2.1 Software Upgrade Renders iTouch Disabled

I upgraded and paid the $9.95 plus tax, to upgrade the software to version 2.1 earlier today. iTunes charged me with no problem, the file downloaded with no problem, but then came the install and restore process... after which I started tearing my hiar out for the next 4 hours. It kept throwing all sorts of errors (cannot restore, unknown error occured 1604 or 1602). Could not get it to restore, no many how many times I tried the troubleshooting steps for this error/problem. It wasn't until I found the steps posted by "CasperGemini" here (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=8137143 ), that I FINALLY was able to get the iTouch unstuck from restore mode, and reset and restore my device. His/her advice literally kept me from tearing the rest of my hiar out and going bald.
The only thing I want now is my money back from Apple for this horrid and buggy software 2.1 update, as there is NO way I will EVER update the software again, free or not. My iTouch (bought this past May 2008), has software version 1.1.5 and that is the way it will stay.
For anyone experiencing the same problems I have when paying and updating to software version 2.1, and are now stuck in restore mode, I urge you to follow the link I provided above, and follow the steps given. It was the ONLY thing that worked for me. And if anyone knows who I shoudl contact for a refund, please let me know! Thanks and good luck to all:-)

Not to be critical, but it wasn't 2.1 that was crashing the iPod Touches, it was the 2.0 software update.
2.1.1 does work well with both the 1 Gen and the 2 Gen Touches. Apple was, for a while, taking iPod's out of recovery mode (well at least they were at my Apple Store).
The 2.0 had one software bug that would overload the motherboard of the old iPods abd cause problems like being stuck in recovery mode. For the iPods that could handle it, and the ones that were fixed to handle it, the software was still too advanced and complicated for the old hardware. The 2.1 was developed to smooth the OS on the 2.0 and increase battery life. The 2.1 was not technically a downgrade, just a changed in script codes.
What I am saying is that you've got your information wrong and there is no reason that you should give up on Apple.

  • Can't install software upgrade to iTouch with 1.1.4.

I recently acquired an 16 GB iTouch that already had version 1.1.4, and I purchased the January 1.1.4 software upgrade to get email, etc.
I can see the purchase for the upgrade in my account, but it won't install the upgrade to my iTouch because of an unknown error OxE8000001. I restored the iTouch, but that didn't help. Every time I sync, I get the same error message.
    Can anyone help with this?
I have read the help notes on the website; I'm on the home computer I normally sync on, I have iTunes 7.6, etc.

Well, I was hesitant to do that, since all the Apple info on the web said that you had to be logged into the account in which you purchase the software upgrade.
However, I found some additional info at this website: http://www.apple.com/support/ipodtouch/troubleshooting/ipodtouch/#
It suggested that if all else failed, try: Tap Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Contents and Settings
When I did that and restarted and sync'd, it finally downloaded by software upgrade!! Hooray! It only took me about 5 hours to accomplish this! Thanks for your help, Scott!

As I downloaded new software upgrade in my iPod nano 7 th gen and also new iTunes upgrade then all data on my iPod got erased and now when I am trying to sync it again then sync button is disabled on the windows screen . Kindly help

From the OP: "My old computer got a virus and when that happened all my music was lost. "
They don't have the music on their computer so they cannot transfer the iTunes folder, from the computer to their iPod and then to the new computer. And if they try to enable disk use on the iPod it will erase all the music that is on it. The method you cited is moving the files in a data format using the iPod as a flash drive. It doesn't work if they are in music format. That is why I suggested Yamipod.

  • IPod Touch skips, stutters, glitches through songs since software upgrade!

