2 copies of iweb 08

I bought a copy of iweb '08, and installed it on my P/B g4 10.4 etc; and I also bought a new macbook with iweb '08 installed on leopard...I feel overwhelmed because I want them to work in sync, but I don't know where to go to get coaching on this issue? Is it possible to do what I am asking? or might I just delete the iweb '08 on my tiger g4, and just work on the newer macbook?

Hi and welcome to the Apple iWeb Discussion Forum!
It has pretty nothing to do with having iWeb on both computers... The important part is the domain.sites2 file where iweb stores its data...
You might have a look at this page about editing a website from two computers

  • IWeb will NOT open domain package, tried many things.

I hope someone can help me. I searched the forum several times and went through all six pages of results looking for an answer. I did try everything listed in the few posts that did seem related, as well as a lot of those tips in combination with others, but nothing has helped.
Problem: After an AppleStore hard drive replacement, I copied things over from my Time Machine backup, as well as a backup of the more important things on another external drive. I copied things very peacemeal, basically starting from scratch for a few weeks to make sure the problem I was having was gone. (It's not, but that's a story for another day). When it came time to copy over my domain file and open it, it wouldn't open with iWeb. That is to say, doubleclicking it would open iWeb, but even watching activity monitor like a hawk, I couldn't see that it was doing anything.
Here is what I HAVE tried:
1 - deleted current domain file, and copied old one in it's place. No change.
2 - emptied the folder usually used to hold the domain, opened iWeb to create a new one. Close iWeb, copy domain to desktop, then copy the old one in it's place. No change.
3 - delete preferences and caches for iWeb, then repeat step 2. No change.
4 - delete preferences and caches for iWeb, then delete any combination of the following from the domain package: .plist files, domainstate.archive file, index.xml file. I tried this step about six times, with a different combination of these files each time, finishing with a repeat of step 2, and testing it. The only combinations that had any change were leaving only the index.xml file in the package, which got me about a second-long loading bar, then nothing, and leaving both the index.xml and the domainstate.archive in the package, which got iWeb to peak around 90-110% CPU (on activity monitor), flash the app not responding message a few times, then about 10 seconds later, it started idling again, nothing having opened.
Each time I've tried both opening iWeb first, and then actually doubleclicking the domain package. No difference between them. Then I copied the iWeb app from the time machine backup into my documents folder, and manually tried to open the domain package, with .plists missing, with that copy of iWeb. No change there either.
Both copies of iWeb, the one that last saved to the domain, and the one I'm trying to open it with, are the same version. I don't even been an OS update since it was last saved; I'm pretty sure I was on 10.6.4 then too.
I'm a little hung on what to do next. There isn't much in the domain package that could be causing issues except for the ones I tried copying out; everything else is just pretty standard file types.
That said, I'm not sure what could be causing the issue on the iWeb end, since I not only deleted the preferences and caches, but also tried a whole different application file.
I am planning to do a clean install on this computer, yet again, and start from scratch in hopes I can pinpoint what is causing my (unrelated to this issue) problem, for the Apple tech guys.
Should I just do another Time Machine backup with this new image, as well as keeping the old one, and then try to copy it over again when I've re-installed? I was hoping not to have to do it for another few weeks, because I'll need another external, since this one is out of space, but I also need to be able to edit this site!
Any help anyone has, even it's just a hunch of a suggestion, would be fantastic, and very appreciated. At this point, I'll try anything that won't damage any of my data, no matter how far-fetched.
    Thanks!

It sounds as if the problems, or the symptoms at least, are the same. When I double click the domain file, iWeb opens (with the open/welcome/tutorial screen if I've just deleted preference and cache files), and I'll get the menu bar, but nothing else. With the right combination of files removed from the domain package (see my previous posts for that), I can coax a loading bar out of it, but it "loads" in the normal few seconds, and nothing displays. Nada. Menu bar has iWeb, but almost all of the items in any drop down menu are greyed out, all the important ones I checked for anyway, and you can see either the desktop or finder window, or whatever other application that was open before you clicked the domain file.
I'm not sure I included this in my last post, but I did try just simply disabling MobileMe, but without any luck. I never really thought it would work, but figured it could never hurt to try.
The disk utility found a few permissions problems, but none were related to iWeb, they all actually seemed to stem from one thing. I did repair, but no improvement. I'm hoping to have some time this weekend to try some different things to see if I can get it to open. I'll keep a detailed list of what seemed to help, what didn't, and if I'm lucky, what solved it. Short of that, free time allowing, I plan to do a clean install I need to do for another reason, on Sunday. Unfortunately that means you guys won't get any details as to what would have solved it short of something drastic like that (hopefully that will solve it...) but I've got deadlines approaching, not only for that, but for the initial reason for the clean install.
I will try everything I can think of, and anything anyone else can think of, and will volunteer to me. I'm going to move enough files around this evening and tomorrow on my externals to do a full time machine backup, plus second backup of the more important files, so anything you want to suggest, I'll be a testing ground, so others with the issue hopefully won't have to resort to the clean install. As re-installing iWeb had no effect, I'm going to assume, with my limited knowledge in this area, that problem stems from a shared file or the domain package itself. Hopefully not the latter; it's all I've got.
Anyway, if anyone has any suggestions of even something to look for that might serve to flag my attention to investigate further, I'd appreciate it, so we can get a solid plan of attack for others.
Thanks for your help so far, everyone!

