2.1 Update Broke more iPod accessory compatibility

When I got my iPhone 3G I knew there were problems with existing iPod accessories. So when buying a new head unit for our car we went to the store and tried them all out with the phone and a cable.
We purchased a unit that allowed the iPhone to be controlled through the head unit. The sound would mute (fade out) beautifully when calls were received (and the audio sent to the appropriate in-car bluetooth unit) and then fade back in when the call was done.
The unit worked with a USB cable and so wasn't prone to the "power on the firewire pins" problems that a lot of other accessories had.
As of the 2.1 firmware update, the head unit can no longer work with the iPhone. It simply attempts to connect constantly. Never actually connecting.
FAIL.

2.1 seems to be causing more problems that fixes man
All my accessories no longer work on this phone
And I refuse to buy all new ones.
I sure hope Apple addresses this problem with the 2.1 Operating System ceasing use with accessories.
I got a replacement Iphone on the way, maybe I will get lucky and it will have the 2.0.2 OS on it. Crossing my fingers man
Applecare wasn't helpful at all with this problem either.
The tech did say they are getting alot of complaints over the Apple DEV team killing off accessories with this OS Update to 2.1
What have you tried to get urs back working???
I did a reset as well as clearing all data, a full restore
Nothing
Only thing to fix this is JB the Phone back to the older OS.
And we shouldn't have to do this being consumers.

  • The new updater broke my ipod

I've just installed the new updater for my 5G iPod. Now, when I've got the backlight set to off, I can no longer turn it on again by holding the menu key for a few seconds - it just goes to the previous menu no matter how long I hold it down. However, the backlight does work normally when on a timeout setting
Anyone else having this problem? Think I'll get hold of the bug-fix updater (the previous version!).

the reason is that its doin it is because for the
hold menu thing is that you have to be at the main
menu to turn it off.. its really only for when you
have it switched to "always on" when you have it on
    like that. then it works
No, it doesn't work at the main menu either. And no, it did work from anywhere with version 1.0.
Basically, the updater broke it like I said, and there was another person who posted the same problem at the same time i did.
This is a bug caused by the updater.

  • Ipod updater broke my ipod

    To whom it may concern,
My name is Benji. I am one of the customer of apple and Mac. I got many staffs from apple, and I believe it's really a good company. Unfortunately, one day after I used the ipod updater 2005-9-23, one of my ipod, an ipod mini 4GB lost it functionality. The situation is like after installion the ipod updater, a apple logo shown on the screen of my ipod mini, and then suddenly, a folder logo appear with "www.apple.com/support/ipod". I did search on that website and got no solution. Then I went to one of the apple store which is in Staten Island mall for assistance. I made an assigment there, and the staff who responds to my case told me that they couldn't fix it, since mine is an old generation ipod. I asked him whether that ipod updater granteen the safety of user, he then told me to post my situation online to you to see whether I would get a replacement or any refund on it. Please help me, since that ipod is the gift from my girl friend. And I did read the requirment before installation. I hope apple would reponds to this accident.
    Thank you so much,
To install and use iPod Software 1.4 for iPod mini and iPod Software 3.1 for iPod with Click Wheel, you need:
    • An iPod mini or an iPod with Click Wheel
    • A PC with a high-power USB port or card (USB 2.0 recommended), or FireWire* port or card
    • Windows 2000 with Service Pack 4 or later, or Windows XP Home or Professional with Service Pack 2 or later
    • iTunes 4.7 or later

