2.7ghz or 2.9ghz iMac?
Hi, looking at iMac for home PC. 21inch sufficient but not sure to go for 2.7 or 2.9ghz option!?
Just got the 2.9 for Christmas. Well excitng. When wife rung apple to decide which one, they asked what will I be doing on it? Lucky for me, my wife said photos, and home video editing etc. so they recommended the 2.9 with dedicated graphics. If you are just using it for general web, music and lite gameing etc the 2.7 will be more than enough for anyone. But if you want to push it with graphics intensive games, video editing an such go 2.9!

Difference of 21.5" iMac 2.7Ghz over 2.9Ghz?
Does it worth the penny to choose 21.5" iMac 2.7Ghz over 2.9Ghz?
What is the major difference between these two? (hope not to mention the obvious hardware difference e.g. Nvidia GT640M vs 650M etc but rather appreciate for more technical cents of user experience for speed, multitasking speed, gaming (diablo III, starcraft II), photoshop etc software.)
I've no thought of getting MBP as i have existing 3 laptops (Windows base) at home for normal microsoft office usage.
This is my first Mac. Hope to get some valuable comments from experts.
Thanks. That's fine but playing Devil's Advocate you have to pay extra for the fusion drive and whether it's worthwhile will depend on your use of the machine. I suspect quite a few will buy the extra drive and not really need it.
What does hack me off with the latest iMac is you have to spend another £60 to load it with the Mac software that used to come bundled for nothing and another £60 if you want to load up your own software such as MS Word etc.
It just seems that despite all their wealth Apple are once again trying to extract even more money from their supporters. I will probably end up buying a new iMac as I consider its advantages to outweigh the cost but I do think that Apple is being a tad unfair to its loyal customers.
I am not anti-Apple as I already have an iPad3, MacBook Pro and iPhone. -
2.9ghz or 3.4ghz iMac?
Hi All,
Okay - This may seem like a small question, albeit - Its a hard decision I can not decide whether to go with
- the 2.9GHZ iMac 27" or the 3.2ghz iMac 27"
On top of that - I dont know whether yo go for ssd or fusion drive.
I use my mac for programming and hobbyist graphic deisgn, I am purchasing this mac to last me a long while and remain speedy.
Thanks again,
JackGlad taht helped!
I get these from MacTracker, a free database of Mac specs going back to the Plus. It is an application rather that a web-based resource so it runs fast, especially nice if you have a slow internet service
It's on the App Store but I had a few stability issues with that version about a year ago. After talking to the developer about the issue, I now get it directly from his web site:
http://mactracker.ca/
Finding the charts aren't obvious. Each model listing show available processors and, if the speed options look like a link:
then clicking it brings up the chart I posted. -
Hey,
I know this might seem like a very basic question, but it's sometimes the easiest questions that take the longest to answer, so let me give you some back story to my problem. Currently, I'm using the (Terrible) Lenovo Thinkpad T410, but I need to upgrade, and thought the 21.5" 2.9GHz iMac would be the perfect investment. I'm currently in College learning about various forms of digital design and marketing, and need a computer with an amazing screen. Since I don't have enough money for the Retina Macbook Pro, The new iMac is the best alternative in my books. So, I've been saving up my money and have just arrived at the amount of money I need (1,800$ taxes included), and I want to go buy it. I don't have a credit card, so I need to pay in cash. Anyways, I went to my local Apple store (Carrefour Laval) today, and they said they didn't have any in stock. Great. They said it could take up to 5 days for them to a recieve a shipment, but they can't say for sure. Amazing. Later on, I called them to see if they could give me a date where I could come in and pick one up (as in a guarunteed purchase), but they said they couldn't help me, and I should just call in advance. Beautiful. So, I did some Googling and found out that you can reserve products through the Apple store application. I downloaded it and found out that yes, you can reserve most products, BUT not the iMac. Wonderful. I went onto the Apple Online Store website where they have a chat box to see if that "person" can help me at all. The "person" said she understood why I was angry and just redirected me to the Apple Online Store. Genius. So, here I am, money-in-hand, but no way to buy the iMac. What should I do? I also went to various other electronic dealers in my area and they were also out of stock. Yay. Is there some way I can find out when they'll have it in stock without calling them every day, hoping for a yes?
TLDR: I want to buy a 21.5" 2.9GHz New iMac, but don't have a credit card (Can't buy online). I want to pay with cash, but my local store never has it in stock. Any tips on how I can get one without having to call them everyday?
Thanks,
BenThe new iMacs are still in short supply, and Apple are quoting 3-4 weeks for delivery.
So you will need to call carrefour every day! -
How can I revert to Snow Leopard from Mountain Lion on a 2013 iMac?
I have a brand new 27" 2.9Ghz iMac, bought a few days ago, equipped with Mountain Lion. I'm using it for recording, and at the time, my recording software and hardware are incompatible. On Snow Leopard, however, it all runs flawlessly. I know I can't simply revert to Snow Leopard, as there is some sort of firmware that blocks these types of downgrades. Can I partition the internal hardrive and install Snow Leopard and boot from that partition? I have no real use for Mt. Lion for the time being, so I wouldn't need to boot them both simultaneously or even go back and forth. I just want Snow Leopard...any help would be much appreciated. Thanks
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
You have different problems with a Late 2012 iMac and Snow Leopard:
1. The firmware doesn't allow you to run it.
2. Snow Leopard isn't compatible because it hasn't got the drivers for the hardware of the iMac. Furthermore, you can only run OS X 10.8.1, 10.8.2 or 10.8.3 on a Late 2012 iMac at the moment, because older versions haven't got the drivers it needs.
3. It's illegal.
As you can see, you can't run Snow Leopard natively. If this is a requirement, I suggest you to return your iMac and search a Mid 2011 iMac with Snow Leopard (there are some Mid 2011 iMacs that came with Snow Leopard, although most of them came with OS X Lion). If you don't find anything, buy a Mid 2010 iMac.
Another possibility is to buy Snow Leopard Server and install it on a virtual machine, but I doubt it's legal -
New iMac with iSight won't take image
Hello all, hope you can help.
At my place of work we use a standard image on all of our client Macs. I have used this same image to setup G3 iMacs, G3 Powermacs, G4 Powermacs, G4 Powerbooks and G5 iMacs. When one of our iMac G5s broke down we got a replacement which was the new 1.9ghz iMac with iSight. However when i image this machine, all i get is the apple for a few seconds and then the circle with the line through it.
When this problem happens, usually repairing permissions, resetting PRAM or those usual things tend to help, but not this time.
Does anyone have any ideas?Since this is a new machine, just to rule out a problem with the computer itself, I'd try installing from the discs to see if you have trouble doing it that way.

