2.0.1 update forcing library/iPod sync, despite "manual" setting

I just updated to iTunes 2.0.1, and it is now forcing me to sync my iPod with my iTunes Library - even though I have my iPod set to "Manually manage iPod music & videos."
If I try to bypass or cancel out of the sync, I get an error message claiming that it will erase all the unsynced music from my iPod.
If I agree to sync, but then stop the sync manually, and then go to delete the songs it's transferred from my iPod back into my library, I get this message: "are you sure you want to remove the selected songs from your iTunes library? These songs will also be removed from any iPod which synchronizes with your iTunes library."
This is frustrating. I don't have the space to keep 8 gigs of music on my computer - hence the reason for the iPod! I back the music up onto CD, keep it on my iPod, and then delete it from my iTunes library. Is there any way to get around this?!

try this. open iTunes, and then under Preferences (Edit > Preferences), under the Syncing tab, check *Disable automatic syncing for all iPhones and iPods* then try connecting again.

  • ITunes Library & IPOD sync.

When I installed a newer version of ITunes, my playlists disappeard! However they are still in my IPOD. If I connect my IPOD now to my PC, will the playlists be added to my ITunes, or erased??
    Please help.

You can't sync your music back from an iPod to iTunes, the transfer of music is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod so the answer is no your playlists will not be added.
If you are using the iPod in manual update mode, your iPod is safe from being accidentally erased when you connect to an empty iTunes after reinstalling your software. However if your iPod is set to automatically update you will get a message that your iPod is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press *No*. Pressing "Yes" will irretrievably remove all songs from your iPod. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual.
You can use a keyboard command to prevent your iPod auto-syncing with iTunes. While connecting the iPod to the computer on Windows hold down the Shift + Ctrl keys (on a Mac hold down the Option and Command (⌥ and ⌘) keys). This will stop the iPod from auto-syncing with iTunes and the iPod will appear in the source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto sync and then you can let the keys go. This may take between 20 to 30 seconds depending on your computer. Then go to Preferences>iPod and check the "Manually manage songs and playlists" box: Managing Your Songs Manually

  • Does Sync trump Manual setting?

I have my iPod set to manual update due to a space issue (my music library has grown larger than its 40GB). But I miss the inclusion of the iPod's play count stats and so forth. If I go to the File menu and select Sync, will it just update that info, or will it defeat my Manual setting and try to load my entire library onto the iPod?

A bit more searching on Doug's Applescript for iTunes there is one called "Synch iPod-iTunes Data" that...
"Script synchronizes select data between your iPod and iTunes. The data that can be synchronized are "Date Last Played", "Play Count", "Rating" and "Comments". The data can be transferred from iPod to iTunes or the reverse, or can be synchronized between the two."
which might be able to allow you to remain with manual syncing AND sync playcounts back to iTunes.

Ooh ooh, just found another one called "Append iPod Play Count to iTunes Tracks" that...
"This script will add the Play Counts of either just the selected tracks or all tracks on an iPod to the corresponding tracks in iTunes. (For users who manually manage their iPod tracks.)"

  • I have an iPOD mini library and now have a IPhone 4S.  I updated my library and synced my phone to the library but can not figure out how to get the music library to download to my  iphone

I have an iPod mini library which I have update. I now have an iPhone 4S which I have synced to the library using a MS XP computer. I can not figure out how to get the library to download to my iPhone?

Thanks,  This caused me to go back and try again since the solution seemed so simple.  What I did was when it started downloading, it started with the iphones apps to my computer.  I did not want the apps downloaded on my computer so I stopped it.  If I would have waited, the music was uploaded right after the apps were downloaded.

  • Trying to update iPhoto library and sync

I have two MacBooks: 1 is running OSX 10.6.8 with iPhoto 8.1.2, and the other is running OSX 10.5.8 with iPhoto 7.1.5.  I had about 22 gigs of pictures on each computer, so I recently combined them on an external hard drive using iPhoto Library Manager.
I am simply trying to find a way to store the pictures on a hard drive and access it on either computer, but I am unable to do so. If I open the library on iPhoto 8.1.2, it tells me "The photo library needs to be upgraded to work with this version of iPhoto" but I don't want to do that because then I will be unable to open the pictures on my other computer. If I try to open the library on iPhoto 7.1.5, it tells me "you can't open your current photo library using this version of iPhoto. You have made changes to your photo library using a newer version of iPhoto. Please quit and use the latest version of iPhoto."
I have tried updating, but Software Update does not tell me I need any new software, and when I tried to download iPhoto 8.1.2, it told me my computer didn't need the upgrade. What should I do?

