2 applications automatically start on startup

I have Skype and Firefox. Here recently, Firefox has been starting up on its own when I start the computer. I have gone to its preferences and can't find where to disable that. Skype has been doing it since my wife installed it. I also cannot find where to disable the startup on this program as well. Any ideas? I don't want them to open up when I turn on the computer.
Skype version 2.8.0.722 and Firefox version 3.5.5

Hi, several places, 1st in the Dock click on the Icon & see if it says like do not open at Login, 2ndly, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed, if so highlight it & click the minus button.
3rd, Also see what is in System Preferences>Other Row, right click or Control plus click on it to select remove.

  • Why do some applications automatically open at startup

I just installed mountain lion.  I noticed that when the computer starts up microsoft windows and excel open automatically.  I have another application that does it sometimes as well.  why do some applications automatically open at startup?  How can I change this?

Quit them before shutting down the computer, and check the list of login items in the Users & Groups pane of System Preferences.

  • Can't stop applications automatically starting in user account

I created accounts for each kid.
Parental control is active, but no restrictions on which applications they can use; just website restrictions and time limits.
Allowed them to modify the dock.
Each time they log in various applications automatically start and removing them from the startup list does not seem to solve the problem, and one is not even on the list.
The "re-open windows" check box is NOT selected when they log out and I watched them quit the applications before logging out.
Example: for one account iTunes Helper always shows up on the startup list... I try to remove it in their account and it just pops back up... this appears to cause iTunes to autostart each time the log in... annoying.
Example: same account, the System Preferences always start up... fortunately it is locked so the kid can modify anything. But again, annoying.
I propagated read/write permissions through their account folders (thinking maybe some settings are not being recorded)... but no luck...
I may just try to re-create their accounts but was hoping to find the answer to this most perplexing issue.
    Thanks,
    mk

Aha! Even though they had permission to read/write their files, apparently the ownership was not theirs on all of the files, this must have restricted the mods to their account.
    Thanks for the "jog".
    Background:
This permission state stemmed from a full re-build/re-store I did about a year ago when the hard drive crashed (with encrypted files in the my account, no less)... The backups were out of date (long story) and it took about a week to recover and re-assemble the sparsebundle bands from the broken drive (I only lost 12 pictures!... Disk Warrior really helped with that one!)... anyway I managed to install a new drive and re-stored all of the accounts, but apparently some of the library states had me as the owner... If I think long enough I probably remember how that happened.
Again, thanks for "remembering" for me ;-)

You have 14 days to return the computer w/no questions asked.  Plus you have 90 days of FREE phone tech support on top of your standard 1 year warranty unless you also purchased AppleCare which gives you an additional 2 years of coverage plus FREE phone support.
Strongly suggest that you take FULL advantage of the above before it runs out.  Let Apple deal w/the problems.

  • Webdynpro application automatic start after j2ee startup

    Hi ,
Is there a way to automatically start any specific webdynpro applications after j2ee startup
    Oren

I guess you can write batch file for that.
    Example
suppose you have a bat file which starts J2EE engine, startJ2EE.
You can write a new bat file with following commands.
    startJ2EE.bat
    explorer http://<server>:<port>/webdynpro/<URL as application>

  • Application automatically starts during start-up

    Hi,
just recently a strange and annoying thing is occurring. When I turn my computer on program I have automatically starts. It is a statistical program and so has absolutely nothing to do with the operation of the computer. I cannot find anything in system preferences that might give me a clue as to how to remove the "rogue automation" that seems to have developed. any suggestions? thanks.

Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Accounts -> select the account, you'll find login items under the account in question. If the application isn't there, find out from the vendor of that application where they store their data. You can always use http://www.appzapper.com/ to remove the application as well, but I'd backup my data before trying to use it, just in case it is overzealous*:

  • Application automatically starts

my i phone automatically opens applications like voice control music player or dialing numbers please help me ?????..

If sounds like you have a damaged home button, you can try restarting your iPhone by holding down the on/off and the home buttons at this same time until you see the Apple logo. If you are still having problems you should take your iPhone to your nearest Apple store for an evaluation.

  • Starting applications automatically upon startup

I tried searching for the answer to this but was unable to find exactly what I was looking for, so here goes my question.
There is one application in particular that I would like to start automatically every time I boot my eMac. I know how to make this work in PC's but not for Mac's. I am not a 100% true convert, I am about 50% PC and 50% Mac, only because there are some applications that I run that don't seem to have Mac born applications.
Thanks in advance for the assistance.

control click on the icon. Then select "open at login".
Maybe this is a Tiger feature Bill S. but is not available in Panther and Glen's profile suggests he has Panther.
    Glen:
For the application that you want to open at startup requires two steps.
    1. Open System Preferences > Accounts. Select your account and select the Start Up Item tab.
    2. Drag the application that you wish to open, into that box. Done.
Note; This application will only open in your account. If you only have one account then this is no problem. If you have several accounts and want the application to start up to be system wide, you can drag the desired application into HD/Library/StartUpItems using the Finder to navigate to it.
The first suggestion is perhaps what will suits your needs.

