2 Access Points Same Wireless Network

ok the basics: I have a cable modem hooked up to a linksys router ... the signal does not cover the whole house, so I got a linksys range expander ... set the whole thing up and everything works nice ... except that my PB keeps picking up the weak signal from the main router and doesnt connect to the range expander ... they both have the same security settings and all and they even appear as the same wireless network ... any thoughts on how to make my PB connect to the access point with the best signal?

I don't think that was the question posed. The issue is not how do I increase a particular access point's range, or can I dispense with one of them.
The issue is how to best work with TWO access points on the SAME network. I am very interested in this issue, as I have not been able to get my system to work properly. In short, there is an Airport Express (access point only) in the upstairs family room, and a Motorola (router and access point) in the basement. For those of us who own the new PB's, it is a lost cause to get reception comparable to the iBooks. Literally hundreds of posts exist in this area trying to improve it. So the ability to automatically connect to the highest reception point is a great benefit.
I have a unique IP address to each access point, and the Airport Express is tied to the Motorola router through ethernet. I have tried both devices on the same wireless channel, and each on its own (1 and 11). I have also tried using the same SSID & password for each point, and giving them unique names. In all situations, the result is the same. Once the Mac is connected to a particular access point, it will never switch over to the other one, unless connectivity is completely lost to the first one (i.e. unplug the AE).
This does not meet the 'roaming' idea. The goal is that when I am upstairs, I automaticallly connect to the AE, as it is strongest. When I move downstairs, it should connect to the Motorola, as the signal strength is SIGNIFICANTLY increased (we are running a PB, here). But this never happens. Instead, the PB will choke on internet browsing, because it is connecting to the gateway through a very weak wireless signal upstairs, when an alternate strong one is right next to it !!
Doesn't matter if I sleep in between relocating. All settings are automatic; that is, the Airport will automatically connect to the available networks. What I have to do is click the airport signal meter and choose my access point in order to change.
For those who think this is all acceptable performance, I don't have to do this with my HP work laptop. Windows does not seem to have a problem with proper, correct, and optimized roaming.

  • How do I use Airport Extreme to create wired access point on wireless network?

Bit of an odd situation. I just went from cable to DSL at home and the modem moved from right by my computer to upstairs.
Trouble is, there's no real easy way to get a cable from the modem upstairs to my X-box (sans wireless connector) downstairs.
I could buy the wireless adaptor for the X-Box, but I was hoping I wouldn't have to spend any more money.
I have my airport extreme, and I was hoping I could use it to create a wired access point on the network, recieving the signal from the wireless modem upstairs and allowing me to plug in the X-Box.
Is this possible? If so, how? I've been through the config panel about a dozen times, but can't figure out what combination to set up.
    Thanks.

Will it work if I use the express to create the network?
Yes, providing that you have an 802.11n version of the AirPort Express and the Express has been configured to "Allow this network to be extended".
Then, the AirPort Extreme can be configured to "extend" the Express network. When you do this, the AirPort Extreme will provide more wireless coverage and the LAN Ethernet ports are enabled, so you can connect an Ethernet device.
This will not be a "normal" Ethernet connection. It will only work as well as the wireless "hop" between the Express and Extreme allow.
For best results and performance, a wired connection through the hole in the wall is always best. If you decide to do this, you will need the "new" AirPort Express with both a WAN and LAN port on the device. But, you could try wireless first to see if it will meet your goals before you reach for the tools.

  • Is there a way to play on the same wireless network with 2 different xbox 360 accounts?

Is there a way to play on the same wireless network with 2 different xbox 360 accounts?

Not sure what your question has to do in respect to Apple networking, but if you're asking can you use your Xbox 360 on a wireless network (regardless of the router's manufacturer) to access different Xbox Live! accounts, then the answer is yes.

