1Z0-117 preparation

Hi,
I'm preparing for 1Z0-117 SQL Tuning certification exam. Can someone suggest me some materials in order to prepare for the parallel processing section which is in the exam topics?
This is the OU course http://education.oracle.com/pls/web_prod-plq-dad/db_pages.getpage?page_id=609&p_org_id=1001&lang=US&get_params=dc:D71882GC10,p_preview:N , but i'm asking if there is an alternative, or a selective material to learn from (the documentation is too large).
Thanks!

However, the documentation is really the definitive source of information:

We are preparing for 1Z0-117: Oracle Database 11g Release 2: SQL Tuning, There is shortage of material available on net. There are actually a fair number of articles about the material covered on 117 on the net, but yes, the test is new enough that cheaters have not had much of a chance to email around illegal material such as dumps yet.
Can anybody please provide books or Dumps and share more idea about the exan. There is a significant amount of legitimate material you can use to study for the exam here:
    http://www.oraclecertificationprep.com/apex/f?p=OCPSG:EXAM_DETAILS:0::NO::P2_EXAM:1Z0-117
As for ideas about the exam -- it's probably the hardest Oracle certification exam I have ever taken:

  • What Book for the new 1Z0-117 '11gR2 SQL Tuning' ? No OPC available yet.

Since 1Z0-117 '11gR2 SQL Tuning' is a new exam on beta yet, except Mathew Morris's summary is there a comprehensive Exam Reference Guide like OPC Oracle Experts Exam Guide ?
Is the +"*Oracle Press Database 11g Release 2 Performance Tuning Tips & Techniques*"+ sufficient ?
Or I just can look at the Covered Topics and study them from it and other resources ?
    Thank you

Hmm understood.I will have to map the Sources Topics to the Exams Topics than just having a "served food", like an ordinary exam, its fair enough.
Its just the concepts concerned are many and many are complex, so specifially here I would require a specially fit OPC book like for SQL Expert.
Luckily I'd oredered yours at least.
See SQL Experts, I found the topics quite affordable and I advance quick about 1-2 chapters + Sumed Revision per day, and without questions or errors.
    I guess because of
    1.the OPC Book
    2. since my curent internship is on SQL Analysis
    3. my Thesis was creating an essential DBMS in C++ with embeded SQL Parser and PhP ODBC driver from Scratch
So I may try start having a look at SQL Tunning also, thus I dont think I could really achieve in paralel preparing for both and with the Internship also.
Thank you very much once again.

  • 1Z0-117 topics

Looking at http://education.oracle.com/pls/web_prod-plq-dad/db_pages.getpage?page_id=5001&get_params=p_exam_id:1Z0-117&p_org_id=&lang= , i noticed that the principal categories of topics are SQL Statement Tuning and Parallel Queries (those with red). Last month i saw also a Data warehouse section (with red) with two content topics, but currently no. However, the Oracle Database 11g: Administer a Data Warehouse is still present in the Exam preparation (Oracle University Training and Preparation) section. Why?
Are data warehouse subjects not related anymore to this exam, and not needed for preparation, since nothing about data warehouse can be seen in the 'Exam topics'?
    Thanks

I know that "mistake", operations vs operators Yep -- I spent many hours beating my head against the wall trying to fit 'Operators' into those topics before I finally figured out what they meant to say.
Will that be related to 11gR2 (like D52163GC20 course) so it will contain the latest information? I am using all 11G R2 documentation to research for the guide.
It will be public or we must pay for it..?You don't have to do anything at all. But no -- the guides aren't free. I don't make a fortune from this series by any means. However, if I gave the guides away, there would be zero incentive to spend incredible amounts of my free time researching the information. My day job is a Developer/DBA. That I like because I love writing code. It's like Soduku puzzles to me. I like solving problems and seeing the results. By contrast, writing study guides is mind-numbingly boring. I like the results, but a good portion of that is simply "Woo Hoo! I'm finished".
I hope to have the 1Z0-117 guide out within a week of the exam going into production. The missing Data Warehouse topics has thrown a wrench in the works. Now I don't know if I should work on those topics this weekend as I planned (and maybe have to throw them out) or start expanding other sections since they will conceivably play a greater role in the production exam. Probably I'll work on the Data Warehouse topics just in case.

  • Diff between 1Z0-054 and 1Z0-117

    Hi,
What are the main differences between the Performance Tuning exam and SQL Tuning? Of course, I have read the exam topics of both exams, and the first is mostly for DBA-s, and the second only for tuning SQL statements. Does a simple application developer need the Performance Tuning exam, which as I can see is mostly about instance tuning.
    Thank you.

An application developer with no DBA access would find little use for 1Z0-054.  Unless the privileges in the database were dangerously loose, application developers would not have the required rights to make use of most of the topics covered by the exam.
That said, be aware that some of 1Z0-117 is also on topics that generally require DBA-level access.  I don't believe that developers on most systems would have the privs to create SQL Profiles or SQL Baselines, for example.  They might not even have the privileges required to run the SQL Tuning or SQL Access Advisors.  However, most of the exam is on information that SQL developers can make use of.

