1TB Toshiba Iomega external is restarting itself during boot-up phase.

I have a 21inch iMac with a 1TB Toshiba iomega HDD for time machine and backup for other files. It's been working great for a while, but usually when i boot up now while its connected it restarts itself and keeps doing it until the imac is fully loaded or until i unplug it. it still works fine, im just worried if it gets worse i could lose it, any way i could fix it??

So i've been researching my problems since nobody here seems to be able to answer my question.
It may be the GPU.  It seems like ever since I've opened my macbook pro, I've opened a pandoras box of ******* slicing razors.
I'm thinking the logic board is ******.
So now I'm guessing I'm going to have to pay a **** load to fix my computer.  ****!

That sounds like you have some hardware that is not working

That is my experience the main reason for spontaneous

  • TS1372 Restoring my Ipod is not working. It restarts itself during the boot up process and the white bar under the apple logo is always so close to reaching the end but it restarts and tells me to restore it again.

During the boot up process, the white bar under the apple logo is always so close to reaching the end but it restarts and tells me to restore it again. I have tried different usb ports and restarting computer but it wont work
    Ipod classic 120gb

Have you tried restoring through iTunes?  If not, try pressing and holding the center 'Select' button and the top 'Menu' buttons together until it restarts.  Once you it restarts and you see the Apple logo, press and hold the left 'Previous' and center 'Select' buttons together to go into the diagnostics.  You can run tests through that and see if it's a hard drive issue or software issue.

Subsequent startups on the same day proceed without interruption and without a problem report, until the first startup of the next day. I normally shut down the computer over night. The iMac operates normally after any of these startups, interrupted or not. Apple Hardware Test reports no problems.
This behavior is annoying, but not very problematic so far. Does anyone have a likely explanation or suggested cure?

    BDAqua wrote:
Have you tried just sleeping it at night?
It appears to be graphic card related.
Have you blown the dust out lately?
    Thanks very much for answering.
Sleeping the iMac at night would work, I'm sure, since it's only on a cold restart that the unplanned restart occurs. Not as satisfying as curing the issue, though.
Apple Hardware Test reported nothing wrong with the graphic card, but the computer is not cold by the time the test is run, so I guess that could still be it.
I'm sure there is dust inside after three + years. Apple didn't really want me to open up my iMac, but this Core 2 Duo model can be opened by lifting off the glass with suction cups, I believe. Maybe I will do that and dust, and see if that helps. There might even be something I can reseat.
Also, I believe that on my next cold startup I will try single user mode and see if that prevents the restart.
    Thanks for your suggestions.

  • IPod restarts itself on boot screen repeatedly

I am unable to turn on my iPod nano 2gen normally. Neither is recognized if plugged in to a PC. When I hold the center and menu buttons together the apple logo appears for 5-6 seconds, then it fades out as if I have held them again. The whole thing repeats over and over again unless I press and hold the center and << buttons. The diagnostic menu appears and all tests are successful. If I enter disk mode (center button + play/pause) when my nano is connected to the PC, "OK to disconnect" appears on the screen and immediately shuts down. Then iTunes says "iTunes cannot recognize this iPod at this time" and new device called "Apple recovery (DFU) USB driver" appears in Device Manager under Universal Serial Bus Controllers. I think that the problem is in the firmware, but there is no way to restore because iTunes doesn't recognize anything. Nor the 5 R's work since I can't enter (or stay) in Disk mode. Can somebody tell me how to restore the nano or I'll have to get it serviced?

  • 1TB Toshiba External HD Clicking

Purchased my black 1TB Toshiba Canvio External Hard Drive in July, and a few days ago I heard/felt a continuous clicking. I have been more than cautious with my drive, never dropping it, never tilting it, and never unplugging it when the led was flashing. Any way I could possibly revive it? Sometimes after I unplug it, and plug it in again, there is no clicking for an hour, and my files are readable, but then it starts back up with the clicking again

    Hi
You should be troubled if the HDD starts to make some strange sounds.
It could be a first sign of a HDD crash.
At the other hand my HDD clicks also but not always this happens sporadically
I could not find a reason for that but I have created some backups in order to be on the safe side.
I think you should backup the data too.