  • AEBS and TC - wired connection, same wireless network

    I need some advice.
I have AEBS and TC. Currently, the connection between them is "Extend wireless network". They are located on the opposite ends of my condo. I am doing some work on my unit and I have a chance to draw an ethernet cable between them. However, I'd like both of them to be the same wireless network, so that I have good coverage in and around my unit and have good speeds for accessing NAS units on the network.
Which ports would I connect with the ethernet cable and how would I configure the wireless network?
    Thank you!

Main unit has eithernet cable from LAN port that connects to WAN port of second unit.
Second unit is set up in bridge mode. You should not use "WDS" or "Extend Network" These are only for wirelessly extending the network.
The second base station should be set to a "DIFFERENT" wireless channel, however the network name and security settings should be identical to the main base station.
As long as the base stations have the same network name, roaming will work between them.
Again, they need to be set to different channels so that they don't interfere with each other.

  • Bridge to bridge and bridge to access-point via wireless is it possible.

here;s my topology i am trying to configure. i have a router whose ethernet is connected to a bridge.this bridge 1 is connected to a bridge 2 via wireless. now i am trying to connect a access-point via wireless to this bridge2. is it possible for bridge 2 to support connectivity to the bridge1 and the access-point both of them via wireless.
can someone pls help me on this.
    waiting for someone to reply.
    regards

You can set up each radio in the access point for different functionality. Considering the scenario, this can be done by setting up the SSID for the G radio and another SSID for the A radio. Then, set the role in the radio network parameter for the G radio to access point and for the A radio to the root bridge role.
ou can prevent unauthorized users from reconfiguring your access point/bridge and viewing configuration information. Typically, you want network administrators to have access to the access point/bridge while you restrict access to users who connect through a terminal or workstation from within the local network.
To prevent unauthorized access to your access point/bridge, you should configure one of these security features:
Username and password pairs, which are locally stored on the access point/bridge. These pairs authenticate each user before that user can access the access point/bridge. You can also assign a specific privilege level (read only or read/write) to each username and password pair.

How do I share files between computers (mac's) on the same wireless network?

Turn on File Sharing in System Preferences - Sharing, then you should be able to see them in the other Macs' Finder sidebars (under Shared). Click on them, click Connect As, and log in with the user credentials you're sharing from.

Welcome to the Apple Community Willy.
Try the following steps, check whether things are working after each step where appropriate, before trying the next.
Check AirPlay is turned on on the Apple TV (turn it off and on if it already is)
Check that both devices are on the same network (Settings > Wifi, on the mobile device and Settings > General > Network, on the Apple TV).
Restart the Apple TV (Settings > General > Restart).
Restart the Apple TV by removing ALL the cables for 30 seconds.
Restart your router. (Also try removing it’s power cord for at least 30 seconds)
    Restart your mobile device.

  • 2 Macs Same wireless network different speeds

I have an imac and mac book pro connected to the same wireless network ( both N speed ) Same room same signal strength.
The iMac has a very slow connection that sometimes comes good but mostly 1 tenth of the speed and hangs alot.
Where could the problem be ?
    cheers
    David

Assuming no other factors that would affect both Macs equally, the only real difference between the two is the wireless antenna used in each device. Obviously, they are designed differently so this could explain some of the disparity that you are seeing.
The other possibility is that either the iMac's antenna or built-in AirPort card is faulty. If possible, I would suggest that you make an appointment at your local Apple Store to have them take a look.

  • Is the maximum number of users for Airport Extreme per device, i.e. 2 AEBS = 100 users, one AEBS extending the other on the same wireless network?

Is the maximum number of users for Airport Extreme per device, i.e. 2 AEBS = 100 users, one AEBS extending the other on the same wireless network?

50 users per device, assuming that the "main" router is setup to deliver an adequate number of network IP addresses for all devices.
2 AEBS = 100 users, but that is really more of a theoretical max.
If you really need 100 connections, it would be much better to use 3 AEBS to spread things out.