    Hi everyone,
*Since I upgraded my iPod Touch* to the latest available software update +(for the 1st Gen is 3.1.3)+, it has become *unable to properly play any music encoded above 128kbps*. Before the upgrade, my iPod could play music encoded in any higher bitrates like a champ! All the way to 320kbps, variable, even Apple Lossless format used to play flawlessly.
Suddenly after the last *firmware update*, most of the songs in my iPod Touch would *skip, glitch and garble, making electronic glitches and annoying noises* for no apparent reason. On occasion, the iPod would even *add several second of silence in the middle of random songs*. It's bizarre!
It definitely took me a while to figure it out, and spent weeks testing and researching what could be the problem. It was truly driving me nuts! The result of all these tests was clear: the *iPod Touch now CHOKES on any music file encoded higher than 128 kbps ACC*. Truly pathetic for such an expensive little jukebox. Even the early MP3 players I owned 10 years ago were able to play variable rate MP3 files without a glitch. *_This is a major bug that needs to be solved_*.
For those interested, I did the following tests through my weeks of research to find out the culprit to this problem:
    - - - Reinstalled the device software
    - - - Reformatted the device, then updated the software
    - - - Uninstalled all apps, reinstalled and tested my music after reinstalling each app
    - - - Disabled Wi-Fi (no difference)
    - - - Copied over my music library from scratch, several times (it was painful)
    - - - Reformatted a few albums in different bitrates, from 96kbps, all the way to 320kbps, both in constant and variable rates, and tested them one by one. This took days.
In the end, there is one thing that was consistently clear: *any songs encoded over 128kbps would skip, glitch and sound corrupted. Time after time*. All those music files I had encoded at higher rates +(192 kbps, variable 240 kbps and beyond)+ would make the iPod choke.
There is one temporary solution to this mess, but it involves reducing the quality of your music files: The only way I can now play my music collection in my iPod Touch without skips and glitches is by downconverting my files to the now *obsolete 128kbps*. Only when I converted my music to 128kbps, the annoying skips and glitches stopped. For an audiophile like myself, this was an absolutely painful decision, as I can tell the *obvious loss in quality and nuance in my music files since i had to downconvert them*.
Funny: this skipping problem *also affects any files purchased from iTunes* +(encoded at 240 kbps variable rate)+. Should I ask for my money back, Apple?
I find this irritating and painful, since *the ONE THING the iPod is supposed to do well* (aside from apps, games, and web browsing) *is to PLAY AUDIO AND MUSIC FILES*.
I spent a lot of money on this machine, and until recently it worked like magic; I just wished it played music again like it's supposed to. It's what the iPod was built to do. *Apple: Please fix the software!*
I wonder if there's a forum where I could post my detailed findings, so Apple engineers can take note of this *MAJOR BUG*.
PS: I have recently learned this is a very common bug, and tons of people are reaching out telling me they are experiencing the same annoying problems. Furthermore, *this seems to affect not just the 1st Gen, but ALL generations of the iPod Touch*. It's a *widespread software issue* that was not properly addressed in the latest software upgrade. I'm starting to worry about Apple's quality assurance process.

Hi everyone. Thanks to a tip in another forum, I think I had a breakthrough regarding this problem. I have the strong suspicion it's not the software for the iPod Touch, but instead, the problem comes from *iTunes and how it handles USB 2.0 transfers*.
To make a long story short, all your *music that's encoded above 128 kbps gets corrupted when you transfer it to your Touch from iTunes through your USB 2.0 connection*. That's where the problem is!
    I performed this simple test:
    *PART 1 - WIFI*
    - I connected my iPod Touch via Wi-Fi to the iTunes Store. Bought an album encoded at a very high bitrate (Coldplay's "Viva la Vida", encoded at 256KBPS).
    - Downloaded the Coldplay album directly to my iPod Touch via Wi-Fi.
    - Tested every song in the album, and they all played flawlessly.
    *PART 2 - USB 2.0*
    - Now, I erased the Coldplay album from my iPod Touch.
    - Connected my iPod Touch to my computer, and downloaded the album again via iTunes. I copied the very same album to my iPod Touch, this time using the USB 2.0 connection.
    - I tested every song in the album. Guess what: most of them are corrupted, skipping, glitching, making garbled noises.
I think a reached a minor "eureka" moment. *It's not the iPod Touch software: It's iTunes, and how iTunes deals with your USB 2.0 connection*.
Now, I'm not an engineer, and I don't know how to fix this problem. I wonder if there's anyone out there there that knows why high bitrate files get corrupted during the file transfer. Hope anyone can shed some additional light on this issue, so we can find a solution.

