2.0GHZ Single or 1.8GHz Duet???

Hey Guys!
I just wanted to ask if it's better to buy the 1.8GHz Sonnet Duet CPU Upgrade, which is a 7447A, or the NewerTech 2.0GHz single which is a 7448 based one...?
+1.8 Dual -> http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Sonnet%20Technology/SG4D1800L/+
+2.0 Single -> http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Newer%20Technology/MAXG48S2000/+
Does anyone know if the difference between those two upgrades is as big as it's worth to pay 100 bucks more for the dual?? or is there a better upgrade for max. same the money as the sonnet duet (can be a little more but not much)??
I'm a little confused because of the different processors (7447A/7448). Is the 7448 much faster than the 7447?
thanks for your help (i hope you do)
gis

Welcome to the Discussions.
From what I have read, the 7448 is between 10% and 40% faster than a 7447 of the same clock speed, depending on the application, (video editing, Photoshop, etc.).
OWC used to have benchmarks for different processor upgrades.
If I remember correctly, the dual 7448 had a big performance increase over the single, but only in applications that were "multiprocessor aware".

  • Power Mac G5 1.8GHz won't recognize discs

After nine years, I shelved my workhorse G5 (single processer, 1.8GHz, 4GB RAM, 2x1TB internal drives, eSATA and extra ethernet PCI cards, OS X Server 10.4.11) not becuase it wasn't working well--it was--but because the not-for-profit I work with switched to a cloud-based solution, which makes a huge amount of sense.
After watching it sit in the corner for a month, I decided to put it up on Ebay. And of course, didn't think to test it until it was already posted. I mean, come on! It worked fine last month, right?
    Oops.
It starts up. The monitor goes grey, and then I get the flashing question mark. (Occasionally I get a circle with a line through it, which is new to me.)
It doesn't recognize the internal system drive. It doesn't recognize an external mirrored drive, whether connected to FW400, FW800 or eSATA. It doesn't recognize ANY INSTALL DISK in the optical drive. The question mark flashes on. When I hold down the option key at startup, the wheel spins merrily for a while, then stops, showing just the right arrow and the reload arrow.
It DOES start in target mode; I can boot another computer off of the internal system drive (or the backup, for that matter). So the drives are fine.
Here're the things I've done, in no particular order:
I zapped the PRAM. (Haven't replaced the battery--3.6 volt half-AAs aren't easy to find!)
    I reset the PMU.
I tried to enter safe mode by holding down the shift key. Nope.
    I tried--mostly unsuccessfully--to enter single user mode.
I managed (after much trying) to get into single user mode, and zapped the NVRAM. Should have checked the disks before rebooting, because I haven't been able to get back into single user mode again.
I took out/moved around the PCI cards.
I took out/moved around the eight DIMMs.
I emptied everything out and cleaned it as much as I could.
I moved the system drive to the other bay.
I removed the system drive and tried to boot from the external and the DVD.
    Nothing has worked.
My fear is that the computer has, in the last month, suffered a failure of either the video card or (shudder) the logic board. Or maybe the firmware has gotten corrupted somehow, since the startup sequence seems to be weird. If it's that, however, I can't figure out how to reset it, since I can't seem to get the computer to start in single user mode.
    HELP!

Half height AA PRAM batteries can be found at Radio Shack. The half height AA battery is purple and made by a company called Tandrian. They are more expensive from the Shack.
Here's another online source for the PRAM battery that is much cheaper.

  • Motu Ultralight or Apogee Duet?

About to buy one of those - biggest question is which one is better? Studio use until I'll be able to afford a bigger interface again (like the idea of the Apogee Ensemble).
Any people using one of these?

Well, the duet has a breakout cable, 2 mic inputs, 2 instrument inputs, 1 stereo monitor out, and 1 headphone in .............. The single knob in the duet controls the monitor out and the headphone out volume at the same time..... and that really ***** ! so I connect the monitor out in the duet to the input in the monitor station, and I connect all my headphones and monitors in the monitor station with individual volumen setting on each...
But I love my Duet, way better than my previous mbox 2 or Digi 002 !

  • New imac VS. 4 year old G5???

