2.1 update making listening to podcasts even worse

Since updating to 2.1, it seems that the iPod will automatically play the next podcast in the list, which, given that it has always shown podcasts in reverse order, means that it will start to play an older (already listened to) podcast.
I had finally started to accept the fact that podcasts were displayed in the wrong order, but to have it automatically start playing older podcasts really annoys me, and makes no sense whatsoever.

I think continuous play should be the default, but there are other syncing issues, which have existed, which may have or may not have changed with iTunes 8, or 2.1.
I am currently using iTunes 8, iPhone 2.02 (which should be similar enough to iPod Touch for this discussion), and am still using habits from the past year of use. Like the earlier poster, I create smart playlists, putting podcasts in preferred order, and play them through. The Podcast Tab on the iPhone was retired earlier because of it being single play only (dangerous on the road) and the fact that I kept getting podcast I had already heard in that list.
Here are issues under that situation, past experience, which has moded my current behavior.
Placing phone in charging dock or speaker dock rather than attached to mac, the phone thinks it is syncing with iTunes, and resets playcount to zero, for podcasts that have already been played.
If you play the podcasts as a smart playlist, which does allow back to back podcast listening, apparently the playcount in the podcast tab on the phone is not necessarily affected.
Crossfade, which is sometimes accidentally rather than intentionally set, can allow play of one podcast before the playcount bit is flipped for the previous podcast.
You simply are not going to get proper syncing behavior if there are multiple locations for sync preferences, or if a particular behavior (Sync back to Mac) is constantly assumed, in conversation between the Pod or Phone, and iTunes.
I have not tested sync issues (a short podcast or two should work as test) since iTunes 8, and do not disagree that there should be a choice for Single Play or Continuous Play, or that Video Podcasts and Audio Podcasts should be segregated, but I prefer continuous play of multiple podcasts as default, and feel that not enough people use Playlists, smart or dumb, to get around the user interface issues assumed everytime a new method of presenting content is introduced.
That is, It seems stopping or skipping through the continuous play of a list of podcast would be less difficult than having to hunt and peck through a list to to choose the next podcast while driving or such, so I think there may be more cheers than jeers about the new system of playthrough; which may or may not affect syncing issues at all.

  • Updating Partially Listened-To Podcasts

I have a great Podcast I listened to halfway though. I then updated my iPod hoping to get that Podcast show transferred so I could continue to listen to it in the car. It wouldn't transfer over. What do I need to do to get it to transfer?
I have an 80G iPod and use iTunes 7.0.2 with OS X 10.4.7.
    Thank you.

Change the preferences to Update all podcasts.

  • Syncing problems - itunes podcasts cloud clutter: whenever I sync iphone and mac after updating mac, mac adds already listened to podcasts to iphone. This never happened before iOS update with iphone 4S

This was an iOS update that came around iphone 4S that overwrites the phone with what has been updated on the mac. The mac doesn't seem to know I've already listened to something on the phone. It redownloads the podcast to the mac, marking it as unplayed. Then, when I sync the iphone with mac (after updating mac), the mac adds already listened to podcasts to iphone marked as upplayed. The way it used to work was that the itunes on your mac (or PC) acted as a master content controller to whatever was on any of your devices. Ever since the cloud was added, the mac seems to have lost this ability to be a master content controller. Now the cloud clutters up itunes.
Another problem that the cloud, itunes and podcasts is that any deleted from the mac will show up again, with links to the cloud downloaded again. This really clutters things up. It seems like the cloud has become the master controller, even though I don't use it.
Any idea how to solve these problems? Any idea which can be used as a master content controller?

Yes, I don't disagree with the first part. However, I could sync my iphone (to itunes 9.2.1) when I had 4.1 installed from another computer).
I think that I am limited to an old os (10.4.11) on my mac as it is old (pre-intel) and therefore I can't update my OS. If this isn't the case, then an update to my OS could solve the problem. I'll check the requirements of the newer OS now.

