1st used ipod with pc, now, want to switch to mac, help!

I first used my mini ipod with my windows desktop computer. I recently purchased an apple notebook and wish to use my ipod with it, and not with my PC. However, because my ipod is formatted for windows, I cannot use it for my mac.
I've been searching through the forums for help on how I can achieve this goal of switching to the mac, but with no luck. Is there any way that I can reformat my ipod to a mac? (easy explanations please!) Thanks!

The really easy way to do this is to plug your ipod into the new (mac) machine, and once you see your ipod show up on the desktop/ itunes dock, go look for the program called "ipod updater." This program will prompt you to reset your ipod and reformat it to mac, and you will follow the steps of setting up you ipod as when you first acquired it. The downside to this is that you will loose all the files on your ipod. There are two things you can do if you want to transfer the music onto your new machine. 1) Go get the CDs and upload them onto itunes on your new mac or 2) go consult google to find a third party program that will allow you to take the files off your ipod and put them onto your new mac. To my knowledge, apple doesn't provide a method of doing this so you have to download another program.
If you decide to recover your ipod, that is use a third party program to get the songs off of it, then wait until that process is complete and then use ipod updater to reset your pod to your new mac. With your ipod still plugged in, go into itunes, rename your ipod, and let itunes automatically update your ipod. After that you can set it to manual again (you may have to unplug it first). I do not reccomend using a third party program to maintain large music libraries on both computers, you should choose one that will be your home computer and stick with it.

  • Using iPod as a flash drive between PC and Mac help!

    Hey guys,
I have no idea how can I make my iPod a flash drive. Well, it was fine when my school used G4 iMacs last week. But now it's all HP pcs. And I cannot transfer my files to those computers anymore. When I plug my iPod via USB to one of them computer, it says that I will need to format the disk drive (iPod) because it cannot read the file system.
I guess it is because of my iPod is always connected to Macs (including mine) so that the file format on the iPod is unreadable to PCs. So I have no idea what to do because I am scared of that PC is going to ruin my iPod hard drive and its OS. I tried plugging it to a PC at my house, same thing happened. I am too scared to try.
Do you guys have any idea?
    Thank you in advance,
    Ton

Probably the easiest way to use an iPod on both Mac and Windows computers is to format the iPod (using iPod Updater) using the PC. This will force your iPod to use the Windows file system (FAT32) which both the Mac and PC can read from and write to without the help of additional software. Of course then all your software updates for the iPod will have to be done on Windows.
If you need to use a Mac (HFS+) formatted iPod on a Windows PC, you'll need to install some 3rd party software such as XPlay 2.0 (which you can get from MediaFour Software). This will enable your Windows PC to read a Mac-formatted iPod.

  • Hi all - any idea how to download songs from an old AOL iTunes account - have updated to Apple ID which is fine for new songs but didn't realise this wouldn't include the old songs.  Have a 1st gen ipod with the original purchases on if that helps

....... is there a way for me to get my old music library (which was controlled by my dad's apple ID) onto my new mac, but from that point on, start using my own apple ID for purchases?........
Yes, once the content is in iTunes on your computer, just click it to play and authorise your computer to play it by entering your Dad's ID and password.
Log into your own account and start purchasing your own content which will then be added to the existing content.

You can have them both on the same computer as I and many others have done for years.
Just go ahead and install FCS 3 normally.
There will be absolutely no problems.

  • Is there a way to use ipod with new computer without erasing entire library

I'm not really tech-savvy, but I'm tossing my old computer and getting a new one - is there a way to use my ipod on my new computer without erasing my existing library? It won't let me make changes to my ipod and wants me to erase everything that is on there right now - HELP!

Connect your iPod to your computer. When you get the message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod. When your iPod appears in iTunes enable it for disk use, this is required for most if not all the utilities listed below so they can access the files: Using your iPod as a storage drive
Once you are safely connected there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod. If you have any iTMS purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. A paragraph on it has been added to this article: Transfer iTunes Store purchases using iPod
The transfer of non iTMS content such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. Have a look at the web pages and documentation, this is just a small selection of what's available, they are generally quite straightforward. You can also read reviews of some of them here: Wired News - Rescue Your Stranded Tunes
    TuneJack Windows Only
    iPod2PC Windows Only
    iGadget Windows Only
    iDump Windows Only
    iRepo Windows Only
    iPodRip Mac & Windows
    YamiPod Mac and Windows Versions
    Music Rescue Mac & Windows
    iPodCopy Mac and Windows Versions
There is also a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs back to iTunes on Windows or a Mac. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available at this link: Two-way Street: Moving Music Off the iPod
Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync. I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay.

  • Using iPod with Vista

My brother's Mac has died and he was forced to buy a PC for the short term. He is working in Europe for 2 years and there is not a lot of support for Mac over there. He has installed iTunes onto the PC and want to connect their iPods to recharge. They receive a message about switching from Mac to PC. The question I have for him is "Will they lose all of their songs etc. when they connect to Vista now as opposed to Mac?"

