I have been fooling around with this board for quite a while just thought I would post some stats and see what kind of response I get.
2.4C OC to 3350MHz agp/pci locked, Bios overclocked CPU voltage 1.565, DDR Voltage 2.75 stable Prime 95 8 hrs and memtest 86 no errors extended test. I would copy CPU-Z for you but havent't figured out how to copy and paste to this site.

so... now what? is it stable for gaming/benching or only good enough for booting and taking a screenshot? because my best was 278MHz with a 2.8c 800FSB, and that was only good enough for booting and taking a screenshot.
my highest safe speed was 268MHz. i could bench it. got me a lower score than 243MHz though, because of the crappy RAM i had back then.

Hello, just to note, that Air-cooled conversion was for the DPs, not the Dual Cores like the Quad, that produce much more heat.
I also think 70 to 75 degrees Celsius is not acceptable.

  • Air Cooled or Liquid Cooled.

I have been reading a lot on line and I was wondering if My dual core 2.3 G5 has air cooling or Liquid cooling. I have never had to open my case except to add Ram and change hard drives. I have a dead Mother Board and was just wondering. thanks.

    Explain these please...

Lightning does strike twice. We had another G5 (dual 2.3 GHz, May 2005) acting strange yesterday (Quicktime movie freezing up, cannot shut down/restart via Apple Remote Desktop), so we went to the comm closet to check it (another pampered G5 in a cooled, dust free environment).
This one's leak is a bit different " slow enough that the coolant has been crystallizing and drying very quickly, over a longer period of time.
    http://www.macintouch.com/readerreports/powermacg5/topic4243.html
There's been debate on some other models like the "Late 2005" dual-core 2.3GHz - one owner reported a leak here (in Nov. 2007 mail) but three other owners have said their dual-core 2.3 were air-cooled, despite having the 'liquid warning' stencil on the PS. (From the photos one 2.3GHz owner sent, it clearly appeared to be air-cooled, not LCS.)
"bought my G5 Dual core 2.3ghz with 4GB of RAM powermac Nov 2005 (He originally said Nov. 2004, but the dual-core 2.3GHz was a "late 2005" series) and on the 18th of august 2007 it shut off and stated ticking... I tried to restart which didn't work. So I called mac support. I opened the side panel and noticed liquid on the rear bottom "foot"

  • Case/CPU Temps @ Air cooling

    Yo guys,
Iam just curious how did you set up your rig ( Only Air cooling ).
And of cause what temperatures you get ....
    My setup :
Chieftec midi tower - this is at 3,2 ghz
2 x silent 80mm fans intake at the backside
2 x silent 80mm fans outake at the front side
    Zalmann7000cnps aicu
    NB msi stock light fan
    Idle ( windows desktop )
    CPU @ 30c
    MB   @ 30c
    Load ( midnight club 2 or 3dmark)
    CPU @ 50-55c
    MB   @ 39-43c
I dont like my mainboard temps but probably my cpu fan is blowing all the warm temps directly on the mb sensor.

Like alot of people in the first couple of years overclocking/modding PCs, I got a little Fan-Happy. I replaced 6 of the 7 case fans in my Thermaltake case w/ 2 80mm Tornados front (attached to PSU fan RPM control), 2 Aerocool High CFM 80mm side, and 2 Coolermaster High RPM 80mm back. Plus the Zalman 7000 AlCu, and a 120mm on the inside of my Hard Drive cage (otherwise air from front tends to get trapped in the drive cage and not provide any flow toward the rear)
If I trusted the various monitoring sensor apps I'd be very pleased..
CPU 27-33C @ Idle & never beyond 48-50C at full load (except during a couple of heatwaves we in Northern Cali had a while back)
Case is usually in the low to mid 20s except on really hot days, at night it can drop to 18C.
The Thermaltake CPU sensor basically confirmed these temps when I had it attached, but I stll think of them only as a guideline.

  • Air cooling q6600

So I am looking into overclocking my q6600 from it's stock 2.4 ghz to 3.0 ghz. I was wondering what I should be looking at for cpu cooling. I would prefere to stick with air cooling as I am using an ANTEC 900 Gaming case. Any suggestions (bonus if I can install it without having to remove the motherboard). Thanks

    Time for some new cooling.

