2.1 Update - Worse battery life?

So, I updated to 2.1 Friday, and noticed my iPhone getting warm, and the battery was draining really fast. Over the weekend I tried re-restoring it, and still had it drain really fast. Today, I went in an swapped out the phone, and got back to the office and updated to 2.1 again. Almost the same thing, except within a span of maybe 2 hours, I was down to half battery. I used to go almost 2 days without a charge before, and it was never noticeably warm. What's the deal? Any way to downgrade to 2.0.1 or whatever?

I don't think any of the issues have to do much with build week other than actual defective units. Unlike regular cell phones, iPhones can host so many different applications combinations that it's likely those combinations (and especially how they've been installed can lead to problems). Apple for that reason has tried to keep each application in it's own silo. In the end you can't completey really because the main OS still need to know the software is there.
Anyhow, as for battery issues, software definitely can improve battery life. Not only can you make code more efficient and hence take less clock cycles, on a phone you can tune how the phone communicates with the network. This last part is probably where they potentially squeezed more power for some users by allowing the phone to make a connection with a weaker signal. Depending on where people are and how they use their phone, some of the battery tweaks may do nothing. Personally I think for most users the changes have not done all that much. My battery life seems about the same.

After uploading our phones with the latest update, we have noticed that the battery life has deminished considerably.  I now have to charge my phone overnight and two or three times a day. Prior to the update, my battery life lasted me at least a full day.  We have several phones in our office and the ones that have updated (4) now have issue holding a charge/battery life. I really liked this phone and can not believe that you are now going to charge us $79 a battery to fix what is most definately a problem with your latest update.  I know other people outside of our company that are having the same problem. Not to mention when I called AT&T it was confirmed to me that they are hearing the same issue and then some from other customers as well.  Your own people, once I talked to them earlier today, told me they are showing a history of issues that are showing up after the update was put in place. Of course she tried to say, "Maybe the age of the battery and the update both contributed".  Whatever.
I want you all to know how disappointed I am in your company for the handling of this issue.  I always thought "Apple" was the line I didn't have to worry about having any types of issue. And that you all would stand behined your product 100%. Now I am not so sure.
I would love to hear back from your company on how you perceive the issue with all of these phones that prior to the update didn't have any issues and how after the update THEY ARE NOW having issues.  I do not believe this was an issue due to the age of a battery and that was pretty lame to say so.  It was fine and now its not.
Please feel free to contact me and help me figure out a way to pay for all of the batteries that will be needed for our company to contiue doing business as needed.
    Thank you.

  • Why does my iPad 2 get worse battery life with iOS 7???

This new update has way too much white on the screen even when fully dimmed it seems to use more battery than before. Can there be an update to change that?
And in case anybody asks, NO, my battery has been properly taken care of. Charged perfectly each time. So that's not the issue.

Don't know how much the tips in this article http://osxdaily.com/2013/09/19/ios-7-battery-life-fix/ might help but it's worth a look.

  • Mountain Lion 10.8.1 update the battery life get only 5:6 hrs after a full charge.

The battery life got only 5:6 hrs after installing the first update 10.8.1. Strangly the remaining time keep on changing up and down. It show remaining 2 hr, then for sometime show 3:00 hr!!! Don't know why. It looked like the battery life calculator mulfunction.

The remaining time reported is not an actual remaining time of use. It said 6 hr but in a normal use is much less than that. Say around 3:30 hr of real and normal use of my Macbook Pro.

  • 10.4.4 and/or Battery Updater decreases battery life???

