch and the machine will sleep for about 30 to 40 minutes. Upon her return the iMac will kick her off of the 3 shares she usually logs into (2 are on Win2008 machines, and 1 is a MacPro running 10.6.8 Server).
If she has files open in any of the Creative Suite Apps, the app will crash and she will have to restart the whole machine. If no files are open then she can usually reconnect to the shares after a short while.  Obviously I told her not to leave any files open, but its causing her some headaches.
Its also creating srv errors (id 2012) on our domain controllers, when she tries to wake her machine.
This Imac is a late 2009, and we have a 2011 model that has no issues at all. Both are set exactly the same.
I have reset SMC, Pram, and rebinded to the domain, and searched through these forums quite a bit to no avail.
Any thoughts or suggestions would be much appreciated.

I am continuing to work on this issue, and have tried a number of things based on searching here and elsewhere.
And Lucky Me, I have been able to replicate this behavior on one of other Macs (imac 2011, on 10.8.5). I also see errors on 2 separate Windows file servers on the domain (Event ID: srv 2012).
Below I am posting what seems to be the relevant area of the log.

This is from the 2011 iMac, and I see something very similar to this on the 2009 machine.
I continue to think this is a software issue related to 10.8.5 and Adobe CS (CS5 on the 2009 machine and CS 5.5 on the 2011) as this appears to have come up only since the recent update.
    Any help would be appreciated.

  • IMac has empty blue screen on waking from sleep

My iMac goes to a blue empty screen when waking from sleep. No login. No desktop shows up. Any ideas or explanations? I am working on clearing off hard drive space - currently about 100GB available on 1TB system. But I do not know if that could be a cause.
Thanks for any help you can give.

As far as resetting the SMT, my only option was to hold the power button down and force the system off anyway, since I couldn't see anything.
I did reset the PRAM, which ended up being disastrous! Instead of encountering the problem each time the system went to sleep like what had been happening, after I reset the PRAM, it started doing it immediately during startup. I couldn't even get to the desktop. The computer was completely unusable!
If I hadn't had a spare monitor around, I wouldn't have been able to do anything with my computer! Interestingly, the problem doesn't occur with my old Apple Studio Display, just my new Apple Cinema Display.
You better revert to 10.5.4 and stay with it until this is resolved.

  • Suspected iMac factory RAM problem, kernel panics?

I've lurked on these forums for a while, and had a mostly problem-free experience with my Mac, but I believe I have some circumstances which warrant creating my own topic. Here's my system specs:
    iMac 21.5, mid 2011
    2.7Ghz Intel Core i5
    AMD 6770m 512mb
    12GB RAM (2 2GB Apple default DIMMS, and 2 4GB Crucial DIMMs.)
OS X 10.7.5 Lion (the product listing in my username was made before the .5 update.)
I have had my mid-2011 iMac for 17 months, and began experiencing random kernel panics about once a day, for the last week or so. At first I suspected it to be an issue with the sound card because most of these panics happened while I was in Skype calls. I ran AHT and everything came up clean: I checked Skype, iTunes and Software Update (no updates were found for any of them.)
Even though AHT passed my RAM, I read up on kernel panics again--and even though my computer had no signs of being slow at the time of the panics, I dreaded that that might be the issue. I ran Rember, a frontend for memtest, with all of my RAM installed, and the computer panicked during the block sequential test. No other programs were running at the time. I have been using the 8GB of Crucial RAM for nearly a year without issues, but I still removed the bottom pair of DIMMS, which turned out to be the Apple-installed RAM. (It is likely that my father switched the Apple sticks to the bottom while helping me install the upgrade.)
I ran Rember again and found that the Crucial RAM passed all tests; since no other programs were running at the time, it leads me to believe the factory DIMMs may be faulty. My plan is to use the computer with only Crucial RAM for a day and make sure no panics occur, then run memtest with only Apple RAM installed; if a panic occurs, then I will know they're faulty.
My iMac has AppleCare, but the nearest Apple Store is about 3 hours away (no AASPs here, rural area.) Is it possible to get in contact with Apple and have them shipme some new RAM, in exchange for the old? Can I contact the store and UPS or mail the computer in for service and have it shipped back? If the RAM turns out to be faulty, should I just replace it with more Crucial RAM?
In case someone can pinpoint the issue as something other than a RAM problem, here's my latest kernel panic log, which occurred during memtest. During all of these panics, I was multitasking (games, iTunes, Skype) but hardware temperatures were never beyond what they usually are under load (Processor below 50c, GPU below 70.) The "BSD process in active thread" has varied from kernel-task to cider, as well as Skype.