  • Blackberry Desktop Software - Request Option to Disable Software from Loading During Start-Up

After Blackberry Desktop Software automatic updates. Software become part of Start-Up option or menu. I do not want Blackberry Desktop Software to automatically load during Start-Up. The Desktop Software does not have a user friendly option to disable the desktop software from loading during start-up. Am writing you to add this feature to your desktop software. I've just completed loading v5.0.1 and again I need to hunt and peck a way through windows to delete this software from loading during start-up. This software needs to have a user friendly option to disable the desktop software from loading during start-up. When I loaded v4.x.x when I bought my blackberry your set-up wizard had this disable option, but all your subsequent software upgrades change my windows start-up to load blackberry desktop manager software. Please add this feature to your software.

  • Unstable finder since recent (~4/20) 'software upgrade"

    PB G3 aluminum 15" with OSX.4.11
Recent automatic 'software upgrade' on ~4/20/09 has rendered my G3 PB unstable.
Software included new Safari, iTunes, Security, etc.
In ANY other program window, etc. the PB now shifts back to the FINDER about every 10-15 seconds .... rebooting the entire finder each time.
Is there any way to delete or modify or remove these 'upgrades' ... so that I can get back to 'normal' operation. This computer is being used to control ALL software/instrmentation on a boat that is traveling the high seas (through the 3rd world) and its function vitally important (for navigation, safety etc.) that I return back to a 'stable' OS.
HOW DO I DELETE OR REMOVE THESE RECENT 'SOFTWARE UPGRADES' ???????????????
All 'extraneous' items such as 'sleep', screen saver, etc. have been turned off ... without result.
    Will appreciate ANY help given.

Hi Richard, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Let me define the 'instability' present with the finder .... every 15 or seconds, and no matter which program/application Im working, the finder reboots itself and the finder comes to front of the stack of windows (sorry to use that word). All applications 'default' to the finder being listed in apple menu bar; the applications are still active but the finder becomes the 'dominant' window at every ~seconds.
Most likely it's Stuffit AVR, though a few others have been implicated see if System Preferences has a Stuffit Pref Pane. click stop...
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1873700&tstart=0
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for action in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.
    Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it is some 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

  • Incompatible renderer Multiprocessing disabled AE6

    Hello,
I am using Windows 7 pro, 12 gigs ram, i7 920 (quad core) oc'd to 3.6 and a gtx 480(I know its not supported)
I recently upgraded to Production Premium CS6 and I have a question about the "Incompatible renderer, Multiprocessing Disabled" message shown in the info panel at times.
    So heres the story, trying to make it short;
I know that I have a 480gtx and the card is not supported for GPU accelerated etc.  I did an edit to the file to allow my card to be used.  In the Preferences/preview/gpu info, it is showing my card and alowing the GPU to be used for rendering. And even tho I am getting that error in the info panel, it seems to load into the ram relatively fast.
The project I am ram previewing when the error comes up is just a simple text layer with some 3d extrusion with some lights.  It also has a layer with Particular 2.1 on it, and includes the particle, which is the 3D extruded text in a pre-comp. So the pre comp is extruded 3d text and this becomes the particles.
I am not looking to trouble shoot why it is giving the error to fix it, as I believe it has something to do with me using the ray tracing engine along with particular. I am posting this info to find out if this is really the case or if it is the issue of my card being unsupported and being incompatible.
I was hoping someone on here might have particular 2.1 and could try it with a supported card and see if they recieve the same error in the info panel.
I know also that the 3D ray trace can not render certain things, so this is really just me asking for someone to see if they are getting the same issue with a supported card.
    Thanks for your help.

Thank you for the reply, I would assume that the Cuda cores would pick up the processing?

  • First dumb software upgrade ever

Please -- someone tell me -- why would Software Update allow download and installation of new OSX software (iTunes 7.4.2) on top of an OS version that does not support it? Apple updates have always -- ALWAYS -- been the most intelligent in terms of not messing up one's system but someone surely dropped the ball here. So: do I upgrade to 10.4.7 or do I reinstall iTunes 7.2 (on my PPC G4 PB/OSX 10.4.2)? I lean towards the latter: there was little wrong with 10.4.2 AFAICS. What do you advise?

    Hi Mike,
Thanks so much for your help. I followed your instructions and everything was fine (even w/o repairing permissions). What surprised me was that in this case Apple's software upgrade simply wrote IT742 right over a working copy of IT72, rendering IT inoperable. The installer might at least have checked the OS version and asked: "if you install this version of IT on this version of MacOSX, IT will not run without an OS upgrade -- continue Y/N?". I am very happy with MacOS 10.4.2, so would have answered N. I have been using Macs since the year dot and it was always amazingly intelligent about not screwing things up, so I was a littel shocked. I guess we have been spoiled by Apple in the past!