Hello. I currently have a single processor 1.8ghz Power Mac G5. It is about 4 years old and running a little funny lately (im sure nothing yet another install and restore cant fix). I was looking at the specifications for the new imacs and noticed that the specs for the imacs seem to be better than the specs on my 4 year old G5. For some reason, I've always had the experience that laptops, imacs, anything small, runs slower than my desktop. Is there anything other than the normal specifications that apple lists on the site that might make the imac actually slower than my G5? For example, on paper, the imac looks like it would by far be a better computer, but I'm not sure if there is anything that isn't listed here that would affect the performance.
    imac specs:
    - 2.0GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    - 1GB memory
    - 250GB hard drive
    - 8x double-layer SuperDrive
    - ATI Radeon HD 2400 XT with 128MB memory
Here's the "hardware overview" of my computer in the apple system profiler
    Machine Name: Power Mac G5
    Machine Model: PowerMac7,2
    CPU Type: PowerPC 970 (2.2)
    Number Of CPUs: 1
    CPU Speed: 1.8 GHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 512 KB
    Memory: 2 GB
    Bus Speed: 900 MHz
    Boot ROM Version: 5.1.4f0
    Serial Number: XB33617RNVR
Anyone have any thoughts? By the way, I do use the computer for some graphics heavy work (I am a graphic designer and sometimes have large photoshop + illustrator files). I was in the market to purchase a new monitor, which is what got me started questioning the imac. I was probably going to get the 20" apple display, and when I saw that the imac starts at $1199 and the monitor would have been $599, I thought I should look into getting the imac since the monitor is very similar to the one I want. I can't afford a mac pro right now either. Any feedback would be GREATLY appreciated! Thanks so much in advance for your time.
    Regards,

    Hi Dayna Reilly-
I am going to throw in the same basic thoughts as the others.
IMHO the iMac tops out as a +high-end consumer+ machine. It gives you the tools out of the box to get started doing some pretty cool things and to do them fairly well. It also gives one room to grow and improve upon those skills by giving you the ability to run some higher-end applications to get a taste of what you can do with a Mac.
For reasons well described by the others and based on the description of your work, you would soon push an iMac to it's limits. If you generate any revenue at all by using your computer you really should consider investing a little more in a Mac Pro. Your payback will be short-term as the time savings to your workflow alone will be significant.
No matter what Mac you get, do not forget to add in the cost of upgrading your professional applications such as Photoshop.
    Luck-

  • Upgrade power mac g5 or buy imac/mac pro

I have a single cpu 1.8ghz g5. If i upgrade to a 128meg video card will it play world of warcraft at a minumum of between 30-40frames per second? or should i save up for an intel pci-e imac or a mac pro? Mind you im coming to macs from a dual core gaming rig that runs wow between 90-120fps depending on server load. If the g5 can handle it, then ill grab a mac mini, if not then save up money to get either an imac or a mac pro Any help would be greatly appreciated

Why not look at hardware sites and see just what can be done today on a PC using P55 or X58 and Core i5/i7 and graphics cards coming out?
Always going to be limited in choice and pay an $100 'tax' for Mac compatible.
The Mac Pro makes running OS X and Windows easy though, and there is $1999 in Apple Store Specials for a 2008 single proc quad-core 2.8, nice and you can do quite well. Which is about what it cost to do a custom build for my 920.

  • What's wrong with Mac G5 1.8 Machine?

