2.0.1 Wiped out Applications

Hello, all!
I recently upgraded to 2.0.1 because of all the crashes I got in Apps in 2.0.0. However, this wiped out a good number of my apps, and left another unable to startup. I lost about 10 apps (one of which was a pay app, the game Vay) on the update, and the one that crashes is a pay app (BeatMaker, which I started to get really into before it killed itself). These apps show up in my iTunes under Applications, and are authorized for my iPod Touch. All except BeatMaker were bought via the App Store on the iPod. "Re-buying" the free apps reinstalls them, but I don't want to have to spend the money on pay apps again.

I've had the same exact problems. I had bought over $100 of apps, and it seems as though those of us with a lot of apps are having major issues. I'm currently working on my 5th restore in 1.5 days, and if this restore doesn't work, I'm going to play street hockey with it.
As for "re-buying", go ahead and choose to buy the "already purchased" apps, it will eventually give you a dialog box that says "you've already purchased this app, press ok to download it again free".

  • Mac OS and Application Settings Wiped Out

    Hi folks,
I shut down my MBP earlier today and started it up this evening to find that all of my desktop settings, system settings, application settings, and desktop/dock icons are all gone and set to default. It's like I'm using an entirely new profile. I have checked to see if my home directory is renamed and it isn't. All of my normal icons are within <user>/Desktop. I have one application in particular called SofToken which is critical to me being able to VPN into work, and the settings for it are wiped out...the only way for me to fix that is to be physically connected to the corporate network which isn't an option right now. So for work purposes (which is what this laptop is for), I'm hosed.
I have tried a simple reboot. Tried repairing permissions (with a reboot). I don't have a time machine backup (yes, shame on me).
I've googled this extensively and have found a number of similar questions with no definitive answers. Surely someone knows what the deal is and how to fix it. I'm not a Mac OS wizard, as I'm a recent convert from a life long addiction to Windows.
I have not installed a program or an update for DAYS, so it should not be that.
Any assistance will be greatly appreciated!

I figured this out. Somehow the home directory for my account got changed to /. Not really sure how that happened, but once I changed it back to /Users/<username> all my settings came back. A note for anyone trying to figure out if this happened to you...right click on your blank desktop and click "Get Info". The location under "Where" will tell you where the Desktop folder is located on your hard drive. If it isn't /Users/<your_username> there is a good chance your account's home directory got changed. To fix, go into System Preferences>Accounts>Right Click your Account and go under Advanced Options to change the home directory. If the blank desktop is under /Users/<your_username> then your original home directory likely got renamed.
Once my settings came back, however, the Desktop was still blank. I had an empty Desktop folder in / from my messed up home directory, and I couldn't delete it through Finder. So a quick trip to terminal and a
    sudo su root
    cd /
    rm -r Desktop
then a logout and login and my Desktop was back to it's normal self.

  • Iphone4 would not restore Error -50. I have tried to restore and it restored it to the point that it created after 5.0 was installed. How can I get it an older restore point from my backups and restore it on another computer? The phone has been wiped out.

Iphone would not restore---- Error -50. I have tried to restore, and it restored it to the new point that it created after 5.0 was installed. How can I get it an older restore point from my backups and restore it on another computer? The phone has been wiped out. I can see earlier backups in my C:\Documents and Settings\user\Application Data\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup folder. There are four subfolders in this address. I need my contacts, photos, and messages back. I know this is a common error but I can not figure it out. I have ran the other troublshoot items in the error steps for 13 and 14 like apple says. Is there a way to call apple and get a step by step of how to restore from another restore point? Does anybody have a solution????

