2.8 i7 chip with 8 gigs of ram, or a 2.6 i5 chip with 16 gigs of ram?

I'm considering buying a refurbished macbook pro. Of the two I'm looking at, one has a 2.8 i7 chip and 8 gigs of ram; the other has a 2.6 i5 chip with 16 gigs of ram. Which is preferable? I'm a writer; I do some photo and home video editing, and some gaming (wow)... and I would consider loading up bootcamp or parallels. both machines will sport a 512gb SSD.

I don't see running a ton of software simultaneously, though I've been known to have a metric sh*t-ton of tabs open at any given time (lots of research). For writing, I'll frequently have a word-processing program, a screen-writing program and a PDF open, and possibly youtube. I play mmo's... am I likely to regret it if I run boot camp and try to play any serious games (i.e., skyrim / last of us / cod)?

          I have a iMac 8.1 3.06 GHz w/6 MB Ram, and was running Mac OS X 10.6.8. My 500 GB WD5000AAKS was about 90% full. I had an issue with the admin password, it would not accept any of my known passwords. I ran for a while on the fingerprint reader I had, we have two users on the machine in our home. I tried many attempts to fix this problem without success I came up with a plan. That plan was a new HD, used a 2TB Samsung. plan worked like a charm. Installed a 4 GB Ram Chip and the new Samsung, formatted it, loaded Snow Leopard, and loaded what was on my Time Machine backup all was good.
          This was early July, then Lion was available I was happy with what I had, I had 1.450 TB of free space. So, what the heck, lets spring for Lion, that even went well for a not even 2 weeks, enough that I had several Time Machine backups.
           Then monitor goes flash, flash then I try a re-boot same gray screen with whirlie gig that I had when the the HD in my MacBook Pro died. Put the old 500 GB WD back in and all was fine, ran for a day. It was OK except back to no password and full. Went down to my local computer shops here in Rayong Thailand and sprung for a New 2 TB WDXXX, put that in, used my Snow Leopard disk to format and load OS X 10.6.8. I though that all was good, the load from Time Machine was slow and the time remaining was changing all the time, took about 3 hrs for about 300 MB that where on the LaCie.
          Now I have a password issue, however it asks for a password reset that it will NOT take and I don’t even get that now. All I get is the infamous “Gray Screen w/wirlie gig” but now for a new twist a circle with a diagonal line, like don’t go. Is this a DEAD HD? I plan to re-install the old 500GB just to systems check and if all is well I will take the “NEW” 2 TB WD back for replacement. The only problem is does the circle with the diagonal line mean something more? If so how does one recover Lion with no disk if that is what I need to do. Yes, I have tried control “R” on boot, nadda, no response, “mai dee” no good. Ideas, please.

I have an iMac 8, 1 that I upgraded Leopard to Snow Leopard. It was totally updated with the latest from Apple when I bought and tried installing Lion. The upgrade failed, shot my OS and I couldn't boot. Had the constant spinner on a grey screen.. did a format of the drive, hdd repair and everything came back clean... got back to Snow Leopard and all the updates on it again and then retried the Lion thing... same bs... dead duck. Crashed my system one too many times. I can't see where a few small changes, mostly app related can be classified as an OS upgrade and is not compatible with my iMac. I have the stuff running on my Mac Pro but have yet to notice anything impressive. I've always used F3 and really didn't require Mission Control. Just open you app folder for launch pad... duh? I use the hot corners anyhow. As far as Safari is concerned... as a power user, Apple missed the boat on that for me.. full screen etc.. Wow. I don't like the new Mail either..
As you can see/read, I'm less than impressed with this release from Apple but I own so many of their products that I will have to put up with it for now... somehow the MS logo should apply to this release Steve.

Ram issues 4022 Megabytes Usable Installed Memory with 8 gigs installed

I have a TOSHIBA Satellite P500 PSPGSU-11W00W with 8 gigs of ram installed by Toshiba. My over 4 gigs are showing as hardware reserved. I suspect there is a problem as that seems like too much to be reserved.
Im running win 7 home 64 bit
I tried swapping the two ram cards with no effect
Any ideas?