  • Equivalent of sessionetc to "automatically" start applications on login ...

    JDS fans and experts:
I'm in the process of getting our user community to move from CDE to JDS on our Solaris 10 machines.
Because we have an environment where anyone logging into our machine is likely to want to run a particular application, we "automatically" start it for them in CDE by putting the command uses to start this application in the file named:
    /etc/skel/.dt/sessions/sessionetc
When we create a new user, then all of the /etc/skel stuff gets copied into their home directory ... and, as a result, they all have a file named ~/.dt/sessions/sessionetc that starts the desired application for them each time they login.
Is there an equivalent way to do this using JDS? Note: if it matters, we are using the latest JDS3 on Solaris 10u4 on an x86_64 platform.
    Thanks for your help,
    John

    JDS community:
Well, I think that I'm close to being able to answer my own question as to how to set up an application to start automatically.
As root, I've opened the file browser and pointed it to:
    preferences-all-users:///
Then I double-clicked the Desktop Preferences icon followed by double-clicking the Sessions icon.
That opens up a window with 3 tabs .... one being named: "Startup programs". That allows me to add additional programs to be started and assign it an order.
Great! I added the program that I wanted ... and it starts automatically
when I login again as root.
Unfortunately, however, despite having done this in the preferences-all-users:/// section, it seems to only start the application
when I login as root .... but doesn't seem to start it when I login as a normal user.
Is there something that I need to restart in order for this to take effect for all users? Or do I have something else messed up that would prevent something that seemed to be added a a startup application for all users from starting for anyone but root?
    Thanks for any additional insights,
    John

  • Launchd applications not automatically starting at login

In the last couple of months I've noticed strange behaviour during startup/login wherein certain applications aren't automatically starting.
    In particular:
    - Evernote Helper
    - Mint QuickView
    - Growl
    - Possibly more, 1Password Helper maybe? Not sure
Each of these programs has a setting within them or their main application counterparts to start automatically at login. Whether this setting is on or not, the programs don't trigger.
    So far I've tried:
    - uninstalling, clearing out application files with Hazel, reinstalling
    - verifying the "Start at Login" settings in the plist preference files
    - looking at the launchd files for these program entries (present in the override files)
    - using Cocktail to repair/re-create the launchd files
Has anyone else experienced this? The work-around is to start these programs manually after login or in only some cases, add the program to the login items.
    Thanks

Things Helper is another program that's not starting at login. Oddly, Mint QuickView started for over a week straight, but no longer apparently. I haven't touched any settings or done anything seemingly related.

  • Minisap application server starts automatically when i switch on computer

    Hi there,
I've successfully installed Minisap on my computer, but my problem is the Application Server starts automatically whenever i switch on my computer which slows it down. I tried using XP's scheduled taks to run cmd Stop Application Server but it does not seem to work. Is there anyway i can solve this?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
Your problem seems a general one and not miniSAP specific.
These are some steps that i think can be a possible solution:
    1. Use 'msconfig' to uncheck any startup services of miniSAP (do not uncheck initialisation services)
    2. CRITICAL OPERATION (Do not do this if u r not confident.) Use 'regedit' to delete the corresponding registry key in the 'Startup'. The path of this key differs from system to system. You can try searching for the name of the miniSAP application throuthgout the registry.
    3. Check if there is any option in the settings of miniSAP to 'Automatically start' (I have not used miniSAP, just incase ther is any option)

I have word, iTunes, and other application that starts automatically when I start my laptop and how can i change start up options?

Go to System Preferences / Accounts - Login Items.
In order to make changes, click the lock icon bottom left corner of the pane. You may be prompted for your admin password.
Select the apps you don't want to launch on startup then click - (minus).

Every time I restart my mac air some applications like calendar and Microsoft word automatically starts, how can I stop such applications from starting when ever I restart my mac?

One thing to check:  when shutting down or restarting, there is a checkbox in the shutdown/restart dialog which asks whether you want currently open applications to open at startup.

If you use a virtualizer like Parallels Desktop or VMware or Virtualbox: goto system Preferences/ Account/ LoginItems and delete (- sign) the Virtualizer.
If you use Bootcamp: log into Windows, there disable autostartup with system start, there used to be a simple tool called startup.cpi which pops up in ControlPanel and that handles these things.
