1Z0-051 without OCA certification

Hi everyone.
I am currently a university student with a great interest in SQL. As a result, I intend to take the SQL Fundamentals qualifications (1Z0-051). I believe passing this exam alone is not sufficient to get an OCA certification, but I am not really interested in becoming a DBA later, I can see myself as a developer instead. I know that there is a SQL Expert qualification too, but I believe I do not have the neccessary experience to pass that exam yet, so I am starting with 1Z0-051. My question is, even though it does not give me a certification, is there still a way it can be placed on my CV so that the employer can track it down/check its validity? Do I get an ID or some sort of code after passing the exam, which can be used for others to look my results up online?
Thank you,
All the best,
D

Just a SQL developer?  If you take (and pass) the exam 1Z0-144 after 1Z0-051, you will become an OCA PL/SQL developer.  That will be a verifiable Oracle certification.
...is there still a way it can be placed on my CV so that the employer can track it down/check its validity? Do I get an ID or some sort of code after passing the exam, which can be used for others to look my results up online?
You can certainly put on your CV that you passed the Oracle SQL Fundamentals exam.  You will get a PDF of the test results that you can show to an employer if they ask.  However, the only options in CertView on publishing credentials to third parties is for certifications, not test results.

Hi. I am in a fix and so need your help.
I am planning to give 1Z0-051 Oracle Certification exam(Oracle Database 11g- SQL fundamentals). However, I will be unable to give my 1Z0-052 exam(Oracle Database 11g- Administration-I) at this time. So, if I give only 1Z0-051 exam, then will it carry some weightage in my resume? Also, if I pass the 1Z0-051 exam, then how should I put it in my resume? That I am a Oracle Certified individual?

(If you need proof of this copy the report from the test center ... you cannot really get from of this from Oracle. Certview will publish certifcations, not exam passes). If you take this online there is no proof it was you you actually took the exam).
However you are not Oracle certified and must not put that in your resume ... you may only put it in your resumé when you have proof from Oracle you have been awarded a Certification.
The weight of this exam pass, and indeed any exam pass or certification, can depend on the reader(s) of the resumé; and the nature of job you are applying for; and the strength of the other candidates for the job. Suppose an employer was looking for CV's for a DBA job. Assuming the HR/agencies let the CV's through they might get (in practice a higher number of DBA OCPs might be expected):
Person with a 1z0-051 pass and degree and no experience.
5 with 9i DBA OCP, most with MA degrees, with no experience
10g DBA OCA obtained 3 years ago with no experience.
Apparently experienced DBA with no formal qualifications and no degree.
Now the first and last candidates have a high probability of being what they say they are, but the first wuld be no good if an experienced DBA was needed. It would be necessary at interview to be careful to check the others had the experience level claimed due to certifications being obtained though cheating and fraud. Its also worth noting DBA OCA does not cover backups / restores in depth.
However if what was needed was someone to query database results as a result of some tests the first candidate might acutally be the most suitable .. assuming he has studied the 1z0-051 carefully. The 10g OCA might not have done SQL ... the experienced DBA might feel that was not a suitable job for him, and the 9i DBA OCPs may have rushed (or cheated) their way through 1z0-007 as quickly as possible and would not be interested / capablle of this work.
(Please note this article is biased against 9i DBA OCP ... at one point my understanding is there was a particularly high level of cheating/fraud against this certification and some poor training from some WDP institutions ... which is a pity for those achieving the certification through due work and good training).

  • Certification topics for 1z0-051

I am preparing for the SQL fundamental exam 1z0-051. I am following the book :"OCA: Oracle Database 11g Administrator Certified Associate Study Guide: (Exams1Z0-051 and 1Z0-052) " by Biju Thomas.
Question: The exam topics in Oracle's certification website do not indicate subtopics. eg. Group functions is a topic listed but are sub-topics such as ROLLUP and CUBE part of the certification?
    Thanks in advance.