This is a cry to the community.
I just returned from the Apple Store where the Genius was unable to provide me with any assistance. The best advice he had was to engender community support for Apple to issue a software fix for my problem. This is my problem:
    I have a 15" aluminum Powerbook, non-high resolution, purchased May, 2005.
A few days ago I installed the 10.4.4 and the Battery Updater software updates, from the Software Updater. I immediately noticed that the hard disk stopped spinning down during periods of inactivity.
Later that night, when I unplugged the power adapter, I was surprised to see that the battery life was now only about 1:20, down from about 3:00 before installing the updates.
Turns out that the Battery Update was only intended for the new battery design shipping with the 15" HR model. There appears to be no way to revert to the previous firmware.
Is anyone else having a similar problem?
    Thanks, Mark

    Hi, Carla--
Thanks for your reply. Sorry to hear about your battery. I try to explain what the numbers mean, but I also think that with a brand-new PowerBook, you have a pretty good case to make to Apple that they owe you better battery run-time. The 3-month rule might be an issue if you didn't purchase AppleCare.
The first number that's relevent is "Capacidad de plena carga (mAh)". Hope English is okay with you. This is a technical measure of how much charge your battery can hold, like the number of gallons of gas that a car's fuel tank can hold. This capacity will decline over time because batteries wear out and hold less total charge as they wear out. "mAh" means milliAmp Hours--milli just means 1/1000. Amp is a measure of current, like a 12 Amp vacuum cleaner. If you run a vacuum for an hour, it uses 12 Amp-Hours of electricity. Your battery hold 4249 milli-Amp-Hours--or 4.249 Amp-Hours--of charge when it's fully charged.
The second number, "Capacidad restante", is the remaining charge that is left. Like when a car's gas tank is 3/4 full. Your's shows 3437 mAh, which is about 3/4 of the full charge. Remember, the full charge is the Capacidad de plena carga.
The third number, "Amperaje", is the amount of electricity that is going in or out of the battery. A negative number means electricity is flowing out--i.e., the laptop is running off of the battery. If it keeps using up the charge at the same rate for an hour, it will have used up that many milliAmp-Hours.
So, your laptop is running off of the battery and using 2898 mAh per hour. About 3000. Now look at the Capacidad de plena carga, again. The maximum charge is about 4200 mAh. Just divide the usage into the capacity, and you'll see that your battery will last about 4200/3000=1.4 hours. And, that's exactly what you said.
Sorry for such a detailed (and boring) post.
But, now the problem is obvious. The software update that we downloaded and installed didn't change the battery capacity. It made the computer use a lot more electricity. For instance, my Powerbook went from using about 1200 mA to about 3500 mA every hour. In other words, since my battery only holds 3800mAh, I go through the full charge in about 3800/3500=1.1 hours.
And, yes, that's exactly what happens.
Thanks, everyone. I'm going to call AppleCare back tomorrow and be a bit more insistent that they address this issue.

  • Significantly worse battery life on Mavericks

I posted this oringally in another thread and was recommended to start a new one.
I have a mid 2012 mbp and upgraded to mavericks the day it was released from ML.
Since then my battery life has been absolutely horrendous. Get around ~2 hours or so on one charge... Pretty dissapointed. I am super busy so I do not have time or energy to format and reinstall mountain lion until christmas time.
Any advice would be great. I went into terminal and disabled indexing following this guide as recommended in another post:
    http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/stopspotlightindex.html
Still nothing. Activity monitor does not show anything significant running in the background either.
I am pretty upset/****** off as the only benefical thing to me in the OS (of all the new features) was apples claims of increased battery life lol.... that didnt really work out.
    Anyways here are my specs:
    Model Name:
    MacBook Pro
      Model Identifier:
    MacBookPro9,1
      Processor Name:
    Intel Core i7
      Processor Speed:
    2.6 GHz
      Number of Processors:

      Total Number of Cores:
    4
      L2 Cache (per Core):
    256 KB
      L3 Cache:
    6 MB
      Memory:
    8 GB
Let me know if anyone needs any additional specs or anything. I have a 1TB hdd installed as well.

