1TB USB Disk with NTFS

I have AE with FirmWare version -- 7.5.1
and have Toshiba Ext HDD (USB) formatted with NTFS.
This Disk is connected to AEBS and it shows on AirPort Utility "Disk" Tab screen.
However I have NOT been able to see or connect this disk to any of my Windows 7 computer.
I have read lots of old posts saying that NTFS will not work.
Is it still true (with AEBS FirmWare ver: 7.5.1) or am I missing some configuration.
I have tried tweaking "Local Security" etc, but no luck.
Just wanted to re-confirm that, AEBS and NTFS combo will NOT work?

So, is there any way to get a PC to connect wirelessly to a hard drive connected to the USB port of an AEBS or Time Capsule?
The Airport Utility on the PC sees the external hard drive, but I am not able to get the backup software, or Windows XP, to connect to that drive.

  • Using the airport usb disk with playstation3...

anyone know how i can get my PS3 to see the USB disk hooked up to my AE, and use it as a media share?
I have a wireless-n AE, with a 250GB USB drive hooked up, and also a WD Mybook world edition 1TB server on a ethernet connection.
all the macs in my house see the drives just fine, but everytime i search for a media share on the PS3, it says 'no media shares found'.
i'm sure its a PS3 issue, but i was just wondering if anyone here has any experience with it, as i'm a complete noob when it comes to networking.
    thanks.

    a) WEP WPA password, ive never set one up for the airport, where do i find out what this password is for my PC?
You will set up wireless security (WEP or WPA) on the AirPort Express Base Station (AX)..using the AirPort Admin Utility, which is part of AirPort for Windows.
    b) Everytime I run the Airport Express Assistant it gives me an error message saying "Windows is not the current network manager...please change Windows to the default", I dont know why I get this error and I assume windows is the one managing the networks I use.
Your PC has wireless capability...correct? The AirPort Setup Assistant requires a wireless connection to the AX.
    c) I can connect to the airport through windows, but when in the Airport Management Utility it does not detect the Airport
Connect your PC directly, using an Ethernet cable, to the Ethernet port of the AX, and then run the AirPort Admin Utility to configure it.
    d) After all this, will Windows and iTunes allow you to stream music thru the Airport Express, like it does on my mac with itunes???
Yes, you will be able to stream iTunes from your PC to the AX, either wired or wirelessly.

  • DO NOT install Airport Extreme update 2008-4 if using usb disk with TM

I have Airport Extreme and a WD 1TB disk with two partitions connected to the Extreme. Other partition just for stuff and the other for Time Machine backup.
Today I installed Firmware update 7.3.2 and disaster struck. I noticed that Airport Extreme was reporting a disk problem. I disconnected the drive from Extreme and use the Disk utility to find out what is the matter. The partition used for backup needed repair, but couldn't be repaired. I had to format it.
The worst thing (besides losing all my TM backups): After I got the disk formatted, I checked TM. It wasn't possible to do Time Machine backups any more for a USB disk connected to Airport Extreme.
    Anyone else have the same?
I strongly recomend NOT to install the update if using Airport Extreme + USB disk for Time Machine.
I'm really dissapointed if this is an issue connected to the update 7.3.2.

    Hello
I'm having issues too wtih the drive connected to my airport extreme basestation but not the same kind.
Sometimes (5 time a day) the airport extreme doesn't respond anymore and it doesn't appear in the airport utility. Then every body is disconnected from internet (even if the light stil green...).
I have to reboot the basestation manualy.
I also have two partitions (datas and TM). I'ts very anoying th only solution i found right now is to unplug my drive...
Hope Apple will fix this ASAP ...

  • USB disk with Lion recovery partition + storage partition shared by Mac & Windows: Windows can't read it.

I have a Lexar Express Card flash drive (16GB). It works the same as any USB flash drive.
I use it to move files between Mac OS and Windows 7/Bootcamp: Drag files to it in one OS, reboot in the other OS, take the files back off.
Recently, I discovered the Lion Recvoery Disk Assistant, which allows you to create a Lion Recovery Disk on an external drive (just in case). So, I decided I would use a ~1GB partition on the express card for the recovery disk, and leave a ~15GB partition for the same file sharing I am used to.
This setup requires that the disk use a GUID Partition Map with a HFS+ file system for the recovery partition, and I use a FAT32 file system for the shared partition. The partitioning was done in Mac OS Disk Utility, and then I think the Recovery Disk Assistant modifies it further by adding an EFI partition.
When I try to access the disk in Windows 7, it says it needs to format the drive first (which it shows to be a ~200MB "volume" on a disk with ~15.4GB "capacity"). From what I have been able to find on my own, Windows 7 should be fine with a disk using a GUID Partition Map, and both OSs can use a FAT32 file system. So why does Windows only see the 200MB EFI partition at the first section of the disk, and not the other partitions, particularly the FAT32 file sharing partition?
The last thing I will mention is that the disk is being seen by Windows as a MBR/Master Boot Record partitioned device. I'm assuming this is the GPT/GUID Partition Table's protective partition's fault; the one MBR partition that keeps the GPT partitioning safe from software that doesn't recognize or know about GPT.
I'm asking on the Apple discussions because it's in Boot Camp and I'm primarily a Mac user. If anyone knows a better, Windows-focused place to ask, please say so!