    Hello, Welcome to Discussions.
If your friend just wants to charge the iPod but not Sync it he will be fine and will not loose any music unless he agrees to sync it with another machine and erase and sync. If this occurs he can only sync with this machine till he gets back home. At which time he will need to erase and Sync again to communicate with this machine.
If your friend has iTunes Store content on his iPod he can transfer these purchases to the Mac so he can sync back and fourth and charge the iPod as well. Please keep in mind if there is non itunes store purchased content it will not sync to the new computer.

  • Use Ipod with Front Row

Hey, I just got my new iMac core 2 duo and its awesome...I've been wondering if there is a way I can use Front Row with to access the music on my iPod. I have all my music on my ipod and don't want to sync it up with the computer(transfer all the files on to the iMacs HD) b/c it makes more sense to keep all my music on one storage device(iPod). I tried a few things like making an 'allias' of my ipod and putting it in the Itunes folder, and tried running a script I found on google but I can't do it. Thanks.

Well it looks like I'm getting a lot of views, but noone has replied yet....

  • Using iPod with high frequencies

Hi there - I'm having treatment for tinnitus (high-pitched sound in the ear). There is a treatment where you listen to music interlaced with high frequency sounds which is supposed to stimulate the brain & the cilia inside the ear. They have CDs available but recommend not to use iPod. My question is, if you transferred the CDs using Apple Lossless would the high frequencies come through? Bear in mind some of these frequencies are up to around 14 KHz and there are all sorts of subtleties in the signal. One question is transferring it to the PC using Apple Lossless, the other question is playing it back on the 5G iPod. I'm also thinking of getting a Nano just for this - would it play it back OK? Thanks!
    MacBook Pro 15", 60 GB 5G iPod   Mac OS X (10.4.4)
    14 iBook, 768 RAM, 60GB   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

This is only my personal opinion, which can be wrong.
First, human can only listen to 20KHz most, thats why the CD's frequency response only cover in the range of 20-20KHz.
For iPod - the apple mentioned the following
iPod is designed to provide the best-quality sound. iPod has a powerful 60 mW amplifier so it can deliver audio as loud as you want. It also has a 20 Hz to 20 kHz frequency response, which means you can hear distortion-free music at the lowest or highest pitches. Even the iPod headphones are designed to give you the best-quality sound. The earbud-style headphones rely on Neodymium transducers, a rare earth magnet that significantly enhances frequency response and overall sound quality. Most other headphones use aluminum, cobalt, or ceramic drivers; at the same size, the Neodymium driver is five times as powerful. Because the strength of the driver increases the accuracy of the sound, the iPod headphones provide a high-energy listening experience while minimizing distortion.
To ensure CD-quality sound, be sure to use a compression setting of 160 kbit/s (the default setting in iTunes) or higher when you "rip" tracks from your CD into MP3 format, or 128 kbit/s in MP4 format (AAC).
Therefore, if you rip the music from a CD, it does not matter whether it is MP3, AAC or Apple Lossless, it will no reduce the frequency response, however, there is noticeable difference of sound quality from different format, of course with Apple Lossless format being the best, but much bigger size.

You no longer need an install CD as the iPod software is now contianed in iTunes.
If the computer is not recognizing that your iPod is connected, try the suggestions in these articles.
Windows XP cannot detect an iPod.
USB drivers are not installed properly or are out of date.

  • Change apple-id, use ipod with new apple-id

    Hello,
my daugthers's "IPod touch" was the first apple device in the family. To be able to use it I created an Apple-ID with my personal data.
Now I bought an "IPad 2" at an Apple-Shop. The sales assisant helped me with the setup an we used the same Apple-ID as I already used with the IPod. But now i noticed that it was a mistake.
It would be better that my daughter's IPod uses it's own Apple-ID. Is it possible to change the ID for the IPod? What do I have to do?
    Thanks for your answers.

Absolutely nothing.  They will continue to function just fine.

Do I have to back up the IPod with ITunes an the "old" ID? Then change the ID on the IPod? ...? Or what ...?
No.  A single backup takes care of all apps.

In the event that a real disaster occurs and the backup is lost, the apps can be downloaded again at no charge.  However, you MUST use the same ID that was used for the original purchase.  Log out and back in again.
    pomatt wrote:
For buying apps she uses appstore-cards. There is still credit available. Any chance to transfer it to the new ID?
The credits stay with the ID.  They can not be transferred.
App updates can be done from either iTunes OR from the iPod and the next sync will transfer the update to the other device.  However, if you do it from iTunes, you must log out of one ID and into the other to for the updates of the "old" apps.  Then, when finished, log out/in again.  If you update from the iPod, you don't have to log out/in.  The iPod identifies the appropriate ID and, of course, asks for the password.
In case you're wondering, I ended up with two IDs by accident.

  • Used ipod with password

I bought a used ipod for my daughter with a password.  Was told just to "restore it" on itunes but itunes won't connect to it without the passcode. Now what?  I can't seem to contact the owner.   I checked out the other threads about this but no one seemed to say this wouldn't work for them! Thanks!
