2.6.30 kernel + powernow-k8 gives modprobe segmentation fault at boot

Dear all,
hi there, that's another (Archlinux) forum newbie.
I've been running the 64 bit flavour of Archlinux flawlessy on my asus l5d (1st generation amd athlon 64 3000+, 768 mb ram) until the recent kernel version bump (2.6.29.4 => 2.6.30).
From there on my system is experiencing segmentation fault while loading powernow-k8. Here you have the relevant dmesg extract

---[ end trace 7086b00b1b998fa9 ]---
The system continues booting surprisingly well, but everything gets hotter and hotter (I used to have it running at 800 mhz to reduce fan activity, as I don't really need full speed).
I only wrote to know if anyone has got into similar troubles - I had a look over recent kernel ChangeLog and I've seen some activity about powernow-k8, but not really something
I might have thought would blow everything up. I'd like also to be pointed at custom patches someone may have come up with  - I've no problem messing with kernel recompilation: if this doesn't get fixed in a new package, I'm thinking about reverting to 2.6.29.4 - or maybe some kernel parameters to cover the thing (at the moment and up until 2.6.29, II need "noapic nolapic").
Thank you in advance. Let me know if you need additional info.

I can confirm that powernow_k8 is broken somehow. I just got this when trying to change the governour. But I cannot reproduce it.

    Not with kernel but with glibc 2.1 - see thread "Oracle8 and

    One of the challenges in supporting Linux is the frequent changing of what ought to be stable public interfaces. We have found a number of changes in Red Hat 6 that affect the behavior of the compiler and applications built with the compiler.
    We plan to support RH 6 (and Oracle Linux 6) in a future release of Studio.

  • Streamer gives segmentation fault when trying to grab a picture.

    I'm testing streamer to grab output from my web camera.
    Creating video works fine.
    # streamer -q -c /dev/video0 -f rgb24 -r 3 -t 00:30:00 -o outfile.avi
    But grabbing an image, gives segmentation fault.
    # streamer -c /dev/video0 -b 16 -o outfile.jpeg
    files / video: JPEG (JFIF) / audio: none
    Segmentation fault
    I got the commands from http://tldp.org/HOWTO/html_single/Webcam-HOWTO/#COMMAND
    Am I doing something wrong?

    Some extra information: If I run xawtv I get a blank screen but I can take a snapshot by pressing 'j' or by using the remote:
    $ xawtv-remote snap jpeg full picture.jpeg
    This actually gets an image from the camera. When I take a picture or close the xawtv client it briefly flashes an image of what the camera is seeing before returning back to black/closing.
    I also get exactly the same error as on the link above.

  • Update of kernel: file in /etc/modprobe.d missing

    That it's missing I know. I tried to apply a fix to the "Warning! ehci_hcd should always be loaded before uhci_hcd and ohci_hcd, not after" by adding a file in /etc/modprobe.d according to some suggestions I found, but it didn't really fixing anything and hence I removed the file.
    Now when updating the kernel it complains each time about that missing file and I can't find any information to why and based on what it still looks for that file. How do I fix this?
    It doesn't affect the system as far as I can see, but the message is annoying and I prefer to clean this little mess up.

    OK, let me show the output of pacman:
    >>> Generating initial ramdisk, using mkinitcpio.  Please wait...

    As can be seen it still after I don't know how many updates look for a file I only once tested. So somewhere it's registered as needed parameter.

  • Kernel trap prevents normal reboot, can only safe boot

    Hi,
    I was trying to connect my mid 2012 MacBook Air 13" with Mavericks 10.9.5 to a projector that I previously succesfully connected.   In the meantime I mistakenly clicked to connect to an unknown AirPlay device, thinking it was perhaps the projector.  As I was not able to connect to the projector, I wanted to reboot the computer but it never did.  It can safe boot and I obtained a kernel trap log file.  I tried disk utility to repair permissions, everything seems ok, but still cannot boot normally.  If anyone can help me identify what may be causing the problem, I'd be awaiting your suggestions.  Thanks in advance!