I've searched the net, I've searched the forum with the whole fan noise issues and seen all possible solutions but none has worked for me.
I bought a used mac a while ago and now that I bought some PNY memory (2) 512MB chips that are designed specifically for my model and bought a Seagate 250MB SATA Drive for my second drive. Everything works fine, the system profiler detects everything.
However, everytime I install something or try to use a program the fans start spinning crazy and then it goes into sleep mode. I have to hit the ESC button a few times so the machine can wake back up.
I followed the suggestions on the net and on the forums about the energy saver and sliding the knobs to never. I put the Processor Performance to Highest. Everything else unchecked.
I downloaded that Temperature Monitor program from the Bresink site and what it tells me is the following:
    CPU Temperature: 70.8C
    Drive Bay: 25.5C
    Smart Disk Maxtor: 47.0C
    Smart Disk ST: 42.0C
I checked the Console under the system log for everytime this machine shuts off and it states:
    IOSMUPwrController:: OverTemp Notification
Power Management received emergency overtemp signal. Going to sleep.
I did a search on the forums and google/yahoo for IOSMUPwrController and nothing appears for that keyword.
I took out the new PNY memory and it did the same thing so it's not my memory.
All I have in the G5 is a new Geethree Stealth Port I just put in for my Midi Timepiece.
I also put in from my previous G4 Quicksilver machine my Sonnet Area Extreme PCI Wireless network card.
Any other suggestions? I did that reset thing I had to do in terminal mode and that didn't do anything either.
I'm wondering if I have to replace the fans on the power supply because that noise reminds me of bad fans on a PC.
Saddest thing is that my PC is so 5 times quieter than my G5. Sad!
I don't have applecare or warrenty.
This is a G5 single processor 1.8Ghz the one that I can only max the memory to 4 GIGS not 8 GIGS. I think they state it's a late 2004 model.

I give up, I'm going to take a bat to this machine. I've had it. I have never seen a computer ever do this before not even a windows machine when it's fans are are about to expire.
Anyhow here's the latest logs from system console.

  • G4 shuts down when trying to sleep or restart

    Hello,
I've looked around on the forums but can't find the same problem as mine. When I try putting my G4 to sleep, it powers off right away. Same thing when trying to restart, it just shuts down. If it hasn't been on too long, I can press the power button and it will start. If it has been on a while, I have to wait 15 minutes or so until the power button will work. I tried replacing the PRAM battery and resetting the PRAM.
I'm running 10.4.11. Gigabit ethernet G4 running a single Sonnet 1.8Ghz, with 1.5GB RAM. Boot ROM 4.2.8f1. I have two hard drives, one 120GB and one 160GB. Haven't changed any hardware recently.
Is my power supply going bad? I replaced it about 3 1/2 years ago.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Boot in Safe Mode. See What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode? (Mac OS X)

I have the same problem and have been following the progress with interest
I reduced Adobe to 6.17 but was loath to reduce Flash from 10.1 because of the risk of access
Reduced FF to 2 as well which helped initially but then the crashes because non-stop - as soon as it reloaded it crashed again. I had already removed anything from my program list that I didn't use very often and that could potentially interfere with FF.
Even threw eBay Turbolister overboard as I have had trouble with that in the past!
None of this frantic jettisoning helped one whit, and now the PC is crashing even without FF being running! Very disturbing
It runs fine in safe mode so I think I can discount a hardware problem
Was definitely FF to start as got the usuas FF error messages.
Now FF seems to have been erased so?

  • Need help playing .mpg files

Just recently my computer has stopped playing .mpg files with sound, all I get is the video. iTunes, Quicktime and the Internet all will not play them with sound. Youtube.com does play movie files with sound so I'm assuming they aren't .mpg files.
This problem just started happening recently and I have no idea what I did. .Mov files do play with sound.
    Thanks for any help.

The following steps solved my problem similar to yours.
    1. Open Audio MIDI Setup (/Applications/Utilities/), then check the Audio Output setting.
    2. Change the Audio Output setting to 44100.0 Hz.
    3. Quit Audio MIDI Setup.
For more detail, read this article.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300832
My output setting looked like 44100.0 Hz when I first opened Audio MIDI Setup. I changed it to 96000.0 Hz first and changed it back to 44100.0 Hz just to make sure the setting will be in effect. It worked.

  • Palm IIIc - Trying to sync with Entourage on a G5 Tower

I am certain this issue has probably been ansewered in the past, but I would like to know the process I must follow in order to sync my Palm IIIc with my Entourage contact list.
Also, I would like to know how to send programs down the line to this device.
I tried to use the instructions I was directed to by Palm's web site. But, I keep getting the following dialog box:
    Application Launch Failure
The application "HotSync Manager" could not be launched because of a shared library error: "4<HotSync Manager><HotSync Manager><HotSyncLib.PPC>"
I used to use this device with my old G3 iMac. I bought the USB kit so I could use it then and it worked like a champ. It has not been used in a few years. I took it out the other day and thought I would use it again. But, this problem has me perplexed.
I am running Tiger (OS X ver. 10.4.3) on my G5 (single CPU 1.8GHz "late 2004") with 1.25 GB of RAM.
I probably need to update the OS version on the Palm IIIc. But, until I can get the communications working, that is academic.
If someone who has lots of experience with syncing devices like this could provide me with a sequence of events I must follow in order to make this work, I would really appreciate it.
Like I said earlier, I would like to be able to sync my Entourage contact list and appointment schedule with this device. Also, I would like to be able to download Palm software from my G5 to the handheld.
    Thanks!

