2.2 and call proximity sensor

Is anyone else having an issue with the dial pad when you receive a call?  Before the update, when a call came in and was up to my face the dial pad/screen was disabled, as soon as I moved it away from my face to enter VM password or something the dial pad came up (using what I believe is the built in proximity sensor).  Since the upgrade, my face seems to be inadvertently pressing numbers on the dial pad.  Maybe I am missing a setting?  Maybe its a quirk not addressed properly in the upgrade?

No problems with proximity sensor with my droid x 2.2 either. Why don't you simply disable keypad during a call? if you need to impute r numbers, just activate it. again.

    hi,

I purchaged it before one month onl. So i wont understand how it comes. Please help me. I am waiting for you reply.

"Your face is so ugly, it broke your phone!" Ha ha. Get it? How I was joking there? About your iPhone not working correctly after... <sigh>
But seriously, you said the situation only happens when you have been on a long call, so maybe the iPhone is just autolockng?

  • Magnetic Carry Case + Proximity Sensor Problem

I noticed a problem with magnetic carry case and the proximity sensor being disabled in 10.1 for my Z10 STL100-3 as well as my wife's STL100-1.
When removing the phone from the case, to make or answer a call, the sensor is disabled. Thus, you easily touch the keys with your face. When NOT using the magnetic carry case, no issue. Seems like the magnetic sensor was disabling the proximity sensor.
Now, using 10.2, it appears the problem has been resolved. But will monitor over the next few days.

Who installed the new screen? You should take the phone back to them and have them fix it.

  • Proximity Sensor problem after update. Lumia 710

  • What changed in proximity sensor software

For those who don't follow the HUGE thread about the proximity sensor, here is what I've found changed with 4.2.1 and the proximity sensor.
I ran three different tests and one had a HUGE change - entirely repeatable. The other two may or may not have a small change which would help people.
Two of these tests can be seen for reference here:
    http://picturehawaii.blogspot.com/201009_01archive.html
The big change was in test #6 where you VERY slowly lower a card over the sensor. With 4.1, the screen would first turn off around 2 inches, but as you continued to lower the card, it would come back on around 3/4 inch and continue to flash on and off down to 1/4 inch. I've even gotten it as low as 1/8 inch!
Running the same test with 4.2.1, it still went off about the same initial distance, but even after 5-6 tests, it didn't come back on as I continued to lower the card. Same hardware so it seems to be a software change.
This isn't something that would compare to a real world situation, but it does show something has changed.
I ran another test (test #3). This was harder to quantify since I could still get the distance down to 1/4 inch or a hair less. However, my impression was that it took more effort to get it down that low. Sorry, but there is no way I could test consistently enough by hand to be sure.
But, if it does take more effort, remember that moving the phone further away for 2-3 seconds resets the distance and this change would mean more time for someone to just happen to move it in a way that resets it - then the process has to start all over again.
    Assuming my impression is correct!
My third test is similar to #3 on the video. But in this case, I pretty quickly move the card down close to the sensor to mimic putting the phone up to your ear fairly quickly. After that, all movements are very slow - I move it up to see where it comes on, then down till it turns off as slowly as I can. I simply keep reversing direction to see how low I can get the screen to still be on. I was able to get about the same distance as with 4.1, but, again, I had the feeling it was taking longer to get it that low.
Starting from the bottom and moving up slowly has the screen initially come on around 3/4 inch or a hair more. New version may be a sliver higher, but, again, I can't test that closely by hand - especially the way my hand shakes!
In short, there is certainly one change in how the proximity sensor is programed. There may be others, but I can't tell for sure.
I think it is safe to say that any improvement - whether in distance or how much effort it takes to reach a low distance - will mean a significant number of people will avoid or greatly reduce their problems.
I'll probably be testing periodically to see if that big change continues. We've all seen people before who did an upgrade (or restore) and had things get better only to later report the problem returned!