    Thanks again for your suggestions Linc.
    I wanted to give an update as the issue seems to be resolved through running software update.
    Since I was able to use safe boot, I downloaded the 10.9.5 Combo Update file and ran the update.  Afterwards, the computer booted with no problems.  If anyone is experiencing repetitive kernel traps, I hope this will solve the problem for some of you as well!

  • [SOLVED] Arch with kernel 3.15.1 hangs/reboots in early boot

    Hi all,
    Recently I bought Asrock D1800B-ITX and I installed Arch without seeing any error messages.
    However, when I rebooted to the installed system, the kernel hangs after printing "Booting the kernel."
    What should I do next to troubleshoot this?
    PC spec:
    CPU: Intel Celeron J1800
    Mobo: Asrock D1800B-ITX (BIOS version 1.4)
    RAM: Transcend DDR3L-1333 2G x2 (passes memtest86+ 5+ times)
    SSD: Crucial m4 64GB (M4-CT064M4SSD1)
    What I tried to do:
    The installation method is the same as the Beginners' guide on the ArchWiki.
    Arch ISO 2014.06.01 written in a USB memstick by dd is used to install Arch.
    Both UEFI (tried first) and BIOS installation won't work.
    Changing the HOOKS variable in /etc/mkinitcpio.conf won't affect the symptom (tried "base udev ...", "base systemd ..." and "systemd ...").
    The kernel from linux-lts package (3.10.44 as of writing) and 3.14.4 (included in Arch ISO 2014.06.01) boots.
    The console output (tty0) from the kernel with "debug" appended to the kernel parameter is messed up like the image if framebuffer is enabled.
    If framebuffer is disabled, I got some error messages like this image("debug" appended).
    The serial console output from the kernel 3.15.1-1 with "debug boot_delay=5000 console=ttyS0,115200n8r" appended to the paramaters is below:

    Does the parameter maxcpus=1 affected to your system?
    Wow, with your paramater the kernel boots!
    However, the framebuffer is still broken (the same white artifacts, but many of them).
    I'm considering filing this issue as a bug in the Kernel Bug Tracker...
    I also tried unplugging all of the USB devices connected (the reason is this page, linked from the thread you mentioned), but no luck.
    Here is the serial console output (in the hope of potentially helping others):

  • Kernel panic: MacOS and Installation disk don't boot - WinXP works

    I've the following problem:
    I can't boot MacOS anymore. I tried all boot options and the hardware test shows no issues. Every time I try to boot MacOS i get a kernel panic.
    The strange thing is that I even can't boot the installation disc as I also get a kernel panic there.
    The only thing that works is booting Windows XP with bootcamp. So for me it seems not to be a hardware issue if Windows XP is booting and everything there works fine.
    All my data is backuped, so a new installation would be fine to me. But how? Any help is appreciated...
    iMac 20" Intel Core Duo   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   2GB RAM, 500GB harddisk, 256MB graphic

    Since booting off the installation disc doesn't work, it suggests a hardware problem that Mac OS X is more sensitive to. RAM is the most likely culprit, though any peripherals that are attached to the machine that the installation disc doesn't recognize as having the proper drivers may also be a problem. RAM can cause problems for Mac OS X when not to spec, or having a random bit error, which XP might not see unless doing a very intensive operation that runs into that same bit. Try replacing the RAM with high quality RAM from http://www.crucial.com/ that meets the specs of your machine on http://www.info.apple.com/support/applespec.html

  • How do I give less memory to my boot camp and more to my Mac HD?

    I had a friend set up my Bootcamp for me.  (He is great with this type of thing and I had no clue.)  I used to have a job where I needed to use Windows to run my work program.  So he gave a certain amount of my memory to that and left a certain amount for my Mac HD.  However, I no longer have that job and I am only using my Bootcamp to run one Windows program.  I rarely use it but still need it.
    I now want to make it so that I have more memory on my Mac HD and less on the Bootcamp.  If anyone can tell me how to do that it would be so greatly appreciated!  Thanks in advance!

