2.8Ghz Prescott CPU

I recently received this MoBo from MSI as a warranty replacement for an SIS655 Max MoBo. The board came by itself with no cables or drivers (no box for that matter). I have no way of knowing what BIOS version is currently installed. I purchased a 2.8 prescott CPU and Thermaltake 420W PSU and the system hangs at CPU init. (4 RRR D-Bracket).
My question is this - if the wrong BIOS is installed would this cause the system to hang at this stage. I am very frustrated as I have had no PC for 4 months now and everything that can go wrong is. I am assumming that the BIOS is the one that normally ships with this board. Would getting the BIOS flashed with the correct veraion fix this problem as everything else has to be ok as I have spent 4 days on it now.

First of all take a Deep Breath .....As I realize that you must be Fuming right now......Believe me, We will Do Everything possible to get your System Up and Running.. But the First thing we must establish is if your Motherboard Supports the Prescott P4...But Whether you want to hear this or not, I must tell you that there have been WAY To Many Issues with the Prescott CPU's (I wish you had bought a Northwood, As the Northwood is FASTER, and Runs about 15C Cooler)....But on to your Problem. Yes if you Do Not have the "Newest" or Latest BIOS Rev. your PC will NOT POST . And the reason for this is the Motherboard is NOT recognizing the Prescott, Because the Microcode for it is not written into the Older BIOSES.
Now, one thing that you can try to do is to try to Force the PC to Load the BIOS by Pressing and Holding BOTH the Ctrl and Home Keys. And if you do get it to Load the BIOS, you can try to Increase the DRAM Voltage to 2.6 Volts.......But Keep in mind, If you Cant get this PC to At least Load the BIOS, You are Going to have to Either Borrow a Northwood P4, or Better yet, See if you can Return the Prescott For a Northwood.....But try to force the BIOS Load First.............Sean REILLY875

  • Why half size AGP card with Prescott CPU?

I have a P4 2.8Ghz Prescott and a Mega 865 Deluxe. The system should be able to support this cpu (with the 1.2 BIOS); see website http://www.msi.com.tw/program/products/slim_pc/slm/pro_slm_cpu_support_detail.php?UID=547&kind=4
However, this website mentions that it only works with a  "Half-Size AGP card only". Why is this?
Does it mean that a Prescott CPU won't work with the onboard video?
Or.. is the half size (or low profile) AGP card recommended because of cooling improvement.
Thanks in advance for any help!
(I am wondering if it will be necessary to buy an extra AGP card; and which one)

Please search the forum before aksing questions, since this has been asked, and answered before ....
    (always wanted to say that)
Anyway, to spare you the search
With full and half size AGP cards they mean physical height of the AGP card, you can buy a full size or half sized one.
Officially MSI does not support full sized AGP cards, and it is suspected to be a power issue. Most of the high end full size cards these days have one (or two) extra power connectors (molex), and thus require a lot of juice (power). And you only have 250 Watts available.
The prescott has no problem with the onboard graphics adapter what so ever, the statement on their website is just about add-in AGP cards.
You can search around this forum, for configurations that other users use. So that you can get a feel of what will work. I for one can tell you a Radeon 9800 Pro will probably work. It will also be a bit of a hassle to get it in, but it does fit .... Also be warned that if you need a PCI card in there next to the AGP one, you are in for a challenge.
Btw, It is a bit unclear to me if you have or have not not bought your system yet, but the prescott 3.0 Ghz and 3.2 will also work, and these do also not show up on their website as being supported.

But how can I test my system upgrade readiness before the 1 yr warranty expires?

  • WOW, Prescott CPU Temp drop

Well my system, Prescott 3.0 not overclocked, was running 45 at idle. I didnt like that. So I went the cheap route and got a CoolerMaster Aero 4. My system at idle is now at 34, as reported by speed fan!  :biggthumbsup:WOW that is a huge drop I think

The only way I know to put a load on it is to play a game. But I cant see the SpeedFan icon when I do that. So how do I put a load on it and see/record the temp? Some kind of benchmark utility?
As far as my temp goes I am very happy. Before I put the Aero 4 on my Prescott I was just using the stock Intel cooler and my idle temp was 45. When I took the intel cooler off I noticed there were parts of the cpu that had no thermal grease at all, you know the little pad of grease that comes on the stock intel cooler. So I cleaned the cpu with alcohol using a clean rag. Then I applied Arctic Silver 5. Now my idle temp is down to 34-36 depending if my house A/C is running. I am very impressed with this little cooler,

Sounds like they didn't get everything worked out in the BIOS prior to release.  Ever download and install a new point release of something and feel like it hasn't been thoroughly tested?
That's because many point releases are really beta releases.  It's evil in many ways, but it's the way of life for many software vendors/shops.