Yep, I'm still on this topic - and still the person who can back up their comments with actual video tests that are consistently repeatable.
Certainly there is a hardware component, but it seems quite clear that software is involved. That's where testing comes in.
But please, feel free to explain to me the following based strictly on hardware:
    1. Why before 4.1, the distance most people were finding the screen would first turn off was less than after 4.1.
    2. Why do people report seeing the sensor glowing red (higher power) after 4.1?
    3. Why is it that I could consistently get a 4.1 phone to light up using test #6 all the way down to 1/8 or 1/4 inch, but haven't been able to do it even once with 4.2.1?
I'd love to know what changed in my HARDWARE during this time.
Now, I can't explain why the software does what it does, but it is clearly doing something that was changed more than once. Sometimes software doesn't do what was planned.
If you feel better about posts that just say, "My sensor doesn't work" and then goes on to claim it is hardware (or whatever you want), fine. I prefer to gather as much info as I can, hopefully from other posters to see what kind of consistency (and variation) we get. It helps to narrow things down.

  • Just replaced proximity sensor - now green shading?

    Hello all,
Working on an iPhone 4S.  The power (sleep) button has been dead for some time.  No more click and the button stayed depressed (down, not sad!)
Ordered a tool kit and new proximity sensor cable.  Took the phone apart only to realize the company had sent a cable for a iPhone 4.  Contacted company in order to get correct cable.  In the mean time, I put the phone back together.  Upon the initial boot up, I noticed a gray horizontal stripe across the apple logo.  When the phone came on, the color was very faded and the icons were kind of fuzzy.  By that evening, the color came back and by the next day, all was back to normal.  I did notice that I could squeeze the phone and make the color change from normal to faded.
Received new (correct) cable and installed it.  Install went fine and it is very nice to have my power button back!  Booted the phone up and everything looked great. About three hours later, I noticed a green glow around objects on my wallpaper.  Not dead pixels, just like a green glow that follows the shape of the object.  If I go to Safari or my photos, the glow again follows the edges of the objects.  Take a photo and it shows up on my photo stream on my iPad and it's perfect.
All of my connections are tight.  I did have to move ribbon cables in order to replace the damaged component.  I was careful not to stretch them but I obviously goofed up somewhere.
    Any thoughts from the community?
    Thanks!

I answered your post because some "users" do repair or upgrade Apple hardware despite your negative attitude.
Interestingly,  Apple doesn't make any of the parts for these phones, so all of the parts are made by third parties (sacrelige I know). Some of these third parties that sell the parts to Apple for their production also sell these parts in the open market for "unauthorized" repair people.
Still, your point is good. When you buy Apple, you really buy Apple's quality control, which is unequaled in my (substantial) experience.
If you buy from a reputable vendor, iPhone repair parts are high quality, they generally work, and they are warrenteed too.
I am an old time Apple user (my first machine was an Apple ][ +) and I have pretty much always had to violate the warranty (it's a compulsiion I know).
They said you couldn't upgrade the RAM in the "new" Mac also (HA!).

    Hi folks,
i have an apple IPhone4. I am experiencing certain problem with my iphone4. The problems are as follows a. my ear piece and proximity sensor is not working while making a call. 2. It cannot reproduce sound without earphone but rings normally if gets any call.
Can any one help me in this regard??

Try to reset the phone by holding the sleep and home button for about 10sec, until the Apple logo comes back again. You will not lose data by resetting, but it can cure some glitches after installing new software or apps.

