1TB Time Capsule Constantly Spinning and won't back up

I have a 1TB Time Capusle and while the computer is sleeping, the time capusle is clicking away doing something and always VERY warm.
Also, the iMac it's connected to has a 1TB drive and I'm only using 82GB.  The backup drive is full for some reason and won't back up.  I gives me a warning and then takes me to the settings where it says it'll delete the oldest back up once full, but it's not doing that...
What's wrong here?  Is this TC corrupt?
How can I fix it?  I'm currently doing a Verify and Repair of the TC in Disk Utility.  I'll report back in a couple hours when it's done, but if anyone has any other suggestions, let me know...
Happy Holidays...

Time Machine will, eventually, fill all the empty space available to it.  If you've had it for quite a while, it may be normal.
But there are some things that will cause extra-large backups.  See #D4 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting for some common culprits and ways to figure out just what's going on.

There's different handling, and different warnings, depending on what version of OSX you're on.  See #C4 in the same link.

My Time Capsule shut down last night--completely turned off--and won't turn back on. It felt warm, so I unplugged it overnight. I tried plugging it back in this morning and it still doesn't have power. I've also tried plugging it in somewhere else, and the hard reset as described on the Apple Support Website. But still no power. The green/amber light doesn't come on at all. Suggestions?

the power supply is cooked in its own internal oven bag..
It sounds like it is beyond warranty but if you have applecare on a Mac that will also cover the TC if it was purchased within 2years of the computer..
Otherwise a self - repair is possible or help from a repairer if you happen to live in an area.. to Apple it is a sealed unit and they will not help you.

  • My MacBook Pro is currently online via wifi, but the airport utility doesn't recognize the airport time capsule base station and has not backed up in 10 days

My early 2011 MacBook Pro 15 inch is currently online, with good (albeit slow... although that is due to the service provider) internet connectivity via wifi.  The icon shows that I am connected to my network with full bars.  I use an Airport Time Capsule as my wireless router, purchased late last year, and it has worked well until now.  Internet comes via cable modem (provided by the cable company), and can be patchy and quirky, so I am often rebooting the modem, but the airport wifi router typically does not need to be rebooted with the modem to regain connectivity.
My problem is that my time capsule has not backed up in more than 10 days.  When I went to investigate this, it claims it cannot find the time capsule.  when I open the airport utility on the laptop it claims there is no airport connected (although there is the green light next to the internet icon).  I checked on this using the airport utility app on my iPad, and it has no problem identifying the router as an airport time capsule.  I did update the firmware on the router using the app on the iPad, but it made no difference to the laptop.
First question: Do you think this is a problem with the Airport router or my MacBook?
Second Question: what can I do about it?
My MacBook feels like it is on its last legs anyway, so I am currently looking at replacements, but I really want to make sure it is backed up in case it dies before the new one arrives!!  On the other hand, we have serious power issues here, and while the router is on a UPS, the UPS battery is basically fried and conks out in about 5 minutes, so the Airport is constantly being cycled on and off, which I worry could also be causing problems with the proper operation of the device (although the fact that it works with the iPad makes me think that is not the case... but I don't really know).
    Thanks!

All Mac Pro's ever made have shipped with gigabit ethernet.  The last non-gigabit tower desktop Apple made was the very first generation PowerMac G4's back in 1999.
Similarly, all Time Capsules have been gigabit ethernet as well - never been one that was not.

I have a NETGEAR DM111PSP ADSL+2 router and a 1TB Time Capsule.  I continue to get a Double NAT status in the airport utility.  how do I need to configure the TC?  Tnx, Q

The TC needs to be configured in Bridge Mode since you already have another router "upstream" on the network.
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
Click on the the TC icon, then click Edit
Click the Network tab at the top of the page
Insure that Router Mode is set to "Off (Bridge Mode)"
    Update to save the settings

i have 1TB time capsule and i need to back up more media. Can i also use a 3TB time capsule asswell?

You can, but it is not possible to continue backups "seamlessly" from one Time Capsule to the other.
Time Machine will make a new complete backup of each Mac on the first pass when you connect the new 3TB Time Capsule.

  • Can I use 2 time capsules at once? 1 for back up and other as a hard drive?

I have a 1tb time capsule that I use for back up of my macbook pro. Everything works great. However, like most people, I have problems with my hard disc space and have to store my itunes and photos externally on a portable usb hard drive. This works fine for now. I keep it plugged in most of the time so that time machine can back it up when it is physically attached buy the usb cable. Obviously, when it isn't, it misses out being backed up.
My question is this. Would it be a bad idea to run two time capsules at the same time? I would like to keep my current time capsule as the back up and the new one purely as an external hard drive for storage. Would the old time capsule back up both the new time capsule and my macbook? The reason for my question is that my current portable is too small now and I currently move my laptop around so I am forever unplugging this usb drive which becomes a real pain and also, interupts it being backed up, etc.
I am looking for a wireless solution so that the external drive gets backed up along with my laptop no matter what. I used to have the usb portable drive plugged into the back of my time capsule but it wouldn't appear in the list in time machine preferences to be included. I am aware that I can buy wireless hard drives but would like to find out about an extra time capsule first.
Hopefully this is a simple question for someone. Any help gratefully appreciated, thanks.