  • Lightweight but functional air cooler for 15" MBP

I like to use my MBP in bed sometimes to watch movies.
I want to use a cooler for it, but one that won't make the 15" MBP heavier than it already is.
Any recommendations on a cooler that works great but doesn't weigh too much for a 15" MBP?
    thanks!

Don't use your MBP in bed. It belongs on a hard, flat surface. Bedclothes will impede the flow of air into and out of a fan-cooling device just as they impede its flow through your MBP, and no fan-cooling device is going to weigh much less than a pound.
In short, use your machine the way it's designed to be used, and it won't need any extra cooling.

  • Macbook Air cooling fan surges hugely for minutes at a time.

For the past 3 months now, my MacBook Air, OSX 10.9.3, 2.6 GHz Intel Core i7, 16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3, simply surges to a fever pitch for about 1 minute and then dies back away.
The system could even be in a quiet state running no unusual software, not challenging simulations, nothing.
I have IT staff looking at me saying stuff like...
    - "Is your system going to explode?"
    or
note realizing that is has a flash ram drive, "your hard drive is done for."
The fan works normally at a low pace from time to time in its normal work.  But, simply takes off occassionally, what gives?

    If gaming or watching videos
    NORMAL
If it rapidly surges while doing the same thing for a long time, RESET THE SMC
    RESET SMC
    Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
Note: The LED on the MagSafe power adapter may change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SMC.
if same, then you have a damaged/ defective heat sensor tripping fan.

  • Air cooled 4.1ghz 1090T on nf980-g65

So I left my window open and noticed how very cold it was in here so I decided to push for 4.16ish ghz and I got it stable with no real increase in temps lol been running under a full load F@H on cpu for a few hours now here are some of the temps. This however will more than likely be clocked back to close to stock if the weather gets hotter, cause I will not run AC ever! Anyways here are some pics.
Notice even with the cold temps my evga 560ti still got hot vs the rest of the system under a few hours of 99% gpu folding..... my roommates MSI twin frozer 560ti can do 10 hrs of gpu folding and stay really cool... WTG MSI on the frozer
ps the evga is at stock clock of a 560ti because I was testing it aginst my roommate twin frozer and results show his did out perform mine by 4-7% respectively...

LOL you are right on it was 0c or 33F I could see my breath lol its now like 44f or 5c
Few more hours of folding mixed with some other tests
I turned my gas off to my heater already hehe so dress warm if youre coming to sope's
PS. Henry I'll trade ya my phenom x2 555 BE and my Evga 560ti for your MSI 560ti GE

  • Best Air System Cooler

Hey, I was wondering, what do you think is the BEST AIR cooling device for a AMD Athlon Xp 2800+, obviously to overclock it :P, and the best memory for the task. Thanks in advance.

  • P965 Platinum FSB is temperature dependent.

After much testing with both the kentsfield and conroe and various video cards, cases, coolers, etc. I've come to the conclusion that the max FSB on this board is heavily dependent on temperature. In a cool case with a midrange video card I had no problems getting to 380FSB relatively easily. Throw in an 8800GTX with its fan right next to one of the MB heatsinks and suddenly Windows no longer boots. However the system will POST as high as 425, but not recognize the hard drive properly.
    Some things to note:
333FSB will probably work with little or no voltage increase on the chipset.
The voltage sweet spot on the chipset is the 1.49 or 1.56 setting, though if you watercool it you could probably use the higher ones.
360FSB should be reachable in most systems at 1.56v or less (as we've seen)
380FSB will work at 1.56v in a cool system.
If you want 400+, you're going to need to replace the stock chipset coolers with something more powerful, but it's likely not that hard to achieve with a high end air cooler or waterblock.
I don't think you'll see 433 without max voltage and serious watercooling.

Actually I don't even think it's the MCH. I think it's the northbridge-southbridge interconnect. As I mentioned in I can POST 425 consistently, but it fails when it goes to boot the HD. 395 and lower produce errors regarding windows not finding the system directory. I think since the southbridge is directly opposite the 8800GTX's fan it's getting overheated and when the MCH can't maintain proper communication with the rest of the chipset it flips out. If I change cards to a Radeon x1950XTX I can run 380FSB stable all day long, but even with an 850W PSU the 8800 causes issues and it's much much hotter. Also I've hooked a power monitor up and even at peak load with the 8800 and kentsfield the system draws a max of 309 watts. If it was really a power issue, I seriously doubt I would have been able to forget to plug in the 4pin +12v line to the motherboard and play BF2142 all night without noticing. Also the stability in both cases was definitely sensitive to the ambient temperature.
I don't know if I'll get a chance to put different coolers on, but I'd suspect that it will make a significant difference. The good news is that since there's no massive heatpipe system that you have to rip off half the board it shouldn't be too hard to get better cooling on it.

