2.16 GHz Intel Core Duo/ 2GB ram upgrade ?

Please could someone tell me if I can upgrade my MacBook Pro 2.16 GHz Intel Core Duo/ 2 GB SDRAM running 10.6.8 to Lion as I need it to run some 2015 software ?
IF I can, what are the dangers I must look for and will my laptop then be even slower than it is now?
Thank you very much,

Anyway, you think 2011 is the starting point when searching ?
I apologise for my ignorance and thank you again.
You have no reason to apologize.  We all have to start from the beginning in every endeavor.
I too am very happy with my 2006 MBP however with the introduction of HDTV, the 2006 MBP was not up to the task.  That resulted in the purchase of the 2010 17" MBP because I needed that capability.  Technological change does often require newer and better equipment.  As I have alluded to, I still use the 2006 with great pleasure.
I have also purchased a late 2011 17" MBP which I feel is a slightly better machine than the 2010.  The 2011 has SATA3 internal interface whereas the 2010 has SATA2.  What this means is that the 2011 MBP can utilize the full potential of current SSDs whereas the 2010 cannot.  Do not misunderstand, an SSD in a 2010 will still be a significant performance enhancement.  Also a 2011 MBP will accept up to 16GB RAM (also at 1600 MHz) whereas the 2010 can only utilize 8GB RAM (the 2010 13' model being an exception).  The 2011 MBPs also have slightly better GPUs than the 2010.
On the plus side for the 2010 MBP, it is more energy efficient than the 2011.  In other words, longer battery run time.
The 2011 MBP has a quadcore CPU which is not the great advance that some may lead you to believe.  It shines only when a given application can utilize the parallel processing that it affords.  Though not as critical, do opt for the fastest CPU available if there is a choice.
I like the 17" displays in the newer MBPs  (late 2008 and newer) due to the 1980 x 1200 resolution.  That is compatible with HDTV.  The retina display are nice, but not nice enough to warrant my purchase of a 15" model.
Both my 2010 and late 2011 MBPs will run any applications that a newer MBP will, but perhaps not quite as fast.  Neither is obsolete, yet.
Ciao.

I have an old imac 1.83 GHz Intel Core Duo, that still runs on OS X 10.4.11, can I upgrade to Mountain X lion? Is my Iphone with Ios6 will work on it?

1. No.
2. Yes. Phone the online Apple Store, order a Mac OS X 10.6 DVD, install it, and run Software Update.

• Will my Macbook 13" late 2006 take the RAM from a Macbook Pro 13" 2.4 Ghz Intel Core Duo?

I have a macbook 13" late 2006 and i found it was cheaper to buy a 13" Macbook Pro 2.4 Ghz Intel Core Duo Ram, I was just wondering if the ram out of the pro model will fit my older model?

Some basic guesses from http://www.everymac.com
MacBook 13" Late 2006 is a MacBook2,1 and that uses PC2-5300 DDR2 667 MHz ram.
MacBook Pro 13" did not use 2.4 GHz but the first of the 13" models was the MacBook Pro7,1 and that uses PC3-8500 DDR3 1066 MHz ram.
Those are not compatible and cannot be used interchangeably.

• My Imac 2.0 GHz Intel Core Duo keeps powering off

Hi all,
I have a 20inch 2.0 GHz Intel Core Duo (Imac 4.1), Over the last few weeks the Mac would just power off on the odd occasion when using Apeture, I put this down to being the just overworked for processing picture. This seems to have been getting worse and kept occurring more and more often. Light Internet browsing was fine..
I decided after some time to replace the 2gb memory i had to see if that would fix the issue, this seemed to work for a few days then the same issues returned.
I now seeing this issue occured just by opening Safari and decided to rebuild the Imac, I completed the Snowleopard install and all seemed ok for a day then it re-occurred again and seemed to be worse, I then removed the 2gb memory and just kept with the 512mb as when bought... Still it keeps powering off. I have moved to different power sockets and still see the same issues.
Please note in order to power the Imac backup up I have to leave the power out for about 20-30 minutes, If i leave the power plugged in it never boots backup up.
I now decided to even revert back to Lion OS, but it just powers off during the install...
I thinking it sounds like a Power supply issue but would like confirmation before I take it to a repair shop..
cheers
Dan.