Thank you for reading. I apologize for the long post.

Had another kernel panic: this time during Skype, as usual. When the kernel panic occurs, the sound will skip and loop while the alert displays--and it always seems to happen when either me or my contact is speaking. I can be in call for several hours before this happens. The only major contributor to these panics I can see now is my headset.
I am using a Razer Carcharias headset (I know, Razer is starting to fail me), that has no drivers, and standard 3.5mm jacks. The mic doesn't work, as the iMac is only line-in, but that never bothered me because I prefer to use the built-in one. The headset is set as an output device both in Skype and in System Preferences -->Sound. I've gone several days without being on Skype, and still using the headset for iTunes and so on--no panics. But after a few hours of Skype, no matter what I'm doing as long as that's running: panic. Every time.
Some people on these forums have reported issues with panics when plugging in headphones or removing them, but I've never had that sort of problem. The log which I post below makes mention of a razerhid text that did not appear before I removed the mouse. I removed that kext by uninstalling another Razer driver before making this post, and testkext does not show any kext by that name running now.
But I can't figure out why a HID kext or driver would interfere with sound devices. It must be the headset somehow, which greatly disappoints me, as I've used the external speakers in calls for a year without issue.
Others have mentioned fears that these kinds of panics might be an issue with the logic board. I severely hope it's not a logic board issue: because of the wait times with Apple repair, I'd probably have to have my parents drive the machine in, drive back, wait a week, and repeat. This computer is quite literally my livelihood, but I can't ask them to drive two to three hours one way just for that. (Sadly, the only shops in a 50 mile radius that even mention Mac repair are those that have techs, in some cases uncertified, do repairs. Can't void my AppleCare like that.)
I am considering contacting Razer support and seeing if they have any advice on the issue. Here's my latest kernel panic log (ignore the razerhid kext, removed it already)

  • Kernel panics waking from deep sleep after SSD upgrade

    Hi
Kernel panics every time a 15-inch mid 2012 MacBook Pro 9,1* wakes from deep sleep** following upgrade from original HDD to an SSD***. The first SSD was replaced under warranty and the issue is still occuring. The extended Apple Hardware Test reports no issues. Following physical installation of the SSD, it was formatted—one Mac OS Extended (journaled) partition—and Yosemite (10.10.1) installed from a USB using the only-slightly-less-easy-way instructions from arstechnica. The original RAM was upgraded about a year ago with Crucial 2x8GB DDR3 1600 MHz RAM.
It is a very nice MBP if only these kernel panics could be resolved.
    Marilyn
*MBP spec factory configured with 1680-by-1050 high-resolution antiglare display
**It is not clear whether or not this deep sleep is standby mode or safe sleep. It is likely to be safe sleep because when waking from this deep sleep a progress indicator appears

  • Why my iMac does not change picture when waking from sleep ?

My iMac has Yosemite installed, I have tried to kill the system preferences in the library but it did not solve the problem.
I restarted, PRAM, repaired system permissions, log on off, etc. and nothing, nada !
It used to work without problems, changing the picture on my desktop every time the computer was waken up.
What it could be wrong ?
I have noticed that the CPU is now above 55% most of the time and iStat says that SGProtocol Service is constantly in 99%. I don´t have a clue what that means.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks in advance,
    Rod

    OK. I found the solution.
The computer changes the picture after sleep is activated from the power button but no from a hot corner, like it used to do. Obviously is a bug.
I ruled out the iStat, SG Protocol and high CPU, which are not related with the problem.
It is not a big deal, now I set it to change the image every hour, and it works !
    Thanks anyway.

