1Z0-117 topics

Looking at http://education.oracle.com/pls/web_prod-plq-dad/db_pages.getpage?page_id=5001&get_params=p_exam_id:1Z0-117&p_org_id=&lang= , i noticed that the principal categories of topics are SQL Statement Tuning and Parallel Queries (those with red). Last month i saw also a Data warehouse section (with red) with two content topics, but currently no. However, the Oracle Database 11g: Administer a Data Warehouse is still present in the Exam preparation (Oracle University Training and Preparation) section. Why?
Are data warehouse subjects not related anymore to this exam, and not needed for preparation, since nothing about data warehouse can be seen in the 'Exam topics'?
Thanks

I know that "mistake", operations vs operators Yep -- I spent many hours beating my head against the wall trying to fit 'Operators' into those topics before I finally figured out what they meant to say.
Will that be related to 11gR2 (like D52163GC20 course) so it will contain the latest information? I am using all 11G R2 documentation to research for the guide.
It will be public or we must pay for it..?You don't have to do anything at all. But no -- the guides aren't free. I don't make a fortune from this series by any means. However, if I gave the guides away, there would be zero incentive to spend incredible amounts of my free time researching the information. My day job is a Developer/DBA. That I like because I love writing code. It's like Soduku puzzles to me. I like solving problems and seeing the results. By contrast, writing study guides is mind-numbingly boring. I like the results, but a good portion of that is simply "Woo Hoo! I'm finished".
I hope to have the 1Z0-117 guide out within a week of the exam going into production. The missing Data Warehouse topics has thrown a wrench in the works. Now I don't know if I should work on those topics this weekend as I planned (and maybe have to throw them out) or start expanding other sections since they will conceivably play a greater role in the production exam. Probably I'll work on the Data Warehouse topics just in case.

    Hi,
I'm preparing for 1Z0-117 SQL Tuning certification exam. Can someone suggest me some materials in order to prepare for the parallel processing section which is in the exam topics?
This is the OU course http://education.oracle.com/pls/web_prod-plq-dad/db_pages.getpage?page_id=609&p_org_id=1001&lang=US&get_params=dc:D71882GC10,p_preview:N , but i'm asking if there is an alternative, or a selective material to learn from (the documentation is too large).
    Thanks!

  • What Book for the new 1Z0-117 '11gR2 SQL Tuning' ? No OPC available yet.

Since 1Z0-117 '11gR2 SQL Tuning' is a new exam on beta yet, except Mathew Morris's summary is there a comprehensive Exam Reference Guide like OPC Oracle Experts Exam Guide ?
Is the +"*Oracle Press Database 11g Release 2 Performance Tuning Tips & Techniques*"+ sufficient ?
Or I just can look at the Covered Topics and study them from it and other resources ?
    Thank you

Hmm understood.I will have to map the Sources Topics to the Exams Topics than just having a "served food", like an ordinary exam, its fair enough.
Its just the concepts concerned are many and many are complex, so specifially here I would require a specially fit OPC book like for SQL Expert.
Luckily I'd oredered yours at least.
See SQL Experts, I found the topics quite affordable and I advance quick about 1-2 chapters + Sumed Revision per day, and without questions or errors.
    I guess because of
    1.the OPC Book
    2. since my curent internship is on SQL Analysis
    3. my Thesis was creating an essential DBMS in C++ with embeded SQL Parser and PhP ODBC driver from Scratch
So I may try start having a look at SQL Tunning also, thus I dont think I could really achieve in paralel preparing for both and with the Internship also.
Thank you very much once again.

  • Diff between 1Z0-054 and 1Z0-117

    Hi,
What are the main differences between the Performance Tuning exam and SQL Tuning? Of course, I have read the exam topics of both exams, and the first is mostly for DBA-s, and the second only for tuning SQL statements. Does a simple application developer need the Performance Tuning exam, which as I can see is mostly about instance tuning.
    Thank you.