How do you tell what RAM chips your RAM has without seeing the actual chips?

I was wondering about the possibility of actually having Winbond chips in Corsair RAM as I have the Corsair TwinX 1024 DDR3200LL RAM and my system has been completely stable for a month and a half with no BSODs. Granted, I have not yet overclocked, but Prime 95 and Memtest86 have also run flawlessly. It seems that very few people have used this RAM with success. In another post, senator mentioned that some older Corsair RAM had Winbond BH-5 IC chips or some other decent chips as opposed to the current not-so-good chips Corsair is using. I swear that I saw Winbond on some screen on my PC, but don't remember where. I checked out Corsair's website, but didn't find anything useful at first glance. I pulled a stick of my RAM out to look at, as I thought that maybe removing the metal clip might allow removal of the heatspreaders, but it does not. Does anyone know any other way to tell what RAM chips you have without actually seeing the chips?

I have invested over 6 hours on the phone and with my Verizon Authorized Rep. trying to get the Bonus 1 Gig of Data for myself on the More Plus Plan. Cut and dry situation but today was told I have to wait about 7 days until they can get me "an answer" o

Basic question is why are any of the minimun 8 Verizon reps that I or my Authorized Verizon Rep (at Costco) spoke with unable to resolve a very simple, straightforward issue that should have been resolved in 15 minutes max. Instead I (a 14 year verizon customer) have been given the runaround and have invested over 6 1/2 hours in trying to get someone to acknowledge that I an owed 1 GB of Bonus Data on my new phone on our new plan. My wife got hers. I am just venting now as I intend on returning the phone tomorrow (I got it Thursday) and turning around and getting an identical new phone. This was suggested to me as an option by both the Rep who sold my wife her phone and the rep who sold me mine as that way I would not have to contiinue dealing with this ridiculous state of affairs (they indicated that my Free gig request was being sent to another department and that it would be about 7 days befor they get an answer). No I was considerate, etc. The root of the problem stems from the fact that when I went to get my new phone I asked the salesperson if I should sign up for the new plan or if my wife should do it the following day when she buys her new phone (also at a Costco but in a different state). The salesperson said it made absolutely no difference so I elected to have my wife do it. When she did the next day she got her free Gig and her salesperson told her that I need to call in to make sure I get the gig that I am entitled to as well. That's when the runaround started with the first call consisting of me basically advising Verizon of what the promotion consists of, etc.since they insisted that it was one gig per Plan, that there were no exceptions to this, etc. As mentioned they wanted to know where I got the information that it was one gig per qualifying phone. (Both the rep and her supervisor obviously were not aware of how Verizons heavily touted More Everything plan works). They told me finally that I needed to go back to the Costco where I got the phone. I did. The salesperson apologized numerous times to me for advising me that it made no difference who signs up for the plan or when. She then spent over two hours on the phone (with me next to her) attempting to explain to Verizon what happened, how it was her fault, and how I was clearly entitled to the Bonus Gig since I also had a qualifying phone. Finally she was transferred to someone who authorized the Bonus Gig (since I was clearly entitled to it) and who indicated that it might take 24 hours to show up on my new Plan. 72 hours later, no change, and the runaround continues some more. The only reason I even came to this forum was to let off some steam since no one could give me an answer.. It's clear that I am entitled to the Bonus Gig yet the last supervisor I spoke with told me that he could only pass the request on to another department via e-mail (no direct contact, etc. even though I gave him the name and employee # of the Verizon rep who indicated the Bonus was approved) and that an answer should be forthcoming in about 7 days. I was very cordial with everyone I spoke with as I understand that they take their direction from the top. The countless hours I have spent dealing with this situation is something that no-one should have to go through, particularily someone who has been a Verizon Plan customer since about year 2000. Everyone seems to agree that I am entitled to the free gig but no one seems to be in a position to help this customer. Its a horrible way to treat someone. I talked with the original saleslady today and told her I would be in tomorrow to turn in the phone and get a new one along with the gig I was entitled to. She said that would be fine and wouldn't be a problem but that she would be happy to try calling Verizon once again to try to resolve the issue. I indicated that I'm done with wasting time taliking with well-meaning and courteous (and I assume underpaid) employees who I assume are pretty much directed from above that any concessions they make, even if the customer is entitled to them, will reflect badly on their employee evaluations . Good thing I am retired or I would really be worked up. They only way I would consider even talking to Verizon anymore on this is if they were to waive the $60 in upgrade fees my wife and I paid for the new phones. the number of layers seem to multiply the RAM required in CS5. I think. the amount of RAM required to do photoshop seems to be a much-talked about subject and the subject of much variableness, and I wanted to nail it down a little.
I thought I would make a calculator that can estimate the amount of RAM required for a system to do, say, multilayer gigapixel content-aware-fill stuff in ps, something I know I would do a lot of. I also hear RAM requirements has changed in CS6. it would be interesting to characterize it.

