2 approved updates gives large download size
Hi All,
I've been using WSUS for some time and I have one thing that happens that I would love to understand why.
When I approval windows security definitions why do I end up with a large download.
Today I approved windows defender definition and windows security definition and the download was 2 files at 750mb. We have approx 30 PC's in WSUS but I would have thought the download would have been no more than 50mb.
Am I missing something? I tried searching but I just couldn't find anything. Sorry if this has been asked and answered many times.
Regards,
Chris

Yes. It will have all VM related files in it. I would say it's less. Its an Appliance and it will need minimum of 2GB worth of files to work.
If it were built on windows you would be downloading an OVA of at least 8GB

Some computers download and install the two approved updates, others only download Windows Update Agent and not the approved updates.

Strange download size of on calling packaged stored procedure in VB6
Hi,
I tried to use VB6 to call oracle stored procedure with ref cursor as output parameter under a package in 10g database (10.1.03). Oracle client uses windows 9.2 / 10.1.02 (Oracle OLEDB Provider) . I found that when the package size increases(> 1000 lines codes), the data size transfer from database to VB client also increases. I try to trap the binary data flow between VB6 and database when calling packaged stored procedure. I found that VB6(or oracle client ??) will first download package spec then execute the requested stored procedure. This may explain the cause of increasing size.
However, this large download size for calling only one of the procedure will make my application run slowly when my application uses the package much. How can I solve this problem ? Does this relate to oracle client(p.s. this problem disappear when using Microsoft OLEDB Provider)?
Thanks
StevenYou can use a wrapper to get compiled code and if it's 10g you can do even more by putting it in a library.
OLEDB from VB6 still using Oracle 'Client' as you call Oracle NET. -
Need to get large file sizes down to downloadable sizes-how?
I am using Compressor 4 and have several professional videos I produced with Final Cut Studio in QuickTime/.MOV format using ProRes 442. They are all 720p and of course, all have large file sizes. I needed to convert them so they are compatible with iTunes as well as Apple devices (AppleTV, iPad/iPod/iPhone, etc). They also need to be downloadable in a reasonable time and I of course want to maintain a quality image. Several of the videos are about an hour long, some a little more.
I an unable to get most of these files to be small enough for practical download and still maintain an acceptable quality. For example:
I have one video (QuickTime rendered from FCPS) that runs 54 minutes. 1280x720, ProRess 422, Linear PCM with a Bit rate of 72.662. The best I seem to be able to get out of compressor is to use the setting options for "HD for Apple Devices (5 Mbs)" which gives me a file that's just over 2Gb. Not bad, and the quality is still very good, but the file size is just too big for people to download. I get reports of people getting estimates of 77 hours to download this one file.
I did try using the setting under Video Sharing Services / Large 540p Video Sharing just to see what it would give me, but it really wasn't that much smaller and the quality was noticeably degraded.
I'm confused as to what to do about this. I have downloaded things from iTunes before that are good quality, about an hour and their file sizes are simply bnot this big.
Can anyone give me some advice? Thank you. Grateful for anything you can offer.
MCIf you're not concerned with precise average bitrate, use h.264 codec, set bitrate to "automatic" and use the quality slider. Be sure to have "keyframes" on "automatic"; every 24 frames or so makes h.264 quite inefficient and is only useful for live-streaming, where you want people to be able to resynchronise as quickly as possible. Having multi-pass enabled might help, but I'm not sure what it does when using constant-quality encoding.
Do a test-encoding of a representative clip of maybe about rwo minutes or so, play with the quality slider and see how far down you can go and still be satisfied with the quality. Using "automatic" bitrate uses as many bits to encode each frame as is necessary to get the required quality, and file sizes will vary depending on the type of material. Complex textures and high motion will use more bits, still frames and slow pans will use very little.
A light chroma-channel denoising may help improve perceived quality, as may very light sharpening in case you scaled down the material.
If you're still not happy with the bitrate vs. quality tradeoff, try reducing the resolution, but generally you should get 720p down to around 2.5 to 3.0 Mbps with adequate quality.
On the other hand, If someone needs 77 hours to download 2 GB, they have another problem anyway. That sounds like a 56k modem connection. What's he doing trying to download HD content anyway?

