2.98GB .m4v File won't import into iMove 11?

I ripped a family movie off a DVD converted from a VHS tape, using Handbrake into an .m4v file and have tried twice now to import it into iMovie 11 without success.  Is there some kind of limit that would make this fail?  It starts building a .mov file in the iMove projects directory and I can see the file size increase until the very end (2 hours later) and then it gets deleted.  Ugly.  What am I doing wrong or are my expectations of iMovie too high?

So after waiting all this time, iMovie simply deleted the file the end without adding it to my event.  No error.  No joy and almost 13GB.

  • Movie file won't import into iMovie

I have a digital camera that records video (Nikon Coolpix L4). It saves videos as .mov files. When I try to import them into iMovie, it gives me an unknown error. I have tried converting the .mov files into another format using MPEG Streamclip, but that also reports an error.
Any suggestions? Is this fixable or does it have something to do with my camera, not my software?

    Hi
iMovie 1 to 6 is for miniDV Cameras and connects only via FireWire.
All other material has to be concerted.
.mov - is no specific file type - just a container.
Has to be converted to streamingDV to be imported into iMovie 1 - 6.
If You try iMovie'08 it might be able to import.
Or use MPEG Streamclip. Why this doesn't work I can't figure.
May be You need to buy and install: Apple mpeg2 component - BUT NOT SURE at all.

  • .avi files won't import into imovie 09!

    Hi,
I make sims movies/machinima and I recently updated from imovie HD to imovie09.
The recording features on sims 3 save the files as .avi, and I have recently realized...
I cannot import them into imovie 09!
There are around 300 of these in game recorded videos, and i don't really want to convert them ALL seperately.
Is there an app/ add on that would let imovie09 import .AVI files? or is there another (reasonably priced0 editing program that i could use to edit movies? ( preferably with chroma key/ green screen )

Well, here is a hail Mary thought...
Try using the Mac's finder to convert to a codec that your Mac can handle. Just right click on the file and encode away.
    Sometimes works, sometimes doesn't.
Here is a link showing how to do it.

  • CS3 .ste files won't import into CS5

I recently upgraded from CS3 <on XP> to CS5 <on Mac Snow Leopard.> I expected a learning curve, but I also expect that software works as specified.
My CS3 site definition files won't import. I followed the instructions in DW help to the letter:
Manage Sites---> Import--->browsed to .ste files, selected Choose, and nothing happens. The sites don't show up in the list in the Manage Sites dialog box. ARE THERE MISSING INSTRUCTIONS? IS THERE A PLUG-IN MISSING?
After I've tried to import them, the .ste files are then 'greyed out' from the list of files. It doesn't matter what source the .ste files come from: jumpdrive, email, etc.
Note:  This is a new, fresh & clean Snow Leopard install, and my files were transfered at the Apple Store. The CS5 install was just last week as well.
I have client sites to update. Please help!

Yes, I did export the .ste files from XP/CS3. I saved them to a jumpdrive, and also emailed them to my Macbook. I know some people don't read or follow instructions before they ask for help, but that's not the case.
This seems to be a CS5 issue in Mac Snow Leopard. Important note; I was able to import the .ste files to an XP machine running a demo version of CS5. I've moved site files before with CS, CS2, and CS3, on XP. Never had an issue with those flavors or that OS.
On my Mac, after I attempt to import the .ste files, they become 'greyed out'. All other file types (.html, etc.) also appear 'greyed out'. It seems like there's a missing step in the instructions?
Update:  I right-clicked the .ste files in my Downloads file, and chose 'Open with Dreamweaver'. THEN they imported successfully, and prompted me to choose the root folders. (If nobody answers the front door, knock on the back door!)
Thanks to all for your suggestions, but I think the problem is behind me. Long live the right click!

  • Certain mp4 files are not importing into iMovie

I downloaded various files from the video page at a blog website [ http://www.911blogger.com/ ]; they're mp4 QuickTime. They won't properly import into iMovie, and quickly return a "An Unknown Error Has Occured" message box.
This is confusing, especially since iMovie can make mp4 movies. And since mp4 is a QuickTime format -- and QuickTime is made by Apple, who also makes iMovie.
It doesn't matter what size of file; none import. I asked the guys who own/operate the blog website if they put any special locking features on their video file downloads from their podcasts, and they said they (paraphrasing) "didn't do anything except use an iPod video converter" or something to that effect.
    So, any idea's?

I have QuickTime 7.1.1 installed, with a license for QuickTime Pro.
QuickTime Pro shouldn't affect the ability to import to iMovie. All QuickTime Pro does is enable certain movie editing commands in QuickTime Player. It doesn't add any codecs or new elements to QuickTime.
But third-party QuickTime codecs could certainly be affecting iMovie 6's ability to import a movie. If any are installed, they should be temporarily removed and the Mac restarted.
    They are discussed here:

  • Why won't my video won't import into iMovie. There is a red ERROR message underneath clip.