can you refer a sybex book for this,so that can tally the explanations?...............
For anyone who has SQL experience, or has studied SQL as part of a WDP, or has a general SQL book already then either of the two books (+ their associated practice test in book and on CDROM should be adequate for 1z0-051:I did not get any testkit CDROM forr 007 even.as i am under WDP for 9i.
    * ISBN-13: 978-0071597869: OCA Oracle Database 11g SQL Fundamentals I Exam Guide: Exam 1Z0-051 (Oracle Press)i found 2008 edition in our local market.so ISBN no. did not match.
    * ISBN-13: 978-0470395127: OCA: Oracle Database 11g Administrator Certified Associate Study Guide: (Exams1Z0-051 and 1Z0-052) (Sybex)this book (probably written by Biju Thomas).
The first is usually cheaper, the second while more expensive also covers 1z0-052. I have seen the first book and it is adequate ; and I know of no reason why the second should not be adequate too. While for the self studying for OCA/OCP 10g/11g candidates i somtimes hint to people they should consider getting both Oracle Press and Sybex books; for this exam i tend to think this is not so necessary for most people.
    wrt the book you referenced:
    * ISBN-13: 978-0071498500: Oracle Database 11g SQL (Osborne ORACLE Press Series)
This book is designed to cover 11g SQL in general. It is more orientated towards learning and reference. While not tied to an exam it does probably cover most (if not all) topics needed for 1z0-047. Probably most professionals would find it as easy to look up oracle documentation most of the time. I actually have it, mainly because I it was an easy way for me to get a grip on the newer ANSI join forms whcih I am less useful. I cant say its not useful, but certainly some people would find it of limited use and others are quite happy with it.This book still to come in local market(india).
Thanx.whatever..........but remember this sybex books have very little hands on practice.ie.hardly you will find a query that is left for your practice. All of questions in MCQ basis.

  • OCA - Choice between  1Z0-144,1Z0- 047 and 1Z0- 051

    Hello everyone,
I am a developer working on Java EE and our DB is Oracle 10g.
I intend to take an exam that prepares me for :
    1. Writing DDL,DML and usage of functions
    2. Creating cursors,procedures,triggers,indexes etc.
    3. Focus on writing efficient queries - sub-queries,joins,manipulating BLOBs etc.
    4. Creating & using Java-like 'collections' in the DB
Given the above requirements, I decided to go for OCA certification. I realized the following path from Oracle's site :
    _1Z0-047_ Oracle
    Database SQL Expert
    OR
    _1Z0-051_ Oracle Database
    11g: SQL Fundamentals
    I
    AND
    Program with PL/SQL
    _1Z0-147_
    OR
    Oracle Database 11g:
    Program with PL/SQL
    _1Z0-144_
Now,I am quite unsure as to which exam I must target first.
Given my requirements, please suggest the best approach( I know the basics of PL/SQL )
    Thanks !

Thanks for the replies, guys !
Just to prevent the fragmentation of the information, I am posting my further question in this thread itself.
My objective now is to consolidate the study material for 1Z0-051.
After scanning the previous threads, I got the following suggestions :
OCA Oracle Database 11g SQL Fundamentals I Exam Guide: Exam 1Z0-051 (Osborne ORACLE Press Series) by John Watson and Roopesh Ramklass
SQL Developer guide from the oracle documentation at http://tahiti.oracle.com
OCA: Oracle Database 11g Administrator Certified Associate Study Guide: (Exams1Z0-051 and 1Z0-052) ISBN-13: 978-0470395127 sybex.
I prefer to read a certification oriented book to get started and the other stuff - forums, documentation, references for practice.
Hence, please suggest the appropriate study material.
    Thanks !

  • 1z0-051 Certification - Advice Needed

    Hello Guys,
I have been reading, learning and practicing Oracle 11g SQL Fundamentals for the last 3 months and finally ready to take up the Exam 1z0-051 by October 15th 2009.
The only book I used: OCA Oracle Database 11g SQL Fundamentals I Exam Guide (Exam 1Z0-051)
Version I practiced: Oracle 11g (Practiced almost using the SQL Developer and not the SQL*Plus)
Samples Questions I worked on: I got access to Skillport's 1z0-051 Testprep course (Sponsored by my Company).
I feel confident enough but then I would like to hear from the ones who already passed this exam.
Are there any other material or samples questions I need to work or concentrate on?
How would you rate the exam from a beginner's perspective. (When I say beginner, I mean a person with just 6 month experience in Oracle Database.) Is the exam dead easy or moderate or really difficult?
Please advice. Thanks for your time!