Getting my hands on some mac equipment
Hello everyone. I earlier posted about an Intel iMac for a friend of mine who had a question. You guys were great and helped, so I want to ask again. This time I'm thinking of getting my own mac. I've wanted them for a long time now, but never could, and still can't afford a mac. I'm 15 years old, and sold my Xbox 360 for $350 with two games, I also have my P4 2.8 GHz, 1 GB RAM 160/60 FX5500 Dual DVD+-RW PC to sell. I'm looking to get a 1.42 GHz G4 1GB 200GB Radeon 9000 or 9800 PowerMac, and a G3 or G4 based notebook used on ebay. I can afford this, and would rather do this than get one Intel mac mini, so Intel macs are out of the question for me. What I want to do is play around with media, run some iLife, do my Homework (its summer now), and fool with photoshop and maybe pro apps (I know a software dealer). So my question(s) to you are these:
1. Will that system run Tiger and Leopard fine with iLife
2. Will it be responsive enough to get stuff done and fool with
3. Will it run pro apps (Desktop only, laptop doesnt need to)
4. How much faster is my Windows machine
5. Does the speed difference make it better to stick with windows, or is the hit small enough to make the move
Thanks so much for all your help, and I'm looking forward to this.
Windows XP ProThere was no 1.42Ghz QS,if its that speed its ether upgraded or a MDD. Is it dual 1.42, which would most likely make it an MDD or an upgraded machine?) G4 (a now at least a three year old machine). Its hard to say, if its single it will be about the same as using a single 1.7Ghz or 1.9Ghz P4 depending on whether or not it has an L3 cache. If it is a dual MDD, its hard to say how you would compare them, it would depend on how many apps that you have that would use dual CPUs, which from the sounds of things, most would. The If it is a MDD G4 it has a x8 AGP slot, which is great, which means you can use the cards you mentioned or even a 9600, which is cheaper than the 9800, it can be found for around $65-70.
It will run Tiger just fine, it works well on my 1.2Ghz G4 equipped machine which is 6 years old, although upgraded, new CPU, video card (Radeon 8500) and 1GB RAM. My iBook with the same 1.42Ghz clock runs Tiger a little quicker, but it has a newer video chipset (Radeon 9550). A friend of mine has the same chip you do, and frankly I don't notice his machine being that much faster in many tasks, although he has a Nvidia GeForce4, which is a little better. Keep this in mind, raw clock speed is not all that matters, the PPC has some technology which makes some tasks far faster on a G4 chip than on a P4 of far faster clock speed. -
Logic keeps on crashing with E/W Play and Absynth
Recently Logic 9.1.8 (running on 64 bit 10.6.8) is crashing every 5 minutes or so.
I'm not doing anything particularly intensive (there are only 8 tracks or so) however I am using some 3rd pary plugins, namely "Play" from East West and Absynth.
It crashes seemingly randomly during playback. I've done far more complicated stuff than I'm doing now a couple of years ago (with the same plugins) and didn't have this issue.
The only odd thing I've seen is that Absynth is filling, at times, over half of the CPU bar at the bottom, despite it only playing one track. That said, sometimes it crashes during playback when absynth isn't in the music.
I'm using a 2.7Ghz quad-core 2011 iMac with (only) 4gb of RAM (though when it crashes there is still often in excess of half a gb free.
Please help me!

