1TB Toshiba External HD Clicking

Purchased my black 1TB Toshiba Canvio External Hard Drive in July, and a few days ago I heard/felt a continuous clicking. I have been more than cautious with my drive, never dropping it, never tilting it, and never unplugging it when the led was flashing. Any way I could possibly revive it? Sometimes after I unplug it, and plug it in again, there is no clicking for an hour, and my files are readable, but then it starts back up with the clicking again

Hi
You should be troubled if the HDD starts to make some strange sounds.
It could be a first sign of a HDD crash.
At the other hand my HDD clicks also but not always this happens sporadically
I could not find a reason for that but I have created some backups in order to be on the safe side.
I think you should backup the data too.

  • My 1TB Toshiba External Hardrive no longer works on my MacBook Air

I got a 1TB Toshiba External Hardrive and had no problems with it and added some pictures and everything to it however no it no longer works, or even shows up in the devices when i plug it in. I Saw that some others had the same problem and can't even find where they suggested to go to try and change it to read and right.

Not that I can tell. Suspiciously, we did run a salvo of updates from Software Update and the problems started immediately after, but none of those appeared to be directly related to Airport functionality (firmware or otherwise). Just to be sure, I took the "safe" steps of repairing permissions, re-downloading the last combo update & re-applying it. I also searched for any firmware updates related to Airport. What's odd to me is that the firmware reported on her machine is different than that on mine. They're both Late 2006 Macbook models, so that strikes me as odd (but maybe it isn't). I wasn't able to find any updates that her Macbook was lacking, however.
My (working) firmware is: [type] AirPort Extreme (0x168C, 0x87), [version] 1.4.8.0
Her (not-working) firmware is: [type] AirPort Extreme (0x168C, 0x87), [version] 1.4.4
Based on the card type, it doesn't appear that they're different chipsets, so I'm not at all clear on why the firmware versions differ. Was there a firmware update for Leopard that wasn't available/needed for Tiger?
Also, I know for sure that there were no firmware updates performed during the last set of updates ... that's a more involved process, if I recall, not handled through the standard updater, I think.
    Thanks for the response!

Since I upgraded to 10.9.5, my macbook no longer recognizes my external  hard drive. How do I fix this?  External hard drive is a 1TB Toshiba formatted for mac.  Worked fine until latest upgrade.

Solved the problem by dumping my external HD onto another computer. Re-formatting and re-installing the data.  Not what I wanted to do but it solved the problem.

  • 1TB Toshiba Iomega external is restarting itself during boot-up phase.

I have a 21inch iMac with a 1TB Toshiba iomega HDD for time machine and backup for other files. It's been working great for a while, but usually when i boot up now while its connected it restarts itself and keeps doing it until the imac is fully loaded or until i unplug it. it still works fine, im just worried if it gets worse i could lose it, any way i could fix it??

So i've been researching my problems since nobody here seems to be able to answer my question.
It may be the GPU.  It seems like ever since I've opened my macbook pro, I've opened a pandoras box of ******* slicing razors.
I'm thinking the logic board is ******.
So now I'm guessing I'm going to have to pay a **** load to fix my computer.  ****!

  • Toshiba external HDD not recognized by MacBook Air

I have a 1TB Toshiba USB3.0 external hard drive that I have been using for the last year or so to back up all my work data.
The drive works perfectly when I connect it to a PC (Dell desktop, laptop, HP laptop, etc.).  I even was using it last night on a PC.
However, my work recently replaced my PC with a MacBook Air, and the system will not recognize the drive.  USB port will power the drive (light comes on solid blue), but System Profile, Disk Utilities, and Finder do not recognize as attached.  Once again, I used last night without issue on a windows PC.
    Any help would be appreciated.

  • What to do? coudn't open my toshiba external hard drive that I can open before

I have a Toshiba external hard drive that I've been using without any problems before I upgraded my OS to Mavericks...Now I couldn't find the drive anymore but it seems that my mac detects it but it just is not opening it anymore...couldn't find it in my finder window....Anyone who knows how to fix this? Thanks.

Have you reset power on both the Mac and hard drive?
From time to time, during sleep/wake cycles, my network attached drive wouldn't show up in my Fiinder. When I would click to Connection, they would come up grayed out. Cycling power on the Mac didn't really help much. But cycling power on the hard drive unit did.

  • How to set up a Toshiba external hard drive on my Macbook Pro?