If your performing adequately on the questions with OCA Oracle Database 11g SQL Fundamentals I Exam Guide (Exam 1Z0-051) and I believe you've put in lots of practice besides then its probably time to have an actual exam attempt.
Certainly you seem to be on the approach advocated by [http://blogs.oracle.com/certification/2009/05/the_route_you_choose.html]
I personally, and I accept people are different, feel that from once I feel I have an 80% chance of passing then I need to have a shot at the exam simply because if I fail I'd be in a better mindset to attempt a retry.
There are additional tests you can buy from the authorirized providers ( [OCA Oracle Database 11g SQL Fundamentals I Exam Guide (Exam 1Z0-051)] ) or you can get additional practice tests from the Sybex book.
I must admit I value practice tests like golddust; the second time I attempt the a practice question I may remember the answer so I always like to leave a practice tests late into my revision cycle and if possible to take the last one (or two) just before I go for the exam.
But IMHO I think you've put a lot of commendable effort into studying and its worth having a go at the exam. Take usual exam advice, my chemistry tutor used to say If all else fails read the question ... Dont be thrown off course if the first few questions throw you and be aware of the time remaining; there is no point running out of time and not attempting an answer to all questions. You mave the option of marking questions for special review. And the ones you can answer correcctly do so; quickly double check your answer, and move on; on dwell on it ... the time will be beter spend elsewhere. Exam technique only comes to most moere mortals with practice.

  • OCA 1Z0-051 self-study material guidance

    Hi!
I'm preparing for OCA 1Z0-051 exam and have been reading the book "OCA Oracle Database 11g SQL Fundamentals I Exam Guide: Exam 1Z0-051 (Osborne ORACLE Press Series)". I have few questions:
    - Is the book enough for preparing and passing the exam? If not, what other books do I need to study?
    - Apart from the book's questions, do I also need to try some other exam practice? If yes, could you please provide me the info.
For me it is not possible to attend training. However, I can do self-study. Apart from the above book, if I'm missing something in the self-study, could you please guide me.
Many thanks and looking forward to your kind reply!

So I would suggest that you do more practice about different problems. Thats what is main required for going for the sql paper.

  • Forums and Books for 1Z0-051 Certification Test

I am starting to read my Certification book from Oracle Press on test 051, SQL.
What other forums or websites will I find helpful for this effort? I mean both Oracle approved and non-official Oracle forums. I am interested also in non-offical forums so people can say uncensored or candid things about the test or the products.
A good answer would be a list of the forums here on the Oracle website that will help as well as some websites or forums not on this website that are good for test 051 and the material I need to know.
I also want to know what certification books or manuals cover this material or test? Are there some other popular certification books for test 1Z0-051? Which Oracle manuals cover this material? Again a good answer would be a list of books and a list of manuals.
I read somewhere that the online Oracle Library now costs to access. Is this true? I am on a strict budget.
I read something about Oracle products on this website but as you might expect they only list Oracle products or approved products.

The main problem one has in doing certification training is avoiding unauthorized learning material (A lot of web searching will lead to braindumps which are bad).
Obviously the SQL forum will help.

If you are talking about http://docs.oracle.com this is free
I read something about Oracle products on this website but as you might expect they only list Oracle products or approved products.Proably what you need to be looking for is getting Oracle XE downloaded to your local machine, possibly in a virutal machine, virtualbox, vmware server. You will need specific linux versions, xp pro or vista business.
Visit http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/index.html .. oracle XE is currently there as a top download.

  • 1Z0-051 Certification

Dear master blaster of oracle . I am here to start my discovery in the galaxy of oracle.
I am currenly working on Java application using oracle database 10g .
I would like to go for 1Z0-051 certification . I am using McGraw.Hill.Osborne .SQL.Fundamentals.I.Exam.Guide.Exam.1Z0-051 as referernce
I had read the book once , It covers general ascpect and few hidden thing which we will never untill peolple has spend years working on oracle OR if oracle source code is made open.
What other reference material is availble from oracle documentation which could be relevant before I appear in the examination
Thanks in advance for kind people in this forum

I believe that book is fairly good, as are many of the Oracle press books. It covers most of the exam topics and it's failry readable.
You could always look at the Oracle Database SQL Language Reference 11g Release 2 if you want to reveiw specific topics. It's definitely not something I would read start to finish though as it is more of a reference. It also covers a lot more than what you'll need for the Fundamentals exam. It can be downloaded at: http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E11882_01/server.112/e17118.pdf
    Good luck!