  • My 1TB Toshiba External Hardrive no longer works on my MacBook Air

I got a 1TB Toshiba External Hardrive and had no problems with it and added some pictures and everything to it however no it no longer works, or even shows up in the devices when i plug it in. I Saw that some others had the same problem and can't even find where they suggested to go to try and change it to read and right.

Not that I can tell. Suspiciously, we did run a salvo of updates from Software Update and the problems started immediately after, but none of those appeared to be directly related to Airport functionality (firmware or otherwise). Just to be sure, I took the "safe" steps of repairing permissions, re-downloading the last combo update & re-applying it. I also searched for any firmware updates related to Airport. What's odd to me is that the firmware reported on her machine is different than that on mine. They're both Late 2006 Macbook models, so that strikes me as odd (but maybe it isn't). I wasn't able to find any updates that her Macbook was lacking, however.
My (working) firmware is: [type] AirPort Extreme (0x168C, 0x87), [version] 1.4.8.0
Her (not-working) firmware is: [type] AirPort Extreme (0x168C, 0x87), [version] 1.4.4
Based on the card type, it doesn't appear that they're different chipsets, so I'm not at all clear on why the firmware versions differ. Was there a firmware update for Leopard that wasn't available/needed for Tiger?
Also, I know for sure that there were no firmware updates performed during the last set of updates ... that's a more involved process, if I recall, not handled through the standard updater, I think.
    Thanks for the response!

Since I upgraded to 10.9.5, my macbook no longer recognizes my external  hard drive. How do I fix this?  External hard drive is a 1TB Toshiba formatted for mac.  Worked fine until latest upgrade.

Solved the problem by dumping my external HD onto another computer. Re-formatting and re-installing the data.  Not what I wanted to do but it solved the problem.

  • New Toshiba 3tb external drive not recognized at startup WIn 7

My new toshiba 3tb external drive (with wall wart power) is not recognized at start up (Win7). The message I get is that it is a USB storage device but can not be used until it is formatted (I already moved files to it). If I plug it in after start up it's fine and shows up as a toshiba storage device. I've used the 2.0 and 3.0 ports and it is the same problem (it has wall wart power). I have never encountered this problem with any other usb storage device  (an iomega 1tb and a WD 500gb) always plugged in and recognized at start up.
    Thoughts?

  • Mac Pro restarts during boot up

    Hi.
I have a Mac Pro at the moment with a problem. The machine turns on, gives a chime and apple logo, then it starts to load the OS, but during loading, you hear a loud click and the machine restarts itself.
I've tried replacing the memory, taking the hard drive out and booting from external, also tried replacing the PSU, but I always end up with the same fault.

And you don't mention the model year, OS version, whether you did the normal SMC Reset, or pull all the drives and try.
And it could be the graphic card.

  • Iomega external hard drive either 'not found' by Time Machine or is now in 'read only' format

I don't know what's going on with my iomega external hard drive.  Sometimes the HD is recognised by the computer; other times it isn't; if it isn't I can restore to an earlier back up via Time Machine app; but it's like the disk isn't writable.
Ten days ago, I had trouble backing up my iMac using Time Machine.  After turning it off and restarting my external hard drive, it backed up successfully.
However, today I am trying to back up my files, and TM tells me it can't find the external hard drive.  Nothing has changed -- I have been out of town this past week -- but somehow my HD now seems to be in 'read only' format.  It does turn on, and I could restore my computer to an earlier back up.
"Mac OS X can't repair the disk.  You can still open or copy files on the disk, but you can't save changes to files on the disk.  Back up the disk and reformat it as soon as you can."
Annoyingly, despite my HD not showing in Finder or on my Desktop (as it usually does), when I simply turn it off I get that warning message "The disk was not ejected properly".
Have tried verifying and repairing using Disk Utility, to no avail.
Am prompted to reformat but I don't have a good understanding of what this means and how to do it.  I'm guessing this would wipe the disk clean and I'd have to create the initial back up image all over again -- I'm reluctant to do this since this HD is my only back up and if it all goes tits up I'll be up that famous creek without a paddle.
Thoughts, suggestions, input all welcome and deeply appreciated -- thank you!

It's possible a heavy-duty 3rd-party disk repair app can fix it, but they're expensive (DiskWarrior is about $100), and there's no guarantee it can do it.