The other thread has degenerated into a predictable and unproductive rant-fest that won't help anyone.
Check your Activity Monitor to determine the relative "Energy Impact" of various apps as in the following:
One or more may be obvious, or not.
Some users have reported an SMC reset to be beneficial. Read SMC reset.
Be sure to read the procedure carefully and follow all the steps exactly as written, even if they seem unimportant or trivial.
If your Mac's battery is still draining abnormally fast continue with the following. None of what follows is intended to fix anything, but it will provide the additional information required to advance troubleshooting.
Back up your documents and everything else important to you, not that there is any reason to believe your hard disk may be failing, but the symptoms you describe may presage an impending disk failure, and you should have backups anyway.
Boot OS X Recovery by holding ⌘ and r (two fingers) while you start your Mac. At the Mac OS X Utilities screen, select Disk Utility. Select your startup volume (usually named "Macintosh HD") and click the Repair Disk button. Describe any errors it reports in red.
When it finishes restart your Mac and test again for operation. If it's still not behaving as you expect it should, please post the results of EtreCheck in accordance with the following instructions:
Apple Support Communities contributor etresoft wrote a very useful app to quickly gather certain system information that may help point to a cause of this problem. Go to his website, download and run EtreCheck:
    http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck
Etrecheck will be in your Downloads folder. Open it from there. You may see the following dialog box:
Click Open - etresoft contributes to this forum frequently and can be considered a trustworthy developer.
It will take a moment to run as it collects its data.
Copy and paste its output in a reply.
Do not be concerned about anything that says "Problem" or “failed” or anything else that may appear in red.
EtreCheck was designed to remove any personal information (such as your computer's name and serial numbers) but if you see anything that looks like an email address or any other personal information that should not be divulged to others, please delete or obscure that information when you post the reply.
When you are finished with EtreCheck, quit the program. It occupies very little space, and you can keep it or drag it to the Trash as you wish.
After completing the above please determine if the problems also occur in "Safe Mode":
Safe Mode or "Safe Boot" is a troubleshooting mode that bypasses all third party system extensions and loads only required system components. Read about it: Starting up in Safe Mode
Starting your Mac in Safe Mode will take longer than usual, graphics will not render smoothly, audio is disabled on some Macs, and some programs (iTunes for example) may not work at all.
Merely starting your Mac in Safe Mode is not intended to resolve the problem, it's to observe its performance without certain additional components.
To end Safe Mode restart your Mac normally. Shutdown will take longer as well.

  • 5.0.1 update--even worse battery life

After upgrading to 5.0.1 my iPhone is draining the battery even faster! Anyone else seeing this problem?

    ROFL WHAT AN FAKE-PLACEBO!!!!
Yesterday I applied the Fix 5.0.1.
Do you guys remember the "ANTENNAGATE" Fix where Apple was just  has changed the display for the signal bars strength? ROFL?
They did it same here with battery.
After I intsalled the 5.0.1 full discharge and recharge, I´s able to hold the 100% up to 25 min talking/surfing/emailing. After that it drops to 98% instantly, then it continues dropping so fast I cant believe!!! Apple just changed the display of the battery status....

Hi @zenesa! Welcome to the BlackBerry Support Community Forums!
When did you perform the update?
The phone needs a few days for the OS to settle and sync your data, It's normal for the first few days to shed battery life faster than normal.

  • What is it about the latest update that causes my battery life to be so short?

Since the latest update my battery life has gone from great to horrendous. I used to be able to get through an 8-hour day at work with no issues now I'll get low battery issues after just a few hours. I presume if I do a factory reset I'll loose all my apps and the phone will insist I redo the update. What am I supposed to do?

You should back up any music or videos, documents or files to a PC and then factory reset the phone.  You can either let the reset re-install the apps and app data, or do a clean install to avoid other issues and uncheck those boxes in Back up and Reset menu in Main Settings of the phone.  You can always batch install from the Play Store once you reset or you can go to the Play Store webpage, sign in and restore apps from there as well.  Make sure you are fully charged to 100%.