  • MacBook Pro (Boot Camp) kernel panics, application crashes

I'm currently using a mid-2012 15-inch MacBook Pro with Windows 7 Home Premium installed via Boot Camp. Most of my daily activities before last week were playing games on Steam (for both Mac and Windows), editing videos in iMovie (Mac), and browsing the internet on Google Chrome (both). However, starting last Thursday, September 20th, at random intervals, my programs kept crashing without any sort of heads-up or computer slowdown leading into them. This was occurring on Mac with Safari, Steam and iMovie, and on Windows with the newly installed Borderlands 2, Steam, and Skype. Not to mention, Google Chrome's Shockwave was crashing every 15 minutes or less, and the "Oh Snap!" error page popped up without me doing anything on the pages that crashed (both on Mac and Windows).
To add to the problem, I was given my first blue screen after a string of application crashes last Thursday, and soon after upon switching to Mac, I received a kernel panic. From what my friends and I have researched, this has happened due to memory corruption, seeing as how the blue screen errors all had codes relating to that, like 0x0000003B and 0xc0000005. However, no matter what I've tried to fix this, be it cleaning the Windows Registry, using MemTest to see if the RAM caused this, running Disk Utility on Mac, running the Apple Hardware Test, or uninstalling/removing potential malware, nothing has seemed to work. Borderlands 2 keeps crashing at random intervals, Safari still quits while a YouTube video is still playing, and most annoyingly, I get kernel panics and blue screens while I'm talking to my friends on Skype.
Another interesting problem is that I can't install a Mac OS X 10.7.5 update; it tells me the downloaded file was corrupted every time I try download it and it can't install as a result. I'm stuck on Mac OS X 10.7.4. Yet I'm able to install Windows updates without any problem whatsoever. Why is this?
My question is, is it best to take this in for repair, or is there something else I can do to fix this that I haven't tried yet? I don't consider myself to be any good with the computers I use, so I have no idea if I should have seen/identified the error already.

  • Kernel Panic when waking from sleep mode., Kernel Panic when waking from sleep mode.

    Hi,
I have an Imac 2.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo desktop which I have upgraded to lion.
Recently I keep getting kernel panics when waking from sleep mode and I cannot figure out what it is.
I am not very computer savy - I.e. I use a computer but don't know programming etc.
The computer then asks me to shut down and restart.
Any help would be much appreciated as this is driving me crazy.

Hi, for other peoples information - I finally figured out the problem. It was actually a faulty RAM module which I had bought. I had upgraded from 2 to 4 gb of RAM using an approved type of RAM for my particular computer. Finally I removed one module of RAM (after doing nearly everything else under the sun including trying to reinstall the operating system and wipe the computer etc) and the computer worked fine.

  • Kernel Panics when waking from sleep? 2012 MBA Base Model

I've been having some trouble with my 2012 MacBook Air. It was running perfectly until about 2 weeks ago. Now, when waking from sleep, I am getting Kernel Panics that force the restart of my Mac. I was wondering if anyone could provide insight on the issue.
An example log file is below:

The problem stemmed from something related to USB. I suggest uninstalling the third-party software responsible for installing these items:
    org.virtualbox.kext.VBoxNetAdp          4.2.6
    org.virtualbox.kext.VBoxNetFlt          4.2.6
    org.virtualbox.kext.VBoxUSB          4.2.6

    com.silex.driver.sxuptp          1.10.1
    com.globaldelight.driver.BoomDevice          1.1
Alternatively you can boot into Safe Mode which will not load those device drivers, and see if you panics cease. If they do, then you can uninstall the software. BTW, the current version of Virtual Box is VirtualBox-4.2.12-84980-OSX.

  • Kernel panic when waking from sleep

My eMac (1Ghz, 256 Mb RAM, dual boot OS 9.2.2/OS X 10.2.8(upgraded from 10.2.4)) has a recurring but intermittent issue where it suffers from a kernel panic when waking from sleep.
In the past I managed to fix the issue by resetting PRAM and NVRAM, but this doesn't seem to work anymore.
Things I've found out until now:
    - Apple Hardware Test and Techtool Deluxe can't find anything wrong (all tests are passed).
    - No kernel panic log is written - apparently the kernel panic occurs before the log can be written.
    - Crash appears to be network-related. My IP address and network card address are shown at the bottom of the panic window.
    - After restarting, Finder windows revert to a state from two or three days ago...
    - Login items aren't the problem. I removed them all - this doesn't make any difference.
    - no weird things in the startup items folders, AFAIK.
I'm on the verge of reinstalling OS X, but I think I already did this a couple of years ago, and it didn't help.
    Please help.
    Thomas

Nominally, you'd download the OS X Update Combo 10.2.8 after reinstalling 10.2.4, then use Software Update to identify any additional security and other software updates. There was an issue with early builds of 10.2 failing the 10.2.8 udate if done directly, but working fine if one first updated to an intermediate version such as 10.2.6; I think that problem affected 10.2 through 10.2.3 and your 10.2.4 should be good to go directly to 10.2.8, but if there are any problems, you can go back to 10.2.4, then search the Apple Downloads link for 10.2.6, then 10.2.8
With 10.2.x, it's prudent to run Repair Permissions after each OS and security update before moving on to the next.