That will erase it.  See Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #5.
It sounds very much like the disk is beginning to fail, although it's possible there's a bad port, cable, connection or power supply (if it has its own).
I'd suggest getting a new one, and using it for your Time Machine backups; once you have a good backup there, reformat the old one (and select Security Options to write zeros to the whole drive -- if that fails, you know the drive is toast).  Use it for secondary backups, per FAQ #27.   If it has failed, get a second new one for secondary backups.

  • Iomega External Hard Drive not recognized on windows 8.1

I wanted to share this with others that may have or do run into the same problem. I used the iomega external drive 1TB on an XP computer for a couple years, then when that computer went bad, hooked it up to a windows 8. This worked perfectly fine, but last week I did the upgrade to windows 8.1 and the drive was no longer able to be read. It showed in disk management as unallocated.
I found a suggestion on using File Scavenger software to recover the data. I did have to pay for that software, but it not only found and recovered all my files, but also found missing daily backups that I thought were failing. Those must have been unreadable because my xp hard drive was starting to go bad.
After recovering and saving all my files to the computer (which did take a long time - 13 hours) I was then able to reformat the external drive, copy my files back to it, and continue to use it as always.
Hope this helps someone else who may be devasted on losing important or precious files.

The hard drive will not show up on the sidebar or desktop unless Finder preferences are set to do that:
In Finder's General preference section, make sure "External disks" is checked in the list of things to show on the desktop if you want to see them there.
Likewise, in Finder's Sidebar preference section, make sure "External disks" is checked in the "DEVICES" section to see them automatically appear on the sidebar.
But you don't need to do either for the MBP to recognize the drive, or to get files from its Time Machine backup set. To do that, you should use the Time Machine "Star Wars" interface. Pondini's FAQ's (already mentioned) tell you how to do that. Tip 17 is particularly relevant.

  • Macbook Pro Keeps Restarting Itself and then totally crashed

    Dear all.
    I am using Macbook Pro 13-inch (i7 2.9 Ghz, 8 GB DDR3, 750 GB) with OS X Maverick (10.9.4).
For the last few months, my Macbook Pro kept restarting itself and I usually ignored this issue until yesterday, my MBP fail to boot up, only display the grey apple logo and rolling icon below for almost 30 mins.
I tried the safe mode and reset NVRAM method and it still fail to boot up and sometimes a black text appears (aka kernel panic).
Then i took my macbook pro to the nearest Apple service provider and the technician said that it was probably due to the 750 GB Hard Disk since the HD itself is a faulty product, therefore we can't find any 750 GB HD nowadays. So he recommended me to replace my current HD with a new HD. I took his advice and I replaced it with 1 TB Toshiba HD. And then the technician reformat my MBP and installed the OS X Maverick. My Macbook pro able to boot up now.
However the next day I still find my MBP keeps restarting itself (until now) and take note that I didn't install any new softwares, I only updated the available  updates in Apps Store for the OS, iBooks, and iTunes.
Can anyone recommend me what to do? Is this a Hardware problem or software problem?
I'm thinking to switch back to OS Lion to see whether this is mainly due to OS Maverick.
    Thank you.

Unfortunately yes.   Since the computer is unable to boot up, that part of the software starts BEFORE the OS would.  Last time I had this problem, it turned out to be a faulty GPU (soldered to the logic board) and i needed to replace the logic board.    If you wanted to, you could indeed back up your personal data (you should ANYWAY, no matter what you do)  and you could try to do a fresh install,  but I'm fairly confident you are experiencing either faulty ram, or a faulty logic board.

  • IMac Keeps Restarting Itself. Help!

I'm hoping that someone can help with an issue I've been having with my iMac for a while now.
The iMac in question is a 24", 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo from late 2008 (If I remember rightly). The original HDD failed and so I replaced the drive myself. The replacement drive also turned out to be faulty. A few months ago (maybe 6) I replaced the HDD again and it has worked perfectly.
Recently, however, it has started to reboot itself quite frequently. It seems to happen when left alone for a while. More recently it has begun doing it when coming out of sleep mode. Today I have just noticed that it restarts itself when I insert or remove a Firewire external disk.
What I can do about this? Does any know what the problem might be?
Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.
This is the message I get on the report:

Boot into safe mode (restart holding down SHIFT key). If no KP, then uninstall these things and reinstal them one at a time until you identify the problem. If KP, then most likely hardware related. Run the Apple Hardware Test suite, extended tests at least twice, followed by Rember.  See