  • Diminished battery life since 10.6.5 update

I updated my computer with the OS X 10.6.5 update when it came out a week or two ago and since the update, my battery life has gotten incredibly short compared to what it used to be. Normally, without having Airport on, just using Microsoft word, I would easily get 7 hours of battery life. Since the update, with 100% battery I'm getting 3.5 hours at the most and it's down to 75% within 20 to 30 minutes. Oh and I've had the computer for about 3 months. Battery health is already down to 92%
I'm beginning to think I just got a buggy computer because I've been having trackpad issues, and my USB ports don't recognize printers, no matter what I do.
Any idea's on my battery problem? I have searched and searched the internet and have found nothing so it may be an isolated issue.

This sounds exactly like what My 13 inch (mid-2010) MBP is doing.
From day one (about 4 months ago), the battery showed that it was down to 92% with coconut battery? I've never gotten over about 6 hours of battery life; after this latest update to .5, I'm lucky if I get 3.5 hours of battery life.
I've checked the activity monitor and nothing is running the CPU excessively, except when I'm watching something in flash, but even if I block all flash, I still get the same battery life. Also, it's always warm on the bottom (even with flash blocked) and the fan runs all the time, too.
I'm not doing anything differently than I did before the update - just have chrome open all the time.
I swear apple is getting lazy with everything software related lately.

  • Firmware 2.1 update - Battery life

If for no other reason, I'm grateful my batter life is almost double, if not more, than what it was before.
    Thankyou guys...

Right, I should have been more precise. However, the hypothesis was that something was running in the background which drained the battery. The first mark against this hypothesis is that my battery life was fine prior to the 2.1 upgrade, and I didn't change any settings post upgrade. Let's assume that the 2.1 upgrade changed something without my knowledge - so let's go through the items you mentioned:
    - Time and Date: these were set to "Set Automatically" before the upgrade, so maybe Apple has changed the frequency and this is burning battery? In any case, this would still qualify as "worse after upgrade"
    - Calendar events: I have no notifications today, so this likely isn't the problem, unless, again Apple is checking for notifications more frequently, which would again qualify as "worse after upgrade"
    - ipod: this wasn't running in the backgroud, it was off for the full 3:18 between full charge and 20% warning, so likely not responsible
    - phone calls: I had 3 < 2 minute calls on it in the 3:18 between full charge and 20% warning. Likely not responsible, unless 3G is using waaay more juice
So, this still appears to be worse battery life after upgrade.
    -Andy

  • DROID RAZR MAXX HD - Battery Life Halved following Kit-Kat Update

While I like many aspects of the Kit Kat Update, the battery life on my RAZR MAXX HD is half of what it once was under Jelly Bean.
I have tried the same Smart Action settings used previously, when I was getting up to 3 days per charge...and I have turned off all the Smart Actions, but the result is still the same. I am now lucky to get 24 hours out of a charge...under very light usage.
I was also sometimes unable to toggle wifi with the Smart Actions turned on. No such issues as long as the Smart Actions are turned off.
I am hesitant to perform a Factory Reset, but is that my only option?
It does seem as if there should be a 4.4.2 update forthcoming, but I have seen nothing to indicate that it is.

I'm sorry you're having issues with the battery on your device bljusn. I know its frustrating and thanks for trying all those steps to correct the issue. The hard reset would be the last step towards fixing some of the issues with your phone. When you perform the hard reset, make sure you don't restore your apps because they could be causing some of the issues with your phone if their not compatible with the new software. We recommend adding them on one by one to check for issues. Keep us posted.