    I had Entourage configured incorrectly.

  • New MacBook seems slower than it should be

I have had my new 2Ghz Core 2 with 2GB of ram for about a month or so now and I have to say I have not been that impressed with the speed of the machine. It boots, and shuts down like a blaze and once applications have been opened and closed once they too open and close like a blaze. With that said, applications just seem to take longer to open that first time than they do on my old PC with a single core 1.8Ghz Athlon.
Now this is my first mac so is this just me?
    Help

    From http://neowiki.sixthcrusade.com/index.php/NeoOfficeandAqua :
    "So...is NeoOffice written in Java?
    No.
NeoOffice is a Mac OS X native version of OpenOffice.org that uses small amounts of Java code for graphics drawing and configuration.
OpenOffice.org is written primarily in platform-agnostic C++. However, NeoOffice takes advantage of Mac OS X's advanced Java integration to tap into the Mac OS X look-and-feel. In other words, the little bits of Java in NeoOffice primarily have to do with operations that affect how the application appears to the user. The "guts" of the office suite are written in C++. (The code that makes up NeoOffice is 99% OpenOffice.org code shared among all OpenOffice.org platforms and 1% Mac OS X-specific code in Java, C++, C, and Objective-C.)"

  • Is FCE (or FCP) multi-threaded?

I'm still trying to decide on what new (probably used) computer I need and just did some reading on multi-processors. The articles I read said that, unless you need to use more than one application simultaneously, multi-processors are only of benefit if the application you are using was specifically designed to do more than one thing at a time. Yes, I use photoshop and other programs sometimes at the same time as FCE, but I don't have to. So...is FCE and/or Final Cut Pro multi-threaded to do more than one thing at the same time?
And I thank all of you who responded to my question as to whether a dual 1.8 was enough. I'm now thinking about a 2.3-2.6 dual g5.

    Hello Fay,
OSX fully supports multiprocessors & multithreading. The operating system takes care of assigning tasks to the processors & managing them. Final Cut Pro is multithreaded and although I haven't definitive confirmation one way or the other I suspect Final Cut Express is also.
But the real question is are you doing video that is sufficiently demanding that you need a bigger / faster machine? There are so many factors that affect the real and apparent performance of computers, and for the vast majority of users multithreading is not the limiting factor. Processor speed, number of processors, amount of RAM, bus speed, hard drive interface & hard drive speed play a much more significant role in how fast or capable your computer is.
Will you see a difference in FCE on a single processor 1.8GHz G5 vs a dual processor 1.8GHz G5? Probably in rendering times and the number of RT effects that can be played simultaneously in the Canvas.
Will you see a difference between a 1.8GHz DP machine and a 2.3GHz DP machine? Yes, assuming they have the same amount of memory & type of hard drives. The 2.3GHz DP G5 not only has faster processors but Apple made other improvements to the G5 line over time that made them bigger / faster / better, as it does with all its product lines.
If you have the budget, believe the machine is worth the money and has a better cost/benefit ratio for you, go with the higher processor speed, but make sure you have enough RAM memory too. And don't worry about multithreading ...

  • Anyone actual using CS3 on Mac Tiger OS???

    Hello those reading -
Big dilemma in my current work flow . . . need to see if it's
    possible
to run/use brand new purchased CS3 on a Macintosh Tiger OS.
Is anyone out there actually creating content (specifically
    movies from QT) using
    the Tiger OS.
Has it been stable - or any REAL problems?
Thank you for any help and insight.
    Kind regards,
    Luke

I have been using CS3 both with Tiger (G5 Single Processor @
1.8gHz with 3.5 GB of memory) and Leopard (MacBook Core Duo @ 2.0
gHz with 2GB of RAM) without any problems.