It tells you to go to Error 13 and 14 if you receive error (-50).
Here is what I have tried...
Error 13 and 14: These errors are typically resolved by performing one or more of the steps listed below:
Perform USB isolation troubleshooting, including trying a different USB port directly on the computer. See the advanced steps below for USB troubleshooting. I have moved it around to different ports.
Put a USB 2.0 hub between the device and the computer. Didn't change anything.
    Try a different USB 30-pin dock-connector cable.
Eliminate third-party security software conflicts. Removed all virus protection and firewall.
There may be third-party software installed that modifies your default packet size in Windows by inserting one or more TcpWindowSize entries into your registry. Your default packet size being set incorrectly can cause this error. Contact the manufacturer of the software that installed the packet-size modification for assistance. Or, follow this article by Microsoft: How to reset Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) to reset the packet size back to the default for Windows.Used the Microsoft fix it.
Connect your computer directly to your Internet source, bypassing any routers, hubs, or switches. You may need to restart your computer and modem to get online. Doesn't matter.
Try to restore from another known-good computer and network. I do not know how to do this or how to find the correct/full/complete restore point. There should be more information for this.

  • HT1688 Why does when they upgrade my phone they turn on Icloud stuff I did not have and wiped out my phone contacts, but after it did that it took another back up and I could not get my contacts from backup unless I go back sept , why not incremental back

recent upgrade I lost all my contacts, I only had icloud for find my phone. My son backs his contacts up to my id, so when the upgrade happen it wipped out my contacts. I had been doing backups on my computer when I plug it in. But the problem is that it overlays the previous backup and after the upgrade it wiped out my phone contacts. So now I lost them and can not recover them. You need a more robust backup for IPhone.... I can not use the cloud because of my work will not let me. I have confidential information or access to it on my phone. I do not like each time I upgrade I lose my contacts and then I can't recover them because the backup runs again and overlays it. Should be a way to get increamental backups at point and time and not overlay everything. So frustrating with my upgrades and constantly losing my contacts. Very insufficent.

I think you can solve your problems by removing your AppleID email address from BOTH the Messages setting on your iPhone and the iMessages settings on your Mac.
    On iPhone:
    Settings > Messages > iMessage > Dissabled
Settings > Messages > Send & Receive > touch the "(i)" < touch "Remove This Email"
    On Mac:
    Open "Messages" application
    Click "Messages menu > Preferences
    Click "Accounts"
    Select your AppleID account
Under the "You can be reached for messages at" settings, uncheck your AppleID email address and your phone number
Then uncheck the "Enable this account" setting
And lastly, ask all of your friends with iPhones to delete all iMessage conversations (blue bubbles) in their entirety.
To test, send a friend a new text using their phone number (not their email address) and watch the color of the bubble.  If it's green then you are using SMS.

  • I had this guy load a not completed 10.4 on my pwr macG4. I found my cd of 10.4 and loaded onto the one that he had. Wiping out everything that I had on my 10.4. Now I loaded a update mac OS Z 10.4.1

I had made a mistake & trusted this geek, & did not know that he had gotten the 10.4 from someone else's mac. I did find my CD with 10.4 and reloaded it not realizing it that I had wiped out all of my downloads from apple. That included all the security's, upgraded 10.4.11, safari 4.1.2, quicktime Version 7.6.4. Now when I go into the internet SAFARI gives me a lot of trouble and will cop out of things. Nothing works. I cannot download Adobe Flash Player. I will call Adobe for this problem. But I do not have a PDF (that I learned that Adobe doesn't support).
I hope  that someone can help me.

Is this question truly answered?  You have marked it as such, so now people looking to assist others are unlikely to open the topic.  Also realize that you asked it in the middle of the night in the USA where many (but not all) people who can help you are asleep.  Then you also asked it at a time of year when many people are away from their computers and doing holiday activities.  Be patient.
We need to know more about your particular computer model. Go to the Apple in the upper left corner > About This Mac > More, then copy and paste the main information there but omitting the serial number.
The guy getting 10.4 from another Mac actually doesn't matter.  It's either a retail version disc in which case it will install on any G4, or it is a machine specific disc in which case it will refuse to do anything to your computer.  Of course installing will revert the computer to the original software versions that were on hte installer disc, so you ned to update those.  Most can be downloaded directly from Apple. Here's my long post on updating:
    *Updating*
Certain steps appear to minimize the risk of an update producing problems.
Number one is to make sure you have a bootable clone backup of your computer in case you do need to back out of it again.  This is the only guaranteed way of not having to worry about the results of an update.
Some like to boot from their installer discs or an external backup and verify (and if necessary repair) their internal drives as well as drive permissions. This is done with Disk Utility. You can verify a drive while booted from the same drive but sometimes this produces spurious errors. Repairing a drive (if necessary) has to be done while booted from another disk.