An application developer with no DBA access would find little use for 1Z0-054.  Unless the privileges in the database were dangerously loose, application developers would not have the required rights to make use of most of the topics covered by the exam.
That said, be aware that some of 1Z0-117 is also on topics that generally require DBA-level access.  I don't believe that developers on most systems would have the privs to create SQL Profiles or SQL Baselines, for example.  They might not even have the privileges required to run the SQL Tuning or SQL Access Advisors.  However, most of the exam is on information that SQL developers can make use of.

We are preparing for 1Z0-117: Oracle Database 11g Release 2: SQL Tuning, There is shortage of material available on net. There are actually a fair number of articles about the material covered on 117 on the net, but yes, the test is new enough that cheaters have not had much of a chance to email around illegal material such as dumps yet.
Can anybody please provide books or Dumps and share more idea about the exan. There is a significant amount of legitimate material you can use to study for the exam here:
    http://www.oraclecertificationprep.com/apex/f?p=OCPSG:EXAM_DETAILS:0::NO::P2_EXAM:1Z0-117
As for ideas about the exam -- it's probably the hardest Oracle certification exam I have ever taken:

  • 1z0-102 topics = enough?

    Hi,
I found this link about the 1Z0-102 exam http://education.oracle.com/pls/web_prod-plq-dad/db_pages.getpage?page_id=5001&get_params=p_exam_id:1Z0-102&p_org_id=&lang=
By your experience, I would like to know if these topics listed are the only topics I must to study to pass on this test.
I know if I study more, I will get more knowledge, but to focus on this exam, is it enough? If no, what more can I study?
    Thank you.

there are some exams where users complain that they encountered questions which are not related to any topic, I've taken a bunch of Oracle exams and I can say that no question has ever struck me as being outside the bounds of what the topics listed are. That said, with just a single sentence (or sentence fragment) to work with, it is not always easy to determine exactly what all information Oracle Education intends to be covered by a particular topic. When I'm writing study guides, I often have to do as much research to figure out what is meant by a given topic as I do pulling together the information needed to cover it.
I'm inclined to believe that most if not all of any such complaint are cases where someone did not realize the full extent of what was covered under a particular topic. This is not necessarily the testers fault, because, as I've said, the topics are sometimes vague. I have sometimes been surprised on exams by questions that I didn't expect, but I could still map that question to one of the topics from the list.
nor the response is in the official study guides (Recommended training and preparation). The official preparation isn't guaranteed to cover every single question that may appear on the exams. The Oracle courses and the exams normally are in very close lockstep in terms of the information taught and the information tested. Taking the recommended course, however, doesn't mean that you should not also prepare using a second method as well.

  • Newly Added Topics Missing From steve o'hearn Exam Guide (1Z0-047)

    Hi,
I am planning to take exam 1Z0-047.
I got to se the exam guide for this,(OCA Oracle Database SQL Certified Expert Exam Guide (Exam 1Z0-047)) by Steve o'hearn in market.
But it seems that syllabus of the exam is modified on 15th september 2014; and newly added topics are NOT present in the exam guide.
Below are the objectives and topics I feel are missing from the book.
    Restricting and Sorting Data
Use the SQL row limiting clause**
Create queries using the PIVOT and UNPIVOT clause**
Use pattern matching to recognize patterns across multiple rows in a table**
    Displaying Data from Multiple Tables
    Use the cross_outer_apply_clause**
    Using Subqueries to Solve Queries
Create a lateral inline view in a query**
Using DDL Statements to Create and Manage Tables
Truncate tables, and recursively truncate child tables**
Use 12c enhancements to the DEFAULT clause, invisible columns, virtual columns and identity columns in table creation/alteration**
    Manipulating Large Data Sets
Use explicit default values in INSERT and UPDATE statements**
We can find material on these topicsover internet(in fact I have actually worked on few of these topics already as part of my job.)
But i prefer referring to book as it helps to understand the scope.
I just joined the oracle forums, and not sure if I am placing this discussion on correct forum/category.
A humble request to advice if it is at wroing place.

