2.02 update broke my iphone. please help.
ok, so I just went to update my iphone like normal, and it asked me to do the new software update, which I did. The first time, it said my software was corrupt and that it could not be completed. It also told me to unplug it and try it again. After an hour, (this is the 2nd time) it finally finished; only it told me that the phone could not be updated because of an error. Then the phone showed a picture of itunes and the usb port, telling me to connect to itunes. Upon doing so, I was told my phone was in recovery mode and needed a full restore to work again. So I tried to restore it, and now for the past 3 attempts, it will not restore, it just keeps saying "this iphone could not be restored" yet the phone keeps telling me to plug it back into itunes.. please help!!
I had major crashing on my apps. All of them. Every few days. I tried everything I could think of; at my wits end, I called Apple support.
Here is my fix (I was still using 2.0.1 when I did the fix); didn't post for 4 days, just to make sure.
I was told to restore my iphone and use the new phone option. I did this and then loaded up some apps; All went well. I added some more apps=50 so far out of the 89 I use. All is well. I have had no issues after updating to 2.0.2.
The only real problem I have is with some apps crashing; but not crashing all apps. And connection problem with one app. I'm sure
they will fix this, so until then, I reboot my iphone or delete the bad app and reload if I have to.
Oh, one more thing; before you sync your iphone, make sure you have authorized you computer in itunes; have heard this may cause apps to crash because of DRM issues?
When the iphone works it's the best; when it doesn't it really gets you frustrated. Jon

Since an iPhone 3G cannot be updated past iOS 4.2.1...the end of the line for that model iPhone...you can't do what you want, so there's nothing to be fearful of.

Downgrading to a previous version of iOS is not supported.
Sounds like your iPhone was hacked/modified/jailbroken to work
with wireless carrier other than the one it was purchased from. The
update has relocked it to the original carrier. Contact the original
carrier to see if they offer unlocking and if you qualify - only the
carrier to which the iPhone is locked can unlock it.
What does it say when you look at Settings=>General=>Carrier?
Be advised that the previous modifications to change from original carrier
to your local Carrier may have rendered the iPhone unable to be
officially unlocked. -

Your Airport device may be in Bridge Mode.
Airport Utility 6:
Open Airport Utility, select the Airport Express and click Edit. Navigate to the Network tab and change Router Mode to DHCP and NAT. Then click Update on the bottom right.

Open Airport Utility and click Manual Setup. Navigate to the Internet icon and change Connection Sharing to Share a Public IP Address. Then click Update on the bottom right. -

Where did you get the phone? If it was previously locked to a carrier and was hacked/jailbroken to use it on a different carrier, updating the phone has re-locked it to the original carrier. ONLY the carrier it is locked to can authorize and unlock.

I am not aware of any method around the restriction once