I wish that were so. Then they would probably be taking prompter action. But the return rate three weeks in was substantially lower than most handsets at launch and only a quarter that of the 3GS. I suspect the return rate has remained incredibly low and the figures are further slewed down the way by the worldwide distribution that is now in the tens of millions.
At 5% return rate on a product I understand that becomes a 'significant event' that becomes declarable to shareholders, so we know they haven't reached that milestone yet.
a disclosable event is not triggered by a specific stock return level unless apple has entered into covenants re same. Suggest you take a look at sec rules for more info
Still, unless you have insider knowledge, you don't know Apple's buying them back at record numbers. You may be guessing, but you likely don't have proof....
agree. I don't have any proof whatsoever, just a strong gut feeling that all is very much not as rosy in cupertino as it might seem.
For a company whose culture is steeped in phreakery, apple is showing an amazing inability to exert control.

I find it completely ludicrous that Apple can interject on this thread and say it's received too many posts and has to be shut down and a "new" thread started. Really now? Seriously? Couldn't they also simply pop in and post 'hi guys, we hear you and are working on it' ...or something to that effect? That's my main complaint really is the deafening silence. What they're basically telling us is to complain all we want, if we don't like the phone then return it for a refund ...that is if you still have your original defective phone, for all you that already swapped phones, you're beat and are stuck with our mistake for the next 2 years when you'll be upgrade eligible again. ...WOW, thanks for the statement without technically releasing one. ...I think we're all left in the dark because Apple really doesn't know what is going on with the sensor, they can't and or won't release a statement without getting the facts straight. ...but we all know one fact is straight...the sensor is dysfunctional and that alone deserves an acknowledgement. How are we to have faith in Apple to fix the issue when we're left to believe they don't think there is one.
...btw update on "my fix" ...deleting all your photos and putting the phone in your arm pit and then under your pillow is only a temporary solution, for mine sensor is on the fritz again. ...shaking my head, if only this were
    funny.

  • Issue with Proximity Sensor during calls

I'm having an issue with the Proximity Sensor not properly detecting when i'm holding my phone to my ear. I can confirm that the iPhone sensor is working by covering it with my finger, but when held to my face, the screen blinks as if it cannot decide to disable the screen or enable it. It results on me hanging up, putting calls on mute, and dialing numbers accidentally while i'm on the phone. This occurs on 90% of my calls. Is anyone else experiencing this issue. I would like to confirm whether this is a software issue (Proximity Sensor sensitivity too low) or a design issue (sensor now placed towards the end of the phone).
Macbook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.4)

    Hi there bobby adapa,
You may find the troubleshooting steps in the article below helpful.
    iPhone: Hardware troubleshooting
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts2802
Screen won't lock or go black when answering calls
Verify mute or speaker have not been activated, just prior to placing your ear over the receiver.
While on a call hold your hand over the top third of the display, and verify that the screen is locked or goes to sleep.
Try turning iPhone off and then on again.

My issue is still not resolved. What do I do next?

  • Shouldn't the proximity sensor disable the screen during call w/headphones?

I've noticed that the proximity sensor does not automatically disable the touchscreen when I'm on a call if I have the headphones plugged in.Is this the case for others as well? Since I keep my 3GS in my pocket during these calls, what tends to happen is that the "end call" (or whatever it is called) button gets pressed from my movements and my call terminates at some point.
    Does this make sense?

I am experiencing the same issue. This has not been fixed as of 7.0.3. It's a very annoying issue since it completely breaks the "hands-free" benefit of using siri. Now I always have to take the phone out of my pocket, voice dial, turn the screen off, and put the phone back in my pocket. very hard to do on a bike.

  • I recieve my Iphone 4s a few days ago and it appears that the proximity sensor only works intermittantly

My phone has hung up several times, put my call on hold, open facetime.  It appears the proximity sensor is not working all the time.  I've tested it by holding my finger over the sensor and the screen goes dark, but I've had several problems while holding to my ear on calls.

Apple does not repair iPhones, but will replace the entire iPhone for a flat fee; see the Repair Pricing section here:
    http://www.apple.com/support/iphone/service/faq/
Damage is not covered under the warranty unless you purchased AppleCare+ when you purchased your iPhone
There are independent iPhone repair services that may be able to replace the screen for less. Do a web search for "iPhone repair".