You really need to search first as there are A LOT of post's with the same question. Different issues with different Models.
What model/year do you have and what OS were you using first? Snow Leopard (10.6) is the last one that came with a CD/DVD with the computer.
You insert the disk when it's done installing W7 and reboots into Windows then you insert the 10.6 MacOS Installer disk for the Windows drivers. Lion does it a different way.
    PR7 wrote:
...........because I lost the OS X Lion install disk that came with my Mac)..........
Lion (10.7) is only a download now, there are no more physical disk's, (unless you pay the extra money for the USB installer thumb drive directly from Apple). So if your computer came with 10.7 Lion installed then you will not have a physical disk. There should be a "Repair Partition" that you use to boot to if you need to  repair or to reinstall the Lion OS.

However, when I log on my Windows account and I insert the bootable OS X Lion install disk, Windows doesn't read it. I can't even find the disk in Windows Explorer or even Right Click on the disk.
    Please Help!
    Thank You!!!
I don't believe the Boot Camps drivers are in the Lion download anymore, ( to keep the download smaller?), the only way you get them now is when you start BCAssistant, it will prompt you to download them onto a CD, or USB drive. You have to download and install the Boot Camp drivers separately. You then insert it when it's done, when Windows boots.

  • Can't mount USB disk with the atribute of  fix and read-only

    Hello All,
I have a usb disk which is set as fix(non-removalbe) and read-only. I tried to connect it to Macbook version 10.4.11 ,but it failed to mount the disk. However, connecting to 10.5.X and windows XP work fine. I am wondering is it a bug specifically in 10.4.11 only ? Could I get any patch for this problem ?
    Thanks,
    Ying

HI Ying and Welcome to Apple Discussions ...
    Try repairing disk permissions.
Quit any open applications/programs. Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac.

  • Change partitions on disk with NTFS and Mac OS Extended

I have a 1.5TB external drive formatted with 3 equal size partitions:  1 NTFS and 2 Mac OS Extended formats, each one ~500GB. I'd like to remove the NTFS partition and use the whole drive for the 2 Mac partitions.  Could I copy the NTFS data to one of the Mac partitions, then delete the NTFS partition, and then enlarge the two remaining partitions, of course without losing the information that's already on each of them?  My system is OSX 10.7.5 -- Lion.

Probably maybe, with a fair wind & some luck…
It depends on a few factors, such as the order of the partitions on disk, how the disk was originally created, what partition scheme it uses (e.g. GUID, Master boot record…). It also depends on if all that data can be crammed into an existing partition.
I doubt you want to hear this, but it is the safest option… backup the data on every partition before you begin modifying the disk structure.
You have nothing to lose with solid backups on another disk, disconnect it to be extra cautious.
If this disk fails to repartition or you find that the 2 remaining partitions won't not expand to fill all the free space (it just happens sometimes) you can create a new partition table & start over.
Disk Utility may also complain when you try to resize or delete a partition - sometimes it waits until the last button is pressed to begin a task only to tell you something isn't possible!
I wouldn't attempt this 'copy, delete, resize' unless I could afford to lose all the data on this disk, it should work, but there is too much room for error.

How do i get solaris to mount it, i've tried devfsadm, i've tried mount /dev/dsk/c4t0d0s2 without any joy.

I found out that zfs is the perfect solution for that scenario. I have lacie 1TB drive and I could get ufs to work but the drive only showed up about ~500g and not 1tb, similar situation as yours. I tried all the possible way that I could think of and found out that zfs is way better and easier.
Try format -e and see if it comes out as single disk or still multiple disks..
And check on the following site for more configuration on zpool and zfs and also look for solaris 10 docs.

  • Can not mount USB disks with Disk utulity

Today I received finally received the new Airport Extreme. I had no problems installing it in my WDS wireless net and combining it with the Airport Express.
BUT... mounting disk does not work.
I have 3 USB 2.0 Disk: 2 x Maxtor and one WD. All of them are seen by the Airport utility, but do not show up in the Disk Utilty on none of my Macs.
    I realy tried everything:
    - connecting them all at the same time using a USB 2.0 hub,
    - connecting them one by one using an USB cable,
    - reformating on my mac using Mac OS Extended (journaled) and connecting them,
    - renaming the names of the disk to simple names: no space, no numbers,
    - renaming the BaseStation.
No result, the onlything I see apearing in the Disk Utility Menu is the name of the BaseStation. If I click on this, a "Login" dialog box is displayed, if I try to login (all options tested) no result, and after a long time-out sometimes a message is displayed Not able to mount "drive-name.
Is there somebody who knows what to do?
    Regards, Marc
    2 x iMac G5; 2 x MacBook, iMac G4   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

After you reformatted did you by chance add any files while directly attached to your mac.
Network drives won't show in disk utility, use airport disk utility to find them and have them mounted or use the network list in your finder.