  • 1z0-147 preparation

    Hi All,
I just gave my 1z0-051 exam and passed with 100%. I prepared for that exam from Sql Fundamentals Exam guide from Oracle. Now I want to go ahead and give my 1z0-147 in a month. I have an enquiry on where to prepare from for the exam. I did not find any book dedicated to this exam from Oracle. Could you please suggest on the name of the book that i can go ahead with.
    Thanks in Advance.
    Vamsi

The first one (Programming, 4th Ed) is the one you want. The rest are excellent but best delayed if on a budget.
In my opinion, almost all of the 'exam study' books have some deficiency. If you want to use those, consider getting TWO and comparing. If two have a difference, you know that is an area you need to look at Oracle's docs or ask in the forums. If they are the same, chances are high that they are correct - or you've hit one of the common myths. (A good DBA is always on the verge of total paranoia. Trust no one. Believe nothing. They ARE out to get you.)
Also consider getting an official Oracle course on CD Rom for self-study. Much less expensive than instructor led, and - if not correct - at least it will be consistent with the exams.
(ANd yes, there are errors in the exams as well. Mostly because the exams make some assumptions about the environment. We all know about assumptions, don't we ...)

  • 1z0-052 preparation and real practice...

    Hello.
I have successfully passed SQL Fundamentals I exam recently and my new aim is Administration I. I purchased necessary 1z0-052 exam guide by John Watson, however without practice it is impossible to neither get skills nor pass exam. Will it be enough to try applying everything that is in a book on Oracle 11g XE that was published recently? There are different versions of Oracle 11g that are available for download but I am not really sure which is enough for preparation. Should I pay for those versions?
I kindly ask you to advise me the necessary applications, systems that could help me to get skills for both certification and real practice.
    Rustam Aliyev

If you're trying to pass the DBA track exams, I would suggest downloading the enterprise edition of whatever version of the database you want to be certified on rather than using the express edition. The OTN license will generally allow you to prepare for certification exams (or any other self-study purposes) using the enterprise edition without purchasing a license.
The express edition does things a bit differently than the other editions from a DBA standpoint because it is designed to be used in an environment where there may not be a DBA. I wouldn't use the express edition to prepare for DBA certification exams.

what will be the appropiate time required to study and prepare for the exam

I will exclude super-learners from my answer.
IMHO a DBAs with a lot of experience on 9i and a reasonable understanding of the subject might reasonably take at least 3 weeks fairly intensive study before attempting 1z0-042
Someone who has attended the relevant Oracle instructor led class should be able to put in 3 fairly intensive weeks of practice and study and pass.
Without the assistance of instructor led training then perhaps 3 / 4 months; perhaps longer. But if you cant get experience the exam pass and certification wont count for much.

  • 1Z0-043 preparation - Security part?

    Hi,
I'm preparing for OCP 10g Certification. Now i'm a bit cunfused about the topics. I bought serveral books for preparation and all of theses books have a chapter with "Configuring Security for the Listener" and Database Security (TDE, Data Pump encryption, VPD and so on) but Oracle Education website states that these are not part of the exam.
As we are not using encryption features, I would like to skip this part. Does anybody know if the mentioned topics are part of the exam?
    Thanks in advance

what you think about dumps ?DO NOT USE THEM.
I realise you are under great pressure from something to risk them .... but do not. My personal belief is Oracle/Pearson has the ability to detect if you have used them
are they really usefull ?? They are cheating. If in doubt read that the route you choose article referenced earlier. I gave you that link is case a miscreant started offering you dumps.
If you are found to be using them then your exam result can be nullified. And other exam oracle results you have take can be nullified. You may also be barred from Oracle Certifications for a period.
where can i find them ?I am obviously not going to tell you, I could get de-certified myself if I did. From my reading of exam agreements even seeking them can result in cheating.

While originally for apex 3.2 .. this exam was upgraded for apex 4.0

this is a hurried answer from me.

  • Doubt in Joins - 1Z0-051 Preparation

    Hi,
In Chapter 7, p.no 317 of 'OCA Oracle Databse 11g, SQL Fundametals I Exam Guide' regarding the joins, there is below lines.
If no joins are N-1 joins are specified in the WHERE clause conditions, where N refers to the number of tables in the query, then a cartesian or cross join is performed.
If an adequate number of joins conditions are specified, then the first optional conditional clause specifies a natural join, while the second two optional clauses specify the syntax for right and left outer joins.I didnt quite understand this well. For ex.
    select regions.region_name , countries.countries_name from  regions , countries where  regions.region_id = countries.region_id.
    Countries table has coutry_id , country_name, region_id.
Regions table has region_id, region_name.In the above case, it is a natural join, But as per the lines from book, it has N-1 (2-1) joins in the where clause, so this is a cartesian or cross join.
I might be wrong in uderstanding it clearly.
Can anyone help me in understanding those 2 lines regarding the joins.
    Thanks in advance. :-)

    agathya wrote:

Might be a printing mistake. If there are less than n-1 join conditions or if there are no joins, then the result will be a Cartesian Product or what you consider as CROSS JOIN.
The number of rows in a Cartesian product is equal to the product of number of rows in the first table and number of rows in the second table and the number of rows in the third table. In the following example it will be 5*2*3 = 30 rows.