  • Definitive list of what boards support Prescott CPU

I was just look around and found this. It look like some boards support the Prescott better than others1

  • ESATA Card for 1.8GHz Single CPU (Late 2004) Power Mac G5 Tower

I have an unusual issue. I purchased the LaCie d2 quadra 500GB external hard drive. What attracted me to this drive is the ability to interface it by USB 2.0, Firewire 400, Firewire 800 or eSATA. Of course, eSATA looks like it would provide the best throughput. So, I asked the rep at MacMall to suggest a compatible eSATA card for my machine. He suggested LaCie part number 710372 which is a PCI card with two eSATA ports on it.
When it arrived, I checked the specs on the package and found that it requires a "PCI slot (32 bits 66Mhz; PCI 2.3 compliant interface)". When I checked Apple's web site it looks like my machine has the following caution "Warning: Do not use PCI cards that function only at 66 MHz in the 33 Mhz PCI slots. Damage to your equipment could result...". So, I called LaCie support to check this before I installed the card. LaCie support checked with their technicians and I was finally told that this card did have the ability to operate at 33 Mhz but it wasn't listed on the package.
So, I installed the card and then brought my machine up. It seemed to run normally. So, I attached the eSATA cable to the hard drive and then to one of the ports on the card. So far, so good. Then, I powered the drive up and it appeared on the desktop. I then fired up Disk Utility and erased the drive. That worked fine. Next, I tried to copy files to it and that worked.
As a matter of course, I always like to erase a new drive with the "write zeros to all sectors". This verifies that every sector on the drive can be written to without any problems. I don't know if this really accomplishes anything. But, it would seem to validate that the drive works fine.
So, I started this process knowing that it would take a long time for a drive this large (500 GB). This seemed to proceed normally as I checked it from time to time. But, after a number of hours (with only 13 minutes remaining), the entire system hung. I could not do anything except press the button on the front of the machine.
After the machine came back up, it seemed to run normally. But, as I started running applications, I could tell all was not well. The system hung from time to time. Each time, it took 10 or 15 minutes to become responsive.
Finally, I got disgusted and powered everything down and removed the suspect PCI card. Since I did that, the machine works fine.
The drive is now connected using the Firewire 800 cable and seems to work fine. But, it doesn't seem especially fast. I have other drives attached using Firewire 400. Is it possible to have drives attached to both Firewire busses and still get the performance advertised by Firewire 800?
Also, is there an eSATA card that will work in my machine and still provide the advertised eSATA performance (1.5Gbits per second/150MB/second)?
With the drive connected to the Firewire 800 port, it honestly doesn't seem any faster than any of the other Firewire 400 drives.

I didn't say what to do, only options and tried to point out WHY.
This is what I know, these are possible explanations. And alternatives.
most PCI cards are NOT a fixed 66MHz, very very small market. And most PCI slots are not 66MHz only. The Blue G3 and Xserve have used 66MHz PCI.
Your card should work. eSATA is slightly better than FW800. But you are going through a 'bridge' between the drive and the PCI card, usually Oxford 924 chipset.
A direct SATA case for $68 would let you use two drives and get the 75MB/sec writing speed, which is about as much as you can expect from most SATA drives and in G5 anyway.
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/MESATATBEK/
And here is a nice 500GB drive for $99
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Maxtor/7H500F0/
Connect it to one of the eSATA ports on your LaCie SATA PCI card.
And yes, you have the single drive now.
When installing cards and drives, reset-nvram - either zap the pram from cold startup or boot into Open Firmware and type the reset-nvram and reset-all from there.
I know lots of people use and are happy with LaCie and D2. I am not one of them (I use to buy LaCie when it was Quantum back in early 90s).

  • PT 880 Neo series MoBo & Prescott 2.8 CPU

Okay, my question is just to confirm my conclusion.  I just got my P4 2.8 ghz Prescott CPU and an MSI PT880 Neo-LSR MoBo.  I got everything put together and pressed the power button & nothing happened.  Tried reseating the RAM and that didn't work either.  I looked on the D-Bracket and it was showing 1, 3, & 4 LEDs were red and 2 was green.  I looked in the user manual and it said something about the memory detection test.  I know that my RAM is fine and nothing is wrong with it, oh yeah, I have two sticks of 256 megs of PC2100 (266).  I then looked on page 2-3 and looked at the chart where it looks like DDR 266 won't work with an 800FSB CPU.  I would appreciate it if anyone can confirm this for me.  Hopefully this will be quicker than holding on the phone.  Thanks in advance.

You must flash your bios because from what i have read the pt880 is not prescott ready.  I had the same problem with the pt880 and the 2.8 prescott.  So my best bet is for you to go out and borrow your friends cpu, installl it and then install the live update, and finally put your cpu back on.  Right now im stuck with my buddy's cpu and has my chip.  Hope this helps.