  • Setting up wireless Cisco Access Points independently and network layout

    Hello,
I am technician in a school. I have been asked to upgrade wireless system in school. Currently I am using VDSL2 30Mbps line. I am using E4200 Router, which is providing internet services. The school has 3 floors. On one floor I have this router which is further attached with 16 port gigabit unmanageable switch. The same router is providing wireless service on the same floor using Class C ip address. From the switch I have extended a cable and took it on to another (second floor), where I have got one more gigabit switch. From that switch I have connected one router using different subnet and further i have attached two access points for the entire floor, which is working ok. From the same switch I have extended one more cable up to third floor where I have connected one more access point. So, 3 access points on three floors, 2 switches and two router. This is the current network layout.
Now school have decided to go over to fiber. ISP is going to put Juniper router and going to create vlan and will configure access restrictions. School will have 100Mbps unlimited up and download speed. Its because of increase in number of students. School is still waiting for the router and configuration to be done.
I have got 4 cisco 1602i access points (AIR-SAP1602I-Z-K9). These access points are POE supported. I have got one 8 port POE switch also. When I got these 4 cisco I didnt get power adapters with them. First I want to ask, is this normal. Don't they usually come with power adapter. I know they are POE, but cisco doesn't send them with power adapters.
Second I want to ask, if these access points can work independent without WLAN controller. Or do i have to have WLAN controller.
As fiber is not up yet so, for the time being I have connected these access points with POE switch using Cat5E cable and then further connected the POE switch with normal gigabit switch, which is further conneted with router at this point.
Please tell me if I am doing it correctely. I will also be needing help with the configuration.
Can anyone tell me how to setup these access points independently for current situation to provide internet access. How to set them on different channels etc......
Also want to know if there is any software that can detect access points and can help me manage these access points.
    I shall be thankful.
    Sarab

  • Can I use this as a wireless access point for my network

can I use this as a wireless access point for my network

    umm... use what?
A Time Capsule? Sure. It's just like many other wireless base stations. It can run in either bridge or route mode - in bridge mode it's just like an access point linking the wired and wireless networks together.

  • Using Mac mini as an access point for home network

    Hi
I'm looking for some help on using my mac mini as an access point on my home network.
I have a G5 tower which is wired in to my router and acts as a home server. It has all my itunes library, films, etc
I stream these to various machines in the house, one of which is a mac mini in our living room.
The mini is connected to the network via powerline adapters meaning the airport is left free.
So i set up internet sharing on the mini via airport so I can use the machine as an access point for the living room.
If I connect another machine to the mini via airport, Internet is working fine but for some reason I can't see the any other machines on the network.
All I see in the sidebar is the mini, not the server.
I've tried it on both mine and my friends macbook but had no luck.
Am I doing this the wrong way?
How would you go about doing this?
    Cheers

Internet Sharing may not be providing an address via DHCP, It also may not be providing a subnet Mask that can get you to communicate with the other computers on your local Network.
Take a look at what IP addresses are being used by the various computers on the network. I would expect you have a Router that may be using 192.168.0.1 as its base "private" address, and issuing DHCP Addresses in that range and higher with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0, meaning anything with the same three high octets can communicate freely without Router intervention.
But what addresses are bing used for the Wireless Shared computer(s)? and what subnet mask?

  • Help needed setting up access point to public network

    Hi from a newbie,
Assuming they are suitable, I want to use one (or two) AP1232AG-E-K9 access points for Internet connection through a public wireless network (BTFON), where wire broadband is not an option. I've downloaded what I think is the correct manual for the APs and I'm now scratching my head as to where and how to start setting them up. I want to use these Cisco APs in the hope they will give me better wireless performance than I'm currently getting, which is frequently flakey.
I've tried to reset the APs to the factory default but there seem to be different ways of doing this depending on what you want and what you've got. I made up a console cable  to access the console but there even appear to be different versions of  this so I'm not sure if the cable I have is the correct one.
I have setup and used lower end wireless devices in the past but these Cisco units seem real complicated and I'm going to need help in getting them working.
Any assistance would be much appreciated.
    Kind regards,
    Glenn.