  • Is the only 1Z0-051 SQL Fundamentals I certification useful/recognised in the international labour market?

    Hi,
I've been studying for passing the 1Z0-051 "SQL Fundamentals I" exam before taking the 1Z0-144 "Program with PL/SQL" exam and so I wonder if the only (for the moment) "SQL Fundamentals I" certification may be considerated useful/recognised in the international labour market or if it's "only" an intermediate certification for taking the "Program with PL/SQL" exam.
I ask for that 'cause I wonder if once I'll have taken the "SQL Fundamentals I" certification, this might be added in my curriculum or if it's just an intermediate certification
    Thanks!

    Hemant K Chitale wrote:
...The SQL exam 051 or 061 by itself doesn't have value. But the SQL Expert exam 047 is a standalone certification exam.
I really don't like the statement that the SQL Fundamentals exams have no value.  Passing the exams will not earn a certificate.  That is not the same thing as having no value.  I am in the final stages of hiring an assistant to act as a backup for me.  For several reasons the company decided to hire a recent college graduate with minimal (read almost zip) Oracle knowledge.  I plan to assign them a set of reading material to study and certification exams to prepare for.  I wrote an article detailing the specific steps on Certification Magazine here:
How to train your assistant: Certification makes the minion - CertMag
The very first test I will have them work towards is 1Z0-051. If that test 'had no value', why would I bother doing this? The SQL Expert Exam (1Z0-047) earns a certification and so obviously is'the more valuable exam, right? Wrong (at least in my opinion). The SQL Fundamentals exam has a better coverage of the basic SQL elements that I need to be confident my assistant has learned.  After my backup has completed all of the certifications listed in the above article, I may well have him move on to some more advanced exams, including 1Z0-047, among others.  However, much of the SQL Expert exam content is on seldom-used elements of the language.  I don't think I have ever used the ROLLUP, CUBE, or GROUPING SETS operations for real-world work. Likewise I cannot recall having a need for multitable INSERTs. I have never had a need to set a column to UNUSED.  I think I've used regular expressions less than five times in twenty years.  I use CONNECT BY PRIOR more than that, but still seldom enough that I often Google the syntax when I need to write a hierarchical query.
In short -- why would I bother making them spend time studying aspects of SQL that they almost certainly won't use very often.  I need them to be knowledgeable about the SQL syntax that they will be using on a daily basis.  That's what the SQL Fundamentals exam contains and that is why that exam is more valuable for people just starting out with the Oracle database.

  • OCA: 1Z0-047 Oracle DB SQL Export vs. 1Z0-051 11g: SQL Fundamentals I

    Hi All
Passed my 1Z0-042 today (now that's a monkey off my back, so off to celebrate with something red, fermented & >12%ABV!), and am now looking at which other exam to take to complete the OCA.
Now for me, this looks like a no-brainer....
1Z0-047 has a much wider topic list (http://education.oracle.com/pls/web_prod-plq-dad/db_pages.getpage?page_id=41&p_exam_id=1Z0_047) than that of 1Z0-051 (http://education.oracle.com/pls/web_prod-plq-dad/db_pages.getpage?page_id=41&p_exam_id=1Z0_051), and has a pass mark of 66% against 60% for the 11g, and is over 40GBP cheaper (I assume because 1Z0-051 is non-proctered).
Am I missing something really obvious??
    Hic!
    bt

    >
    >
    >
Also, if I buy the non-proctered exam today (to head off any further nasty future prices rises...grrr...), how long is it valid for i.e. how long do I have before I need to take it online?
I thnk its unlikely (but I could be wrong) the prices will change much again (particularly upwards) for a bit except/unless currency exchange variations. So I wouldn't rush to book. I think online you can book immediately, and for proctored you should normally have slots a few days in advance at most 5 day centres apart from near end of terms and quarters and possibly on fridays or at the end of special offers.
Although the 1z0-051 is 'non-proctored' I believe it can also be taken proctored for the same price. Doing it online has risks of distraction and any connection issues may be your problem. If I did it online I am sure there would be a someone wishing explore the local electricity substation or play with a JCB when I was attempting to take my exam.