    Hi there,
I just bought a Toshiba external hard drive that says on the package it is compatible with Macs. I plugged it in, installed the Pogoplug PC for Mac (no idea what this is) and Tuxera NTFS for Mac (it was in the "Mac Driver" folder). Now what? Is my data now automatically going onto the hard drive? Do I need to install anything else? This seems too easy! What am I missing here?
    Thanks!

New hard drives out of box should be formatted for your Mac
go to DISK UTILITY and verify what it says your HD is formatted as under the "ERASE" tab
HFS+ above is the "mac format"
Format (erase) it in "mac osx Extended journaled"
AFTER THIS YOU CAN DRAG AND DROP FILES AS YOU LIKE
    To show HD on desktop
go into FINDER at top then PREFERENCES  then GENERAL tab
then check "hard disks" and "external disks"
There is no such thing as a MAC or PC hard drive,.....they can all be formatted as you wish for either PC or Mac (or both)
    FORMAT TYPES
    FAT32 (File Allocation Table)
Read/Write FAT32 from both native Windows and native Mac OS X.
    Maximum file size: 4GB.
    Maximum volume size: 2TB
You can use this format if you share the drive between Mac OS X and Windows computers and have no files larger than 4GB.
    NTFS (Windows NT File System)
    Read/Write NTFS from native Windows.
Read only NTFS from native Mac OS X
To Read/Write/Format NTFS from Mac OS X, here are some alternatives:
For Mac OS X 10.4 or later (32 or 64-bit), install Paragon (approx $20) (Best Choice for Lion)
Native NTFS support can be enabled in Snow Leopard and Lion, but is not advisable, due to instability.
AirPort Extreme (802.11n) and Time Capsule do not support NTFS
    Maximum file size: 16 TB
    Maximum volume size: 256TB
You can use this format if you routinely share a drive with multiple Windows systems.
HFS+ ((((MAC FORMAT)))) (Hierarchical File System, a.k.a. Mac OS Extended (Journaled) Don't use case-sensitive)
    Read/Write HFS+ from native Mac OS X
Required for Time Machine or Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper! backups of Mac internal hard drive.
To Read HFS+ (but not Write) from Windows, Install HFSExplorer
    Maximum file size: 8EiB
    Maximum volume size: 8EiB
You can use this format if you only use the drive with Mac OS X, or use it for backups of your Mac OS X internal drive, or if you only share it with one Windows PC (with MacDrive installed on the PC)
    EXFAT (FAT64)
Supported in Mac OS X only in 10.6.5 or later.
Not all Windows versions support exFAT.
    exFAT (Extended File Allocation Table)
AirPort Extreme (802.11n) and Time Capsule do not support exFAT
    Maximum file size: 16 EiB
    Maximum volume size: 64 ZiB
You can use this format if it is supported by all computers with which you intend to share the drive.  See "disadvantages" for details.

  • How do I get my MacBook Pro to recognize my Toshiba external hard drive?

How do I get my MacBook Pro to recognize my Toshiba external hard drive? I'm working on transferring my music from our home computer to my new laptop and I already got all my music onto the hard drive but now, when I plug it into my MacBook Pro, it doesn't recognize it. There isn't an icon that pops up and nothing happens at all. The blue light on the hard drive that indicates that it knows it is plugged into something comes up but that's about it. Someone told me I might have to "format" it but I don't know what that means and I don't know how to do it. I just want to get my music from the hard drive to my laptop so please help!

I don't know about your first question... I went to finder, preferences, then general but I didn't see anything for the hard drive.
Huh, in the Finder menu, Preferences, you will see this:
Nope, disk utility cannot see it. I've tried unplugging it and plugging it back in but it still won't recognize it.puter that's a Mac...
If DU cannot see it then the preferences is just an academic exercise.
If this is a USB drive then as mentioned above you may need a powered USB hub since there may not be enough power from the USB to run the drive.  What else do you have plugged into the USB ports?  If there's some stuff you can unplug it then do it and see if your drive mounts.
What do you mean from a Windows machine? It's a Toshiba hard drive and I put my music on it from my home computer that's a Mac...
Which is all I wanted to know, i.e., whether the drive came from a Winows machine.  So it's been formatted and created on a mac.  Therefore it should mount on this other mac machine.  So it most likely is a power problem.

  • How can I interchange a Toshiba external drive with my Mac and Windows? It only works read only with the Mac.