  • Virtual mail hosts: 255 character limit on SPF records

This one was a surprise to me, and caused a lot of headache, so I thought I'd pass it along.
I'm running multiple virtual mail hosts off of my doughty PowerMac single G5 1.8GHz running OS X Server 10.4.11. Some of the outgoing mail was being bounced as spam because a) there wasn't an SPF record on any of the domains and b) the domain of the mailserver didn't always match the domain of the sender. (Most often, it went out under the hostname of the server, cerberus.limbo.jcf.org—which is useless, since that's a LAN address.)
Trying to be a good citizen (and make sure that all of everyone's mail got through), I added SPF records that explicitly named each and every mailserver on the machine, just so that everything was clear and aboveboard—but they ended up being about 500 characters long.
Fastforward a week or two... and I was having problems with my DNS zones loading—I'd get errors that they'd timed out. After pulling my hair out for a while, I discovered that TXT records have a limit of 255 characters (including spaces, etc.) Some folks running servers on non-OS X Server machines have split the records over multiple TXT records (does that even work?), but you get exactly one TXT record per OS X Server machine: the Comment box.
I've now simplified the SPF records so that they read something like this:
    +v=spf1 a mx mx:cerberus.limbo.jcf.org mx:cerberus.jcf.org mx:jcf.org ip:173.164.140.96/30 ip:207.58.140.213/30 include:comcast.businessclass.net include:comcast.com -all+
    To translate:
    • +v=spf1 a mx+ It authorizes deliveries from any IP listed in the DNS zone, and from any mailserver defined in the zone
    • +mx:cerberus.limbo.jcf.org mx:cerberus.jcf.org mx:jcf.org+ It also explicitly authorizes deliveries from the server's main LAN and internet DNS names as well as the domain of the foundation for which I work (and through which emails are occasionally relayed)
    • +ip:173.164.140.96/30 ip:207.58.140.213/30+ Next it authorizes the public static IP blocks for the server and the foundation's remote server
    • +include:comcast.businessclass.net include:comcast.com+ Finally it includes the domain names of the ISP through which most of the mail are relayed
    • -all The last item says that if the mail didn't originate from one of those addresses, it isn't ours.
(I think that I've got that right. If I've botched it anywhere, let me know, okay?)
That's 169 characters. The DNS zones loaded happily, and the mail seems to be going out without getting bounced. So far so good!
(There's probably a way to get the hostname on each email to match the domain from which it is being addressed, but I haven't gotten there yet.)

Most often, it went out under the hostname of the server, cerberus.limbo.jcf.org—which is useless, since that's a LAN address.
You can control this via the myhostname setting in Postfix. This defines the name it uses to identify itself to remote mail servers, which sounds like it'll address a lot of your issues.
I added SPF records that explicitly named each and every mailserver on the machine, just so that everything was clear and aboveboard—but they ended up being about 500 characters long.
OK, this doesn't make sense. You don't need to list every virtual hostname for every domain.
All you need to do is add this specific mail server's address in each domain.
There's no requirement that the hostname of the mail server matches the domain name, so it's entirely valid to create an SPF record in domain1.com that lists mailserver.someotherdomain.com as authoritative. Then, as long as postfix's myhostname says it's mailserver.someotherdomain.com and your reverse DNS resolves to that address your problem is solved.
...but you get exactly one TXT record per OS X Server machine: the Comment box.
Unless you edit your zone file directly and add whatever other records you like. However, given the above, I don't think the 255-character limit should be an issue.
Even if you didn't want to mess with your zone files directly there's still a way around that - SPF allows for an 'include' record which basically tells remote servers to include the record from some other domain, so for each domain you could just tell it to include some other domain's record (which, in turn, could include another domain) allowing virtually unlimited record length (or, at least, 255 characters per domain you manage).
    SPF Includes are covered here.
    • include:comcast.businessclass.net include:comcast.com Finally it includes the domain names of the ISP through which most of the mail are relayed
Bzzzz. You've now allowed any other customer of comcastbusiness.net and comcast.com to send mail on your behalf. You probably don't want to do that. When you consider that 'comcast.com' includes every one of their residential customers you can see that you really don't want to do that.