    further info ...
If a sad iPod icon or an exclamation point and folder icon appears on your iPod’s screen, or with sounds of clicking or HD whirring, it is usually the sign of a hard drive problem and you have the power to do something about it now. Your silver bullet of resolving your iPod issue – is to restore your iPod to factory settings.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60983
If you're having trouble, try these steps at different levels one at a time until the issue is resolved. These steps will often whip your iPod back into shape.
Make sure you do all the following “TRYs”
    A. Try to wait 30 minutes while iPod is charging.
    B. Try another FireWire or USB through Dock Connector cable.
    C. Try another FireWire or USB port on your computer .
    D. Try to disconnect all devices from your computer's FireWire and USB ports.
    E. Try to download and install the latest version of iPod software and iTunes
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
For old and other versions of iPod updater for window you can get here
    http://www.ipodwizard.net/showthread.php?t=7369
    F. Try these five steps (known as the five Rs) and it would conquer most iPod issues.
    http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/
    G. Try to put the iPod into Disk Mode if it fails to appear on the desktop
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93651
If none of these steps address the issue, you may need to go to Intermediate level listed below in logical order. Check from the top of the lists to see if that is what keeping iPod from appearing on your computer in order for doing the Restore.
    Intermediate Level
    A. Try to connect your iPod with another computer with the iPod updater pre-installed.
    B. Still can’t see your iPod, put it in Disk Mode and connect with a computer, instead of doing a Restore on iPod Updater. Go and format the iPod instead.
    For Mac computer
    1. Open the disk utility, hope your iPod appears there (left hand side), highlight it
    2. Go to Tab “Partition”, click either “Delete” or “Partition”, if fails, skip this step and go to 3
    3. Go to Tab “Erase” , choose Volume Format as “MAC OS Extended (Journaled), and click Erase, again if fails, skip it and go to 4
    4. Same as step 3, but open the “Security Options....” and choose “Zero Out Data” before click Erase. It will take 1 to 2 hours to complete.
    5. Eject your iPod and do a Reset
    6. Open the iTunes 7 and click “Restore”
    For Window computer
    Go to folder “My Computer”
Hope you can see your iPod there and right click on the iPod
Choose “Format”. Ensure the settings are at “Default” and that “Quick Format” is not checked
    Now select “Format”
Eject your iPod and do a Reset
Open the iTunes 7 and click “Restore”
In case you do not manage to do a “Format” on a window computer, try to use some 3rd party disk utility software, e.g.“HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool”.

    C. Windows users having trouble with their iPods should locate a Mac user. In many cases when an iPod won't show up on a PC that it will show up on the Mac. Then it can be restored. When the PC user returns to his computer the iPod will be recognized by the PC, reformatted for the PC, and usable again. By the way, it works in reverse too. A Mac user often can get his iPod back by connecting it to a PC and restoring it.
    Tips
    a. It does not matter whether the format is completed or not, the key is to erase (or partly) the corrupted firmware files on the Hard Drive of the iPod. After that, when the iPod re-connected with a computer, it will be recognized as an fresh external hard drive, it will show up on the iTunes 7.
    b. It is not a difficult issue for a Mac user to find a window base computer, for a PC user, if they can’t find any Mac user, they can go to a nearest Apple Shop for a favor.
    c. You may need to switch around the PC and Mac, try to do several attempts between “Format” and “Restore”

