1st time synch w/5th Generation video

I am the lucky recipient of a 5th generation video that was previously synched w/another computer. I am attempting to synch w/my imac and it is not recognizing it. I also have a 2nd generation that was used on the imac and when I plug the new 5th gen in, the ipod is giving me an error message of
"Fire Connections are not supported to transfer songs, connect the USB cable provided" Will the usb cable I have been using w/my 2nd gen - not work w/the newer 5th gen?

Transferring from where?
Biggest issue is file size. I only shot 2 min., but all email accounts say file is too large to send. Does this sound right?
How large is the file? This may be a limitation of your email provider.
If you're trying to take a video from your computer and add it to your iPod, you need to add it to iTunes first.

  • 5th generation video iPod USB not working

Hi, my 15 month old iPod 5th generation video no longer connects with USB on my iBook (all my other USB devices work just fine in the two USB 2 ports).
The screen lights when iPod is plugged in and when unplugged using USB, but that appears to be the in toto communication performed.
I have performed the five Rs, and putting the iPod into disc mode yields the expected result on the screen of the iPod (tick and OK to disconnect) but no connection to the computer (yes, I have plugged/unplugged a number of times).
I have disconnected the battery (as another poster suggested) for several minutes and that does not seem to have helped in resetting the system.
It charges just fine via Firewire (either by a Firewire port on my iBook or by an Apple Firewire AC adaptor type charger), with absolutely no charging taking place when connected with USB (either by a USB 2 port on my iBook (G4 2004 model) or by an Apple USB AC adaptor type charger).
I have also tried three different USB cables, one old, two brand new Apple ones (all of which work just fine on my old 4th gen iPod, my daughter's 3rd gen iPod and my partner's two 4th gen iPods).
When I run the inbuilt diagnostics on the iPod, all of them come back as ok, including USB, both as charging and communication, so, in theory, everything should be ok, but most patently isn't.
I have tried to use the iPod on a Windows 2000 computer and an older iMac (both of which otherwise work fine with other iPods either using USB and Firewire) with nil recognition by any.
I've looked in the wide dock connection plug at the bottom of the iPod as another poster said that the connection pins might be bent, however, I can't see any actual pins, just a wide tongue in the middle, the same as on my other older iPod. Or do I need to open up the iPod and look for something in there?
Judging by the nr of comments and questions on similar issues here with the 5th generation video iPod, there should be a definitive fix for this problem, although, after looking through as much of the forums that might relate to this problem, no one seems to have come up with an explanation, let alone a solution for it.
So, my question remains, my iPod 5th generation video no longer connects with USB on my iBook, has anyone else (taking into account the above information), either had/have this problem and or found a resolution to it?
    Cheers, Peter
iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   5th generation video iPod

Dear deggie, hi, thanks for the tip as to what I should be looking for in the slot. However, sadly, it all looks to be fine (well, at least the same as my other iPod).
HR, thanks for the tip re opening the iPod, unfortunately, it is 15 months old, so well past the 12 month warranty expiry (ridiculous, isn't it?).
Here in Australia, we don't have access to Genius Bars and Apple Stores, just the local distributors, and they want $210 to repair/replace the iPod, which, frankly I find a bit rich, considering that it hasn't been mistreated in any way and the other iPod I have has been running fine for more than two years.
I get the feeling, judging by the many complaints on these forums regarding the problems that the gen 5 iPod being recognised and connecting to both Mac and Windows, that this cannot just be purely user error or maltreatment. However, I'm unsure as to what can be done to resolve them or get Apple to admit to there being a problem.
One of the things that confuses me, is that all the internal diagnostics (menu + select then select + back) including USB communication, all come back fine, when, as mentioned in an above post, it most patently is not. Anyone have any clues as to what this might be due to?
If, by some bizarre fluke, I manage to find a resolution to this problem (short of going and paying Apple $210), I'll post back here with it.
Again, thanks for the help, cheers, Peter

  • IPod 60 Gig 5th Generation - Video Play List Doesn't Work

    Hi People,
I have a 60 Gig iPod Video that won't play my Video Playlists anymore. It acts like it wants to play but the next screen after I hit the play button looks like it is a song play list with the time bar with 0:00 at the left end and a -0:00 at the right end plus it has a 0 of 0 at the top left hand side.
This started when I upgraded iTunes to the new 7.02 version.
Any ideas on how to fix this?
I have already tried the 5 R's and no change.
    Thanks

I have the same issue on my brand new Nano 5th Generation. I still have my I-Pod Classic and it works fine with that. I would love to have a solution for this so I can use my Bluetooth headphones with my new Nano.