I just imported 40 out of 43 clips of HD video from my JVC HD Everio camera into iMovie '11. It's my first time using either equipment for editing. I selected import all but only 40 of the clips successfully imported. 3 of the clips were not able to be imported but I can still play the clips fine from the import window. The clips all have red error messages underneath them. This is an issue that I've seen posted other places online but it doesn't seem to be resolved. It's very frustrating for me, I've been researching online to try to fix this for hours now. The closest I have come to a solution involved deleting extra 3rd party plugins from my quicktime folder however I don't have a folder named "Quicktime" in my Library. So I don't know what to do. Please help!

The error message appears under video clips already imported into iMovie. Like in this screenshot http://km.support.apple.com/resources/sites/APPLE/content/live/VIDEOS/0/VI57/en_ US/imovie-start-poster.jpg on my mac out of the 6 clips shown per row, only 5 of them have the word "imported" underneath them in white letters and then one of the clips has the word "error" underneath it.
I don't think it's a corrupted file because yeah I can play the three clips just fine. The page that I read that had that fix in it (deleted plugins) was here: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/1893021?start=0&tstart=0 The correct answer is near the bottom of the page and was posted by iphonejunky. Maybe the fix would be that simple but like I said, I can't find a folder named quicktime in my library. I don't know if I'm just stupid or what.
I don't think I have Flip4Mac installed because I never consciously installed it. I use VLC for playing most video. The clips imported are all .mov

  • Movie clip won't import into iMovie.

    Hi
Ok at the risk of sounding like a complete dumbo...
I have a JVC Everio G 30Gb Hard disc camcorder. I can't get my clip to import into iMovie. All I get is the following message...
"The file could not be imported: The file “File Name Here” can’t be imported; QuickTime couldn’t parse it: -2048"
Can anybody help or know some way around this?
I sorta figured that like iPhoto, where you can pretty much download from any big brand digital camera, it would be the same with iMovie.

Hi iMovieNewbie - welcome to the forum!
Many people have your ailment!! The problem is that your camera records in MPEG2 format which is really not compatible with iMovie. iMovie's native format is DV, which is designed to be a no-loss, editable format. MPEG is really just a viewing format.
There are workarounds, but they involve converting MPEG into DV, for which you will need:
    MPEG StreamClip (free):
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/video/mpegstreamclip.html
    and
    Apple MPEG2 PlayBack($20):
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2/

  • M4V clip won't import into FCP

I'm trying to import an M4V file into FCP, but it wont. Is there anyway to turn it into a Quicktime file or some other format?

I had the same problem. Frustrating. I fixed it by pulling the video into Compressor and changing it to an Apple ProRes422 codec. That works fine for FCP. I wish it would handle the file directly like Premier, but at least this works. Good luck.

  • Red files won't import into CS5

    Hi all,
I shot some footage yesterday on a Red Epic. The files are .rd3. Premiere Pro CS5 is suppossed to have native support for Red files, but they won't import - I get a "file import failure" message. The error says "unsupported format or damaged file"
    The files aren't damaged.
    Any suggestions? Thanks.

CS5 supports pre-Mysterium-X RED One media.  To import later builds and media from Epic/Scarlet, you need the RED Epic importer.
    http://labs.adobe.com/downloads/redepic_importer.html
The new CS6 will have support for this built-in.

  • Longer movie files won't import into iPhoto

I have a Canon PowerShot SD950IS 12.1MP Digital Camera which takes surprisingly video, and I was surprised to see that iPhoto even imports movies to begin with, but there's a glitch. Shorter movies import fine, but anything longer than a minute or two never finish importing. The camera says busy, and eventually, iPhoto stops, but the movie never shows up in the iPhoto window. Is there a limit to video size in iPhoto?
Also, I would like to import videos and photos into separate applications. Is there a way to tell iPhoto not to import or delete movies from a camera, and only work with picture files? That would simplify just using the Canon software for the movie portion (which does work).
One other thing, does iMovie work with USB now, or is it still Firewire only?
    Thanks!

If you use a card reader to mount the memory card from your camera on the Mac's desktop, you can copy your videos to the hard drive by dragging and dropping, then import them into iMovie or whatever.
This suggestion presumes that when you connect the camera directly to the Mac, like most other recent Canon models, the card inside it doesn't mount on the desktop. Using a card reader will mount it. If the card does mount on the desktop when you connect the camera, just drag and drop the movies from it to the hard drive.

  • PSD duotone files won't import into Aperture

I have files that are saved as PSD and are duotone files. When I try to import in Aperture, I get an error and the files don't import. What's up?

I usually convert them back to a color model that aperture understands - like rgb - technically it's non destructive if you are not using spot inks in your output.