    Advance Level
    A. Diagnostic mode solution
If you have tried trouble shooting your iPod to no avail after all the steps above, chances are your iPod has a hardware problem. The iPod's built-in Diagnostic Mode is a quick and easy way to determine if you have a "bad" iPod.
You need to restart your iPod before putting it into Diagnostic Mode. Check that your hold switch is off by sliding the switch away from the headphone jack. Toggle it on and off to be safe.
Press and hold the following combination of buttons simultaneously for approximately 10 seconds to reset the iPod.
    iPod 1G to 3G: "Menu" and "Play/Pause"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Menu" and "Select"
The Apple logo will appear and you should feel the hard drive spinning up. Press and hold the following sequence of buttons:
iPod 1G to 3G: "REW", "FFW" and "Select"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Back" and "Select"
You will hear an audible chirp sound (3G models and higher) and the Apple logo should appear backwards. You are now in Diagnostic Mode. Navigate the list of tests using "REW" and "FFW". The scroll wheel will not function while in diagnostic mode. For further details on Diagnostic mode can be found at http://www.methodshop.com/mp3/ipodsupport/diagnosticmode/
Try to do the 5in1, HDD R/W and HDD scan tests. Some successful cases have been reported after the running the few tests under the Diagnostic mode. In case it does not work in your case, and the scan tests reports show some errors then it proves your iPod has a hardware problem and it needs a repairing service.
    B. Format your iPod with a start disk
I have not tried this solution myself, I heard that there were few successful cases that the users managed to get their iPod (you must put your iPod in disk mode before connecting with a computer) mounted by the computer, which was booted by a system startup disk. For Mac, you can use the Disk Utility (on the Tiger OS system disk), for PC user, you can use the window OS system disk. Try to find a way to reformat your iPod, again it does not matter which format (FAT32, NTFS or HFS+) you choose, the key is to erase the corrupted system files on the iPod. Then eject your iPod and do a Reset to switch out from Disk Mode. Reboot your computer at the normal way, connect your iPod back with it, open the iPod updater, and hopefully your iPod will appear there for the Restore.
If none of these steps address the issue, your iPod may need to be repaired.
Consider setting up a mail-in repair for your iPod http://depot.info.apple.com/ipod/
Or visit your local Apple Retail Store http://www.apple.com/retail/
In case your iPod is no longer covered by the warranty and you want to find a second repairing company, you can try iPodResQ or ifixit at your own risk
    http://www.ipodresq.com/index.php
    http://www.ifixit.com/
Just in case that you are at the following situation
    Your iPod warranty is expired
You don’t want to pay any service charges
You are prepared to buy a new one
You can’t accept the re-sell value of your broken iPod
Rather than leave your iPod as paper-weight or throw it away.
You can try the following, but again, only do it as your last resort and at your own risk.
Warning !!!! – It may or may not manage to solve your problem, and with a risk that you may further damage your iPod, which end up as an expensive paper weight or you need to pay more higher repairing cost. Therefore, please re-consider again whether you want to try the next level
    Last Resort Level
    1. . Disconnecting the Hard Drive and battery inside the iPod – Warning !! Your iPod warranty will be waived once you open the iPod.
In Hong Kong there are some electronic shops offering an iPod service for Sad iPod, the first thing they do is to open up the iPod’s case and disconnecting the battery and the Hard Drive from the main board of the iPod. Wait for 5-10 minutes and reconnecting them back. The reason behind which I can think of is to do a fully reset of a processor of the iPod. In case you want do it itself and you believe that you are good on fixing the electronics devices and have experience to deal with small bits of electronic parts, then you can read the following of how to open the iPod case for battery and HDD replacement (with Quicktimes)
    http://eshop.macsales.com/tech_center/index.cfm?page=Video/directory.html
2.Press the reset button on the Hard Drive inside the iPod – Suggestion from Kill8joy
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2438774#2438774
Have I tried these myself? No, I am afraid to do it myself as I am squeamish about tinkering inside electronic devices, I have few experiences that either I broke the parts (which are normally tiny or fragile) or failed to put the parts back to the main case. Therefore, I agree with suggestion to have it fixed by a Pro.

I am not suggesting that you should follow as well, but just read them as your reference. You are the person to make the call.
Finally, I read a fair comments from dwb, regarding of slapping the back of the iPod multiple times
Quote “This has been discussed numerous times as a 'fix'. It does work, at least for a while. In fact I remember using the same basic trick to revive Seagate and Quantam drives back in the mid to late 1980's. Why these tiny hard drives go bad I don't know - could be the actuator gets stuck in place or misaligned. Could be the platter gets stuck or the motor gets stuck. 'Stiction' was a problem for drives back in the 80's. Unfortunately the fix can cause damage to the platter so we temporarily fix one problem by creating another. But I know of two instances where a little slap onto the table revived the iPods and they are still worked a year or more later.”UnQuote

  • Latest iTunes update broke my iPod 3rd gen connection

Recently, iTunes decided to send an update to break my iPod connection. Well, it worked. It broke any connection to iTunes, as well as my system.
    I have;
    - tried resetting the iPod. (http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1363)
    - UnInstalled -ALL- Apple software
    - Re-Installed iTunes
Result - iPod shows connected on the iPod, but not in Windows.
    What else can I try??