    The only other way is to erase the Windows partition and start over.
    You have about the bare minimum partition size for Windows with 26 gigs now so a few extra taken back wouldn't really help much. You only have 9 gigs free space available so in theory you could only take away 6 gigs or so and still leave enough room for the OS to work.
    You need to have an extra 15%~ of extra space (on any OS) for any updates or installers to expand and install the software, they could take up to twice to three times as much room to expand from the original installer file.
    If you need more room then you may want to look at maybe a larger main HD, (especially if it's the original drive, gettin old) an external HD or even a USB stick for the extra room you need. A 32 gig USB thumb drive is around $30 now, (on sale) way more capacity then you would get back from the trouble of repartitioning.
    My 2 cents worth anyway........

  • PCI-GPIB Card with Visual Basic gives blue screen and re-boots PC

    The application makes the "ibsic" call then "ibln" to find devices on the bus. Running the VB program the first time is fine, but if you end the program and re-run a second time, you get a blue screen and the PC reboots when the program reaches the lines that make the first call to the NI-488 functions. If you close out of VB and then restart VB, everything is OK again.
    What is wrong?

    Hi,
    Here's an article that describes the most common blue screen when using VB:

    We are running a Solaris 8, iplanet 6.5 and when testing the command iasdeploy we receive a very strange error message. Does this fault derive from running the deploy command while the webserver is running?

  • " getline(cin,stream) "  gives segmentation fault error

    Hi
    In our application, we have a client and a server. Client and server communicate from network with inetd services. server listens the port with fd_set and get the the string with " select " as a command line argument. everything looks fine in communication but when the client sent a string over the network and server tries the read with getline(cin,stream ), application throws a segmentation fault error.
    Code:
    struct timeval t;
    t.tv_sec=60;
    t.tv_usec=0;
    fd_set rset;
    FD_ZERO(&rset);
    FD_SET(STDIN_FILENO, &rset);
    if(select(2, &rset,NULL,NULL,&t) == 0)
    return NULL;
    getline(cin, stream); *//application crashes here*
    How can we solve this error ?
    thanks for your kindly answers.

    Aykut wrote:
    Thanks for your addressing Andrew. i have already tried it. nothing have changed. well, i have read SunStudio11_Cpp_UserGuide and applied what it says. i think, my error is not related with standart compiler. this caused by 3rdparty tools. i am working on them right now.It's quite possible that your 3rd party tools are causing your problem, but given the dependencies between the C++ run-time libraries and the thread library, the link statement you provided earlier still has problems:
    /sunpro/11/bin/CC -xildoff /dev_obj/users/src/project/sample.o -L/dev_obj/users/src/lib -lcommonCode -L/3rdparty/sybase/ebf10536/lib -lblk_r -lct_r -lcs_r -lcomn_r -ltcl_r -lintl_r -L/usr/lib -lCstd -lnsl -ldl -lthread -lposix4 -lintl -lresolv -lsocket -lc -lcrypt -L/usr/perl5/5.00503/sun4-solaris/CORE -lperl /usr/perl5/5.00503/sun4-solaris/auto/DynaLoader/DynaLoader.a -L/3rdparty/roguewave/SUNPRO60/12s/lib -lctl12s8 -ldbt12s8 -ltls12s8 -L/3rdparty/roguewave/SUNPRO60/12s/lib -lstd12s8 -o /dev_obj/users/src/project/sampleYou should remove "-L/usr/lib -lCstd" from your link step, and probably "-lc" also.
    Also, your compile steps include the "-staticlib=libC" option, but your link step does not. That may or may not cause problems. You can try adding it to your link step, but try that after removing the extra library options, because that option probably does nothing when supplied to a compile-only step.
    Finally, what patch level are patches 108434 and 108434 at? The latest versions of those patches are 108434-24 and 108435-24:
    http://developers.sun.com/sunstudio/downloads/patches/ss11_patches.html
    In my experience, the patch levels have a huge impact on C++ run-time issues. Note that there are dramatic dependencies on the levels of those patches. Do not compile on a machine at 108434-24 and try running on a machine at 108434-14, for example. All your machines pretty much must be at the same patch level for these series of patches.
    If none of that works, and you can't isolate the problem to your third-party tools, you can try using the newer thread library, located in /usr/lib/lwp and /usr/lib/lwp/64, IIRC (I don't have access to a Solaris 8 box right now to check). You can add "-R/usr/lib/lwp" to your link statement and pick up the newer thread model.
    You should also explore upgrading Solaris. Solaris 8 is pretty much no longer supported and as you're finding out, there are some rather intricate dependencies under Solaris 8 that Sun really did a good job removing in Solaris 9 and especially Solaris 10.

