2.5 PATA to SATA - Possible?

Hello,
Just acquired in mint condition a PowerBook G4 17 inch 9970 model. I have seen and heard of a type of PATA TO SATA adapter in existence and was wondering if this type of adapter is remotely possible for converting the PATA interface inside the powerbook to a sata? If this is true, then it is possible to use SATA HDDs and SSD's eliminating the need for a PATA SSD.
I was thinking of getting a PATA legacy SSD for 150.00, but might now consider the PATA-SATA adapter which will then allow sata support internally inside the powerbook. Can anyone confirm that this can work?
Nevertheless, I plan to get next week a PATA SSD Legacy drive if not.
Thanks
Romko

OWC has a relatively new line of "Legacy" SSDs and this one:
http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/SSD/OWC/MercuryLegacyPro
is supposed to work in a PBG4 according to their product info. Click on any of the sizes listed to see the models they claim are supported.
Did you acquire a 17" PowerBook or are you still asking about the 15-incher in the 17" forums? There may be size/fit issues with the smaller 15-inch case that are better addressed in the PBG4 15-inch forum area here:

  • How to convert PATA to SATA?

    Hi everyone,
I've been "busting" my head trying to find an affordable internal Blu ray burner compatible with my MacPro 2006 (model 1.1) that still has PATA connectors for the optical drives.
I thought of maybe thinking "out of the box" a little. Is it possible to change the PATA cables inside the MacPro 2006 (model 1.1) to SATA cables?
I'm also thinking about being able to insert such an optical drive into an external enclosure kit if need be to be able to use it on another computer via Fire or eSATA. In other words, I'm thinking of maybe purchasing an iMac in the near future and I'm looking for a Blu ray burner that I would be able to transfert from one computer to another.
    Rio

If you want to use a SATA Optical drive inside a 2006 Mac Pro, a converter board is not the best solution.
In addition to the pATA cable for Optical Drives, there are two unused SATA ports inside a 2006 Mac Pro for just this purpose. They are not in an excellent location, there are no data cables, and the power cables may need to be adapted from four-pin Molex to 15-pin SATA-Power, depending on your drive.
Thats what many of the posts on this thread have been trying to say -- this is not much of a "hack" when the connectors are already there, and everything is set up for the transition to cheaper SATA Optical Drives, which just happened a little later than Apple expected.
If you want to use a SATA Optical drive as an External, OWC/MacSales sells a kit that connects to the "spare" SATA data connectors and is long enough to get out to an unused PCI slot plate:

  • Solaris 10/x86 PATA to SATA migration (how to get Sol working again?)

    Hello,
due to failures in my 80G PATA drive I've bough new 80GB SATA, did:
    dd if=/dev/hda of=/dev/sda
in Linux (the disk has WXP/Linuxes and Solaris installed) and after linux kernel recompilation I've been able to use at least linux on my new healthy (knocking on the wood) drive. Now, the problem seems to be that Solaris 10 stopped working. The question is where to obtain SATA drivers for my MB and how to install them to the already installed Solaris to get the installation working again?
My board is Asus A8V and SATA drive is connected to VIA VT6420 chip -- at least that's for what I'm using Linux drivers succesfuly.
Is this support already provided for Sol10?
    Thanks,
    Karel

I found that there was a library name /lib/ld.so.1 It appears as though this is missnamed. I created a link
    ln -s /lib/ld.so.1 /lib/libld.so.1
Then I created a second link:
    ln -s /lib/libld.so.1 /lib/libld.so
    Everything now compiles without issue.

  • External eSATA/SATA possible with a G4 FW800?

Thanks to all the very knowledgeable posters who've answered here, I've already learned quite a bit about the new (to me) G4 FW800. I've also read quite a bit in this forum re: HD upgrades, still not certain this will work. I've got a new 750GB external SATA drive I'd like to connect to my G4 FW800. Looks like I can get a card for about $50, but some of the cards say eSATA. The 7200rpm Seagate drive is in a Macally case with just SATA and USB2 (slow) connectors.
Will a PCI SATA card work in the FW800? How about an eSATA card?
TIA for any help or advice.

    dhagin,
    Welcome to discussions.
PCI eSATA (if one exists) is what you want.
A PCI SATA card would let you mount SATA drives inside the G4. Although it may also have an eSATA port on the back.
You must be very careful that you get a PCI card, rather than PCI-E (aka PCI-Express) which is what everything seems to use nowadays.
As the drive is 750GB, I don't think you'll have the last resort of just putting the hard drive inside your G4, at 750GB it's almost certainly a SATA drive inside the eSATA case (funnily enough). And any firewire drive enclosure you purchase to take the drive will have to accommodate SATA drives, rather than PATA.