  • After software/firmware UD, battery life decreased significantly+overheating problems

    Specs of my laptop:
    13 inch late 2011
    2.4 GHz Intel Core i5
    4gb 1333 MHz DDR3
    Mac OSX Lion 10.7.5 (11G63)
Hi, a month or two ago I did a software/firmware update (the thing that automatically pops up once in a while and asks if you want to update). Before the update, I was getting 7-8 hours running safari on a bright level (more than half) which was awesome!
Anyways, after I did the update, my battery life decreased significantly. If my brightness was at half, I got around 2.5 hours MAX. If I ran word and safari it wouldn't even last two hours.
Along with the horrible decrease in battery life, my laptop now gets really hot, really quickly, even if I'm only running safari on a low brightness. Sometimes the fan vibrates becuase it's working so hard...it's NEVER done that before.
I took it into the Apple store 'genius' bar, since I still have the warranty and the person that helped me offered no resolution. He told me that my battery still has life and didn't know why my laptop did this, laughed...and then dismissed me (rude). haha
    system report of the battery:
    Firmware Version:          201
      Hardware Revision:          000a
      Cell Revision:          158
      Charge Information:
      Charge Remaining (mAh):          5281
      Fully Charged:          Yes
      Charging:          No
      Full Charge Capacity (mAh):          5333
      Health Information:
      Cycle Count:          392
      Condition:          Normal
      Battery Installed:          Yes
      Amperage (mA):          0
      Voltage (mV):          12457
I'm not sure what any of this means, but the 'genius' told me my battery still had a lot of life.
I just want the battery life back.
Does anyone know what's going on and how I can fix it?
    Thank you

Hi, thanks for your advice. I just tried resetting and it worked momentarily (battery life improved, fan stopped making so much noise) UNTIL I put my computer to sleep and opened it again... when i first reset, battery life said 5:48. The fan was fine until I put it to sleep (closed the lid and opened five minutes later). Now it's heating up again and the fan is going crazy (making that buzzing noise), battery life is at 2:40 on same display brightness (half). I only have safari open....
Is there anything else I can try to do? Not sure why this happens after I put it to sleep. I don't want to have to reset my computer every single time I open it.
    thanks
EDIT: after posting this, not even five minutes later my battery time dropped to 2:07 and is funneling down as I type.

  • I'll just live with the terrible battery life on my iPhone 5....

IMHO, each new iPhone has worse battery life than the one before.  I've come to expect this.  They claim the battery is better, but in real life use, this is simply not the case.  I've given up trying to figure it out, I'll bring it into the apple store tomorrow, maybe they'll even swap out the phone for me, but I doubt it will make a difference.  The battery is plain awful, but I'm never far away from a charger, whether it's in my car or office.  I've grown used to it at this point.  Nor am I going to do one of the 10,000 suggestions I keep seeing on here and other forums.  Restore as new?  No thanks, it's just the way I want it, I don't want to spend 6 hours loading everything again.  Turn off location services and apps?  What's the point of offering  a feature if you can't just leave it on and use it?  I have everything (well, almost everything) on.  Wifi, brightness all the way up, location services, it's all on.  Why?  I like using them.  That's why I bought the phone in the first place!
So, the bottom line is: I'll live with it.  I'll live with having to charge it a few times a day, I'll live with the fact that it'll never be perfect.  I will go to the genius bar just for the heck of it, there are issues with iCloud not backing up, and wifi not as strong as the 4S, and sometimes the usage and standby times are identical, so perhaps mine is defective, but I doubt it'll make much difference.  Sure, 6.1, or 6.0.1 will be released soon to address these issues, as I'm convinced this is mostly a software issue, but at this point I'm done trying to figure this out.

    Battery life seems short
Click ( www.apple.com/batteries/iphone.html) for tips on how to prolong iPhone's battery life.
Try turning iPhone off and then on again.
Connect iPhone to iTunes and restore iPhone.
If the screen shows a low-battery image, the battery is low on power and needs to charge for up to ten minutes before you can use it.
When charging iPhone, make sure to leave it charging until it is fully charged. You'll know the battery is fully charged when the battery icon in the upper-right corner of the screen looks like this .
Note: When charging using a computer, don't connect iPhone to a keyboard. Also, the computer must be turned on and not in sleep or standby mode. If iPhone is connected to a computer that's not turned on or is in sleep or standby mode, the iPhone battery may drain.
    Cheers,
