2 2ndG Nanos, 1 PC?

Hi all,
The wife and I have 2 2nd Gen Nanos. mine is 8GB, hers is 4GB.
Can I use the same instal of itunes and one liabray of songs to sync them both form the same PC? Will the PC be ok using 2 Ipods on I version of Itunes?
Also, as ers is smaller, how do I sync just the songs she wants? Craete a play list "Wife's music" and get her nanon just to sunc that. then she can add and delete tunes from her playlist, depending on what she wants out of the total library???
Cheers in adavnce...

See these articles about using more than one iPod on one computer, and with either one or more iTunes libraries.
Multiple iPod installations.
How to use multiple iPods with one computer.
If you have the latest iTunes, an easy way to create a new library is to hold down the 'alt' key whilst opening iTunes (for Macs), or hold down the 'shift' key (for Windows).
This will give you the option of either using the current iTunes library or creating a new one.
There are various methods of transferring different songs to different iPods with a single iTunes library.
One is to manage the songs manually.
With this setting, you can drag and drop songs/playlists etc onto the iPod from iTunes, and also delete and/or edit songs which are currently on the iPod without affecting the iTunes library.
If you wish to keep the convenience of automatic sync, then you could set the iPods to sync with "selected playlists". This setting can be found in the iPod summary screen under the 'music' tab. With this setting, different playlists can be transferred and later deleted from each iPod without affecting any playlists stored in iTunes or the playlists on the other iPods.
Also, on the 'summary' main page you will see the option to "only sync checked items". With this setting selected, if you remove the check marks from any songs in iTunes, they will not be transferred to the iPod. You can restore the check mark if you want to put the songs back on the iPod at a later date.
Be aware that when playing songs in iTunes, any songs that do not have a check mark against them will be skipped over and will not be played.

  • Nano no longer recognizable by iTunes on either of my computers

This is a little different from other similar problems I've found here on the forums:
Until 2 days ago, my Nano was working fine (with iTunes 6.0.5 for XP). Then suddenly, iTunes stopped recognizing it. I tried resetting the Nano, same thing (and have read with amusement the suggestion to restore the iPod -- which of course requires its being recognized by iTunes!).
It shows up as a hard drive on "My Computer", so Windows sees it.
AND here's the kicker: This is true both on my desktop and my laptop, both of which worked fine a few days ago.
Any ideas? Or should I bring it into an Apple store?

  • How do i sync one itunes account with two iphones, one ipod touch, and a nano?

I need help in how to sync the one itunes account we use as a family with the two iphones my wife and i have and an ipod touch that my son has and a nano that my daughter has. Please help.

That article applies, as far as I can tell, to all things called iPod X where X can be nano, touch, classic etc.
We don't have two iPhones in the family as yet but as I understand it each device can have separate settings for syncing calendars and contacts. For example my iPhone syncs these over the air with the Exchange server at work so if/when my wife gets an iPhone it would be easy to have hers sync to our computer
To make sure your apps don't inadvertently merge turn off Automatically sync new apps from the apps tab when you connect your device.
The Apple support document How to use multiple iPods with one computer suggests a number of ways for managing the media content. I use method two (Sync with selected playlists) with a slight twist. Rather than regular playlists I set the grouping field to indicate which users should receive which tracks and create smart playlists based on the content of this field.
    e.g.
"Alice's Tracks" is "Grouping contains Alice" + "Kind contains audio"
"Bob's Videos" is "Grouping contains Bob" + "Kind does not contain audio"
Tracks that both Alice & Bob want on their iPods have the grouping set to "Alice/Bob"
    etc.
I currently manage our family's five iDevices using this system, each getting a different selection to suit their tastes and the capacity of their device. An advantage of using the grouping field is that it is stored in file tags (for non-wav audio files anyway) so that it is relatively easy to recreate the playlists should the iTunes library get trashed and need rebuilding. Also useful if you move files about manually as playlist membership is preserved when you delete & re-import the tracks.

  • Can i have an ipod mini and an ipod nano on same account

My daughter got an ipod mini 2 christmas's ago and so we have an itunes account. This christmas my son got an ipod nano because they had discontinued the minis. My son likes a lot of the songs that my daughter had on her ipod and i really dont want to use all that money just to rebuy songs. I was wondering if there was any way that I could use one account and they both have the same songs on their ipods.
      Windows XP

There are a couple of methods for using more than one iPod on a single computer. One way is is to set your preferences so each iPod is updated with only certain playlists within one library. You could create one playlist for the Mini and one for the Nano. Each playlist can have whatever songs you like in it drawn from the single library. • IPod nano does not charge & is not recognized by computer or iTunes

    I have a 1st generation nano 1 GIG.
    It appears "dead."
It is not recognized by My Computer, iTunes or the Ipod Updater (The updater asks that I connect the iPod, which I do). The iPod diagnostics through iTunes also reports that my iPod is not connected.
I have tried my iPod on 4 different machines, with one of them having USB 2.0.
I tried the following from Jeff Bryan. (I don't know if the links from his post have carried over into this post.) So I will list the things I have tried near the end of this post.
    - My iPod won't turn on.
    - iPod battery doesn't charge.
    - iTunes 7 doesn't recognize the iPod.
    - Your Windows PC doesn't recognize iPod.
    - iPod appears in Windows Explorer but does not appear in iTunes.
    - iPod does not appear in iTunes.
    - Fast user switching in Windows XP is not supported.
I tried resetting my iPod by switching the Hold button on and off and then pressing Menu and the Select button for 6-10 seconds. I have done this over and over and over.
I have uninstalled the latest iTunes, reboot, reinstall - same problem.
I have stopped the iPod service, plugged in the iPod, but it isn't recognized by My Computer as stated in the Apple Do-It-Yourself Help. I launched iTunes - same problem.
I used the window cleanup utility, reboot, reinstall iTunes, connect iPod - same problem.
I have used the Windows ipconfig utility to change my boot parameters, but still nothing.
If anyone has any ideas, I would greatly appreciate them.
My iPod is just shy of 6 months.
I do have a replacement contract with Best Buy - but I would like to cover all the bases before I succumb to defeat.