  • Intel Celeron D CPU

    I have a MSI 845E MAX HT Ready (ver.2) mainboard. Can I use a Intel Celeron D processor ??
And if NOT support this CPU, when can be able to update BIOS to newer version, whitch supports this CPU ???
    sry 4 my english

Yes, some 845 chipset boards supports Celeron D / Prescott.
The 845 chipset itself may have the support but the 845 chipset is located on a motherboard that may not have the support, as in your case.
These are the MSI 845 boards that supports Celeron D/ Prescott:
    - 845PE Neo 5.0B1 AMI 7.2 OK OK OK NO NO NO NO (Celeron D 533mhz support)
    - 845GVM-V 100 Award 1.0 OK OK OK NO NO NO NO (Celeron D 533mhz support)
    - 845GEM (PCB 5.0) 50A Award 7.2 OK OK OK OK OK OK OK (Celeron D 533mhz   + Prescott 800mhz support )
    - 845GVM (PCB 5.0) 50A Award 7.2 OK OK OK OK OK OK OK (Celeron D 533mhz + Prescott 800mhz support )
If MSI decide not to update a prescott bios on your board-model 845E MAX, it is probably because MSI thinks the board is not fit for this task for some reasons, could be the construction /power needs / stability is not enough to handle a prescott cpu.
PS, Change or sell the Celeron D and the find yourself a Northwood 2,8Ghz /533mhz cpu if you still can find one. That one you should have some oc potenitial for around 3,2Ghz or so (or Buy another motherboard ).

  • Prescott or Northwood?

Hey guys - i'm just posting cause i was thinking and i figure someone here might be able to help me out - I have a P4 Northwood 3.0ghz right now and i can OC it to about 3.51ghz stable, after that it just won't boot. However, i'm wondering if a Prescott CPU - 3.0ghz/3.2ghz would be able to overclock higher? My specs are below. Let me know your thoughts...
    PS
Cooling is definately not an issue, my HSF keeps my proc running at 3.52ghz at 27c idle. Thanks!!

prescott will clock a lot higher...
dunno where kingfisher is gettin his sources for this one...
friend of mine hasn't overclocked since like... pentium 120...  (oooooold school)
he put his new 3.2ghz prescott in his new 875 asus board, and just set percentage in cmos setup...
boot into windows...  i asked him how high he had it overclocked... he shrugged "dunno"...
i run CPUz he's got it at 3.8ghz... and there is no instability in it.... stock voltage...
     (he wasn't even trying)
he wouldn't let me mess with it   (was using corsair 3200 too... so he was clockin that really well too...)
had like 6800 in sisoft memory bandwidth benches     he didn't know if that was good or bad lol

  • Which board is better for P4 3.0E Prescott

Hello Guys! just wanted to ask which board is better for P4 3.0E Prescott
     MSI 865PENEO2-PFISR
    or
     MSI 865PE NEO2-PFS
    Thanks in advance......

Basically the same MoBo ( only the Firewire/SATA raid is differant )
    http://www.msi.com.tw/program/products/mainboard/mbd/pro_mbd_detail.php?UID=528
You´ll be fine with either of them.
Most people think bios 3.8 or 3.A is best for prescott cpu´s ( lower reported cpu temp)

  • Is the 3.4 Prescott a worthy UpGrade

I was thinking of upgrading my cpu ...and from what I found the 3.4 Prescott is the last one for the 478 socket....(found no info for a 3.6 ....only on the 775 board?) and was wondering if any one here has personal exp.....with the 3.4 Prescott cpu for the 478 socket.... Is it overclockable to....say to 3.8? and do u find any speed gain from the 1MB cache.... THX...

    Quote
I heard you could get 3.7ghz out of a 3.2, so you most likely don't need a 3.4.
I can get 3.61 out of my 2.8e no problem
    Quote
and deffinately not a prescott cause they run too hot
Prescotts get a bad rap for this . Everyone( including me) thought that they could just plug and play with a prescott. Then they started to complain about the heat issues . Well after doing some research I found out that Intel specificallyrecomends a " thermally advantaged" chassis
While they do run hotter than a Northwood managing this heat is really not that hard. Here is a good article about Prescotts ( co authored by yours truly   )
    http://www.overclockers.com/tips1179/
If you are considering a Prescott you need to make sure you have the latest Bios that supports the prescott micro code, A powersupply that has at least 22 amps on the 12 volt rails and good airflow thru the case
    Good Luck

  • 661FM-L CPU Compatibility?

I just bought a MSI 661FM-L mainboard and a Pentium 4 3.0E gHz retail.  I have scoured the manual and the msi site and do not find the difference in a Prescott 3.0 gHz and a 3.0E gHz.  On boot up, you get the CPU not supported message.  The Award Bios is v3.7
Does anyone know how the "E" processor is different?  Can I get this cpu to work on this board?
    Thx!

It should handle a 3.0E ( prescott cpu) with bios 3.7, according to the cpu-spec.

    Re-seat cpu once more.
If no go, try to borrow a northwood cpu and see if that works and if it does, update to latest bios 3.8,  before installing the prescott cpu.
You can D/L and install "MSI Live update" to get the latest biosversion ( choose dos-disc alternative when asked)
Also give full systemspec. incl powersupply spec. ( watts and 3,3+12v amps )