I am just thinking what next course should I take ?
Immediate target will be obviously  some PL SQL related test like 1Z0-147.
BUT what to do after that ?
In my work experinece so far, I have worked as a developer, senior developer(mainly in maintenace projects , both OLTP and OLAP projects I have worked for.
that is, small as well as relatively big data volumes.Right from simple DB to DW systems of big enterprise corporation where millions of transactions happen and enter into system each day). I have  also participated in database designing when I worked on project where database was being designed from scratch. so, I am aiming/aspiring for a role something like Designer  or architect roles in the long run.
I'm glad you found my page useful. I actually recommend 1Z0-144 over 1Z0-147.  The two exams are equivalent in their results, but I feel 144 is the better exam.  Also, 147 was almost retired at one point.  OU backed off, but may put it back on the chopping block at any time.  I wrote an article explaining why I prefer 144 here:
    Oracle PL/SQL Developer Certification: 1Z0-147 or 1Z0-144?
As to the step after that, 1Z0-146 is the obvious one to gain the PL/SQL OCP.  147/144 will only gain the OCA-level cert.
If you want to end up as a designer or architect, eventually you must get into database design, which would argue pursuing the DBA track.
Millions of transactions implies a significant requirement for performance tuning which would argue for the SQL Tuning (1Z0-117) or performance certifications (1Z0-054/1Z0-064).

  • 1z0-054: Oracle Database 11g Performance Tuning Expert

I am planning to give the exam 1z0-054 to get the certification, "Oracle Database 11g Performance Tuning Expert".
The Certification Path says that, if you are and "OCP DBA 11g" then you can directly take this paper, and there is no Instructor Led Training requirement. Therefore, I decide to prepare for it by my own. Can someone guide me about the study material and dumps?
    Regards,
    Ahmer Mansoor

Therefore, I decide to prepare for it by my own. Can someone guide me about the study material and dumps?First of all, the word 'dumps' has a specific meaning. It is shorthand for 'brain dumps' which are illegal and can cost you this certification and any others you have taken.
    http://blogs.oracle.com/certification/entry/0477
Second -- there currently is no study guide or book specific to this certification available at this time. I write study guides and this one is actually next on my list once I complete the current book for *1Z0-117: Oracle Database 11g Release 2: SQL Tuning*. I won't have a guide for 1Z0-054 until some time in May most likely. That said, I have some links to legal study material on the companion website for my guide series relevant to topics for this exam. It also has links to the Oracle documentation that contains information you need. Once I start writing the book for this exam, the links will expand rapidly as I research the topics for it and the documentation links may expand as well.

  • 1Z0-051

    Hey,
I have just started working, and since my work profile deals with sql and pl/sql development primarily I want to go for 1Z0-051 exam. My query is as follows:
1.I want to know the level of difficulty to expect. I plan to study for the same from the official guide for 1.5 -2 months. Will it turn out to be enough?
2.Is the helping material like the simulation exam absolutely necessary given ?
3.Does a OCA certification with relatively lesser experience useful?
    Thanks in advance.\_/

What are your thoughts about the simulation exams provided in the cd with 1Z0-051 watson guide?Well there is a couple of mistakes, the exam, particular the downloaded bonus one, can seem a little clunky and even annoyingly buggy.
My view on smulation exams and test questions are that i regard them to be rare golddust. I only use them after all my other preparations are complete. And even then only one at a time. In other words I use them to confirm my skills and identifiy gaps at the end of my preparation.
Generally the question set can be used for exams or for learning. If you use them for learning you may get to the exam point quicker, but there is danger of learning the questions and not the exam topics.
Apart from that can we also take help from the exams on the cd's for exams 1Z0-007,1Z0-047, while preparing for 1Z0-051?1z0-007 will cover a comparable topic set and level to 1z0-051 therefore sample questions and anwers will generally be valid.
1z0-047, while it is a superset of 1z0-051 topics, will generally have questions that concentrate on 1z0-047 specific topics and to a higher difficulty level. Therefore IMHO 1z0-047 questions will probably be more of a hinderance than a help to people studying 1z0-051.
If you really are massively into simulations, and have the money, Oracle have a Kaplan IT as a practice exam provider. See http://certification.oracle.com/ - Preparation - Practice Tests.
    - (Nearly all other simulations you will find on the net are braindump simulations and must be avoided)

is this book is sufficent to crack this?

