2.20 GB RAM usable by windows 7 out of 8GB RAM

I recently installed Windows 7 Professional 32bits on my Macbook Pro using Boot camp. My macbook comes with 8gb RAM. However i just noticed that only 2.20gb of this is usable by Windows. Can anyone educate me why this is so and how i can increase it?

The appropriate action is to install 64bit Windows, not permanently restrict the installation to less than half of the currently available Ram!!

Yes you can add RAM to fill up those other 2 slots. Buy it from Crucial.com. It does not have to be the same brand but it has to be the same specs. Crucial will sell you the same spec RAM as what is in there already.

If there is not enough RAM, OSX will use space on the disk drive, so the amount of RAM should not limit the file size an application can handle, but speed will be reduced. 32-bit addressing can restrict the use of huge files, but there are ways that applications can get around it (at the expense of lower speed).
If After Effects has a file size limit, extra RAM will not help A later version (maybe using 64-bit mode) may handle larger files. 64-bit applications can be written to run in Tiger on G5s, but will be easier to write when Leopard is released.
You may be able to use some other application, such as Photo Shop, or Graphics Converter, to extract part of the TGA file, or reduce its size by changing its resolution, so you can use the result in After Effects.

Is my RAM dead? Or is my user RAM slot dead? That is the question!

So I have an IBook G4 1.42 with a 1 gig ram stick in the "user" slot.
Over the past few weeks the performance has slowed and the System Profiler shows that the user slot is now "empty," despite the fact the RAM is still there. Is there any way to tell if the problem is with the RAM stick or with the actual user slot? I would hate to buy more RAM only to find out that the RAM I have is OK, and the slot is the problem.
System Profiler says:

I was thinking maybe I will just get my $$ back and go back to the Fujitsu drive that came with the Mac book till my iPhoto and iTunes libs get huge and then look at a larger driver then.
Or get a diff brand... this was a Western Digital - perhaps they are not the best out there.

8gb ram worth it for 32bit Vista?

I have huge files that are painfully slow to work with -ie 15,000 by 10,000 pixels, 1 - 1.5GB in size. I have the 32bit version of Vista, 4gb ram.
If I upgraded to 8gb ram, would it really be worth it? I know the faq says that PS can somehow utilize this extra ram, but would PS be "as snappy" as when it has enough ram in the first place? If actions that take 15 minutes with these files would only take as long as the ones with my 600MB files, then I would do probably it. Do u think this would this be a major performance upgrade or just a tiny one?

Go with x64 vista first then try the file again ( in a 64 bit environment you can set PS to use just over 3gb ) then if you need more RAM then get 8GB.
But, like Freeagent said, x64 bit is the only way you will be able to use 8gb.
I work with massive files ( 45000 x 12000 pixels @250ppi ) and I need 16gb to keep things in check.....with vista ( search index, prefetch/superfetch etc disabled), photoshop and the image loaded, Vista will take up 12-14gb of RAM.
So the more ram the better IMO.
You will see improvements in performance with 8gb in PS. One thing I have noticed since upgrading to 16gb is that save times are dramatically faster - what would normally take 15 mins to save now takes between 2 to 5 mins.
Even with 16gb PS still goes to the scratch disk so a fast dedicated disk ( pref Raid 0 or 10k / 15k drive) is good advice.

2,2 GB RAM usable out of 4 - iMac

Lion can use almost 4 GB by itself for the OS, as BDAqua mentions above. With only 4 GB of RAM installed in your iMac you may be throttling the system speed and performance. I would recommend that you consider visiting a site such as:

and let that OWC site recommend the amount of RAM that your model of Imac is capable of installing. RAM is very cheap these days, OWC is highly rated by Users in these Forums, and any increase in the amount of RAM you can use will help speed up your system noticeably; the more RAM, the faster you go.

Why is only 2.73 Gb of RAM usable on a 4 Gb RAM MacBook on Windows 7 32 bit

I understand that with the video card (which is 256 mb of dedicated RAM on this model) I should have ~3GB of RAM usable on 32 bit version of windows 7. (Yes it is legal, which seems to be the first question in this discussion)
Is there something else in the equation that I am missing?
1. 32-bit only applies to RAM over 4 gb and since this is bootcamp, it is not running another operating system.
2. Unless there is something within the hardware of my macbook that is only able to use 3 Gb I apologize for my ignorance, it's not really a serious issue but I could almost swear that I had more memory usable on my windows 7 partition at one point in time.

How is Windows installed, VM or Bootcamp?
64 bit Windows will use all your computer's ram if installed using Bootcamp.
Windows will share your ram with OSx if installed using a VM.
Graphics uses some of your ram.

Windows 7 64bit 4gb RAM yet only 2.46 usable

Ive read other posts on this, but they all seemed to be people running 32bit OS's.
Ive got 4gb RAM installed, and Windows sees this. I upgraded to Windows 7 64bit and at the start it was using the full 4gb. Something has changed in the last week and it only shows as 2.46 gb usable and 4gb installed. If i disable detection in the bios and use discrete. it goes up to 2.9gb
Can anyone help me as there is 1.5gb being wasted somewhere. I run with switchable graphics set to high performance.

The T500 will for sure show 2.46GB if you're running switchable graphics and a 32-bit OS.
The key point is verifying that the system is indeed 64-bit.

Installed 8GB in DV6-2190 laptop but only seeing 3.99 usable - using Windows 7 64-bit

Hi there ... I have a HP DV6-2190 laptop, running Windows 7 Professional 64-bit, and have installed 8GB of RAM. The BIOS sees this RAM just fine, as does a bootable Linux distro. However, in Windows, I am only seeing 3.99 usable. Since Resmon shows that the first 4GB are hardware reserved, does this mean that that 4GB of RAM is completely consumed by the video card? Is there a way to get it use a bit less and give my programs a bit more? I do end up running out of memory when using music editing programs and VST hosts, such as Cubase.