Why is iCal synching (and freezing)?
Gang,
I'm new to the forum. I tried to search but didn't find anything related to my question. If it's been covered elsewhere, please point me in the right direction.
I recently set up a new iMac at home, using Target Disk Mode to transfer the user accounts (2) and apps from my older Mac (running OS 10.3.9) to this one (running 10.4.3).
I run iCal on this computer and my work computer (a G5 running 10.3.9). I have a Home calendar and a Work calendar, and I back up each to a flash drive, which I use to back up the other computer (Work to the home computer, and Home to the work computer). Hope that makes sense.
In order to do this backup, I delete the calendar from iCal, then Import the updated version from my flash drive.
This has worked fine so far, but when I quit iCal, it pops up a message saying it is synchronizing, and it has a button that says "Abort and Quit."
Well, I don't know what it is synchronizing because I don't have .Mac, and the only synchronizing that I want to happen automatically is to my iPod, which it does just fine via iTunes.
The "Abort and Quit" button does nothing. I have to Force Quit iCal to get out of this.
Any idea what is going on? I can make normal changes to my calendars in iCal without this happening, but it has done it a couple times now after doing my delete/import bit from my backup file. Could there be a problem going back and forth between my work and home computers because of the OS difference or the way they handle backups (eg, iSync vs iTunes)? Or something screwy that got carried over from my old computer during the Target Disk transfer?
Hope this made sense. Any thoughts appreciated!

1.9GHz iMac G5 17" Mac OS X (10.4.3)Anyone? Bueller?
Every time I import my work calendar from my flash drive into iCal, when I later quit iCal, it says it is synchronizing my changes, and gives me an "Abort and Quit" button that does nothing. I have to force quit every time. And it has nothing to sync to, AFAIK. What the heck?
I was doing this on my older computer (G4) running Panther without any problems. Now with the G5 and Tiger, it's giving me this grief.
TIA,

Mail Won't Open Since Updating to Mavericks
Since updating to Maverick's, I've been having trouble opening Mail. If I restart my computer, I am able to open it one time. Then if I close it, I can't reopen it without restarting the computer. If I try to open it, I get the spinning beach ball when I put my cursor on the info bar at the top of the screen and I have to Force Quit to get it to stop. Does anyone have any ideas what might be causing this? I searched the forums and came up empty so if anyone can point me in the right direction I'd appreciate that too. I have updated my software to the most recent version, OS 10.9. I installed the Mail update, version 1.0, back in November. I am running on a 2.7Ghz Intel Core i5 iMac. Thanks in advance for any help.
I have the same problem.