  • I need to share an USB disk with a Vista machine

I currently have two MBP's accessing a usb drive plugged into a USB hub off an AEBS wirelessly. I need at add a Vista machine to the mix. I have Bonjour for WIndows installed on the machine and all it does it allow me to connect the the printer that is attached to the AEBS. I have Googled and found nothing that gets me a solution. This seems like it should be fairly easy or is it?
Ideally, I would like to be able to access this drive remotely from my home office. Pardon the pun, but is that even remotely possible?

    That looks right.
Remote Access: Open Finder and select Go > Connect Server and type in your IP address or FQDN.
Note: Most ISP's would have blocked NetBIOS ports required for Windows File Sharing to work. And Vista will unlike to gain access to your AEBS's AirDisk.
Local Access From Windows PC: Open the AirDisk Utility and select the name of AEBS and click connect.

  • Error in Time Machine configuration with two usb disks??

    Hi all,
I applied two 1TB usb disks to my Mac Mini with OSX 10.9 server (latest version) and configured them within the Server.app for time machine. As far as I understood, there should only be 1 backup destination 'backups' presented to my mac clients afterwards. But I always see 'backups' and 'backups-1', meaning both usb drives. Did I misunderstand the manual or is there something wrong with my Server.app?
Thank you for your help and best regards, BanditCH

    Hi Wolfgang,
That just won't work. You can get a bigger external drive of 3TB for instance, that will work as one destination.
For this to work with 2 drives: every client needs to choose between two destinations, because both drives appear as a unique destination in TimeMachineServer. There's no way around it.
To be futureproof consider a dedicated NAS with 2 or more disks that supports timemachine so your capacity can grow when there are new bigger drives available. With 2 drives in a RAID mirror inside a NAS you have the best of both worlds. Client backup on a RAID mirror, when one drive fails it does not affect the entire backup. Connected to that NAS you can use an external USB disk for backup. Wonderful
    Goodluck

  • Can't archive Time Capsule to external USB disk

I have a Time Capsule 1TB to which a bunch of Macs back up. I have also set up a 1TB USB drive with one partition as a backup drive (the other partition is for a bootable clone of my desktop).
Soon after setting up the TC/external disk, I had archived the TC backup to the external disk using the Archive function under Disks in Airport Utility. When I reconnected my disk a few days later, it mounted all right, as it showed up as an Airport disk in Airport Utility. But when I go to Archive, the Destination pulldown is grey, and shows "No Airport disks available".
I've unmounted the disk and run Repair Disk under Disk Utility, and the volumes checked out fine. I even tried downgrading the Airport firmware to 7.4.1, but no change.
Given the reported failures of TC, I am very nervous about not having a backup for the Time Capsule.
    Please help.

Solved. The disk is not available to archive till there is enough free space for a complete archive. So I had to connect the drive to my iMac, delete the earlier archive, and reconnect it to the Time Capsule. Then it showed up. Now that's risky, since during archiving (12+ hours for my setup) if the TC goes down, all backups are gone.
Feature request: Could a future version of Airport Utility allow selective replacement of archived backups?

  • Accessing shared time capsule disk with two accounts

    Hey guys,
I have an airport time capsule (5th gen) and want to access a connected USB disk with my Mavericks macbook. This basically works fine: i can mount it using the finder (usually I do an automatic mount when starting my account, since I put the drive into the Login Items for my user), and the disk is secured with a disk password.
However, I have a quite annoying issue when using two accounts on the same macbook, which is my standard use case as I share the macbook with my wife: Only the user that first accesses the disk can use it, the second user gets a "no access permission" error for the disk. The second user can then disconnect the drive and reconnect, but I find this very annoying, because I have to do it all the time, and I'm wondering if I'm the only user with this problem.
Is there any way to specify access rights for the drive, such that I can access it with both accounts simultaneously? BTW, I've already tried to define specific access rights on the disk (Context Menu > Get Info > Sharing and Permissions), and I tried to change the disk security mode to "With accounts" and "With device password" - none of it made any difference.

Only the user that first accesses the disk can use it, the second user gets a "no access permission" error for the disk. The second user can then disconnect the drive and reconnect, but I find this very annoying, because I have to do it all the time, and I'm wondering if I'm the only user with this problem.
That is how Apple built it. No fixes.. no repairs.. it is a hassle of protected type file systems. Windows you can do all sorts of fudgery.. but the lack of protection (amongst others) is why you use a Mac.
Is there any way to specify access rights for the drive,
This is not a rights issues.. it is that one user at a time is allowed. Each user must logout before the next user can gain access..
I do not know of any workaround.
Pondini recommends using disk image for data on the TC.. since you can otherwise mess up the TM backup. See http://pondini.org/TM/TCQ3.html
His comments don't apply to your usage of the USB drive.. but his workaround may help.
I am wondering if you create the sparsebundle on the USB drive and allow everyone access, once mounted on the computer it might allow two user accounts access at the same time.. Sorry I have no need to try it and I cannot recall anyone attempting.. but it might present a way around the issue.. !!