You don't need another Time Capsule. Just buy a USB HDD and plug it into the TC USB port for additional storage.
Would the old time capsule back up both the new time capsule and my macbook?
No. Time Machine can back up TO a NAS (e.g TC), but cannot backup FROM a NAS (e.g. TC). An app such as CarbonCopyCloner (donateware) or SuperDuper! (purchase) may be able to, however.

  • Sharing a 74 GB Iphoto11 file with 3 MACs in the house+an 1TB Time Capsule

Hi. I run the Iphoto 11 and my 74 GB file from my MacBook Pro. But when I am in the office my wife and child cannot work neither import fotos to Iphoto. We have an IMac and a Macbook Air as well. I would like to place the Iphoto file on the our 1TB Time Capsule which we use as a network storage drive (is not used for backup). Please give me a god advice how to solve the issue

This is a pretty easy setup.
Basically just plug the new TC WAN port into the old TC LAN port.
Run the airport utility on the computer and it should recognise that the new TC is plugged into another one.. and setup bridge mode and create a wireless network.. if not you can jump in and edit it at the end of the setup.
You could also swap things around with the new TC as the main router.. and the old one as the secondary.. but people are experiencing some issues with WAN connection to some cable modems.. so you need to be prepared if you have issues to go back to the original setup.
You will use an ethernet patch cable to connect them. I recommend if you have them in the same area place them at least a couple of meters apart.. so buy a 2-3M patch cable at least.. (8-9ft). Even better would be to install the new TC closer to the clients that will use it.. to improve wireless in dark corners of your house.. but all that can come later.
My 2nd question is: Can I move several 100 GB of old data that I rarely use onto the 3TB TC so that I could access the data from either computer whenever I need it, without having the data on either computer?
This is a lot harder question.. not in how to do it.. it is simple.. copy and paste files onto the new TC.. that is not the issue..
The problem is backup of the files that no longer exist on the computers. Ironically the TC is problematic for one major reason.. it cannot back itself up.. nor can Time Machine (TM) backup network drives. Even though TM uses the TC to store the backup it cannot actually work to backup the TC. The problems are not insurmountable.. you can use a third party backup.. eg CCC but it will be extremely slow. A better strategy if one of your computers is a desktop is to install an external drive and share it to the network. The data rate will be hugely better.. and TM can backup as per normal.

  • 1TB Time Capsule taking days for backup of 2GB

So, I know this may be an absolutely idiotic question, but I'll ask it anyway. I have a 1TB Time Capsule that is less than a year old. I've been able to perform initial backups of large amounts in the past pretty decently, but a few months ago, I quit backing up to it, but left all of the data there. I recently found out that the hard drive on my first Macbook Pro (also less than a year old) is dying, and I'm trying to put all of the essentials on the Time Capsule so the backup will be there. The essentials total to about 2.4 GB, and I have waited two days, not doing anything on or to the computer and it has gotten to only 14 MB, not to mention it took hours to just "Prepare". I have the latest firmware and all of the most recent (as of 4 July 2009) updates. This seems a bit off to me, and I'm just trying to figure out if there's anything wrong, so I can send it in before my warranty expires on the 29th. I've already gotten the short end of the stick as the warranty for my laptop was expired less than one week ago, meaning I'm going to have to pay for installation and a new hard drive, and I don't want to get short ended like that again. Do ya'll think there could be an actual problem here, or could it just be something on my end? If so, what could it be? Thanks in advance for any help ya'll can give.

    Two things to try.
First off... before you try and backup from the MacBook Pro to the TC, delete the original backup from the TC.
Secondly, the problem might be due to the fact that since the MacBook Pro hard drive is failing, the system is taking a long time in retrying to read data blocks off the disk. One way to check this would be to use Carbon Copy cloner or similar to take a backup image of the MacBook Pro hard drive onto the TC.

  • Backing up a 1TB Time Capsule with a 2TB Time Capsule

    I have a 1TB Time Capsule and a 2TB Time Capsule.
Can I use the 1TB TC as a network disk (to store my iTunes files and my iPhoto file) and have it automatically backed up on the 2TB TC through Time Machine?

No you cannot do that.. TM cannot backup a network drive.
You can do it using a 3rd party backup software.. CCC, superduper.. anything really just not TM.

  • Since I updated to my new 1TB Time Capsule, my HP printer can't find my network

I have an HP Officejet Pro 8600. I had no trouble connecting it to my network on my old Time Capsule. Since updating to my new 1TB Time Capsule, my printer can't find my network.
Any ideas on what's the problem here??  Sure would like to be able to print off my iPad like I used to be able to do...
    Thanks in advance...cheryl

I am a bit confused.. the new TC is 2TB or 3TB disk .. there is no 1TB model sold..
If your printer is setup by wireless you will need to redo the setup from scratch.
I am not sure how you are running it.. but if you are using airprint from ipad then it has to be wireless. Then I strongly recommend you redo the setup of the TC to have short wireless name.. eg TCwifi and then setup the printer via WPS in the airport utility.