You need to have the same version of iPhoto on both machines. That means updating the v7 to a v8 (or, in marketing terms, you'll need to buy and iLife 09 disk somewhere and install from that. Try Amazon or Ebay.)

How do I get rid of these photos? I have read other questions that say to plug the iPod into the computer and like un-sync it, but I downloaded the new iTunes and it doesnt have a photos tab. Does anyone know how to solve my problem? Please and Thank You, Megan!

Just what did you do to the computer?
It sounds like the iPodf is seening the iTunes libary as a new libary.

  • Can I sync my iPod Touch to my Library to update the Library....

Sorry if the title is confusing... I've experienced the dreaded HD failure and regrettably haven't backed up via Time Machine in well over a month... I am missing several Movies, Videos and about 80 songs from my Library that are all in my Touch still...
Is it possible to plug in the Touch and have it update the Library, instead of vice versa... (which is the typical sync)...
Thanks in advance for any input or advice...

  • Itunes Library was erased from my computer -Ipod synced and HELP!

Sorry - I am a brand newbie to iPod.
I recently got my 'pod. I loaded it up with a zillion mp3 files, and more, including videos I coverted from my Dvds and some videos I bought through iTunes.
    All was well for weeks.
THEN - my computer crashed, and my computer tanked, taking my itunes library with it. After getting the computer going again, I reinstalled itunes.
I had the mp3s backed up (most of them anyway) on disks. I loaded some of them back into the library, and tried to sync. First thing - my ipod HAD been named "Kerin's ipo"
Now it just showed as a drive letter "E". I loaded some files in the library, and synced. My ipod is set to manually update. I don't know how it happened, but it seems to have uploaded the new library control files or something?
This is the thing - the ipod still shows pretty "full." I had 25 gigs of teh 30 gigs free. It still showed only 5 gigs free.
When I show the "hidden" files, and look in the music directory, I see LOTS of files - but they all have funky names like XYZAV.mp3. When my mouse hovers over them, they show info that tells me the 'real' name of the file, such as "get info" might include. But the files are in no logical order. The videos are all mixed in and songs from one playlist or album are scattered over all the many folders.
Further, the new files don't seem to be actually in there. I DID see all the new files in the music and song list - but they wouldn't play - when I went to song view and started to play, it just loaded all the song names one after the other, but never played a note.
After erasing all the (i was afraid corrupt) music files and syncing again, the song folder is now empty again.
However - as mentioned before, the properties in My Computer list the ipod as nearly full still.
    My questions:
    a) how do I rename my ipod (not even sure how i did it - had something to do with the first time I connected the ipod to itunes?). I don't want it named "E" I want Kerin's iPo back. When I connect it as a disk, btw, it is still named that. But in iTunes it just shows as "E".
    b) How do I get to view my old directory structure and songs again? they are obviously still there!
    c) I have software (I've tried two diiferent ones - which both seemed to work ok before all this happened - Share Pod and another) which would let me get my unprotected songs BACK off the ipod, if only I could see the old directory from my ipod! But right now, neither of the programs seem to see the files that are clearly there and playable in the hidden folders. How do I get these files visible to the sharepod software? I assume this means I need a directory file or something for them to work from?
Can anyone help me sort this all out? I am not sure where to start, even for so simple a thing as making my ipod name show up again, and why won't it play the new files, let alone, why does it still show completely full?
If it were empty, I guess I could start from scratch - but there are things not backed up anywhere else yet, that I'd REALLY like to have back before I try completely brainwashing the pod and starting from ground zero. Also, I spent a LOT of time loading 25 gigs of stuff on there - I'd rather not have to do that all again - if there is some way to recover what is on there already, I'd love that option.
    Please help!
Thanks in advance to all the marvelous people who help each other here. I have been reading through these forums for hours and don't see answers to this situation - maybe it's so obvious, that's why no one has bothered - but I didn't see it in the online manuals, or here in the forums... maybe i'm searching in the wrong place? If someone can direct me to answers, I'll be MOST grateful!
PS: I'm not computer illiterate - just ipod dumb! Just got this darn thingie!

    a) See: How to rename your iPod.
b & c) If you can still the view hidden files, see this Music from iPod to computer.
"I see LOTS of files - but they all have funky names like XYZAV.mp3"
That's normal. When those files are back in iTunes they'll have the correct names.
Once the files are back to your computer (and only then), you should restore your iPod. It would appear that the hard drive has become corrupt and unreadable.