  • K9A2 CF IDE / PATA and SATA issue where IDE is master boot

    Hi everyone,
I have built myself a pc using the K9A2-CF mboard and had trouble installing any OS on my SATA HDD.  Both windows and linux installers said the drive was locked and i couldn't install anything into the partition. (I have a lot of data on this drive that I want to keep.)  I couldn't even edit the partitions on the sata drive unless i deleted the master partition.
i bought a cheap 2nd hand PATA IDE disk, which i then installed winxp sp2 onto. (after some trouble as both drives were 'locked' meaning i had to delete and recreate the IDE partition) this eventually worked (IDE MASTER & Nbr1boot sequence). I even got my SATA drive working from windows.
This worked fine, but i switched off the PC and next day found it wouldn't work as the bios couldn't find the IDE drive anymore (takes a few mins to not find it too).
When I removed the SATA disk it worked ok. then when i reinstalled the sata disk it might work but then after a cold boot it doesn't.  Any ideas?
I'm pretty sure that if i reformatted the sata drive then it would work. I wish i spent an extra tenner on a second sata.  is there anyway the ide boot disk and sata storage disk can play together? i updated the bios to 1.5, played with ide jumpers. I even tried using a SATA to IDE connector that i used on my old PC but all it did was to display what looked like a graphics card code on it. (...GDDR4)
    thanks in advance,

ok guys i'm sold on the psu.  i do remember at one stage when playing around with settings and connections that the graphics card wouldn't send anything to screen.  my tv card is stuttering too so it may well be psu reated (athough that could be the s/w).
Fredrik, I can't find your guide, can you post the link please?
I'm out of the dabs 7day warranty but if i buy another psu from them then maybe they'll take it back.  ok then with my h/w spec:

    - Seagate 20GB HDD IDE
    - DVDRW SATA

    - Wireless-n n/w card
...and considering i will at some stage put a phenom in there (and i gotta make use of that memory speed someday  ),  what psu should I buy?  I've noticed that it's not really the wattage that matters but the amps down the rails?  this is a budget pc btw so i've got about £45 to spend - or is that not enough?
thanks for your help - much appreciated!

  • Serillel 2 PATA to SATA on Neo2

    Hi,
Anyone successfully using the Abit Serillel 2 on the Neo2 Platinum? My optical drive is recognised in the BIOS but not by Windows XP. I have a Raptor in SATA 3 (so the SATA drivers were already installed with XP and F6): if I plug the optical drive SATA into SATA 4 the system boots very slowly and no sign of the drive in Windows. In SATA 1 or 2, still recognised by BIOS but won't boot in to Windows at all. Only really want to do this to clear up the cabling in my overcrowded case, but it would be nice to get it to work!
    Thanks

  • Q ab. Hard Drive upgrade; PATA/SATA, S.M.A.R.T., HDD Controler

I have a few questions about replacement hard drives for my PowerBook G4 12" 1.0 GHz DVI. (I am also going to upgrade the hard drive in my wife's Powerbook G4 15" 1.33 GHz Combodrive, but I think the questions/answers below will apply to both. I'll just deal with my 12" for ease here.)
I have read Apple's specifications and searched all over to find detailed information about ATA ratings and compatibility, and I'm still in the dark about a few things. I'm interested in a 160GB or a 250GB internal drive to replace my 80GB (which did come standard as an optional feature, although this is my second 80GB--I burned the first one before my Applecare expired), and I'm looking at the following drives, for instance:
    HITACHI Travelstar 5K160 HTS541616J9AT00 (0A28419) 160GB 5400 RPM 8MB Cache ATA-6 Notebook Hard Drive - OEM