I bought a Toshiba external drive IT and I can copy files to it from my Macbook Pro 5,3. I would like to know how canI interchange files with Windows and the Mac.

If the disk is read only, it is formatted for Windows and the Mac can't write to it
    Reformat to FAT32
This will of course wipe all data so move it first

  • My Toshiba external hard drive is no longer being recognised by my Macbook Air - solution?

My Toshiba external hard drive is no longer being recognised by my Macbook Air. The light on the hard drive is on, but it won't appear on my computer's desktop or anywhere else. How can I fix this?

    Hi rivraff,
If you are having issues mounting an external hard drive volume, you may want to see if it shows up and/or can be repaired in Disk Utility; you may find the following article helpful:

  • HT1338 I bought my macbook pro november 2011 and I still cannot use my toshiba external hard drive.  what updates do i need to get?

I don't know my operating system.  I bought it in nov of 2011.  I am trying to axcess a toshiba external hard drive.  what new update do I need to get?

You can find out your current system version by select About This Mac from the Apple menu.  To make sure it is updated, select Software Update from the Apple menu.  A Mac from Nov. 2011 is probably running "Lion," and the latest version of Lion is Mac OS X 10.7.4.
But that should not affect the connection of an external hard drive.  There are no special updates for connecting standard external drives.
Does the external Toshiba drive connect by USB port?  Is it the smaller type that gets power from the port (no conection except for the one cable), or is it larger (with its own power supply)?

verify on another Mac if the same
WD is having issues with mavericks as you can see on the WD forum, did you install any WD software (never do that) when you connected the drive for the first time?
possible issue is a dead SATA bridge card or the new WD firmware w/ Mavericks.

Your dead external hard drive is likely fine! Great hope for your 'faulty' external HD

  • Disk Utility Partition Issue- 1Tb Seagate External

    Hi All-
I recently received a 1Tb Seagate external hard drive connecting via a Firewire 400 cable. Problem is, it won't let me reformat the thing as a single, continuous partition map. 2 is a problem as well: it only lets me format it if one side of the partition is MS-DOS and the other is OSX Journaled. if both as OSX, then Disk Utility once again fails to partition the drive. Is there some lurking cap on hard drive capacity that the MBP can understand?
    Thanks.

I bought recently the Seagate FreeAgent Desk 500 Gb drive (the USB only Windows preformatted model since this one was 150$ cheaper than the made-for-Mac model with FW ports). I had the same problem as you ("one side of the partition is MS-DOS and the other is OSX Journaled"). My friend on an iBook G3 PPC running Panther bought the same model and didn't experience such problems (and was able to upgrade easily from 10.3.9 to 10.4.11 after her initial system backup).
However, I was able to reformat my Seagate drive with Disk Utility and use Time Machine afterwards to backup my entire MacBook Pro but since Disk Utility was showing MS-DOS (FAT) as a volume format for the main external drive, I was worried about future backup problems.
Then I read this recent news on MacFixIt ( http://www.macfixit.com/article.php?story=20090111225651243 ) about this particular issue since the 10.5.6 update and possibly 10.5.5. I followed the instructions (as explained originally in this thread ( http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=8700407& ) and reformatted my USB external drive and everything went smoothly and as it should be. The GUID option did it for me.
Hope it does it for you.

  • MAXTOR ONE TOUCH III 1TB 1000GB EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE on MacBookPr0?

Need more Ext HD storage for iTunes on my MBPro Is anyone using a MAXTOR ONE TOUCH III 1TB 1000GB EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE this drive on MacBookPro, is it any good? Advise

The Maxtor one-touch models, comes with a EMC Retrospect startup item to run its backup software. I tend to disable this functionality, as it often is not updated for the operating system actually being run and can cause problems with setting up. Instead, I use Shirt-Pocket Superduper for backing up. I'm not sure the Maxtor is bootable on a MacBook Pro, but when you first get it, you'll want to reformat it with Disk Utility to have a GUID partition for optimized backing up for the MacBook Pro.
If you plan to use it with a Windows machine, you'll not be able to use it for full backing up, but at least data files will store on it, if you format it FAT32. Your alternative is still to format it GUID, but get MacDrive by Mediafour for your Windows machine to be able to read the drive, or network it use the built-in networking of the Mac as described here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=19652
If you aren't, well the above paragraph is just extra non-essential info!