    Unistall everything Apple.

  • IPhone update broke the iPod

Since the update none of my iTunes purchased videos play ("This movie could not be played"), and my music will not play either (I don't have my headphones with me, so it may be playing without the speaker). Videos are for sure broken. Any ideas?

I tried to purchase a song, and it appeared to download but then I got an error message saying I had to download it on my computer. So I did that, created a playlist from it, checked it, and synced. It then wiped out all of my songs except for one playlist (not the one containing the new purchase). Now I can't do a manual sync any more; I have to let iTunes pick what I get to listen to. C'mon, Apple, do you QA any of this before shipping?

  • Apple broke my iPod and refused to fix it, What should I do?

Sometime around the end of September, I downloaded iTunes version 5.0 (I believe). The first time I opened it, it told me I needed to download the software updater for my iPod mini. So I downloaded the Software Updater, then the problems started.
This was two months ago, so I don't remember exactly everything that happened.
I clicked "Update" from the choices, and it was updating my iPod. Then the program froze. I eventually closed it, and my iPod had that file folder icon with the ! on the display. I ran the Updater again, and it froze again. I went to the website, and tried everything, even selecting "Refresh" from the software updater, and it froze again.
The software updater broke my iPod.
So I sent it in for service one month later. I would have sent it in sooner, but when I saw they were going to charge me $30 for shipping to fix their mistake, I was outraged, and sent them an e-mail. They never replied.
So I sent my iPod, and they sent it back unfixed. Over the course of three weeks, I sent them maybe four e-mails, and it took them that long to reply. They told me they have the right to refuse service on any iPod.
And if that wasn't bad enough...
I can't uninstall iTunes off my computer. I want everything Apple-related off my computer, but they did something so I can never get rid of iTunes, I know it.
I'm a young college student. I can't afford to buy another MP3 player. I think Apple, a multi-billion dollar company, can pay to fix my iPod that their program broke.
    I just don't get it...

SO you waited a month, got more ticked off and then decided to send it in for $30?
Yes. I know that sounds stupid, but they didn't reply to my e-mail, so I eventually succumbed to their wicked practices and sent it in with a service request.
Do you meanit didn't work or did they tell you they did nothing to it?
There was a letter saying they didn't fix it, and to call a phone number if I had questions. The phone number was just a recording of the letter they sent.
They told you the warranty was void because of something you did to the iPod?
I sent it in for the ! file folder problem, and they didn't fix that. I don't know why.
Start -> Control Panel -> Add or Remove Programs
    Yeah, no kidding.
I've tried that a few times, and the Uninstall program never comes up.
So I downloaded the new version of iTunes, figuring I would try to uninstall the new version. But I can't install the new version. Error #1627 or something.
Have you tried all the links on the iPod Service and Support page?
Yes. When I first got the file folder icon, I did everything on the site. Tried resetting it, and nothing happened. Tried putting it in disk mode, but nothing happened. Left it plugged in for hours. Did it while it was plugged in, nothing. Unplugged it and tried again, nothing.
It's been unused for nearly 2 months now.
I just want them to fix it. Is that so much to ask? Their program caused the stupid ! folder icon to come up and keep my iPod from working. Yet they refuse to help me. It took them 3 weeks to answer my e-mail, and all they did was send me the same form letter I got with my returned iPod, and on the phone.
I swear, I am never buying another Apple product as long as I live. Awful awful customer service. You can't even get a human response out of anyone.

  • I have an ipod 3 and i cant update it more then 4.1 why?

i have an ipod 2g and i cant update it more then 4.1 why?