That is very bad.. how old is it??
The Gen4 TC can die this way.. it is not usual but it happens.
Leave it for several hours to cool off. Do a factory reset immediately when you try to restart it.
    The Factory Reset.
    Power down the TC.
Hold in reset. and keep holding it in. Be Gentle! It is a tiny surface mount switch with a plastic lever.. Attempting to push it out the other side of the TC will not make the switch turn on better.
(I fix TC and have several reset levers bent over and jammed or broken off).
Power on the TC.. remember with the reset held in.. this needs three arms.. a friend or power switch you can get to with your feet..
Keep holding in reset for about 10sec until the front LED flashes rapidly.
Release reset and wait .. the boot will be slow as it deletes previous setting.. only from router side and pulls out the factory defaults. No files are deleted on the hard disk.. but the name of the TC may change.
Tell me exactly what the LEDs do throughout this process.
Both the main one at the front and the LED on the ethernet ports which should all flash during bootup.
If it is less than a year.. of course Apple will replace under warranty.. 2 years in some places.. Europe .. places with stronger consumer laws. If you have applecare on a computer it should still cover the TC.
I kind of doubt you are going to get this going again... but we can try.

  • How to setup apple time capsule with FIOSinternet and VZ router?)

    Hello,
I have Apple time capsule and the VZ Router MI424WR. I current set up:
    1. VZ router - wireless off, the rest is standard
    2. Time capsule: Wireless on in Bridge mode
Result: Internet works but the wireless network is very in-stable. Airtunes is nearly not usable.
I searched in the Internet and there was several comments that is is not a good combination. Therefore it is recommended to convert the VZ router in a modem mode and use only the Time capsule as the router. I tried this several times I do not get it to work. I followed this procedure (http://data.agaric.com/node/2160) but then I need the PPPoE Account number and password. But there do I get this? The Verizon support was not really helpful.
Please, is there a good and complete description to solve that issue?
    Thanks in advance
    Moebius

Go back to your first setup ...
Verizon router with wireless turned off
Apple Time Casule with wireless turned on
    Method 1:
With the Time Capsule in "Bridge Mode", if I remember correctly, you should connect the WAN port to one of the open ports on the Verizon router (I believe bridge mode also turns off the DHCP server on the Time Capsule, if not, find that and turn if off as well).   Change the addressing mode for the Time Capsule to "static" and assign it an address on the LAN which is not in use (choose something you know is out of the way but on the LAN -- I suggest 192.168.1.180 to start -- you can change it once you get everything working).
If it doesn't work this way for you, move the cable from the WAN port on the Time Capsule to Port 1 and try again.
    Method 2:
This results in a router behind a router setup, but unless you have devices connected directly to the Verizon router, it shouldn't be a problem.
With the Time Capsule disconnected from the Verizon router, turn on "Connection Sharing" (not bridge mode) and make sure DHCP is enabled on the Time Capsule.  You need to change the address range being used by the Time Capsule (which I think defaults to 192.168.1.x to another network -- I suggest, 192.168.2.x with a netmask of 255.255.255.0 and give the router an address of 192.168.2.1 on the LAN side.  Now, connection the WAN port to one of the Verizon router LAN ports.  If you had anything connected to the Verizon LAN ports, move those over to the LAN ports on the Time Capsule and reboot them.
    Method 3:
This is the least desirable of the scenarios because it relies on Verizon's crappy radio in their router (the Time Capsule has a much better radio and support 802.11n as well as b and g) whereas Verizon's only support b/g.    Go back to the configuration for Method 1, but also turn OFF wireless on the Time Capsule and turn on wireless on the Verizon router.   Try both bridge scenarios described -- using the WAN port first and if that didn't work, then moving the connection to port 1.
There is no scenario where you can place the Verizon router behind the Time Capsule -- since I believe Verizon is using all MoCA connections for the WAN side of their connection (you'd have to get Verizon to convert you to ethernet WAN and then they would not support you most likely for any STB issues with your FiOS if the Time Capsule was between the ONT and their router ... so don't even bother wasting time there ... more headaches than it would be worth.
If you're still not sure exactly what each configuration screen on the time capsule should say, post some screen snaps (or the configuration settings/choices which you are unsure about and someone will likely know the answer here).

Can I use two Time Capsules? one as an extension of my laptop (for music and video storage) and the other one to back up everything from the laptop and  Time Capsule (for music and videos)

Not via Time Machine.   It cannot back up from a network location.
The 3rd-party apps CarbonCopyCloner and ChronoSync may be workable alternatives.
EDIT:  And, if you're going to do that, you could back up from the Time Capsule to a USB drive connected to the TC's USB port.  Second TC not required.