As old as your iMac is, have you cleaned out the dust? Dust buildup can lead to over heating issues. Remove any and all things plugged into it including the power cord, Remove the RAM access grille. Vacuum all openings starting with the RAM access area (air intake). Vacuum all ports and plugs, DVD slot and the opening across the top of the rear of the body. Blow compressed air through all your openings and vacuum again to remove any dust you loosend. Reinstall the RAM grille. Plug in the keyboard and mouse if not blue tooth. Insert power cord...
You are now in a perfect position to do a
SMC RESET
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and ALL peripherals.
Wait 15 seconds.
Attach the computers power cable.
Wait another 5 seconds and press the power button to turn on the computer.
It is the 5 second timing that initiates the reset.

• Is installation on 2.16 GHz Intel Core Duo (MacBook Pro)really not possible and why?

I would like to buy OS X Lion and install it on my MacBook Pro with 2.16 GHz Intel Core Duo, but this processor is not in the list of the specifications (Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7 or Xeon processor).
Is it really true that I can't install Lion on my Mac? If so, what is the reason?

It has to be a Core 2 Duo. Those are the requirements for Lion.
Requires a newer Mac.
Lion requires an Intel-based Mac with a Core 2 Duo, i3, i5, i7 or Xeon processor and 2GB of RAM.

• I have a mac book pro, 2006 with an 2.16 GHz Intel Core Duo processor, can I update to Lion? to use icloud.

Apple keep telling me I need to update to icloud but I'm not sure if Lion will work on my Mac. I've upgraded to snow leopard which seems to have knackered my .me or .mac account (whatever it's called now), so I don't seem to have any option but to upgrade to Lion if I every want to see my emails again.
Apple say I must have a Intel Core 2 processor for Lion to work...... at least I think that's what they say.
I have a mac book pro, 2006 with an 2.16 GHz Intel Core Duo processor, can I update to Lion?

Lion System Requirements
Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor
2GB of memory
OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
7GB of available space
Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.
If you have a Core Duo model then you cannot upgrade to Lion. You can upgrade to Snow Leopard, but iCloud is not available for Snow Leopard.
Open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. Look for the Model ID in the displayed information. If you have a MacBookPro 2,1 or later then you have a Core 2 Duo model and can upgrade to Lion.

Can I use a 2 gig single module DIMM in a 2.16 ghz Intel Core Duo?
Ramjet says,
"2Gig Single Module: The 2Gig Single module can only be used in the

maximum is 3Gigs with the installation of one 2Gig SO-DIMM, and one
1Gig SO-DIMM. If you install two 2Gig SO-DIMMs, OSX will register
4Gigs, but will only be able to use 3Gigs. In the Core2, you may
install the 2Gig SO-DIMM into either slot."
Other sites say they are compatible. What is the true poop?
TIA,

When we tried to put a 2gig stick into a regular Duo unit the Pro would not even work. Nothing wrong with the RAM though since it ran fine in out 2Duo iMacs.

I have a macbook pro with a 2.16 Ghz Intel core Duo processor. Can I install the iOS 5 software?

iOS 5 is for iDevices, not OS X. Your iDevice would only require 10.5.8 or later. If you have a Mac with a Core Duo processor then you cannot install Lion but you can install Snow Leopard provided you have at least 1 GB of RAM installed.

• 21.5" 2.4 ghz Intel core duo with 4 GB memory iMac w/ OS X 10.5.8

my 2008 21.5" 2.4 ghz Intel core duo with 4 GB memory iMac is running OS X 10.5.8 and has recently started over heating and locking up .... even with applications that it has never had problems with before .... I don't think it's capable of being upgraded any further, right? can I upgrade the graphics card or is that even worth it?

Your tems are fine, nothing at all to worry about. One thing you can do is shut down the computer, remove the RAM plate cover on the bottom and vacuum out the air intake. As for the spinning beach balls that isn't a freeze it means a process is busy. You can run Activity Monitor (Applications - Utilities - Activity Monitor) and when you begin getting SBBOD look in AM and see if you see any processes using a large %CPU and also click the System Memory tab and look to see how much FREE RAM is available at that point in time. As a general rule of thumb OS X likes to have 500MB or more of FREE RAM, if you see it's at or below 500MB then a RAM upgrade is needed or you need to reduce the amount of open windows. The graphic will look similar to:
Also I'd strongly recommend carefully reading the XLab's Spinning Beach Ball of Death article. It's an excellent guide on how to trouble shoot spinning beach ball issues.

• I am running 10.6.8 but can't upgrade to Lion. 1.83 GHz Intel Core Duo processor 1.83 GB memory. What should I do?