  • Training for 1z0-051?

    Hello all,
I have a requirement by my employer to achieve Oracle Certification.  I passed 1z0-052 last week after studying off and on for the last year and a half.  Next up is 1z0-051 or 061.
Fortunately my employer is funding a training class for this exam.  We have 11g in our environment, so it is the 051/052 track I started on.  I noticed on the 051 exam page that the recommended training is no longer offered.  I'm planning to take the training class linked from the 061 page (Oracle Database 12c: Introduction to SQL Ed 1.1).  Is this adequate/sensible training for the 051 exam?  Or should I scrap 051 in favor of 061?  I see that either will count towards OCA/OCP.
I am speaking out of honest ignorance here, but it seems that the material covered for 061 is completely applicable to 051.  Any sage advice for me?  Am I off track in my assessment?
Many thanks for any help you can offer.
    -Alan

The 1Z0-051 and 1Z0-061 exams have about a 95% commonality in topics.  The 'Introduction' section was added to 1Z0-061 and the 'Creating other schema objects' section that was in 1Z0-051 has been removed in 061.  As such, the 061 training should prepare you for the vast majority of the 1Z0-051 exam.
That said -- there is no reason not to simply take the 1Z0-061 exam if that's what you are taking the training for anyway.  I generally consider picking one over the other to be largely a toss up. Last week someone had the Oracle Press book for 1Z0-051 and was asking about taking 061.  I suggested going with 051 since they had the study materials for it.  In your case, the opposite applies, so I would suggest that the 1Z0-061 exam would probably be the (slightly) better choice.

  • How to pass 1Z0-051 exam

I prepared to this exam well by reading and implementing the book topics of "OCA Oracle Database 11g:SQL Fundamentals I Exam Guide (Exam 1Z0-051)" + plus articles reads from Oracle website itself; but unfortunately i failed twice, the reason isn't that i did not digest the SQL material or found hard topics to understand, but it is more about the timing of the exam which it limit my thinking process and make me confuse to select the right answer; as you have 70 questions to read, understand, deduce and then answer, as in average time for each question is one minutes and twenty seconds.
I admitted that sometimes i have problem in calculation, but i believe if time is aloud more to me i would easily figure out the question.
I need some advice and instruction here if that possible.
    Thanks in advance

You don't mention if you took this test online .... for various reason my personal opinion is people may be under more time pressure taking it online. I have read somewhere also that if you retake an exam within 5 days you are statisitically almost highly likely to fail it again.
The time element is obviously one part of these exams. 1z0-051 can be done within the time with a little to spare.
Not all questions will take the same amount of time.
In a proctored exam you have the following aids available to you:-
    - A timer indicating time left
    - The ablility to mark a question for review later.
    - The ability to leave a question blank.
    - The ability to make notes on wipe board.
Decide a strategy of how you are going to approach questions. For instance i may choose to:
    - If I know the answer to a question straight away, mark it, double check then move to next question.
    - If I am unsure mark the question, make best possilble answer, note on my wiprepad any certaily wrong answers.
    - If I think I am going to take too long on a question (more than 2 mins) make notes of where I'm at, mrk it for review and move on.
Basically you should be able to get through some questions fairly quickly. Others may take longer.
You may also be resented with exhibits and things ..... its very easy to take too much time looking at all the information and getting overwhelmed.
Read the question, elminate wrong answers and move on as quickly as possilbe.
The should already have been practice exams on the CDROM with the book you have bought. These are less useful the more you use them, as you remember the answers.
Additional practice tests can be purchased from [http://www.oracle.com/global/us/education/certification/sts.html] (Either buy transcender or SelftestSoftware, not both).
You may be able to speed up your calculations with time, however if you are having trouble with them permanently then perhaps this is not the career for you, as you may have trouble if you get a job also.
However you may find with practice it all comes into place and you speed up.