Why are the apps i download larger in size than they are supposed to be
When i download an app off the app store, the app is larger in size than it is supposed to be on my pc and on my ipod.
For example i might download an app that says its 100mb on the app store but when it installs on my ipod or pc it will take up about 200mb.
This problem started happening when i updated Real Racing 2 from my ipod over wifi. It is like when i download something from my account it installs the app but doesnt delete the download.
Any ideas on how to fix this problem or what this problem is will be very helpful.Oooft thanks for rapid responce!! It is same account as purchased app, defo compatible (3 of them used to be on ipod then disappeared) and this is only computer I've ever used with ipod. I also did a software update just incase and tried dragging and dropping them into device but it won't let me!!!!! I will try the restictions thingy!

I just verified my Apple user ID and password but certain updates won't download (gives me the signal that I'm incorrect). I keep changing it, verifying but not all applications let me proceed. So I can't download itunes software updates or update my iphone even though I have just verified my info. I know others that have this problem but can't get support to resolve it.

What to do if Photoshop CC update gives download error repeatedly?
Creative Cloud tells me there are updates for many apps, including Photoshop CS6 and Photoshop CC (2014). When I try to download them, others work fine, but the two Photoshops give a download error; retry does not help. Error is marked (49). What to try??
What operating system?
With Windows, best practice is to restart your computer, open the Application Manager as Administrator (via right clicking) and install the updates.

Disconnect WSUS server and Process of Approving Updates via Metadata.
Hi Folks:
I have recently setup 2 WSUS servers. The first one has connectivity to the Internet and of course has access to Microsoft updates. The second WSUS server is part of a disconnected network. Both WSUS servers are supporting client workstations
of various operating system versions. The connected WSUS server is fairly easy, from a management viewpoint. I simply check to see what updates are "Needed" and I approve them for download. However, the disconnected WSUS server
is the one that I need some advice on. I want to have a fairly simply procedure for the disconnected WSUS server, but here is the procedure that I think would work:
Transfer metadata and updates via disc from the connected WSUS server to the disconnected WSUS server (using documented export/import procedure).
Check to see what is "Needed" updates on the disconnected WSUS server, once the WSUS server has had a chance to absorb all the imported metadata and updates. This means that the disconnected WSUS server has determined from it's supported
client workstations, what updates are required.
Generate a list of those "Needed" updates in some form, so that I can now approve those updates on the CONNECTED WSUS server for download.
Once those updates have been downloaded to the connected WSUS server, transfer the updates and metadata again to the disconnected WSUS server. Approve those updates, so that they can now be sent out to the client workstations on the disconnected
network.
If that is my procedure (can someone like Lawrence Garvin), please let me know, if that sounds correct. I'm concerned about the double export/import of the metadata and updates.
Also, I'm wondering if it would be better to have separate connected WSUS server for supporting the disconnected WSUS to keep things straight.
For example:
One connected WSUS servers supporting the set of client workstations, that are on the connect WSUS server's network.
One disconnected WSUS server supporting the set of client workstations that are on the disconnected WSUS server's network.
One more connected WSUS server, that would be used to download and transfer metadata and updates to the disconnect WSUS server. The advantage in keeping this separate, is that you would never confuse approved updates between the connected network
client workstations and the disconnected network client workstations. Especially, if they have different versions of software, that require updating.
Any input would be appreciated.You will likely also want to configure your WSUS server to "Download express installation files." under the "Update Files and Languages," setting on your options.
I will unequivocally disagree with this statement, for several reasons:
First, there's nothing that needs to be deployed that would use Express Installation Files anyway. Express Installation Files were designed to facilitate the deployment of Very Large Updates (read: SERVICE PACKS) across slow-speed links by significantly
reducing the size of the binary that must be downloaded by the CLIENT. There are NO service packs in the catalog that won't already be installed on any client system.
Second, in exchange for that ability of clients to download less, it significantly increased the size of the binary that must be downloaded by the SERVER from Microsoft. Express Installation Files will cause hundreds of gigabytes of extra binaries to be
downloaded, which will need to be transferred to the disconnected server. None of which will actually ever be used.
Third, most disconnected networks do not include WAN links, so the primary purpose of Express Installation File is contra-indicated by the very scenario being discussed.
Otherwise by default you might get just an installer downloaded onto the WSUS server and clients might still need internet access to download the actual package contents.
It would seem that you do not correctly understand Express Installation Files.
There is an in-depth explanation of Express Installation Files in the WSUS Deployment Guide. For additional information see
https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd939908(v=ws.10).aspx#express
I also would not recommend a internet facing WSUS server just to provide updates to the disconnected WSUS server as that will also need to download a full copy of the content to that server when it is likely already downloaded onto your internet
/ production WSUS server anyway.
Seemingly you are also not actually familiar with the documented guidance for how to manage disconnected networks. An Internet-facing (connected) WSUS server is *exactly* how this is done.