you can tell how much memory us in use by doing [windows-logo-flag-key]taskmgr[Enter] or doing ctrl-alt-del and bringing up the task manager,
clicking on the prcesses tab,and looking for Photoshop.exe
if you don't see mem usage, do View,Select columns.
it's a lot of testing, I know, it should not take too long to finish. but I think it might help a lot of folks when they are trying to figure out how to spec their PS box.

I am not throwing away my data because someone is poo-pooing it.
CAF is just an 11x multiplier in every case I have used it. I am curious what the cs6 new content-[fill-in-the-blank] features use for memory. and I probably can't get anyone else to test it for me, because nobody seems to know how that I have met on the forums except me (I have been doing testing for 27 years and design/development for as long as I can remember - am I getting that old?).
the numbers in these cases are linear, for initial operations (I should qualify that on the page). as you said (according to my numbers), subsequent ops cause increased memory usage. I see this in soundbooth, to the point of out of memory error and crash.
I didn't do graphs because I didn't think it was worth it. I have proved my point to myself.
I think looking back I should have expressed more of what I found (and you guys have just stated it). page editing takes a lot of thought. I guess I missed that 1 necessary thing I noticed and didn't pay enough attention to - ps RAM usage growth from ops doesn't quit until you close it.
found out ps ram usage is not a compendium of all the features (maybe the major ones). the filters use pretty much no noticeable RAM.
adjustments don't either I don't think (haven't tested that).
I just want to help others who are trying to size a new box and don't know how much RAM to get if they are doing a 40x27 poster. and which type of machine: a desktop, laptop, or workstation (which can handle more memory). and which OS (windows 8 handles 512GiB max, windows 7 handles 192GiB max, windows server standard handles multi-terabytes of RAM). why? because I have to size one for myself! and I have some large images I will be working with.

Well it depends on the age. http://www.everymac.com/ should help you identify the age of the two models.
Apple may use two processors called i5, but newer models have different optimizations than older models.
The processor is usually not the main affect on speed. RAM helps, but barely unless everything is on an SSD already. Hard drive speed is usually the limiting factor of speed on computers. eSATA hard drives with higher RPM can often yield the fastest results because notebook hard drives tend to be slower that are not SSD, but for those you need either Express/34 or Thunderbolt based adapters.

It's not likely that you'll get 12 hours in reql life. Those benchmarks are set under very strict controlled conditions. Kind of like mileage per gallon claims on cars. If 16GB of ram is an option at all I'd highly recommend you get that. As far as storage 256GB isn't alot, consider storing some things on an external thunderbolt real

I have now seen that one of the options for exporting from Premiere 6.5 is Adobe MPEG encoder. So Do you guys think it would be a good idea to do it with that, Or Would it be better AVI or DV AVI compressor from Premiere before making the DVD?