    [Disk Utility's Repair Disk Permissions|http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25751]
You can also go to the step of booting into safe mode to do the install.

[Safe Boot takes longer than normal startup|http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107394]
I like to download the update onto my computer and install it from there rather than let Software Update do it. I know a few people who had problems with doing the update via software updater found a manual install to work.
    Repair permissions again afterward.
It helps to only install one update at a time and to run the computer for a while to make sure it is behaving well.
The more cautious even like to unplug third party peripherals (see [comment by BDaqua|http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=9040746#9040746]).
Almost all of the above steps (except backup) have been questioned (e.g., [Permissions repair|http://www.macworld.com/article/52220-3/2006/08/repairpermissions.html]) as to necessity. Probably many people have done successful updates without doing them. I say they can't hurt, they can very likely do good (especially if your computer isn't regularly maintained), so why not do them to be safe?

You will have a lot of updates to do, so do them one by one, testing in between.  Start with "Combo" 10.4.11 updater PowerPC-based Macs - http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosx10411comboupdateppc.html
Flash will be the messiest because, as you have observed, Adobe does not make it easy and it is also the most finicky.
    *Flash Player for PPC Macs*
Adobe's last release of Flash Player for PPC Macs was in November, 2010 with release 10.1.102.64 Subsequent releases are for Intel based Macs only.
To check your installed version of FlashPlayer - http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about
    To update you should download:
Flash uninstaller: [http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/865/cpsid_86551.html#prob1=uninst,os=m10.6,] Make sure you get the right one.
Flash installer 10.1.102.64 [http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/get/flashplayer/installers/archive/fp_10.1.102. 64_and_9.0.289.0_archive.zip]  Open the archive to reveal yet more archives and multiple files. Select: flashplayer10_1r102_64_ub_mac.dmg
    To install:
    1) Run Disk Utility and verify your hard drive.  If the hard drive reports errors then it will need repairing first (another topic).  If it verifies, run Disk Utility's repair permissions.
    2) Back up your hard drive, ideally to a bootable clone. A bootable clone will allow you to restore your hard drive to its original state should something go wrong.
    3) Quit all applications to ensure nothing is actively using Flash. You can even do the next step while booted to Safe Mode to make sure.
[Mac OS X: Starting up in Safe Mode|http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107393]
[What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode? (Mac OS X)|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1564]
[Safe Boot takes longer than normal startup|http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107394]
    4) Run the uninstaller application. Adobe says, "Adobe recommends that you restart your computer before you install a different version of the player."
    5) Run the installer application from the .dmg file you got from the second download.
    6) Use Disk Utility to repair permissions on your computer. this is important when installing anything from Adobe.
    7) Restart your computer.
    Notes:
Adobe installs things all over your computer. Simply dragging a file or two to the trash won't ensure you have uninstalled all old file components.

  • Planning Refresh wiping out access security

    Hi,
We are facing issues with access secuirty getting wiped out from planning applications
We need assistance in researching what is causing the read/write access security to get wiped out from planning applications. Twice now in the last month this security has been eliminated and had to be manually reloaded.
This is how the refresh script looks like, we perform refresh on daily basis. Refresh completes with no issues.
    . /opt/hyperion/Planning/bin/CubeRefresh.sh /A:appname /U:$UID /P:$PWD /R /D /FS
    CubeRefresh.sh look like this
    PLN_JAR_PATH=/opt/hyperion/Planning/bin
    export PLN_JAR_PATH
    . "${PLN_JAR_PATH}/setHPenv.sh"
    "${HS_JAVA_HOME}/bin/java" -classpath ${CLASSPATH} com.hyperion.planning.HspCubeRefreshCmd $1 $2 $3 $4 $5 $6 $7
Could someone please assist on this? what could be the possible root cause?