Software Update periodically stops downloading
This is the closest category I could find to post this in, so I apologize if it's in the wrong one.
Here is my problem: I am running Software Update, and everything is working fine, expect the download will from time to time (sometimes quite frequently) stop in its tracks. The program is responding, and everything seems in order, it just stops downloading. The update I'm currently on (GarageBand assets) is over 1 Gig, so maybe the large file size is the culprit. Either way, when I stop the download and tell it to install again it picks up where it left off and resumes progress. It's just a little annoying to have to keep checking up on it to make sure it's still going.
Thanks for reading all that, and for any insights you have to offer.HI and Welcome to Apple Discussions...
How much free disk space on the hard drive?
Control or right click the MacintoshHD icon on your Desktop. Click "Get Info". Under the General tab you will see Capacity and Available. Make sure there is at least 10% available disk space, 15% is better.
There is an alternative to downloading Apple updates. Go here and read here: "Using standalone installers from Apple Support Downloads"
Tip ... always run Disk Utility and repair disk permissions BEFORE and AFTER all software installations.
Quit any open applications/programs. Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac. If you see a long list of "messages" in the permissions window, it's ok. That can be ignored. As long as you see, "Permissions Repair Complete" when it's finished... you're done. Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac.

How can I get to email photos at higher resolution?
My "iPhoto" or "Mail" automatically reduces photos to about 40 KB .
My photos, taken with a common Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ20 include flora which I send to a publisher.
I am fairly new to my MacBook (Mac S X Version 10.6.8). I have been using it for a year.
I found I could not successfully send Large or Full size photos.
A few days ago I downloaded a new version of iPhoto (iPhoto '11 version 9.2.1).
Again, although I get the option of choosing to send small/medium/large//full size photos, it actually only sends them as "Small" (ie about 40kb) which is useless to publish. If I drag a picture onto the desktop (where my EXIF tells me it is full size) then attach it to an email by dragging, againg the sent email is at "small" size ~40KB).
My ISP (Westnet) tells me that their maximum accepted size is 12 MB.
I suspect that I have failed to set up iPhoto for this purpose. (I am well into retirement but, although geriatric, did study University Physics about half a century ago)Also, just a note. iMac PPC is about iMacs that were available up to early 2006. iMac Intel is for iMacs that were made available early in to 2006 to present. Because I only have satellite internet available to me, I have to download YouTube files in my download window. Several times now, one or two of maybe five or six files, all being downloaded simultaneously *to the same directory*, will abort with an error message "<filename> could not be saved because an unknown error occurred. Try saving to a different location". However, you don't get a chance to save it to a different location, the whole damned file has to be downloaded again from scratch. This is actually with IceWeasel 17.0.10, a thinly-disgusided version of Firefox 17 LTS, running on 64-bit Debian 7.1 multihome.
I realise this may be a plugin problem rather than a Firefox problem, I'm not sure of the exact relationship between the two, but I'm using TubeEnhancer 2.6 to do the downloads.
Whatever the 'unknown error' might be (and it's not a permissions problem, other videos being downloaded at the same time will save correctly to the same directory!) it seems beyond belief that it's not possible to give the user a chance to save the file somewhere else, as the error message suggests. It's so frustrsting to have to go through the whole download process again. Surely Firefox is storing a copy of the file on the hard drive as it downloads, is there really no way that this can at least be recovered when the error occurs, even if it's not possible for some reason to give the user a second chance to pick a directory and filename?OK, so I tried disabling the other addons and (I'm sure this is coincidental!) the problem actually got WORSE, not better, i.e. more aborted downloads.
This is a long-standing problem with both Firefox and Thunderbird, both programs will happily tell you *during* the download process that they've downloaded X MB of Y MB, but if the download aborts, then there's no indication that it's done so on the dowload page. All that is needed is to retain that expected download size figure when the download has terminated, so that you can easily see whether unattended downloads completed or not.
Yes, I suppose those of us who have to use satellite internet services are in the minority, but the only hours when I can download anything are between 0200 and 0700 my time, and I do like to get SOME sleep at nights! -
I am trying (and failing) to utilize large page sizes on a Solaris 9 machine.
# uname -a
SunOS machinename.lucent.com 5.9 Generic_112233-11 sun4u sparc SUNW,Sun-Blade-1000
I am using as my reference "Supporting Multiple Page Sizes in the Solaris Operating System" http://www.sun.com/blueprints/0304/817-6242.pdf
and
"Taming Your Emu to Improve Application Performance (February 2004)"
http://www.sun.com/blueprints/0204/817-5489.pdf
The machine claims it supports 4M page sizes:
# pagesize -a
8192
65536
524288
4194304
I've written a very simple program:
main()
int sz = 10*1024*1024;
int x = (int)malloc(sz);
print_info((void**)&x, 1);
while (1) {
int i = 0;
while (i < (sz/sizeof(int))) {
x[i++]++;
I run it specifying a 4M heap size:
# ppgsz -o heap=4M ./malloc_and_sleep
address 0x21260 is backed by physical page 0x300f5260 of size 8192
pmap also shows it has an 8K page:
pmap -sx `pgrep malloc` | more
10394: ./malloc_and_sleep