  • T61p does boot up gives 3 beeps but will boot up if I take out and put back in the hard drive.

    Five days ago my T61p did not boot up and gave three beeps, (one long and two short?). I searched for this online and read that it could mean either the memory and or the motherboard was bad.  The laptop is out of waranty
    1. I took out the hard drive to see if I could savage it and my desktop was able to access it and it passed a virus check.
    2. Today, I reinstalled the hard drive to take the computer to the shop and it booted normally.
    3. I rebooted it and ran Lenova's system diagnostic tests. Everything passed except for the CDR\DVR\CD burner.
    4. After I finished the tests, it did not boot up and gave the three beeps again.
    5. I took out the hard drive and after about a half hour reinstalled it and it booted up normally. I am writing this thread using the laptop.
    Does anyone have any idea WTH is going on and possible solutions to fix it? After it did not boot up last Thursday, I started shopping for another laptop. It would be great to keep this one if I can.

    T61p > nVidia GPU > check the condition of the most likely culprit first.
    Furmark and Freestone are your friends, but they might be your motherboard's executioner as well.
    Proceed with caution and good luck.

Calls to shm_open()and mmap() succeed with mmap returning 0xff060000. However accessing this pointer gives a segmentation fault.
    I think I've got the compiler and linker switches set appropriately and have run out of ideas as to what to try next. I can see the named shared memory created under /tmp/.SHMD but it is always of size 0 (even when run as root). (Should this size reflect the desired size of shared memory?) I was thinking that I may need to use a 64-bit file offset of 0 and tried -D_FILE_OFFSET_BITS=64 to no avail.
    I'd be very grateful for any advice on this!
    Thanks,
    Bill Rizzi
    Here are the compiler switches:
    cc -c  -mt  -D_XOPEN_SOURCE=500
    -D__EXTENSIONS__ -g platform.c -o platform.oHere are the linker switches:
    cc -o version -g version.o
    -mt -lrt -lpthread -lm -lsocket -lnsl -lposix4 platform.oHere's the /tmp/.SHM* directories:
    $  ls -alR /tmp/.SHM*
    /tmp/.SHMD:
    total 32
    drwxrwxrwx   2 billr    other        185 Jul 24 11:30 ./
    drwxrwxrwt   7 root     sys          890 Jul 24 11:33 ../

    drwxrwxrwt   7 root     sys          890 Jul 24 11:33 ../Here's the source:
    char *shmName = "/Platform";
    int shmReturn;
    int lockCount = 401;
    int len;
    void *ptr;
    shmReturn =shm_open(shmName, O_RDWR,  0777);
    if (shmReturn < 0) {
      if (errno == ENOENT) {
        shmReturn = shm_open(shmName, O_RDWR | O_CREAT, 0777);
    assert(shmReturn >= 0);
    len = lockCount  *  sizeof(pthread_mutex_t); /* 9624 */
    ptr = mmap(0, len, PROT_READ | PROT_WRITE, MAP_SHARED, shmReturn, (off_t)0);
    assert(ptr != MAP_FAILED); /* ptr == 0xff060000 */
    memset(ptr, 0, len); /* segfault (even just *(int *)ptr) */

    I've got the same issue (A4Tech X-750) and have already uploaded my evtest dump to https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=24737. Hopefully it will be fixed soon. As a temporary work around i installed xf86-input-mouse xf86-input-keyboard and disabled xorg hotplugging by adding to xorg.conf:
    Section "ServerFlags"
    Option "AutoAddDevices" "False"
    Option "AllowEmptyInput" "False"
    EndSection