  • ITunes does not recognize 5th Generation video iPod in WinXp

PROBLEM: 5G iPod not recognized in iTunes (shows as removable hard drive in My Computer) via USB on HP Pavilion Notebook running WinXP. Latest error states insufficient power to run hi speed USB device on this computer. HP support replies that installed USB should comply to 480 Mbps hi speed standard. Trying to connect iPod via firewire results in "iPod can not be connected with firewire" error. Have tried the following steps before reaching this point:
Description of iPod: 5G, 30 gig video iPod model MA002LL contains 1.2 gig data (282 songs, 4 videos, 0 pictures)
Action: 5G iPod worked fine until connected to download purchased music 3 weeks ago.
Result: iPod screen shows "Do not disconnect" iTunes does not recognize iPod.
Action: Reset iPod (iPod works fine when not connected to any computer).
    Result: same as above
Action: Recharged iPod overnight with wall outlet to confirm full charge.
    Result: same as above
Action: Tried to run iPod Updater but iPod was not recognized by Updater (it does recognize iPod Mini and 4G)
    Result: same as above
Action: Reinstalled latest version of iTunes.
    Result: same as above
Action: Reinstalled COM interface for IPod Service several times.
    Result: same as above
Action: Ran repair maintenance on iTunes (repair successful).
    Result: same as above
Action: Uninstalled iTunes and iPod software, deleted their folders and bin files and cleaned out Temp directory, disabled virus protection and disconnected from network. Ran Windows Installer Cleanup Utility. (Uninstall successful)
    Result: same as above
Action: Restarted and reinstalled iTunes and iPod Updater
    Result: same as above
Action: Diasabled all non critical items in start menu
    Result: same as above
Action: Uninstalled all three USB controllers
    Result: same as above
    Action: Reinstalled USBs
    Result: same as above
Action: Tried to connect by firewire
Result: Error this device cannot be connected by IEEEE use USB cable.
Action: Talked to HP support to confirm USB standards on Pavilion Notebook.
Result: USB should read all 3 standard data speeds up to hi speed 480 MBps
Action: Tried 5G iPod on 2 other PC desktops with WinXP with powered USB 2.0 ports
Result: iPod shows "Do not disconnect" iTunes does not recognize iPod and both computers respond with the following error (which is not received on the notebook) "insufficient power to run hi speed USB device on this computer" both Desktops are older than the Notebook and have older versions of USB 2.0.
Action: Tried it on my iMac G4 thinking I could reformat it. Mac understandably does not read it as a drive. I tried the following three connections:
    1) Firewire connection: iPod screen shows: firewire connection is not supported; 2) Powered USB port connection: drive is not recognized by Mac and iPod screen shows do not disconnect; 3) Unpowered USB port connection returns an error of "USB Low power notice" on Mac monitor and iPod screen shows menu but won't connect to Mac.
    QUESTIONS:
Has the 5G iPod reached a point where it now pulls too much power to be read by USB? Is HP not giving me correct specs regarding the performance of the Notebook's USB? Why can I update my iPods with firewire on my Mac but not the PC? Any suggestions regarding what I should try next?
    Thanks.
HP Pavilion dv notebook Windows XP

Solution was found: HP was encountering a conflict with a trial version of Symantec Security Center and Norton Anti-Virus causing an incomplete install of iTunes.
The following actions resolved the problem. Uninstalled both Symantec applications, uninstalled QuickTime 6*, installed QuickTime 7.1.3 (iTunes would not install successfully prior to this step, seems redundant but worked), installed iTunes 7.1 (with Quicktime 7.1.3 again), connected iPod 5G which was finally recognized, received error that iPod was currupted, restored iPod and is now working fine.
I hope that this helps someone else with similar video iPod problems.

but i am wondering , how well does the ipod record notes ?
and anyone here in a band and tape their rehearsals ? was wondering how it sounds . thanks all !

after I watched them they dissappeared from my ipod,
Sounds like you have selected to only sync unwatched video content to your iPod.
This is a setting that you can change in your iTunes preferences.