  • Kernel Panic resulting from force restart

My MBP has gone into Kernel Panic and I am not certain how to resolve. By resolve, I mean get back to my desktop/applications The Kernel Panic resulted from a force restart, held down the Power button because I was attempting do a regular shutdown but was not able to force quit some applications..they seemed to be hanging. Safari was one, iPhoto...also I had just synced a new iPad2. Maybe I didn't disconnect the iPad2 properly? I did have anything connected to the MBP...
I tried to startup in Safe Mode...but will not, just the kernel panic with instructions to hold down power button and restart...my MBP runs pretty well and I have never had a Kernel Panic since I bought it in August 2009
I do have most of the files backed up using TimeMachine on an external drive...
I have a my 15-inch MacBook Pro Mac Os X install DVD, that came with the Laptop...
There might have been another DVD that came with the box set/ I also have my Snow Leopard upgrade DVD. I believe I was running 10.6.5 but I keep up with the System Software updates and I was also getting prompted to update to the latest 10.6.7, so maybe I had 10.6.6.
So Kernel Panic is has never happened before, I didn't add anything, except for an iPad2 sync... but I believe that I got too impatient to shutdown when I couldn't force quit apps as quickly as I wanted too
I think the Apple Software updater was open, although I did not initiate an update, other apps included: Microsoft Word Safari, iPhoto, iTunes, Dreamweaver, Adobe Illustrator CS..maybe Photoshop..Yeah I think I had too many apps open when I tried to force restart. In practice I do not force restart...usually never. So to recap, I got impatient, force restarted with way too many apps, some big apps open, and set off a kernel panic on my MBP with no other devices attached.
I know part of the steps to recover involves booting from a DVD, but which one? The Mac OSX X Install DVD or the Snow Leopard Upgrade DVD? then...how to I get back to TimeMachine to do a restore if necessary?
    thanks in advance.
    Patrick

    Sadly,
After running and completing the hardware test which is passed..I then booted off the Snow Leopard DVD and ran the Disk Utility and to Repair the Disk and it said the Disk is not repairable..
    Invalid Node Structure
And told me to back up my files.
    So...I suppose the next steps:
Try to run DiskWarrior, to either fix the Invalid Node Structure or at least
retreive the files thru the HD preview.
Boot off the Snow Leopard DVD and reformat the drive and then, I should plug my external hard drive back in with the save Time Machine Data and I can click Restore and pretty much get back what I had when Time Machine made its last back up?
If Disk Warrior does not work. How can I try to get some files off the computer before I reformat the disk ... without using DiskWarrior? With or without DW I want to try a restore...
Is it a best practice to reformat the HD and then do a "Restore" off a bootable DVD? This would eliminate any previous issues and start off with a sound drive as opposed to trying to go right to a "restore" procedure.
    Thanks again!

  • Occasional Kernel Panics when Waking From Sleep

I bought my black MacBook a couple weeks after release and have had no problems so far. However, twice I had a kernel panic directly after waking from sleep. It happens so infrequently that it's a real curiosity to me when it does happen, since I've put the machine to sleep and woke it at least twice each day since I've owned it.
Yes I do have third-party ram, but it tests out fine with memtestx and Apple's own hardware diagnostics. I'd point the finger at it as well if it happened more than 2 out of probably 100 sleep/wake cycles.
    Here's the panic.log:

Since kernel panics may be caused by hardware, OS, and software you'll need to take a very systematic approach. But if your computer is panicking only when waking I'd look at hardware hardest. Do you have any peripherals connected? If so disconnect them. Also, be sure that once you've put the computer to sleep that you don't disconnect any firewire or USB devices. The Mac seems to really hate that. If you are connected to a USB hub the hub could be the issue. And unfortunately a Mac isn't the best test bed for memory checking so even if your memory is coming up okay from memtest it could still be marginal.