  • Fsb 270+

is anyone on this forum able to run fsb's higher than 270? and if so, what bios are you using?
also. ive read many articles on my ram that enable it to hit higher speeds but with cas of 3 instead of 2.5. i have tried relaxing the timings but alas, it wont even boot/post when i have the memory timings other than by SPD.
i know people can run higher than 270, as i have read people running fsbs of 300 (can be seen here - stick in 2.4c and look at the results).

Hey, FSB 270+ comes close to the realm of the mythical. I know we’ve been talking about FSB 300 today, but, seriously, that’s mostly crazy talk. I don’t know what your setup is like, but if you’re breaching 250 with air cooling, then I’m going to assume you owe your soul to some demon somewhere. I’d expect the only way you’d get above 270 would be with water-cooling or vapochill (which, as I understand it, is a variation on air conditioning).
Edit: I took a (second) look at your setup, and given that you are using air cooling, I'd like the name and number of the demon that set you up.

  • K8N Neo BIOS FSB OC VERY limited

Well I have seen this on several message boards, the Viperlair review here:Viperlair review and observed it myself. The OC from the BIOS on my system will not boot 140> using any multiplier/MEM/HT/Vcore combination. My Basic system specs:
    Vapochill PE and Alpha PAL8150
    K8N Neo
    A64 3000
    Tried 2x512, 2x256, 1x512 and 1x256 PC4200
    Pelt Cooled 9800 Pro
Using clockgen I can get 10x245 at stock Vcore even on air cooling so I know the CPU should be able to do better with sub 0 cooling in a Vapo case. I can also lower the multiplier and get to 280>FSB using clockgen. It's going to be a real shame if there is no way around this BIOS limitation. A few other glitches I hope they fix:
    1) The temps are still reading way off. My P4C/4Ghz 1.65v idled at -2~0c and hit 15~17c load. The A64 3000 at idle reports 8c and goes no lower no matter what the Vapochill is cranked up to. Load temps are 15~17c. This has been reported on many of the Nforce 3 MOBO's. None of the MOBO manufacturers seems able/willing to issue a BIOS fix for this. For that matter none of them seem to be willing to admit there is a problem at all.
    2) Do not use the Forceware IDE SW. I am using the latest v4.24 and the basic XP Pro setup with 1 drive connected to the SATA was detected and worked fine. Immediately after installing the Forceware drivers the system would no longer boot with the SATA drive connected. I had to disconnect the SATA drive and roll back the drivers on all the PATA and SATA controllers. Everything worked normally after that.
    3) The NVIDIA Nforce PCI System Management will NOT share IRQ 11 with anything. This really bummed me out as the second channel on my Adaptec 39320-R Host RAID controller also wants to use IRQ 11. I had no option but to take out the 15K SCSI drive that I use for speedy virtual CD access in gaming and replace it with an IDE drive. I still have not gotten this issue worked out and had to disable the second channel. I hope a later BIOS fixes this issue. It has been some time since I have had a hard IRQ conflict like this, I thought XP wuz supposed to solve these sorts of issues. Oh well.
    4) Damn that southbridge gets hot, active cooling would have been nice. I already replaced the white thermal goo with AS, removed the MSI ID plate and installed a small fan to the HS. The temps still go 50c+ under load. I was going to add a larger HS but the ramsinks on my ATI 9800 Pro  inhibit installation. I may add a small water block later to get temps down.

So you say you can't boot above 240fsb setting using your bios buy you can use clockgen and get to 280? What version of clockgen are you using? I can't get above 230 no matter what I use. When I use clockgen in windows and go above 235 windows just locks up. Also getting alot of hard drive corruption. I've had to install windows 4 times now. Using a couple of raptors in a raid array. I wonder if it's a pci lock thing or the crappy nvidia ide and sata drivers. Did the fan on the heatsink help at all?