  • IPod Nano 4Gb (2nd Gen) not detected by Windows or iTunes

I am hoping someone can help me with this as I am at my wits end.
When I plug my iPod into the usb port, it begins the charging process, but neither windows, nor iTunes will detect any new devices. I have tried the 4 R's (the fifth needs a connection with iTunes), putting it into disc mode, and even on 3 different windows computers, but no dice. To save the no doubt normal questions, The usb ports are 2.0, and brand spanking new, which i have tested sucessfully with other usb devices, so I know it's not the usb port. I have the latest drivers & updates installed, and the latest version of iTunes also installed.
    Other potentially useful info:
The model is iPod nano 4bg alu 2nd gen
It's not new, i was given it as a gift by a friend who upgraded to the video model.
Though I can't be sure, I suspect that the dock cable isn't an apple product. Given that *very few* places where I live sell official iPod accessories, it is difficult for me to check.
Like I said, i really hope someone can help me, I really don't know how long i can go listening to my friends rather dubious music tastes...

  • Nano Not Recognized by Windows or Itunes

This just happened. I've been synching my nano forever, including my runs with my Nike +Ipod. And today, my computer no longer recognizes my Ipod. Windows also does not recognize it, so I am unable to restore and/or upgrade the Ipod Software. I have tried:
    1. Rebooting PC/Rebooting Ipod (5 r's)
    2. Reinstalling iTunes
    3. Checking my Device Manager
    4. Tried this with 3 different PC's/2 different cables
But if no computer recognizes it, how will I ever be able to restore or reinstall the software?
Thanks in advance for your help.

Can you put it in Disk Mode (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93651) and then have your computer see it?

  • Nano no longer recognized by Windows

I have a first generation Nano. It was connecting to Windows XP machine just fine and iTunes worked great --- until yesterday. Now it's no longer seen by iTunes, or by My Computer. I've reset the iPod and tried everything else on the support site.
I have two iPods, two computers and two cables. The other iPod connects just fine with either computer and either cable, so I know it's not the computers or cable. This iPod doesn't connect on either computer with either cable.
This iPod plays music just fine -- it just doesn't connect to the computer.
In iTunes I've done Help/Diagnostics/iPod Dignostics. The result is "red" under "iPod Connection Status," with the following text:

    Any advice?

I've had this problem and given the advice to others and it has worked for some. This isn't mentioned in any other advice that I can see but it is a simple check that you should do, not very technical either!
With your iPod plugged in to the computer, first go through the 5R's and other help topics to check the basics (new cable, different computer, different USB port etc.)
If no luck, check to see if your iPod exists in Device Manager as follows: right-click on My Computer, then click on Manage, then Device Manager, then expand the section called Disk Drives on the right hand side and see if the iPod is shown there, if it is, go on to the next stage.
In the same Computer Management box, click on Disk Management on the left hand side, after a few seconds a new box opens on the right and should show all of the disks on your computer including the iPod. Then right-click on the iPod information and it will give you an option to Change the drive letter or path....click on that and then select Change; select a new drive letter which is not already assigned to any other disc (I picked Z down the bottom), save that then exit and see if it works. Good luck!

    Hello there dilip77707,
It sounds like you are getting this error message that your iPod cannot be read from or written to when you are trying to update your iPod Nano. I recommend the troubleshooting from the following article to help you get that resolved. Its pretty straight forward, just start at the top and work your way down as needed:
'Disk cannot be read from or written to' when syncing iPod or 'Firmware update failure' error when updating or restoring iPod

My ipod nano 5th generation will no longer play any of it's loaded songs.  It still plays the video that is on it, and the radio works.  It is not recognized by itunes and I have gone through all their help steps.  Is there some other way to restore it?

  • Ipod Nano no longer recognized by Itunes

I have an Ipod Nano that I used with my Toshiba and Itunes. About a month ago, I got an Ipod Touch (lots of fun)and used it with the same Itunes. It worked fine. However, it does not recognize the Nano anymore. It charges but nothing else happens. Any thoughts? The Nano is recognized by other computers.
    Thanks!

I've run into similar problems. I have four iPods (a firewire 3G, a Shuffle, a nano and a 5G) attached to my PC and I've yet to get all of them to show up in iTunes at once, even after restoring and reloading each of them. The Shuffle shows up for a few seconds, then goes away. The Nano, 3G and 5G stick around for a while, but if two of them are connected to the system, one of them (usually the nano or the 3G) vanishes from iTunes when the third is connected.
ITunes won't say so specifically, but you won't be able to successfully restore a device unless it's the only one connected to your system. What's more, if you have more than one iPod connected when you attempt to restore one, there's a good chance you'll screw up your other one instead. No big deal, unless you're on your way out the door and must now wait for 6000 songs to resync, but still a hassle.

  • My nano touch will no longer sync.

When I plug in my nano, iTunes acknowledges that the nano is plugged in - partially.  The nano appears in the "devices" category, and the nano is charging.  However, it does not sync (iTunes is set to sync automatically, and it used to).  I tried to select "Sync iPod" from the File menu, but it is greyed out.  I ran the diagnostics - again, iTunes says the device is present and connected, but when I ran the sync test, it says it can't find an iPod.  My iTunes is updated to 10.2.2.
    Ideas?