I take it is version 11.1.1.x then maybe it relates to the following Oracle support doc - "Hyperion Planning Security Disappears After Refreshing Security (Doc ID 1378363.1)"
    Cheers

  • Have been using your products since 1984. Very sorry I upgraded to Mountain Lion. Time consuming AND wiped out 2007 Quicken. I guess it would have been too much trouble to have red flagged this situation ahead of time. Out of business, literally.

Have been using your products since 1984. Very sorry I upgraded to Mountain Lion. Wiped out all my old applications. Out of business until I get this fixxed. Can I go back to previous operating system? Time Machine?

Downgrade Lion/Mountain Lion to Snow Leopard
    1.  Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Quit DU and return to the installer. Install Snow Leopard.
This will erase the whole drive so be sure to backup your files if you don't have a backup already. If you have performed a TM backup using Lion be aware that you cannot restore from that backup in Snow Leopard (see below.) I suggest you make a separate backup using Carbon Copy Cloner 3.4.1.
If you have Snow Leopard Time Machine backups, do a full system restore per #14 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.  If you have subsequent backups from Lion, you can restore newer items selectively, via the "Star Wars" display, per #15 there, but be careful; some Snow Leopard apps may not work with the Lion files.
    In the future:
    Before upgrading consider:
Don't upgrade if you are in the midst of important work. Wait until you have finished.
If you are having problems with your computer get them sorted out before you upgrade.
Verify that any mission critical software will be compatible with the upgrade.

  • How to stop mail from recovering the same message over and over again to the extent that it has wiped out all start up disk memory?

How to stop mail from recovering the same message over and over again to the extent that it has wiped out all start up disk memory?

You need to find and delete (move to the Trash) the offline mail cache (.offline cache.) It's a hidden folder (files and folders with a preceding dot are hidden) inside the Mail folder (inside IMAP) in your user library. Since it's hidden, in order to see it run the following command in Terminal in Applications>Utilities. Hit return/enter once you have pasted in the command.
defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles -bool true ; killall Finder
To reverse this and hide all those hidden files and folders again
defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles -bool false ; killall Finder
Leave hidden files/folders enabled until you finish emptying the Trash so you know it's gone.

  • Palm Treo 650 Sync wiped out my address book--HELP!!

Got a replacement Treo 650; went to do my first hard sync. Not only did calendar not port over, but it completely wiped out my entire address book (except for two records created yesterday). Freaked out!! All my iSync settings are the same as previous and have always worked. What to do? Thankfully I still have my old Treo 650 with address book intact, but no one seems able to tell me how to reverse port that address book to my MacBook Pro.
    Pul-eeze someone help me!

This was likely caused by introducing an 'empty' Treo into your synchronization framework with the same HotSync name and without having reset the framework before doing so. The framework properly recognized the new devices as the old—but now empty—device, and removed all of the records from iCal and the Address Book as it should have.
Simply backing up both databases using the built in facility to do so, or assigning a new HotSync name to the replacement device would have either allowed you to immediately recover from this unforeseen consequence, or to have avoided it entirely.
Before you do anything else, you should read this document so that you understand how the synchronization framework operates.
Then, reset the framework by launching iSync, opening the Preferences… pane, and pressing the Reset Sync History… button. This will leave your sync clients registered and your data—such as it is at this point—intact, and set the truth database to appear as if you have never synchronized at all. When you attach your identically named original device, be sure that you choose to Merge data with your computer and not to Replace the data on it.
Once you have merged the data, open iCal and the Address Book and make any changes that you wish to to your data, then pause to back each database up using the built-in option in each application to do so. Synchronize once again, and you changes will not only have been backed up, but distributed across your synchronization pool.

  • All data in iTunes, iPhoto, Mail, iCal, iMovie, etc has been wiped out.

All of the pictures, music, emails, etc has been wiped out in all of our applications. The only thing that wasn't wiped out was our documents. When you click on the applications it goes to what it looks like when you are first setting up your computer. After that, everything is gone. The only thing different we have done with our computer was update Safari. Any idea what happened?

Bee may be onto something. Losing the home folder has been known to happen spontaneously. These are directions if this has been done deliberately, but which you might want to use to troubleshoot your situation. It may be worth a try.