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136159
    Questions:
    1. HDD Controller limit to internal drive capacity: I've read that older powerbooks (whatever this means, it wasn't specified) may have a 128GB limit, supposedly meaning that the HDD controller will only recognize 128GB on an internal drive. Anyone know if this is true? How do I find out? It isn't published on Apple's spec page for my machine. And, if such a limit does exist for my machine, can I install a 160 GB and get the full 128GB? (b/c a 120GB will only give me 100+ usable after all.) Will the fact that the drive is lager than the total recognizable amount mess up the cataloging, data retrieval, reliability, stability...?
    2. ATA-100 vs. ATA-6 vs. ATA-7 vs. PATA vs SATA. My present 80GB TOSHIBA MK8025GAS just says ATA in the System Profiler "Protocol" field for the ATA drive. I presume that the SATA is a later, more recent, non-backwards-compatible format/pin configuration/?. I presume the 100 refers to the 100mb/s data transfer rate, which is what the Apple specifications have for my machine. The drives I am looking at, by and large, are rated at 100mb/s. They all have other specifications, however (ATA-6, ATA-7), and I am hoping to hear that they do NOT refer to pin configuration differences.
-Q- will PATA and SATA drives both fit my machine, or does the "Ultra ATA/100 hard drive" listed in the Apple Specs for my machine mean that the pin configuration/compatibility will only work with PATA drives? Thus, Is Parallel ATA what I have and need?!?! Will a faster SATA drive work in my machine? Would I be able to swap it out into a MacBook Pro when I upgrade next year? (i.e. are SATA drives &/or boards backwards compatible with PATA drives? And are PATA drives &/or boards forward compatible?)
    3. S.M.A.R.T. verification capability. I am unclear as to whether this capability is essential and which drives provide it. Some information states that Hitachi Travelstar drives DO support S.M.A.R.T. verification, but such is not listed on their information about the drives. My present 80GB Toshiba DOES have this capability, so System Profiler says. Before my previous drive failed, SMART notification may have saved me (though it's unclear if it actually made any difference--it's just notification, after all, right?), alerting me that the drive was failing and thus giving me enough time to get the last bit of un-backed-up data off the drive before it died altogether. (This is a presumption based on changing S.M.A.R.T. status notifications in System Profiler and from Disk Utility Repair Disk reports). In fact, however, I don't really know what SMART verification is, and thus I don't know how important it is.
-Q- How important is S.M.A.R.T. verification capability? And what is it really?
    -Q- which manufactures support it?
Many, many thanks for any insight.

    Jeremy:
does, that the Seagate Ultra ATA/100 which I'm about to buy will not work with an Intel-based Mac?
Your Intel-based Mac needs a Serial ATA (SATA) HDD instead of ATA or ultraATA, PATA etc. Not knowing the specs of your IntelMac select your Intel Mac here and navigate to your Model for a list of compatible HDDs.
I do intend to install them myself. I haven't had this G4 open, but I put 2 HDDs in my previous G3 without issue, so I think I'll brave it, armed with iFixit instructions.
Since you have done it before, this addition may be superfluous, but here are few tips you may find helpful:
    • Print out the ifixit directions as well as the screw guide ahead of time.
    • Be sure you have the right tools. You don't want to damage the screw heads or you may never get them out. And the correct size Torx screw driver is critical.
    • I use small medicine cups one for the screws in each step. I nest them so that the last ones out and the first to go back in are on top. You can use an ice cube tray, egg carton, dixie cups etc. (Some users report cutting up the screw guide and placing the applicable section in each container.)
    • Be very careful pulling out leads. Hold the lead as close to the plug as possible and wiggle (the plug ) to loosen its grip. Don’t hold the wires and pull as that can damage the cable, or worse, in some instances pull the wires out of the plug. Indeed, some users have pulled the socket off the logic board! Use needle nose pliers or tweezers if you can access the plug, or nudge the plug with a small instrument to help loosen its grip.
    • Use force gently in removing parts. Separating upper and lower case takes some doing. Use a plastic tool (spudge) so as not to leave marks.
    • Refer to the screw guide when reassembling computer. Putting longer screws in the wrong place can perforate the circuit board.
Please do post back with further questions or comments.
    Cheers

  • PATA SATA connections of hd(s) for least working conflicts

Just setting up my new unit and attempting to avoid conflicts when editing movies, transfering/recording music and my daily "stuff" by not having unneeded programs messing things up. My hope is (but not certain) that upon working in a different area, I can boot to CMOS, change the boot device and thereby eliminate a lot of the stuff that loads that is not needed for work at hand. I have the ability to connect 8 devices (4 PATA & 4 SATA). Here's my plan, what problems or suggestions might anyone give me?
Primary PATA Master = Hot Swap HD, will insert my daily work programs drive and can use for data/backup with other tasks (ext bay)
Pri PATA Sl = not used
Sec PATA MA = DVD Burner (ext bay)
Sec PATA Sl = not used
3rd SATA MA = Hot Swap HD used for data with movie editing, backup and transfer of data (ext bay)
4th SATA MA = Video editing programs drive (int bay)
5th SATA MA = Music transfering and recording programs drive
6th SATA MA = Not sure yet
The 4th ext bay will have the Creative Labs Live IR Box for front connections
Will this work, or should I take a different path of just using the hot swap drives.