To go to iOS 4.2.1 you need iTunes 10 or later on the computer. If a Mac that requires OSX 10,5,8 or later.
To more easily find compatible apps:
iOSSearch - search the iTunes store for compatible apps.
Apple Club - filter apps by iOS version.
Starting when iOS 7 was released, Apple now allows downloading the last compatible version of some apps (iOS 4.2.1 and later only)
App Store: Downloading Older Versions of Apps on iOS - Apple Club
App Store: Install the latest compatible version of an app
You first have to download the non-compatible version on your computer. Then when you try to purchase the version on your iPod you will be offered a compatible version if one exists.

Ever since I updated iTunes my iPods will not sync with my cars.I have a 30g and 60g 5th gen iPods that I use in my two car. • Cannot update or eject Ipod using Itunes 7.

    Hey all.
I can see that Itunes 7 is giving people quite a bit of grief. I have installed it and when i try and update my 60GB Ipod with version 1.2 (my current version is 1.1) it comes up with the message "Ipod cannot be updated because it contains files that are in use by another application". It will not let me eject my Ipod through itunes for the same reason, i have to eject it using Windows.
I have tried with three different Ipods and it is the same for all of them. I have also tried resetting my Ipod manually with no luck. Any help is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.

I am posting a possible solution to all these problems I and so many of you have said you've experienced. I think I had two things working against me:
    1) I did not have a 2.0 USB port when trying to update my ipod to version 1.2. I think this effected the connection and iTunes ability to recognize my iPod.
Anyway, I put in a new USB 2.0 card in my computer, giving me new ports off the mother board, and my connection and update worked.
    2) I was not giving it enough time. After I installed the USB card and everything I tried to update my iPod a couple of times, but still had a long slow stall that I did not wait through. I kept at it though and a few days later I set it up to update and left to go out to dinner. Hours late I came back and found things different. I used windows to disconnect my iPod and then noticed a dark "working" bar on my iPod. It was finally updating the device. I waited a while unitl it was finished and then diconnected and ever since then I've got version 1.2 on the iPod and things are working better.
So, my advice: check your USB ports and then give it a few hours.
I really hope this works for you. I worked on this problem for two months and I'm so glad it finally came through. I wish Apple would post some more resolutions that are better than mine.
    Good luck,
    Galahad

Welcome to the Support Communities!  I'm not sure from your post what steps you have tried, but it sounds like you may need to use recovery mode to address the issue with your unresponsive iPod touch.

If you can't update or restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
You can put your iOS device into recovery mode, then restore it using iTunes.
    Use recovery mode
You might need to use recovery mode to restore your device in these cases:
iTunes doesn't recognize your device or says it's in recovery mode.
You see the Apple logo onscreen for several minutes with no progress bar.
You see the Connect to iTunes screen.
Learn what to do if you see the progress bar onscreen for several minutes.
To put your device into recovery mode, follow these steps:
Turn off your device and leave it off.
Plug in your device's USB cable to a computer with iTunes.
Hold down the Home button on your device as you connect the USB cable. Keep holding down the Home button until you see the Connect to iTunes screen.
When you see this screen, release the Home button. If you don't see this screen, try steps 1 through 3 again.
When your device is connected, iTunes will open. You'll see a message saying that iTunes has detected an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch in recovery mode.
Use iTunes to restore your device. Restoring in recovery mode will erase your device. If you previously synced with iTunes or iCloud, you might be able to restore from your backup.Get more help
Learn what to do if you don't see your device in iTunes for OS X, or in iTunes for Windows.
If you put your device into recovery mode by mistake, restart it. Or you can wait 15 minutes and your device will exit recovery mode by itself.
I hope this information helps ....

  • How to update 2nd gen ipod to install apps?

how do i update 2nd gen ipod to install apps? i have no clue what operating sys this is or where to find it. the version is 4.2.1 if that means anything.
i just got it for my son & he wants to be able to text me w/ this device. any help is appreciated

So can you guys make a update for iPod touch 2g for back grounds and maybe the message app and and a diff lock pattern

Given that it's been two years since the last iOS update for that iPod touch model, it's safe to assume there won't be any more unless someone finds a glaring security hole in it, and even then it will only be to close the hole.