  • Downloading software upgrade, but it seems "stuck"

I am attempting to download a new version of software on my ITouch.  It has taken several hours already, and it's not complete.  I tried to close the browser, but I received a message indicating that I can't because of the software upgrade is still in progress.
    Any suggestioins?

    - Just wait
    - Or force quite the browser and try again.
It is the download that is stuck and not the update, right?

  • Upgrading to 1.1.4 and losing January Software Upgrade

    Hi,
I've just upgraded my 16GB iTouch to 1.1.4
Unfortunately, when I did, it lost the January Software Upgrade.
I not longer have the laptop that I used to install the Software update, so I don't have my own copy of "iPod touch App Pack 4A93.ipa".
I tried to use my friends copy of the file, but it's not letting me install it.
I keep getting "The iPod touch Software Upgrade was not installed on this iPod "iTouch" because you are not authorized for it on this computer"
I've verified that I'm logged in with my apple ID, but I think the ipa file is tied to my friends account.
Is there any way that I can download a new ipa file for my account? or is there anything else that I'm missing?
I've no way of getting the computer back.
    missing my mail already
    thanks,
    Stephen.

perhaps the only way you will be able to get it back now is to send an email to apple support explaining your situation. i would also check your purchase history and provide them with the order number from when you purchased the upgrade. i am pretty sure they will allow you to have it again. they will put it in your account and you will have to click the "check for purchases" option in itunes to download it.

Have an iPad mini with latest software upgrade 8.1.2. Verizon Messaging app crashes on use after one year with no problems. I deleted the app and downloaded a clean version. It crashes whether or not I have any apps running in the background. Sometimes I can type part of a message before it crashes. Other times it crashes as soon as I try to use the app at all. Neither Apple Support nor Verizon store staff could find any reason for the problems. Any ideas??
THE TEXT SHOULD SAY THE PROBLEM IS WITH THE APP CRASHING Message was edited by: Steady_RI

Steady_RI, thanks for keeping us posted. Did you uninstall that application by pressing/holding down the icon until the (X) appears? Tap the (X) to delete it. Once the application has been deleted, you will need to reset the network settings on your device in Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings. Power that device off/on and then download the application again. Additionally, we also recommend that you disable Wi-Fi and connect to our network to test the messaging feature again.

  • Nokia N96 Software upgrade

    Hi,
In November I bought the N96 from Carphone warehouse.  I really like most things about the phone but was very disappointed by the battery life.  Just before Christmas I attempted to upgrade the software (from verion 11 to 12)to see if that will improve the battery life.  Unfortunatly something went wrong and I was unable to turn the phone back on.
I tried various thing which I have seen on various websites to get it working again including the 3 finger reset however wasn't able to get it working again.
I took the phone into Carphone Warehouse who also could not fix it so the phone was sent to Nokia.  On the 15th the phone was returned to Carphone warehouse however it failed a quality test and finally earlier this week I was given a replacement phone (Software version 11).
Having used the phone for 4 days I am still disappointed by the battery life.  It gives me battery warnings by the end of the day having taken it of the charger when I leave for work in the morning.
Obviously I am very reluctant after my last attempt to try and do the software upgrade again.  Can anyone tell me if the software upgrade is worth doing?  Does it improved the battery life? What other things does it fix?
What tips do you have for me to avoid turning my phone into a brick again?
    Regards,
    Ben

Before you do anything, the N96 takes up to a few days to index all user files. During this period, the phone is slow and it uses a bit more power. Also, the battery requires a few charge cycles before it reaches peak performance. You battery life should keep improving for the first half dozen of so charge cycles.
There are a few steps you can take to enable you to squeeze a little more standby time from your battery. These include:
    1. Switch the phone from Dual Mode to GSM only
    2. Turn off bluetooth when not required
    3. Turn off Wlan scanning when not required
    4. Reduce the backlight power saver time
    5. Reduce backlight brightness
    6. Exit any applications when not in use
    7. Disable the "breathing" light
Personally I did not notice any improvement in battery life going from V11 to V12.
If you ever try updating again, I would strongly recommend you doing it FOTA (Firmware over the air) rather than using NSU.