How to best partition an external drive for my purposes?
Hello, please help,
I've just bought a Western Digital 'My Passport' 320Gb USB (no firewire) portable external harddrive for backing up my data prior to iMac repair.
I also plan to totally wipe my PPC iMac and reinstall it with Leopard.
I erased the external HD, zeroing out the data from it's previous owner, and reformatted it as Mac OS Extended (not journaled).
Now I realise that it might be even more useful than I'd imagined.
I'd now like to partition it so I can use Carbon Copy Cloner to create a bootable copy of my entire iMac while using the rest of the drive as a separate partition for just backing up data.
Ideally I want to be able to use the drive on both Intel and PPC Macs and even PCs, is this possible? How should I format the drive to achieve this?
I've heard I should format it as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) HFS+, what ever that is
I'm currently running OS 10.4.11 but plan to buy Leopard and install that after the wipe.17" 1.9Ghz iMac G5 (iSight)

For what you want to do, there is a mismatch between your PPC computer and the external drive that you bought.
With a few exceptions, a PPC Mac requires a firewire external drive for booting and will not boot from a USB drive, regardless of which OS is installed and regardless of the partition scheme and volume format on the drive. I also have an iMac G5, and mine will not boot from USB.
If you do exchange your drive for a firewire drive, do not get another Western Digital model to use with your G5 - many external WD firewire drives will not boot a PPC mac. See [this page|http://wdc.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/wdc.cfg/php/enduser/stdadp.php?pfaqid=1787]
If you want to keep your present USB drive, you can still partition it with one partition for a backup clone and another for "other stuff". With respect to immediate use for recovering your stuff after a clean Leopard install on the HD, I think that Migration Assistant will still work, though I haven't tried this. As for the future, the problems with a clone not being bootable are 1) You can't test it to see if it works OK, and 2) If you do need to restore from it you'd need to boot from "somewhere else" - I think you could boot from an install disk and use Disk Utility's Restore feature to clone it back.
With regard to PC access, a PPC mac normally requires an Apple Partition Map partition scheme on the drive for booting, and such a scheme does not allow for the FAT32 volume format that is readable by PCs. However in this case since your PPC mac can't boot from it anyway, you could partition the drive as GUID. This would allow the main volume to be formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) for the nonbootable clone, and would allow the extra volume to be formatted as FAT32. If you eventually got an Intel Mac, a clone from it to the main volume would also then be bootable.
But what I would do, if feasible, is exchange the USB drive and get a non-WD firewire drive instead.

Time Machine - "not enough space to back up" despite large drive
Hi,
I have a 2.7GHz Quad-Core 27" iMac from July 2011. It has a 2TB HD which I back up to an external single partition 2TB HD (WD MyBook) over Time Machine (TM). The iMac HD has about 1.4TB on it.
It was "just working" until about 2 weeks ago, when I got a message that says in essence "not enough space to back up: only 600GB available when 1.4GB is needed". There is one succesful 1.4TB backup. I get the error message hourly as it attempts to back up then fails. Previously there were multiple time stamped (houry, daily etc) backups but when I first got the error message, there was only one left, implying that TM deleted the earlier ones in its quest for more space.
As there is a 2TB drive to back up 1.4TB, there should be loads of space as each backup should just log the changes, not the whole drive.
However, TM is acting as if it needs the full 1.4GB free for each delta backup, rather than just space for the changes. This is new behaviour as it did not need this before.
I have googled the issue extensively, checked FAQs etc and found two potential causes.
The first is that I changed the name of my computer around the time that the problem appeared. This can apparently cause TM to not recognise old backups. I therefore deleted the old one and rebuilt my backup from scratch, hoping that the new name would be used. I was able to do one backup before the same issue appeared again.
The second is that the sparsebundle needs to be resized manually due to a bug, but I can't find the sparse bundle on the external HD, even using Disk Utility (this maty be because I am being very stupid - I am a recent Mac user and do not have much experience of digging into OS X's innards)
I am now at a loss as to what to do.
I would be very grateful indeed if anyone had any thoughts that they could share.