  • Ipod 5th Generation Video Audio Problem

What could i do to fix this or at least just make the audio not so far off from the video? Thanks for the help

  • 5th Generation Video Ipod Case

I am going to buy a video ipod but I don't want to purchase it without having a case for it. I looked all around and it seems that every case recieved bad reviews or that the good cases have not been released yet. What case should I get?

It depends what kind of case you want and what iPod you're getting.
If you're going for the black iPod video, I'd try a skin case or one of the new Belkin Leather Flip Cases (not released yet, I don't think)
If you're getting a white iPod, I can THOROUGHLY recommend the Invisible Shield from http://www.theinvisibleshield.com/ It gives excellent protection from any scratching and allows you to display your iPod as intended. The Invisible Shield is not particularly noticeable on the white iPod, but shows up quite intrusively on the black iPod. It does have its bad points - it's difficult to fit, but once it's on, you won't regret it. You can also use it along with the slip case that comes with the new iPods. Trust me, get it!

  • Ipod 5th generation video and G2 Shuffle - how to manage both?

I have about 30 gigs of music on my itunes, and somebody gave me an old shuffle. I want to sync it with certain songs for my son but I want the big ipod to continue to do a complete sync. I nuked the existing music on the shuffle, made a playlist, and not seeing an option to sync with a specific set of tunes, I dragged the playlist and dropped in onto the shuffle's name. Now the music is there, but how do I get it to sync automatically if I update that playlist?
    What is Autofill?
Did I do this the best way or is there a better way?

You have to set it to sync playlists.
Go to the music tab and select what you want to sync.
You can look up the manual:

  • 5th generation video ipod won't turn OFF

Everything else seems to work fine but I can't turn mine off. I tried to reset it but it won't reset either. All of the buttons work fine otherwise...even the pause/select button works.....unless I want to turn it off. Any ideas?

Pause the ipod, then let it sit. it should "turn off". however the ipod NEVER turnes off just sleeps. it will go in to a deep sleep after a few hours. just let it sit. also download the newest updater. 2006-10-01 try that out

  • Help - My 5th Generation Ipod not recognised by ITunes but 1st Gen Ipod is!

Can anyone help? This is driving me mad!
I recently purchased a 5th Generation 80gb Ipod. Before installing to my PC I downloaded the latest 7.2 version of ITunes together with quicktime. However whenever I plug my new Ipod in, nothing happens other than the 'Found New Hardware Wizard' appearing in XP asking for the driver to be installed and the Ipod Charging/displaying that it is fully charged.
I have spent hours going through the apple site and following their suggestions on this and have done the following:
    Re-started the iPod service
Uninstalled and re-installed ITunes 7.2 (at least 5 times now!)
Deleted all my temporary folders and temp internet folders and cleared cookies, files, etc
Ran Windows Install Cleanup Utility to clean up any leftover installer files
Tried the Ipod in all of my USB 1 & 2 ports (My MESH PC is less than a year old)
I then contacted Apple Support who suggested I try my Ipod on another computer and if it didn't work to return it to them. So I duly installed iTunes (7.2) on my laptop at work and hey presto my Ipod was recognised and I was able to download a few tunes.
I glean from this that there can't be a fault with the Ipod itself??
Back at home I re- tried all of the things above and then after still no joy I connected my old 1st generation ipod to my pc and after some time ( at least 5 minutes) iTunes recognised the old ipod and syncronised. Using the same USB Port and the same cable I plugged in the new Ipod but still nothing happened other than being asked to install the driver once again!
Now all would be fine if I kept my music collection on my work laptop but unfortunately this is not possible and I could even get into serious trouble for having iTunes on there.
If anyone has any suggestions I would be really grateful as £200+ is a lot of money to pay for something that does not work!

The "driver" never was available from Apple. The driver files that Windows uses to communicate with an iPod are standard Windows OS drivers for a USB Mass Storage Device. If Windows cannot/does not recognize your iPod at all, not even at the driver level, it's likely an OS issue, unless the iPod fails to work on another computer as well. At that point you'd been dealing with a bad cable or bad iPod. Since another iPod works with the same cable, then it should be fine.
Try everything in this article that you haven't already tried:

    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