  • Listened to podcasts not deleted during sync

    Hi All,
All of a sudden when I sync my iPod Touch to Tunes it no longer will properly sync listened to podcasts. They used to get synced to iTunes and marked as read. Now, they stay marked as unlistened in iTunes (blue dot) and get remarked on the iPod as unlistened to (blue dot) even though I have listened to the podcasts completely through to the end.
It almost appears as though the sync from the direction of iPod to iTunes has stopped functioning and I am only getting syncing in the direction of iTunes to iPod.
I have not changed any settings in iTunes. I have it set to sync unplayed episodes of selected podcasts which has always worked correctly for me in the past. My listened to podcasts used to be deleted from the iPod and only the unlistened/new podcasts would be synced to my iPod.
How do I correct this problem?
    Thanks for your help.
    Sue

I've seen and reported something like this as well. In my case, what I think I've figured out is that the "update podcast" function isn't happening UNLESS there is a new podcast episode downloaded for that subscription. I'm not seeing the heard/watched podcast getting remarked as unheard/unwatched on my iPod. If I go into the podcast list and ctrl-click and manually say "update podcast" it will delete the heard/watched episodes.
I never played much in the settings, but always have download all available and keep unheard podcasts selected. When this problem started I noticed a setting on each podcast regarding "auto delete" that I'd never noticed before. They seem to have been set randomly to "auto delete" or "don't auto delete", but again, I don't remember seeing or setting this before so it could have been something I did. I selected all the podcasts and set them to "auto delete".

  • ITunes no longer syncs partially listened-to podcasts with my iPod

Hey, everyone. Since I downloaded the new iTunes 11, I've run into a problem with the podcasts I listen to. I subscribe to a bunch of podcasts, many of which are quite lengthy. For that reason, I often can't listen to the whole podcast in a single day. However, with the new iTunes, if I sync up my iPod while partway through a podcast, the iPod loses the partially listen-to podcast. It's as if the software assumes that since I've listened to part of it, I don't want it to sync anymore.
This is, of course, not the case. Is there a setting somewhere that I can toggle to make iTunes give me ALL my podcasts, regardless of whether I've listened to part of them (or even all all of them)? In short, I want my podcasts folder in iTunes to match what's on my iPod, not have iTunes make guesses about what I'll want.
    Thanks for any help!

OK, figured this out and wanted to post the solution in case anyone else experiences this.
When you plug in your iPod, iTunes should start up automatically and sync. A button, "iPod," should appear at the top of the iTunes player, just below the search window. Click it (but not the eject symbol on it).
This brings up the iPod control settings. Along the top menu, there will be several submenu options: "Summary," "Music," "Movies," "TV Shows," "Podcasts," etc. Clock "Podcasts."
Here there will be a radio button next to "Sync Podcasts." Make sure that is checked. There is also a radio button next to "Automatically include..." Click that to on as well. Then, if you want iTunes to STOP deleting partially listened-to podcasts, make sure the options in the two drop-down menus say "all" and "all podcasts." Thus, you'll end up with: "Automatically include all episodes of all podcasts."
Hope this helps. The new iTunes is far from user-friendly.

  • Volume too low on 6300, and listening to podcasts

I believe this question has been asked so many times, but is there ANY way to make the allowable volume any higher on headsets? I'd like to listen to music while riding my bicycle and even the sound of the damn tires on the road is louder than the max volume settings.
Only workaround I found is to use a custom equalizer and bump up all frequency bands. Sound then kinda sucks.
Last, I tried listening to podcasts, but the audio playing interface is a joke: try fast forwarding into a 20 min podcast ... you can't! The fast forward button moves 6s forward every 2s. Oh that's fast! NOT!
I wonder how Nokia believes they can ever displace Apple's iPod if they can't even get the most BASIC function right. For frak's sake, my 30 year old cassette Walkman does fast forward right!
I'm FACEPALMing just thinking about those Nokia suits at the next marketing meeting, scheming on how they're going to take over the world of MP3 players and all that, but little do they know that their l33t engineers can't even do FF right!

Thanks for the suggestion JKramer. I should have been more clear about having adjusted all volumes up in the settings screen. Assuming all sound options are located within the "Settings --> Sound & Display" screen, then yes, I have tried changing them. I have also tried changing the option to "use incoming call volume for notifications" under the "ringer volume" settings, after reading that someone had success in improving volume that way.
This issue is not a problem all of the time. It is only an issue when there is an elevated level of background noise, such as driving on the freeway, or having music or a movie playing in the room.
The phone is otherwise excellent! I live and commute in areas of very spotty reception (with all cell providers), and this phone will keep calls and not even have voices garble where my past two phones have consistently dropped calls in at least five problem locations. So far, everything else about it seems to work great!
Maybe some of these phones don't have this issue. Or, maybe the people who say they don't encounter the problem are lucky enough to live in relatively quite environments most of the time. In a quiet house or office, it is certainly loud enough. It just needs to have the option for increased volume when in noisy places. The issue is that its "max volume" settings are not as loud as with other phones.
Searching for something like "Droid X volume" will indeed show many people experiencing these same problems on various forums...