    Thanks,
PraveenTo make a steam locomotive go one needs fire, water and steam. You can struggle by for a bit with a shortage of one of these.
And I think a better way to think about your question is:
IMHO To pass 1z0-047 you need knowledge practice and experience.
    - And you can something squeeze through if one of these is a little weaker and the others very strong.
From the book you can gain knowledge (as indeed can the oracle documentation). IMHO If you gain it all, the knowledge from the book is sufficient for passing the exam.
You can also use the book to get a little test practice. (And perhaps a little practice of the SQL itself).
The book however doesn't give experience.
    - Having said all this I feel starting from zero trying to pass 1z0-047 is likely to result in failure.
Better in my opinion is study for 1z0-051 first. It's a lot gentler on the brain. And take that. It's a lot cheaper if you fail it and need to retake. And the exam is easier (though you might have to learn more detail in places, which perhaps isn't a bad. thing).
........... But if after studying for 1z0-051 you elect to skip it and go for 1z0-047 direct that is your choice. 1z0-051 is a subset of 1z0-047 HOWEVER there will be more detail on some 1z0-051 topics on the 1z0-051 exam.

worth take the 147 exam? This is my opinion, I do not make the rules, and those who make the rules reserve the right to change the rules without notice, though they are unlikely to do that.
    1) If you pass 1z0-147, that pass will forever remain valid forever (unless you are found to break certification agreements (essentially cheat or disclose questions / answers)).
    2) Examinations are usually withdrawn after at least 3 months clear notice. (eg 1z0-001 recently).
    3) 1z1-144/1z0-044 is shown as planned to complete beta on 10-Sep-2009, and there will be a few week gap until the (non-beta) exam appears. (Experience has shown this date may slip).
    4) There my reasoning is the earliest reasonable date for withdrawal of 1z0-147 would be january 2010, in practice it will probably continue on well beyond that.
    5) If you achieve Oracle PL/SQL Developer Certified Associate via 1z0-147 then that certification will stand for ever.
    6) In my opinion are topics for 1z0-144 seem a vast improvement on 1z0-147 (in fact I am not impressed with 1z0-147 even though I passed it).
However I suspect while both 1z0-144 and 1z0-147 both exist, and while direct study information on 1z0-144 seems sparse, many will plump for 1z0-147. (See the numbers on this forums going for 1z0-007 rather than 1z0-051).
Regardless of which you pass , you goal should surely be to know 1z0-144 topics well. Bear in mind however, if you take the beta 1z1-144, results will not be published until mid october 2009 earliest.

    Hi
in the introduction to oracle 9i study materials it contains 20 chapters
but in the exam topics section , it contains only 12 sections. (first 12 chapters of the book)

This is a good and exact and authorative reference to what is in the exam. Very occasionally these topics change, but I would anticipate them to be fairly for 9i.
(As an example the 10g 1z0-042/1z0-043 topics changed when the exam went from a 10gR1 based exam to 10gR2 based exam)
    >
So is tht means exam question will only concentrate on first 12 chapters of the study material
Hopefully you can work this out with reasonable certainly
If their is an obvious 1-1 mapping between the exam topics and your first 12 chapters ... then bingo! (ie I mean you have a high confidence probability)
And if later chapters do not relate to exam topics then your confidence level should increase further (they may relate to another exam, their content may imply this)
At the end of the day you should be confident you have the exam topic covered (though trying to determine what is meant by an exam topic (and depth required) can sometimes be difficult without interpretation).

PauloAs I am sure the Lewis and the Kyte and perhaps even he who peers over glasses would agree Before tuning Oracle Database it is best to tune the mind first.
Any before doing certification it is best to understand the difference between authorised(legitimate) material and unauthorised (illiegimate) material.
    http://blogs.oracle.com/certification/entry/the_route_you_choose
IMHO as your search question encompasses illegimate material, it is a poor search question.
By the time one is ready to start preparing for 1z0-054 one should be aware the only 'official' authorative documentation is that provided by Oracle Manuals, conveniently online via http://docs.oracle.com http://tahiti.oracle.com or other appropriate oracle.com URLs and the 1z0-054 topics page on the certification site http://education.oracle.com/pls/web_prod-plq-dad/db_pages.getpage?page_id=41&p_org_id=28&lang=US&p_exam_id=1Z0_054
Of course Oracle training courses are available, including a cdrom:

Edited by: bigdelboy on Sep 11, 2011 1:36 AM As far as I cam aware there are no exam focused books for this certification, however there are a number of general Oracle Tuning Guide books and some may find some of these useful.