  • 1z0-054: Oracle Database 11g Performance Tuning Expert

I am planning to give the exam 1z0-054 to get the certification, "Oracle Database 11g Performance Tuning Expert".
The Certification Path says that, if you are and "OCP DBA 11g" then you can directly take this paper, and there is no Instructor Led Training requirement. Therefore, I decide to prepare for it by my own. Can someone guide me about the study material and dumps?
    Regards,
    Ahmer Mansoor

Therefore, I decide to prepare for it by my own. Can someone guide me about the study material and dumps?First of all, the word 'dumps' has a specific meaning. It is shorthand for 'brain dumps' which are illegal and can cost you this certification and any others you have taken.
    http://blogs.oracle.com/certification/entry/0477
Second -- there currently is no study guide or book specific to this certification available at this time. I write study guides and this one is actually next on my list once I complete the current book for *1Z0-117: Oracle Database 11g Release 2: SQL Tuning*. I won't have a guide for 1Z0-054 until some time in May most likely. That said, I have some links to legal study material on the companion website for my guide series relevant to topics for this exam. It also has links to the Oracle documentation that contains information you need. Once I start writing the book for this exam, the links will expand rapidly as I research the topics for it and the documentation links may expand as well.

  • 1Z0-052. Two big cert guides and official documentation - why so many contradictions ?

In this discussion i will compare two 1Z0-052 prepare certification guides (one of these is marked as "Oracle Press" !!!) and official Oracle Database 11g Release 2 (11.2) documentation (the exam "1Z0-052" has been validated against this documentation) in effort to understand why these sources have so many contradictions (direct and undirect).
    Begin with this one :
    1) "(Oracle Press) John Watson - OCA Oracle Database 11g: Administration I Exam Guide (Exam 1Z0-052)", "Chapter 2: Exploring the Database Architecture", page 54 :
"Note that from release 8i onward, checkpoints do NOT occur on log switch..."
    2) "Oracle Database Concepts 11g Release 2 (11.2) Part Number E25789-01", "13 Oracle Database Instance", "When Oracle Database Initiates Checkpoints" :
Thread checkpoints OCCUR in the following situations:
    - Consistent database shutdown
    - ALTER SYSTEM CHECKPOINT statement
    - Online redo log switch
    3) "Biju Thomas - Oracle Database 11g Administrator Certified Associate study guide", "Chapter 8 Introducing Oracle Database 11g Components and Architecture", page 413 :
"Checkpoints OCCUR automatically when an online redo log file is full (a log switch happens)."
    My question is :
Does checkpoint occur or not on log switch ?
    Many other contradiction follows....

    Hi John,
it will be my sixth certification in the last 3 years (i have all major certifications in Java)... But it is the first time i see that the Official Documentation of the product doesn't reflect completely the Certification Preparation Guide (i'm not going to say that you book is wrong, i'm about the complete compliance).
I cannot place my questions in another oracle DBA forum, because there most frequently the responses are "If you see the Official Documentation you find that..." and now i know that Official Documentation sometimes mismatch for the exam.
You (and I) certainly know that the certification exam is the multiple-choice questions... If i will find the question :
When checkpoints occurs (select all valid questions) ?
    1) Consistent database shutdown
    2) Issue of "ALTER SYSTEM CHECKPOINT" statement
    5) Online redo log switch
after your explanation (see your first reply) now i know what can i must check and what i must not check, but before your explanation with small knowledges of database how can i be shure that your information is correct if the Official Documentation says the contrary ?
If i will find the question :
What is the checkpoint position ?
    1) is the SCN (the System Change Number) in the redo stream where instance recovery must begin
    2) ...
    3) ...
If read only your book i cannot see SCN, i see RBA. How can i know that SCN and RBA are the same think if neither Oracle Documentation neither your book say that ? What another sources or guides i must have ?
And what about the location of the "alert_SID.log" file ?
What you suggest me about this exam question :
Which initialization parameter determines the location of the alert log file?
    1) DIAGNOSTIC_DEST
    2) BACKGROUND_DUMP_DEST
    3) ALERT_LOG_DEST
    4) USER_DUMP_DEST
If i read you book i select "BACKGROUND_DUMP_DEST", because in your book i see :
"The alert log is a continuous record of critical operations applied to the instance and the database. Its location is determined by the instance parameter BACKGROUND_DUMP_DEST, and its name is alert_SID.log, where SID is the name of the instance.... The directory ADR_HOME/trace (ADR is automatic diagnostic repository) is used as the default value for the instance parameters USER_DUMP_DEST (trace files generated by user sessions) and BACKGROUND_DUMP_DEST (the alert log and trace files generated by background processes)."
But if i read Official Oracle documentation i select "DIAGNOSTIC_DEST", because i see :
"The parameter BACKGROUND_DUMP_DEST is ignored by the new diagnosability infrastructure introduced in Oracle Database 11g Release 1 (11.1), which places trace and core files in a location controlled by the DIAGNOSTIC_DEST initialization parameter."
Therefore if i read you book i select "B", if i read documentation i select "A".