  • MPG files will not import into iMovie

I have some video I shot with a Sony Handycam that I want to import it into iMovie. When In iMovie I can see the MPV files but they are grayed out. I moved them from my work PC. They play fine on the PC. Have they been recoded in some way? When I try and open them in quicktime on the mac I get a message that says they are "not a movie file". I did transfer the files via a thumb drive, but I can't see that causing any problems. Any suggestions?
    Thanks in advance

I have some video I shot with a Sony Handycam that I want to import it into iMovie. When In iMovie I can see the MPV files but they are grayed out.
Finder level (i.e. "Import Movies...") files are not converted as part of the import process. Only files imported via the "Import from Camera..." are converted to iMovie '08 edit compatible compression formats. As "muxed" compression formats are not edit compatible in iMovie '08, they cannot be imported at the "Finder level" and so remain "grayed out." ("Muxed" formats contain blocks of audio and video data interspersed in a single stream to provide spatial synchronization while the QT engine is based on temporal synchronization of audio and video contained in separate, parallel "tracks" of data.) Your solution here is to either convert your files to DV, AIC, M-JPEG, Photo-JPEG, MPEG-4, or H.264 files for "Finder" importation or "image" your files so they appear as if they are on a camcorder and let iMovie '08 import/convert the files for edit processing.
I moved them from my work PC. They play fine on the PC. Have they been recoded in some way?
MPEG-2 is a "playback" only format a far as QT is concerned and even then it requires the QT MPEG-2 Playback component ($20) be installed to work. AC3 audio is also not supported by the QT embedded structure and also requires an additional third-party component be installed.

  • QUICKTIME DVCPRO HD file will not import into iMovie 06HD

Hi...I've searched all over the web. Maybe one of you can help.
Basically I got a clip from a movie I did from the editor. The movie was edited in Final Cut Pro. I don't know versions or anything specific about his system.
I downloaded the DVCPRO HD codecs and i am NOW able to play the footage on my computer through QT Pro (previously I wasn't able to view the clips without those codecs).
However, when I try to import/export/beg the file to go into iMovie HD 06 so I can cut it into my performance reel, it only turns up as a white screen with audio in place: there's no picture but you can hear everything perfectly.
Any ideas? I've tried so many things.
Is it possible to burn the file to a regular dvd, reimport it and it will magically work? I'm going out to buy dvds now to see if that's possible.
    I'm running leopard, MBP 200gb
    Thanks

    hey there mmmm1234,
iMovie06 works w/ DV 25(MiniDV, DVCPro & HDV-720p/1080i). it has no capability for DVCProHD(DV100). see if your editor buddy can give you the clip in one of the listed formats for iMovie. even if he gives it to in the HDV format, you'll still only be able to burn SD DVD w/ iDVD, so it might be best to ask for the clip in an SD format.
    good luck.

  • My MPEG1 movies won't import into iMovie

I have two cameras. My Canon saves the movies in .AVI format and is able to import and be edited in iMovie. However, my new Sony H9 camera saves them in MPEG1 Muxed (have no idea what that means but inspector said it was that format). I can't open that one in iMovie. HELP!!! Anyone know how to get around it in anyway (either saving the movie in a different format on the camera or while it downloads from the camera onto the computer, or how to get iMovie to import them)?

I also have a sony camera and cannot use imovie unless I purchase something else to change file formats! Why would imovie not allow mpegs to be brought in? Maybe they could come up with a software update that would allow us to use their program with mpegs! I am very disappointed that I cannot use imovie unless I purchase another program.

  • Itunes music won't import into imovie?

I've never had any trouble bringing ITunes music into IMovie, but since this new upgrade in the past few weeks, now when I go to put an itune at the playhead, it tells me the computer isn't authorized for this song (any song that I've purchased from itunes - I tried many) and to authorize it. I go thru the procedure to authorize the computer and it says I did, and then I go to move the song to imovie and it says once again, it isn't authorized....and I do it again, and it says it's authorized, and then I got to imovie and it says it isn't. ad infinitum. Apple techs were helping me and then they decided that I should call Apple Care and there would be a charge....really irritated me. I would assume it's some bug in Imovie since Itunes recognizes the songs as authorized. and something in the new version that they need to fix. Anyone else with this problem???

I had a very similar issue with one specific track in my latest iMovie project, and only on one Mac (the project was moved between 3 systems, all authorized to play my iTunes-purchased music.
The system would tell me that the audio track couldn't be played because the system wasn't authorized, and ask me if I wanted to authorize it. I'd click 'yes', iTunes would open, I'd confirm I wanted to authorize the system, and either the track would play, but then after iMovie was next launched report the track wouldn't play and go round the same circle, or it would 'play' but give no sound.
It's not an issue with iMovie as far as I can tell because the music played on that system perfectly before I updated to iTunes 7. It's not an authorization issue because iTunes plays the tune perfectly well without any error. I suspect it's an issue with the music - perhaps something in the migration from iTunes 6 to 7 when the library is being 'converted' is causing it.
Sorry, that didn't help resolve the problem, but at least it may help to know you're not alone in experiencing iMovie/iTunes/purchased music issues!