  • IPod synced to a different library

I've read many different posting on this matter, but none appear to resolve my problem.
I use multiple iPods on the same computer. My clever daughter plugged her nano in, and got the message 'not synced to the library'. She must have pressed the 'erase and sync' option, 'cos now, when I plug mine in, it is not synced to my library and furthermore, I do not see any option to allow me to do this. Erase and Sync in no good, because I will lose everthing that is currently on the Pod, and the Transfer option will only add purchased songs back into my daughter's library.
All the files are still on the hard disc, bit not in the library where I want them.
Does anyone have any bright ideas on how to link my iPod back to my library and not my daughters?
    Thanks

You can use a keyboard command to prevent your iPod auto-syncing with iTunes. While connecting the iPod to the computer on Windows hold down Control-Alt (iTunes 7). This will stop the iPod from auto-syncing with iTunes and the iPod will appear in the source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto sync and then you can let the keys go. This may take between 20 to 30 seconds depending on your computer.
Once you have your iPod appearing in the iTunes source list from you can change the update setting to manual and use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. In iTunes 7 Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button. Don't uncheck Sync Music it will be unchecked by default when you choose the manual setting: Managing content manually on iPod
Keep your iPod in manual mode until you have sorted out your iTunes library and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync again.

  • HT1386 I updated my daughters iPod Touch and now the music states is it now stored on iCloud and can be accessed on WiFi or cellular.  There is no music stored on the iPod and she listens to it outside of the home without WiFi.  I will not let me sync.

I updated my daughter iPod touch.   Now the music states that it is on iCloud and can be accessed using WiFi or cellular.   I need to move the music back on the iPod so that she can listen to it without WiFi.   I tried to Restore backup but still does not work.   I tried to sync, still does not work.

Is the music in your iTunes library?
    Why can't you sync?
You said "Now the music states that it is on iCloud and can be accessed using WiFi or cellular."
    where does it state that?
Just redownload them from iCloud to the computer and the iPod by:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store

  • Updating Track Info on iPod 160 When Manual Syncing

So I bought the 160 model this past weekend. Come to read there are so many issues with it but I'm gonna try to stick it out for an update.
Anyway, question regarding manual syncing. I have over 3000 tracks on iTunes that I am going thru, cataloging and changing their names. Digitizing all my vinyl. A lot easier to walk into a party and DJ with 2 folder size cd wallets instead of the usual 10 crates of records. Anyway, I want to know, if I am managing my music manually on my iPod, if I change the name of a track on iTunes, do I have to add it again to my ipod and delete the original version or will it recognize the change somehow and update the existing track?

if you have "manually manage my ipod" option checked, everytime you change anything to your tracks in itunes library, you have to drag and drop them back on your ipod, it will not update ipod cos you have it manually set ... it will also keep the original track on your ipod and create a new duplicate one .... what i do is go thru each track make all the changes i need and then clean my ipod totally then transfer back the tracks in library back on ipod.

  • Just synced and updated os for ipod touch 5th gen and have lost game data - restore won't get it back, is there anyway to retrieve?

Have new ipod touch and successfully transferred game data from old ipod touch, but today have updated to the new os (from 6.1.2 to 6.1.3) and now have lost game progress on several apps.
Have tried to restore the backup but it doesn't bring back the game data
Is there anything I can do to find this data or is it gone for good?

If restoring from backup did not work then there is nothing else you can do. Did you try both from iTunes backup and iCloud backup? If you restore from iTunes backup you have to have the apps in the iTunes library since synced media like apps and music are not included in the backup.

  • Hi at the moment my ipod is on manual sync mode. Is there any way of changing this to auto-sync without losing the music on my ipod or library? Possibly more importantly is there a way I can transfer the ratings from my ipod onto my i-tunes?

Hi at the moment my ipod is on manual sync mode. Is there any way of changing this to auto-sync without losing the music on my ipod or library? Possibly more importantly is there a way I can transfer the ratings from my ipod onto my i-tunes?
This is so I can delete music from my ipod knowing its rated on my i-tunes so I can then see later if I want to re-add it based on its rating
    Thanks

    Unfortunately there is not.

Not without the help of third party software such as this one:
