2.5" Firewire Drive - Permanently Connected, But Not Mounting?

I've been having trouble with a firewire drive (Seagate GoFlex FW800, 2.5" bus-powered drive) on my 2010 iMac, which recently failed, but I've found conflicting information to suggest whether the problems I've been having are part of a wider issue with OS X - for example, there are other recent posts on here which seem to be having issues with firewire drives, but slightly different issues.
Basically, I wanted it always connected (obviously it spins itself down when not being accessed). However, if I shut down or sleep my iMac, 90% of the time when I turn it back on the drive would be visible, but would just hang indefinitely if I attempted to access it (until I pulled the cable out). If I plugged it straight back in, it worked fine from then on, until I next shut my iMac down.
I've seen some things on the internet suggesting that a recent update to OS X broke it (i'm fully up-to-date), but I can't remember when it started going wrong so not sure whether that's true.
I've seen other things on the internet that suggest that certain brands of drive cannot be made to restart with the Mac, and that only certain firewire controllers are supported. But i'm sure I used to be able to do this when I first got the drive...?
I've also seen some suggestions from last year that it's an occasional problem that can be resolved by resetting SMC and PRAM - both of which I've tried and did nothing. I also tried disk repair, which had no effect.
So, can anyone shed any light on this. Is it a known problem with OS X, that certain FW800 drives aren't supported? Is it just a glitch that sometimes happens? Does anyone else use a Seagate GoFlex FW800 drive without these problems?
Any suggestions / experiences greatly appreciated.
David

You saying the external drive works with USB and doesn't with FW and you only have a FW400 cable?  I assume your mac uses FW800.  FW800 requires a 9-pin connector.  FW400 a 6-pin.  Cables and adapters exist to go from 9-pin to 6-pin.  But I don't think plugging a 6-pin FW400 cable into 9-pin FW800 socket will work.  That's probably your problem.

  • FireWire Drive in Enclosure  Will not mount cleanly  after installn Leopard

    Help!
I installed Leopard and had a devil of a time and may have messed up my External 200 GB Maxtor drive in an Enclosure connected via firewire directly to my Mac.
Let me explain: I had a Maxtor internal 200 GB Hard Drive. I removed that drive and put it in an Enclosure connected with a FireWire Cable to my G4 QuickSilver desk top. I purchased a larger Seagate 500 GB Hard Drive and installed Leopard on it in the same internal slot where the Maxtor was installed previously. My other Internal Drive was a Seagate 250 GB Hard Drive on which I have Tiger with the latest update. Now I have two operating systems--one on the Sea Gate 250 GB with Tiger --and the other is a internal Hard Drive is 500 GB Seagate with Leopard on it. I now have installed two different version of MacOS X respectively. I select the boot drive in the System Preferences as I want to migrate to Leopard slowly due to the software programs that will require later updates with Leopard.
The external Maxtor drive now does not "mount" upon reboot like the other LaCie drives Firewire external Drives. If I toggle the drive "Power Switch" "on and off" the Maxtor in the enclosure is finally displayed on the desk top. A message comes up, that I *"did not eject the drive properly and I could loose data", "Initialize, Cancel or Eject"*. I choose "Cancel". Then the drive comes back to the desk top.
This all started up after I had to reinstall Leopard as Leopard would poll all ports and got confused--and took forever to install. I had to reformat the internal new Seagate 500 HD and wrote "0" on it and then installed Leopard on it from the DVD. It did not install properly the second time. I had to power down and disconnect all USB and Fire Wire peripherals including the Maxtor. Then I installed Leopard from the DVD and right away did the update. Finally Safari worked in Leopard. Then I reconnected all peripherals including the Maxtor.
Now the Maxtor does not display on the Desk top. When I toggle the external hard drive "off on" switch I found the "External 200 GB Maxtor data drive in an Initio Enclosure" on the disk top. In Disk Utility I tried to "repair" it and sometime that takes. It seems to have the data files on it--and I also run Disk Warrior and Tech Tools Pro. Tech Tools shows two mount points names "Disk4 Initio 6L20P0" and "Disk5 Initio L200P0". It also shows "Disk ID Disk 5s2" and also "Disk ID 4s2". I ran Both Tech Tools and Disk Warrior on it and Disk Warrior crashed during the rewriting of the Desktop during the first time I ran it.
This disk was an internal disk which I put into an enclosure but it worked previously as a data drive prior when Tiger was on a different drive. Ii worked OK as a mounted HD prior to my installing Leopard. After to installing Leopard initially on the new Seagate internal 500 GB Drive, Leopard would hang up in Safari after the initial installation.
I was on line with Apple Tech Support and I had to reinstall Leopard and do the update after reformatting the 500 GB internal Seagate. Now Leopard works OK except it does not display the Maxtor HD on the desk top. The Tiger works OK also except it also does not display the Maxtor HD on the desk top. I have to toggle the "off on switch" to get them to mount the Maxtor on the Desk top. That is when the message comes up about the "Initialize, Cancel or Eject".
What advise can you give me?