  • Last iPhone sync wiped out Address Book

I just performed a sync between my iPhone and my MacBook Pro after having made extensive changes to the Contacts list on the iPhone. After the sync, my Address Book is completely empty, and my contacts list is gone from the phone. I tried to revert to an Address Book backup, but the computer can't find the file (and neither can I). Needless to say, I'm in a bit of a panic, and I'd appreciate any help I can get.
    Thanks.

If you can't find a backup there's not much you can do at this time. If you were on 10.5 and had enabled Time Machine you would have a whole history of backups. I have no idea why your contacts were wiped out, but without a backup there isn't any way of recovery that I can think of. Have you looked where your Address Book library belongs? It should be in Library/Application Support/Address Book.

  • Phone wiped out date

    hi guys,
i recently updated my torch software, though i never knew you had to back-up your phone before doing so, now all of my contacts and information has been wiped out. is there a way for me to get it back?
i have synced it before as i thought it would have backed it up.
    help please

Hi and Welcome to the Forums!
Synchronizing (with, for example, Outlook) and backing up are two separate functions. The backup is useful for more quickly restoring your data to your BB after some event (e.g., upgrade). In fact, the upgrade process, depending on how you performed it, should have taken a backup on your PC (if you did the update via your PC). If so, then search your hard drive for files with IPD extension (*.IPD). If you find any, inspect the date/time of the files...the one created around the date/time you were doing the update would be useful as the source of restore:
KB23680How to back up and restore BlackBerry smartphone data using BlackBerry Desktop Software 6.0
Otherwise, if you are synchronizing with a desktop application (e.g., Outlook), you can configure that anew and your data will be pushed back onto your BB:

  • Sync wiped out my contact info...need recovery help

I just realized that my last sync which occurred a few days ago seemed to wipe out a ton of my address book data (stuff like contact photos and notes).
I suspect it's because it replaced my Address Book contacts with my Entourage/Exchange contacts which doesn't contain those bits of info. It used to work the other way around, where I maintained the "master" in address book, but now it's all gone and I'm ******.
I did check /Library/Application Support/AddressBook/AddressBook.data.previous, but it contains the same missing info so perhaps it got wiped out prior to my last sync. Do any other "previous" versions get stored anywhere?
Hopefully someone can help...this *****!! I've lost a ton of data and am looking for ways to get it back

ARRRGGG!!!! All my birthday data is wiped out too. Great. I don't have this info stored anywhere else. How could this happen?

  • Help -Numbers update wiped out spreadsheets/templates

MacBook Pro  OSx 10.8.5    Update of iWorks 09 - Numbers wiped out all my templates/spreadsheets.
The only ones shown are apples......where are mine?  Need that data.  Does anyone know where it went?
Or more importantly, how do I get them back?
    Help Please.  Thank you
If Im in the wrong place, I'm sorry. Not sure what the difference is.  Appleworks vs iWorks
I thought Appleworks name was changed to iWorks. Used Appleworks for years but when bought this
computer, had to buy new  "works" because other was so old.     ??