There is no support of hotswap for PATA chl's.
I recommend you install OS on Pri Master PATA disk and leave this attached all the time .
Same with optical drive on Sec Master PATA chl .
The swap all you need on the sata ports .
This way you also avoid Harddisk boot order to change each time from removing/adding 1'st IDE master .

  • PATA secondary driving missing with SATA as boot drive

My 865PE gave a strange CMOS error yesterday, and now I need to reset the BIOS settings.  My system boots from a SATA drive and has 1 PATA drive and 1 SATA drive as a auxillary drives.  Using the recommended settings of:
    Legacy Mode
    PATA only
    SATA keep YES
    PATA Channel selection BOTH
    SATA port defintion - P0-3rd/p1-4th
Allows system to see the CD & DVD drives, but not the PATA HD.
    I've also tried:
    Legacy & Native
    SATA only
    SATA keep YES
    PATA Channel selection - Primary
    SATA port defintion - P0-1st/p1-2nd?
    Legacy & Native
    SATA only
    SATA keep YES
    PATA Channel selection - BOTH
    SATA port defintion - P0-1st/p1-2nd?
    Legacy & Native
    PATA only
    SATA keep YES
    PATA Channel selection - BOTH
    SATA port defintion - P0-1st/p1-2nd?
None of these have helped.  I hate this flippin' motherboard.  Why is it so damn difficult to configure?  What should these settings be??
    Derek

    try these
    on chip                   native mode
    ata config               sata only
    sata keep enabled    yes
    pata keep enabled    yes
    pata channel           both
    combined mode        PO 1st / P1 2nd
you may have a HD failing also, test it with the manufactures diag progs, there downloadable.

  • Pata Keep? Sata Keep ?

well...i have searched this forum for an answer on that one ...
can someone plz explaine what it is ?  i havent got a clue if im gonna enable or not
when i dont know what it is

In bios under Integrated Peripherals, On Chip ATA Operating Mode set
    Native Mode
    ATA Configuration - SATA only
    SATA Keep enabled - yes
    PATA Keep enabled - yes
    PATA channel selection - both
Configure SATA as Raid - no
Legacy mode is used for Win9X, but will work with NT/2K/XP. It limits you to 4 drives, either 4 pata or 2 pata + 2 sata.
You normally do the "SATA only" if that will be your boot drive. If Windows won't boot, change SATA only to PATA only. You may have to reselect your boot drive after making changes to these settings.

  • 875P FIS2R 4 PATA HDs 2 Optical 1 SATA?

    OK, I have a MSI 875P Neo-FIS2R...
    The CURRENT Config...NO RAID
2x Maxtor 250g = ide 1 (boot drive is Master)
    2x optical drive = ide 2
    2x WD 160g= ide 3
    (I store alot of stuff)
I just bought a WD SATA 74g Raptor
I want to plug that SATA puppy into SERIAL 1 or 2  -OR-  Serial 3 or 4 and make this Raptor my boot drive and make minimal change the config of my current system!
And what drivers would I might need to install and make the Raptor my boot drive?
What is the least painless way to do this and make it all work in one big happy storage family? What should my bios settings be?
    Thanks all.

Put the WD on SATA1. Disconnect temporarily all the other hard drives. No drivers are required.
In bios under Integrated Peripherals, On Chip ATA Operating Mode set
    Native Mode
    ATA Configuration - PATA only
    SATA Keep enabled - yes
    PATA Keep enabled - yes
    PATA channel selection - both
    Do the windows installation.
Reconnect your other drives. Check and make sure the WD is selected as the boot drive.
If this doesn't let you boot, change to
    ATA Configuration - SATA only
After making/saving these changes you should go back into the bios on the first reboot and make sure the right boot drive is selected.

  • SATA and PATA issue

I currently have system set up running XP Pro on Neo-2LS motherboard and a Western Digital 80meg SATA hard drive. I want to add my old 80 meg IDE (PATA) harddrive.  However, I cannot get my regular IDE harddrive to be recognized in windows or in the BIOS.  My SATA drive still fine after I connected the second harddrive.  I have my Bios setting set to PATA and SATA in native mode.  I searched through the forums but have not found anything that worked.  Your suggestions on how to solve this would be much appreciated.