Problems deploying Windows 7 x64 computers with more than 8GB RAM

SCCM 2012 R2 CU1

We have a weird problem after upgrading from SP1 to R2 CU1. We have built a Windows 7 64 bit image with the latest updates (currently September 2014 updates). It deploys fine to all computers. But after some days – don’t know exactly – guess after 4-7 days
- we start getting errors on computers with more than 8 GB of RAM. The errors just start out of the blue. We didn't change TS, image or driver package.
The error shows in 3 different ways – depending of the computer model.
1) BSOD – STOP 0x000000F4. Disk error.
2) Task Sequence error 0x87D00269 when installing the first Application in TS. The error seems to have something to do with Management Point not found.
3) Task Sequence simply stops after installing CMclient. No errors - it simply stops.
For instance we get the BSOD on the Lenovo ThinkCentre M93p. But on the ThinkCentre M83 we get the TS error 0x87D00269. M93p and M83 uses the same driver package. They consequently fail every time after the error has begun. If we reduce (remove physically)
the memory to max. 8GB of RAM, they successfully run the Task Sequence. We get the above errors on both Lenovo and HP machines with more than 8GB.
I made a copy of the production TS and started testing. I created a new driver package for M93p/M83. It contains only the NIC drivers. Now M93p an M83 successfully finishes the TS. Adding sata or chipset or MEI/SOL drivers to the package I get the 0x87D00269
error on both m93p and M83. At least not the BSOD on the M93p ;-)
Tried setting SMSTSMPListRequestTimeout to 180 in the TS. Also tried putting in a 5 minute break before installing the first Application in the TS. Also tried putting in SMSMP=mp1.mydomain in the installation properties for the CMclient. It is still
the same problem.
Investigating the smsts.log on a computer with the 0x87D00269 error.

Investegating the 0x87D00269 error on the siteservers Status Messages Queries is weird.
Install Static Applications failed, hr=0x87d00269. The operating system reported error 617: You have attempted to change your password to one that you have used in the past. The policy of your user account does not allow this. Please select a password that
you have not previously used.
Hopefully this is a bug in translating the errorcodes? Just to be sure I checked all the SCCM serviceaccounts and none of them have expired passwords. And again why only on computers with more than 8GB RAM.
Anyone else had problems rolling computers with more than 8GB og RAM?
Why does this happens after a few days? To begin with, it runs just perfect and then starts failing on all machines with more than 8GB. Without a change in TS, image and driverpackage. We have seen this pattern for the last 3 month after
updating our image with the latest Windows Updates. It all started after updating from SP1 to R2 CU1.
Why does it only affect machines with more than 8GB RAM?
How to get rid of the 0x87D00269 error?
Seems to be somehow related to driver installation mechanism in SCCM in combination with Windows 7 64 bit, +8GB RAM and SCCM 2012 R2 CU1 or perhaps just R2.
Any help or hints would be appreciated!

We have the same workaround, using a x64 boot image resolved all our issues with WinPE 5.0.

No updates from Microsoft, they are still looking through the logs, but we have updated our boot images and all is well now. Our case it still open with Microsoft, they are researching the logs.

Upgraded to 8GB RAM - Windows 7 64-Bit Not Using All of It

I just upgraded my 3.02GHz MacbookPro to 8GB RAM and in both Mac and Windows (64-Bit) it acknowledges that I have 8GB installed. However in Windows 7's task manager it shows:
Total Physical Memory 8167MB
Cached 4500MB
Available 4557MB
Free 91MB
and it shows I'm only using 3.51GB....Why only 91MB free? In Adobe Illustrator I am getting not enough RAM errors so it seems like Windows 7 is tapping out at the old 4GB ceiling. Anyone know if this is a setting that is easily modified so I can use all 8GB?

HP dv6-6c75sa Windows 7 64-bit RAM upgrade

I am running an HP dv6-6c75sa on Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit, with an Intel Core i3-2350M processor. My installed software is a combination of 32- and 64- bit compatible.
When I purchased the computer, I installed a RAM upgrade which took the total onboard RAM to 8GB. Due to a system issue which I cannot now recall, a search query informed me that my system would only recognise 6GB of what I had installed.
My computer is now 2 years old, and to extend its lifespan, and help it keep up with a recent software install which it cannot seem to cope with (Native Instruments Traktor 2, and Kontrol S4; I would like to make a new RAM upgrade.
I think that the reason only 6GB of my 8GB installed was recognised, may have had something to do with the 32- vs. the 64-bit system, but I can't be sure.
I know that the maximum RAM for Windows 7 Home Premium is 16GB. What changes could I make now that would allow my system to work at or near 16GB of RAM capacity?
Also, where I have a mishmash of 32- and 64-bit software, on a clean install running 64-bit, I believe that I should be able to get all of my software running again. Are there any traps I should look out for that may hamper this.
Do you think that my processor is the thing that is limiting my RAM capacity?
I would appreciate your input.

Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forums and Welcome. I have looked into your issue about your HP Pavilion dv6-6c75sa Notebook and concerns with system recovery.
Here is a document on performing a system recovery. Here is a document on troubleshooting issues with performing a system recovery.
Always back up important information before attempting a recovery.
This system supports up to 8 GB DDR3 10600 1333-MHz and I would recommend 2- 4s. Here is a link to the manual page 60 for the memory. If the specs are correct for your memory I would reseat it.
Use the built-in Windows System Information utility to view information on Operating System, CPU type and speed, 32Bit or 64Bit design, and installed RAM memory. The section marked Find specifications using Windows System information.