  • In the former version of iTunes there was an option by means of which I could see the most recent podcast even for those I did not subscribe to. Apparently, with 11.2 this option is gone. Any help?

    Hi folks,
in former versions of iTunes I could update the list of available podcasts even for those I did not subscribe to.
Where is this feature in iTunes 11.2?
    Help is appreciated!
    Regards
    Klaus

well nobody bothered to give me a hint on what to do, maybe because the problems with the new version of iTunes are really a lot, there is an enormous amount of people out there that have all sort of different problems including mine  so I have decided to return to the previous version which works fine and wait untill the apple people come up with a decent product ....

  • How do I listen to Podcasts like I would a playlist?

Just recently switched from the PC world to the Mac world and hope I didn't run into my first "gotcha". I am trying to listen to my podcasts on my iPhone as if it were from a playlist but I can figure out how to make this happen.
Previously I would download my ~ 10 podcasts each day via iTunes. The Windows Media Player would automatically recognize the new files and load it into the library. I could easily find the files in the Windows Media Player library if I sorted all tracks by decending date order. Then I would move those files to a playlist and even sort them in an order of my choosing. Sync the playlist to my MP3 player and whala, I have my own radio show for my drive to/from work each day.
iTunes and the iPhone don't seem to want me be able to manage my podcasts that way. I can get over the lack of not being able to dictate the order in which I listen to podcasts. What frustrates me is I have to overtly select a new file to listen to after the last one is finished. I just want to press a couple of buttons then listen to my podcasts (preferably in an order I predetermined) for an hour or two.
Can anyone give me some suggestions on how to listen to a set of podcasts like I would a playlist?

I believe the default setting on Podcasts is Skip When Shuffling. So if you have Shuffle turned on, you have to return to the list each time one podcast ends to select another one to listen to. Check and see if you have shuffle turned on. If so, set it to off, or in iTunes Get Info on the podcasts and uncheck Skip When Shuffling.

  • 1.1.3 listen to podcasts via bluetooth?

Has anyone checked to see if after the 1.1.3 update one can still listen to podcasts using the apple bluetooth headset instead of wired headphones? It’s one of my must haves. Thanks to the brave soul who takes the 30 seconds to check.
    -Craig

Glad goshia got the reference, but podcasting via bluetooth works under 1.1.2, I’m just trying to find out if it works in 1.1.3.
If someone has an apple bluetooth headset and already upgraded their iphone to 1.1.3 (and wants some positive karma) would you please:
-make sure bluetooth headset is paired
-from main page touch phone icon
    -touch voicemail (bottom right)
-touch audio (upper right hand corner)
    -choose iphone bluetooth headset
-then hit home button (only button on front of iphone)
    -touch ipod icon
    -touch podcasts
    -select and play a podcast.
The speaker on the iphone will also play, but the podcast plays through bluetooth headset as well. (or at least it does under 1.1.1 or 1.1.2) This is what I’m trying to ascertain before upgrading to 1.1.3
Please let it play for 1 min. to be sure the connection holds.
I thank you for your help.

How do I get it to just play through all the podcasts that I've downloaded just like my 1st gen?
Group and order your podcasts to a playlist. Then play them from the playlist.

I'm planning on making my own Podcast channel for my world of warcraft videos, how to I get started? I'm using my MacBook, Mac OS X (10.6) for my video editing and using my HP Pavilion, Windows 7, g6t-2000 Notebook PC 64-bit for my video recording.

  • My iMac will not update to 10.6.8 Even after restarting, it will not update.

My iMac will not update to 10.6.8 even after clicking the restart button to update items. How can I update my iMac??

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Sometimes the Software Update version doesn't work properly. If you can't install Mac OS X 10.6.8 from Software Update, install it through the Combo installer > http://support.apple.com/kb/dl1399
The Combo installer allows you to update multiple Macs with a single download. Also, it's safer because it gives less problems than a Software Update version