  • Good marketable skills to have

I have been an application develper for over 20 years and now I want to focus on database development. I have been working on and off doing database work such as database design and development, database programming writing triggers, stored procedures and function and am very confortable with PL/SQL. What areas of Oracle should I focus on that will give me marketable skills and what is the market ooking for. Should I work toward certifications and if so which one is good to have.

This is not an answer from which are the most marketable skills, but it is an answer from what is achievable relatively quickly.
If you have experience in applications or bea stuff it is possible that is more marketable.
Checkout the forums faqs and blogs,
And checkout [http://www.oracle.com/education/certification] - Find out about the exams there and look at the exam topics.
As a developer three certifications to be looked at that you could probably achieve with good rapidity are:
    1) Oracle SQL Certified Expert
    2) Oracle PL/SQL Developer Certified Associate
    3) Oracle PL/SQL Developer Certified Professional
My suggestion of course to take are as follows:
1z0-051: I'd take this first to get used to taking certification exams. There's an Oracle Press Book that covers the subject matter for this quickly as well. (Some woudl say take 1z0-007; for you 1z0-051 would give more respect).
1z0-047: If your sql is good and you think you your up for it take this. It gets you a certificate. If it doesnt suit you or you think it might take some time bypass and get on with PL/SQL exams.
1z0-147: This gets you the PL/SQL developer OCA. My opinion is this exam is a bit old in the tooth. I said something about it on [this thread|http://forums.oracle.com/forums/thread.jspa?messageID=3383966]
    > 1z0-144: this is an exam just out currently in beta. Great - except the length of time you may need to wait for your results which could be an issue. I think 1z0-144 topics more relevant compared to 1z0-147.
    > If would be worth taking except your enegy would be more useful spent in getting OCP.
1z0-146: This gets you your OCP (but you effectively have to have OCA first). This is the exam that is more likely to push you.
In all events avoid unauthorised training material. To be safe that means buy oracle press/sybex books or use practice test authorised by oracle (transcender/Self Test) linked from the oracle web site [http://education.oracle.com/pls/web_prod-plq-dad/db_pages.getpage?page_id=208]

  • Which Oracle certfication to go for if you are database tester or working on testing side?

    Please help on this.

I presume you have already got the ISTQB Certified Tester certification; which is probably the priority certification to achieve.
I assume you are working with 'classic' oracle rdbms (not MySQL ... etc ... etc.  oracle actually provides about 5 or more database types).
    The choices from oracle are:-
1z0-061 : This is an exam only and not a certification.  But it is pitched at the level you are likely at and study for it will benefit you work if you are using SQL to query the database. (Ignore 1z0-051 it is effectively the same thing and you might as well get the 12c version).
If you are want a certification then you have two choices:
      SQL OCE  (1z0-047)
-- This is a superset of 1z0-061 ... however this means in practice one does not have to study the 1z0-061 topics to the same depth ... which actually means a person if you position may lose a little from this.
      PL/SQL OCA (1z0-061 + 1z0-144)
--- This is a possible target if you are involved with some PL/SQL .... however if you never touch it then it may not be an option for you.
There are no easy choices; SQL OCE is a big step and tough exam; and PL/SQL OCA may not be where you want to go.  I wish there was an OCS exam targeted at people like you (Maybe 1z0-061 with a little Pl/SQL anonymous blocks for reporting).
I would essentially suggest to study for 1z0-061 ... you should find you get rapid payback into your work by doing the study.  When you approach the point when you are ready to take the exam then review whether to take it (I personally would) or whether to continue straight for 1z0-047 (which I personally wouldn't).
    Others will give different suggestions.