Well I am happy to report the solution to my F/W enclosure drive dilemma.
I had to do an archive and reinstall of Tiger from the DVD. Then I used the Combo updater as suggested by someone on this Group Discussion Forum to get my Maxtor F/W drive to mount and behave properly on my desk top.
I tried everything in between--but this seems to work OK for now.
After I installed Tiger as an Archive and Install from the DVD, I downloaded the Combo Updater to 10.4.11. I shut down and removed all items from my computer except the monitor and keyboard and Airport Extreme Base Station.
    Then I installed the update.
I plugged in the connections including my Lacie FW external drives and they mounted easily. Then I plugged in the Maxtro in an enclosure. It mounted--as it had many times before.
Then I checked it in System profiler--and the drive and the Maxtor Volume name were displayed under the FW items in the Initio Enclosure. The other two Lacie F/W drives were also displayed.
I then jumped to Disk Utility and the drives were all displayed.
I selected the Maxtor and repaired the drive and one bad file count was detected and Disk Utility repaired it.
Then I shut down and rebooted into the Safe Mode. I opened the desk top and all drives were seen. This procedure apparently cleans out the caches and other items that might confuse the HD.
Upon reboot, I could see all 3 F/W drives and the 2 internal drives on the desk top.
Hopefully I am out of the woods--but now I have to make sure all my drivers and other items are back in service.
I have Photo Shop Elements 3 now working and so does my scanner aster I had to work on the scanner settings. My printer is still not printing yet from my scanner.
Most other items seem to work--including Safari 3.04.
I hope no one else makes that same mistake--always remove all items from your computer when a major update or install of a new Mac OS is performed.
This cost me 2 weeks of agony--including a spoiled Thanksgiving Holiday!!

It's not clear whether you were able to do any backups to this drive at all.  If not, it's probably not formatted properly.  See #5 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions for instructions.
If you did get any successful backups, there may be a problem with the drive, or the backups may be corrupted.  Try to repair the backups, per #A5 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.

my usb that i have been using on my computer for a while suddenly stopped working, but is still glowing and letting me know that it is connected, but not showing up in disk utility

Either the physical drive or the enclosure electronics has failed. The light you are seeing is powered by the USB connection, the power, electricity, all USB ports put out. That doesn't mean the actual physical hard drive or the USB to SATA bus electronics are working properly. If it doesn't show in Disk Utility then it is DEAD.
Most of the time it is the enclosures electronics that fail. Removing the physical drive from the enclosure and put it in another enclosure or using a SATA to USB adapter, one that has it's own AC power supply, might allow you to get the files off the drive.

    Hi
One simple method you can use to list out the folders of your computer.
If any USB Pendrive is connected with your computer you will get the Pen Drive Name.
First get all number of drives. Make constant this value if next time with your pendrive you get the number of element is more then the fixed one then you can say external device is connected with PC.
May be this is not the standard method to detect the device, but it can solve your issue.

Time Machine doesn't work well, if at all, with many NASs. See the pink box in #2 of [Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/FAQ.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
There are several threads in the Snow Leopard > Time Machine forum with what appear to be similar problems with Iomega NASs.
If I connect my macbook to the router directly via an ethernet cable, and start a backup, it works fine. If I however try to start a backup when only on wireless it always fails.
An indication of a bad wireless connection or interference, but could also be the setup of the NAS or compatibility with the way the router works in wireless mode.

You've posted in the Leopard forum, and didn't specify what version of OSX you're on. But those messages usually indicate that your NAS is not fully compatible with the Time Machine requirements on Snow Leopard.
    Error: (5) getxattr for key:com.apple.backupd.SnapshotState path:/Volumes/MAC Backups/Backups.backupdb/Gary's MacBook Pro/2011-01-15-042811
Those are errors reading from the backups; specifically, getting extended attributes from the backups on your NAS (a "snapshot" is Time Machine's name for a backup folder).
First, contact the maker of the NAS for updated software/firmware compatible with Snow Leopard.
That might fix the problem. If not, all we can tell you is, it may be some problem with the setup of the NAS, and/or compatibility with the wireless function of your router. See the maker's instructions/Help/support.

I had this problem ever since I installed iTunes 7...
It occoured as soon as I installed the new verison while still using my old 4gb first gen. iPod nano.
Now I just recently bought a new second generation nano, and still have the same problem.
And the issue is, Whenever I close iTunes while my iPod is connected (but not being updated), i get the message that "iTunes.exe has preformed an illegal operation and will be closed".
Though I just noticed that if I disconnect the iPod before closing itunes, it closes fine and normally.
I Have tried to solve it by following toturials for uninstalling both just iTunes, and iTunes + QuickTime at the same time, and preform separate installations after cleaning the temp. folder and restarting. None of it has helped me solve the problem

I have a new ipod because my last one was stolen and I have plugged it in and my PC wont recognise it. I think that is because my old ipod is the only one my computer will accept. Can that be right? It said the hardware device had been detected and then it said that it was troubled and it simply did not work. Now it is plugged in and not at all recognised in my computer anywhere. Can any one help this clueless girl who simply wants to listen to music again?

your HP Pavilion needs a new DVD driver. I ran into many problems such as this when troubleshooting computers in school.
A DVD drive should play CD at any time:  While a CD driver will not play a DVD disc. Do not think there is a problem with sofware because it will only throw your troubleshooting skills  out the window and it will confuse you.

    - An iPod can only sync with one iTunes library. Yu can however manage music and videos among different computers by:
Using iPhone, iPad, or iPod with multiple computers
    - To change syncing computer, move all the media to compute r#2
    - Connect the iPod to #2 and make a backup by right clicking on the iPod under Devices in iTunes and select Back Up
    - Restore the iPod from that backup
Note tha the iPod backup the iTunes makes does not include synced media like apps and music.

  • Firewire Drive Recognized, but not Mounting

Hi all - I have a peculiar problem with my iMac as it is not mounting anything Firewire.  System Profiler recognizes there is something attached via Firewire, it even displays the information about it, but there is no disk to be accessed.
Also, the iMac can successfully work in Target Disk mode on another computer, but so far won't recognize an external hard drive (WD 2TB) or MacBook in Target Disk mode.  Also, I only have a Firewire 400 cable to use, and the computer recognized and mounts the drive using USB 2.0.
Any suggestions?  I've already tried resetting the SMC and PRAM...  Not sure what I'm up against now...