My MacBook software is 10.6.8 but I can't upgrade to Lion. 1.83 GHz Intel Core Duo with 2GB memory. What to do?

Lion/101.7 System requirements
        •    x86-64 processor (Macs with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Intel Core i3, Intel Core i5, Intel Core i7, or Xeon processor.)
        •    At least 2GB of memory, (I say 4GB)
        •    Latest version of Mac OS X Snow Leopard (10.6.8), with the Mac App Store installed
        •    At least 4GB of disk space for downloading, (I say 40GB at least)
Like Snow Leopard, Lion does not support PowerPC-based Macs (e.g., Power Macs, PowerBooks, iBooks, iMacs (G3-G5), eMacs).
Lion also does not support 32-bit Intel Core Duo or Core Solo based Macs. Rosetta is no longer available in Lion, which means Lion no longer supports PowerPC applications.

My I wonder if anyone on here could help me.
My 27' 2.4 GHz Intel Core i7, 12GB RAM iMac keeps restarting all the time. It's been happening for months now but has got worse and worse. It started when I was using programmes like adobe Pr & Ae but now it happens when I have only have safari or other small apps open.
What happens is the screen freezes, I can hear a clicking should and then the machine just restarts all of a sudden.
I get the message: 'Your computer was restarted because of a problem. Click report to see more detailed information and send a report to Apple' which I have done ever time for about 50+ times now in total. The 'problem details and system configuration' states the below:

I use my iMac daily for work and it happens from 4-10 times a day depending on what applications i'm using. More if I'm trying to render a video. It is really furstrating and keeps me from doing any work at all, I can't keep working like this but I have no choise. I really can't be without my computer for very long as I use it to do everything and I do not have another. Also I have all my files on the hard drive. I have bought a Seagate external HD to back up my files onto so I can make a genus bar appointment but everytime I run time machine or try to copy any of my files over to the external HD the machine restarts and disrupts the file transfer. So I can't even back up my files which are really important to me. I even had to retype this whole message becuase my imac restarted while I was fulling in this question.
What is worse is that I bought the extra warrenty (Apple Care) which is due to expire sometime in March 2014 I'm unsure of the date. Might have expired already I don't know. So I need to get this fixed ASAP.
Extra information on the machine:
iMac
27-inch, Mid 2011
Processor  3.4 GHz Intel Core i7
Memory  12 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
Graphics  AMD Radeon HD 6970M 2048 MB
Software  OS X 10.9.2 (13C64)
Can anyone see from the information I have given about what could be wrong with my machine?
Any help or assistance would be much appriciated.
Thanks,
James

Hi.  I am currently having the same issue on my 2011 27"  3.1 GHz i5  with 12 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
For the last couple of months I have been experiencing random restarts, power offs and so on.  I have already had this escalated and had my machine taken into Apple to run a Hardware test.  They redid the newest OSX version in store and ran the AHT for an hour and got no results.  The Genius Bar were asked by Apple Canada to run an all night test.  According to Apple they ran the test for 4 hours and got nothing.  I was then told to take the machine home and run it with just the memory that was original in the machine.  I stressed tested the video card with a benchmark tool called Heaven for 2 hours.  90C was the temp and no failure.  I did a Terminal "Yes" loop for a couple of hours and no failure on the CPU.  I ran the Apple Hardware Test for 11 minutes and this is the result.
I also have a video of what happened after I restarted the test after about a 5 minute cooldown period.  20 minutes into the test the Imac stalled and made 3 long beeps over and over again like an alarm with a long pause between.  I took the memory out of the DIMM 0 & 1 slots and replaced them in the 2&3 slots rand the test and got nothing after 2 hours.  I put the memory back in the original spot and ran it again and got no results.  Apple contacted the "Genius" techs and they informed them that I had fixed the problem and everything should be good now.  I was also told to go ahead and transfer back over my Time Machine Backup.  Since this all happened I have had the Imac restart 2 times in the last almost 2 weeks and today got this error message

I would also like to add that The Second High Level tech I spoke to told me to use a program to take an image of what my computer was doing when the fresh install of Mavericks was installed and then again after the Time Machine restore.  I sent both and have had no response back. The "Engineers of Apple" would be taking a look at those files. This is what I was told anyway's.
So I would like any advise because Apple hasn't been too helpful.  I haven't heard anything back at all. Its been a little while.  This seems that it could be an issue. James McConville seems to be having the same issue and I have read quite a few others before I saw this post from yesterday.