    Barry,
    Thank you for your response.
I haven't upgraded to Mavericks. Reading forums, it seems there are a lot of
problems people are having and features that have changed that aren't popular
    with long time "Macs".
I was having problems with Java after updating to Safari 6.1, and eventually,
uninstalled and reinstalled OSX 10.8.5 to get back to Safari  6.0.5. I'm not
positive where I got the upgrade from but if I recall correctly, Software Update
said I needed to update.....so I did. However, I don't remember if it was before
or after reinstalling my OS. ?? If it was before, my templates wouldn't have still
been in the trash because I usually empty it daily.
My "Numbers" is v  2.3. It looks completely different than it did the last time I'd
used it. The "Pages" in my iWorks '09  folder is v 4.3  and Keynote is v 5.3.
If that helps you  figure out where it came from and why things disappeared.
I did find my templates, but not where you said they'd be.  Fortunately, after
reinstalling OS 10.8.5, I found a lot of files in my trash. Not knowing what they
all were, little voices were warning me, so I didn't empty it -- just in case
something was there that shouldn't be. Too many problems lately to trust
anything. Last night I went thru all those files. Most were things I couldn't
understand when I attempted to open them. However, I did find a "Numbers"
Folder. WIthin it was a  "Templates" folder and within that was another..
"My Templates". When removed that from the trash, those opened and were
what I'd lost -- or would have if I'd just emptied my trash.
I also found among those files:
A "Calendar" folder that had everything that was on my Calendar but had
    also disappeared;
A "Safari" folder that had all my bookmarks, et el.
A couple "Turbox Tax" folders for years past. I just pulled them out but haven't
tried to open everything to see what's there. I didn't think any of my Turbo Tax
    should have been removed.
A "Mail" folder with, among other things, another folder within it called "V2".
Inside that were several other folders. One contained a lot of mail I'd downloaded
but hadn't moved out of "Mail" in a folder called "POP-(old email address)".
Also were Logs, Keychains, Crash reports and something called
    "Saved Application State".
I tried to find the same folders in my present "Library". If I was able to find them,
they didn't have my old data.  Afraid to delete the above Folders, I saved them.
I may not be able to get everything back to where it was, but at least I'll have it.
When I uninstalled and reinstalled OSX 10.8.5,  it took over 12 hrs!
I couldn't believe it was actually taking that long. I don't know if that's normal or not.
I'd found the instructions for doing this in a blog......somewhere.  Again, having the
problem with Java not working or being recognized as being present, and after days
going thru Apple's Community forums, everything I could find on Java's website
& Pogo's website, I finallyGoogled it. I found lots of other people were having the
same, or different problems since upgrading to Safari 6.1.  Someone had posted
instructions on how to go about getting Safari 6.0.5 back. Starting up while holding
the "Command" and "R" keys, selecting to reinstall the OS and being taken to
the Apple App Store to download from there. One person did say it took a long time
but I had no idea their "long time" was going to be 12 hours!
Unfortunately, I'd just received Time Capsule but hadn't set it up and copied my
entire System and everything on it yet -- so it wasn't properly backed up.
The external drive I'd used before, rewrote files every time I backed up.
I was losing things so I quit using it.
I'd never experienced anything like this before and don't know if this was
suppose to happen or not after using the "Command" & "R" keys starting up.
No one called it a "clean system install" so I wasn't expecting it. Infact, they
only said to be sure to back-up your bookmarks, passwords & contacts. I'd
reset Safari, trying  to solve the Java problem, so those had already been
wiped out-- or so I thought. Judging just from the number of Bookmarks found
in the trash, I think they may all be there.
I guess the bottomline here is.......don't empty your "Trash" after upgrading
anything until you know things aren't being trashed that you want.
If this wasn't suppose to happen, it's a bug that needs to fixed.
    Thanks again.

  • Can i recover photo files lost when i wiped out my hard-drive and  reinstalled mac os x?

Can i recover photo files lost when i wiped out my hard-drive and  reinstalled mac os x?  I know that when a computer is wiped cleaned that the info is still on the hard drive, how do I access it?  Can I pay someone to access it?  Long story short, everything was saved to my external hard drive except my photos, by mistake of course.

You have to stop using the drive immediately.  Completely stop.  Do not boot the computer from the drive.
File recovery software: Try using an application such as Data Rescue 3 - http://www.prosofteng.com/products/data_rescue.php or FileSalvage - http://subrosasoft.com, or one of the ones listed in the (old) link below. Some have free trial versions that let you see if the software will help before you decide to buy. You will also need a second hard drive equal to or larger in size than your first drive as a destination drive for recovered files.
    http://data-recovery-software-review.toptenreviews.com/mac-recovery-software
It is critical that you do not use the computer or even turn it on until you have rescued your files. Files only have the directory reference to them removed when you empty the trash or otherwise delete them from a computer (unless you use secure erase, in which case they are gone forever or can only be potentially be recovered by very expensive means) and are still present on the computer. However, their space is marked as available to any other file creation done on the computer (even done by you booting the computer) and there is risk that your files will be overwritten by the computer.
Even if the above works, do not expect the results to be pretty or even 100% successful.  Files will often lose their names and you will have to re-name them one by one.