It's trying to do a near-full backup for some reason, and it's already deleted all but the last remaining backup trying to make room. It was probably trying to back up about 1.2 TB, since it adds 20% to the estimated size. That's likely your entire home folder.
The first is that I changed the name of my computer around the time that the problem appeared.
No, that shouldn't cause it. Apparently on some of the very first versions of Leoaprd, it did, but not since.
The second is that the sparsebundle needs to be resized manually due to a bug,
No, there isn't a sparsebundle on backups made to an internal or directly-connected HD. Those are used only for network backups.
What else did you do around the same time you changed your computer name? See #D4 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting for common causes.
I'd recommend turning TM off, erasing the drive and doing a "full reset" per #A4 in that same link. Then exclude most of the large folders in your home folder, per #10 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions. Then run a backup, and immediately run another.
If the second backup is more than a GB, use one of the apps in #A2 of Troubleshooting to see exactly what got backed-up the second time. That may tell us what's going on.
If it wasn't large, start removing the exclusions, one at a time. Run a backup (that should back up the excluded item(s), then run another and see how large it is. That should pinpoint the problem. -
Safari 6.0.4 Cannot Play Google Voice Voicemails
I've been troubleshooting this problem for far too many hours, and I am at a loss. I've tried everything other than reinstalling the entire system. Instead of doing that, I'm switching to Chrome and posting here in the hopes of finding a better solution.
The problem: Safari will not play google voice embedded audio voicemail files.
The voicemails show up with a play icon and a time; when you click on them, the graphic changse to an audio file progress bar, but the file never plays.
These voicemails WILL play in Chrome and they WILL play in Firefox.
More frustratingly, they will also play on my wife's iMac that is also running all updated software (OS X 10.8.3, Safari 6.0.4, etc.), and on my own iOS devices with Safari.
Background
I'm running 10.8.3 on a 2.7ghz core i5 27" iMac.
I have updated to the newest OS and all software updates.
I'm running the newest version of Flash and Java, and all are functioning properly.
I've uninstalled flip4mac and anything else that I thought might conflict with playing audio files.
I've reset safari numerous times, booted into safe mode, restarted numerous times, emptied every cache under the sun, repaired permissions, run daily/weekly/monthly updatesa in termina, and tried disabling all internet plugins. Nothing works.
Current Understanding/Knowledge/Conclusion
These files are NOT using any plug-ins to play, but are just using standard html5 audio tags. My wife's computer will play the files fine even with the quicktime plug-ins disabled. They DO use javascript to switch to the full audio player progress button, but I don't think javascript has anything to do with playing the actual file. Note: Firefox plays the files differently and it depends on Flash to play them; but I don't think that's the case with Chrome, and both Chrome and Safari are webkit browsers. Safari is unique in being a 64 bit webkit browser, and I'd be willing to chalk this up to it just not working in Safari – but it works just fine on my wife's machine.
Any solutions, ideas, or even troubleshooting tips would be welcome. As I said at the outset, the only next step I can see is reinstalling ML, and I'd rather just switch to Chrome than do that...Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It won’t solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of this test is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account. Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault in OS X 10.7 or later, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The "Guest User" login created by "Find My Mac" is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing. -
Safari, app store, messenger and mail all not working on mavericks
None of these will connect with the exception of mail connecting sometimes. Ive tried restarting, chaning the DNS go 8.8.8.8. and a few other things and nothing has workd. Im typing this from chrome which works totally fine and my other computers work so its not the network.
Any ideas? thanks.. Im on a new 2.9ghz imac.. or new from last year.
Thanks in advance! Id love to fix this!Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar.
Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then try the action that you're having trouble with again. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

All but one iPhone app mysteriously deleted after 2.02 update
Big bummer. Paid and free iPhone apps now gone. Probably about 20 in all. Anyone else have this problem?