00400000 6288 6288 6288 - 8K rwx-- [ heap ]
(The last 2 lines above show about 10M of heap, with a pgsz of 8K.)
I'm running this as root.
In addition to the ppgsz approach, I have also tried using memcntl and mmap'ing ANON memory (and others). Memcntl gives an error for 2MB page sizes, but reports success with a 4MB page size - but still, pmap reports the memcntl'd memory as using an 8K page size.

hello, since 3-4 days I notice that app updates aren't downloading on my iPad air 2. I have iOS 8.1.3. I see the message "error purchasing this app" being displayed wherever I tap the update button. When i do "update all", nothing happens...I have tried resetting to default functions, without any resolution..appreciate any help I can get with this issue. Thanks, BVPai
Hi, Bvpai.
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
I understand that you are unable your Apps via the App Store on your iPad. Here is the troubleshooting article that I would go through when experiencing this issue.
Troubleshoot issues on an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
If you haven't been able to connect to the iTunes Store:
Make sure your date, time, and time zone are correct in Settings > General > Date & Time.
Note: Time Zone may list another city in your time zone.
Make sure that your iOS software is up to date by tapping Settings > General > Software Update(iOS 5 or later) or connecting your iOS device to iTunes and clickingCheck for Update on your device's Summary page.
Check and verify that you're in range of a Wi-Fi router or base station. If you're on a device with cellular service, make sure that cellular data is turned on from Settings > General > Cellular.
Note: If connected to cellular data, larger items may not download. You may need to connect to Wi-Fi to download apps, videos, and podcasts.
Make sure that you have an active Internet connection. You can check the user guidefor your device for help with connecting to the Internet.
Make sure that other devices (portable computers, for example) are able to connect to the Wi-Fi network and access the Internet.
Try resetting (turning off and then on again) your Wi-Fi router.
If the issue persists, try troubleshooting your Wi-Fi networks and connections.

I found a fix for this.
Go to Wifi Settings and then select your Wifi Network. Tap the blue arrow to go into Wifi settings and then select the DNS tab.
Set the DNS to 8.8.8.8 and then go back to the software update page.
This time it shall work.
I tried it on an iPad 1 running iOS 5.0.1 but I am sure this shall help.

Can't download the latest iTunes. A window pops up... The update could not be verified. It may have been corrupted or tampered with during downloading. The update will be downloaded and checked again the next time that Software Update runs.
Now, iTunes won't launch and can't be updated. Please help.
If I have lost my music collection I will be switching platforms ASAP. It is insane that Apple has updates seemingly every day for their products.I was in your same situation with 14 downloads and 14 attempts.
You have to make sure that your Mac is booting into 64 bit mode. You can make sure of this by going into System Preferences and scrolling down to 'Software' and making sure that you are booding with 64 bit Kexts.
If not, restart while holding the 6 and 4 keys down until you see the spinning gear wheel and try installng again.
BUT, what I also did was to go into Applications, click on the Lion installer, Get Info, and give yourself custom priviliges to Read And Write.
I did this simultaneously, and I don't know what function did it, but it worked for me, with no further downloads of the installer.
Good luck!