  • Sites2 file won't open in iWeb

My website is working on the web, but I can't open the file in iWeb to update it. The sites2 file is sitting like it should be in the iweb folder (along with my other website's site2 file which I CAN open!) but I just get "iWeb cannot open the file".
iWeb cannot open the BACKUP copy of the sites2 file either!!
In my sites file (in library) the website's folder and index and all is working fine.
Has anyone ever experienced this? Any suggestions? It seems to me I might have to just delete the site and start all over...
    thanks!

As Roddy has already said, you don't actually need several copies of iWeb to be able to open your domain files. All you need do is duplicate and back up the domain files and just go into iWeb and open these. It also keeps it a lot simpler if you do it this way.
The only way Fetch could have got hold of the incorrect file is if for some reason you placed it there by mistake. When you publish to a folder, iWeb creates only a folder with your site in it with the same name as in iWeb and a separate index.html file that you need to upload. How a domain file can get there too, I really don't know, unless you somehow uploaded from iWeb by accident and got a domain file there by mistake?
If something like this has happened, it sounds as if this domain file has somehow been published and if it has been published, this will be one very good reason that iWeb cannot open it. iWeb can't import, so if it is due to this then you are looking at re-building that site.
I would suggest that you ditch the multiple copies of iWeb and just copy the domain files instead and use one iWeb copy. This is likely to cause less confusion all round.

  • My Website Design and Pages in the iWeb Application has all Disappeared?

    Hello,
Last time I uploaded to my website I pressed save as always. Now when I open iWeb (Version 1.1.2) my design and the web pages I created are all gone and it asks me to choose a template as if this is the first time I have used the Application iWeb.
My website is still on-line. How can I correct this? Does it have something to do with the MobileMe fiasco?
    Thanks Rock

    RockSavage wrote:

Rock ~ Perhaps. To use MobileMe, the version of OS X you indicate you are using (10.4.10) needs to be upgraded to 10.4.11. See this _.Mac to MobileMe transition FAQ_. ...Run +Software Update+ and you may also get an iWeb update.
It sounds like iWeb cannot find its Domain file, normally located in the +~/Library/Application Support/iWeb+ folder. Have you moved it, or made any major changes to your Mac?
If you've been prudently making backup copies of iWeb's domain file as described HERE, you could try double-clicking on that backup copy and see if it opens up the last backup version of your sites.
"iWeb stores everything in a Domain file, normally located in the ~/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder (although it can be moved). If you no longer have this file, you can view your currently published pages and manually recreate them within iWeb, but there is no way to import published pages back into iWeb. You can manually back up the Domain file, or use Backup to back it up."

  • Backup domain ?

This may be posted under iweb 09 but it shouldn't matter. Where do I find my web domain. I have had problems finding the actual domain with spotlight. What I wan to do is copy it and save it in a backup file.
I think time machine may do this and perhaps my idisk but I want to keep one on a seperate drive and dvd in case something happens to the original.
This web site took way too long to build.

Spotlight does a terrible job as it is restricted to areas that Apple deems the only areas you should be looking. Use Find File as it looks everywhere on the HD.
The default location for the domain file is in your User/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder. Yes, TM will backup your user library and your domain file. I also make a separate backup whenever I've edited and saved any changes. I've created an Automator workflow that copies the iWeb folder to the Documents folder. You can download that from Toad's Cellar. You can edit the workflow to change the destination of the backup copy. Just drag the workflow onto the Automator icon to open it. The rest is self explanatory.

  • Edit blog with Contribute CS3

Hi, i've made my web site using iWeb and uploaded it to my iDisk using iWeb
I have a blog page made with iWeb
can I use Adobe Contribute CS3 to modify and create blog entries on my site?
I ask because I have a friend who i'd like to have a blog on the site but don't want to hassle of syncing two different copies of iweb
    any help appreciated, D

contribute seems to be able to connect to your .mac web hosting
My impression is that it cannot connect to the space used by iWeb, only to iDisk/Sites, used by Homepage. Is that right?
any ideas on how to edit iweb blogs without using iweb? i know its a tough one
I can't imagine there is any practical way to do this. You should use blogger or some other blogging system if you need that capability.

  • How can I replace just the corrupt page(s) in the domain file of iWeb using Time Machine?

I back up with Time Machine and have an extensive elaborate website I created in iWeb '09 over a couple months and publish to a local folder and then upload to my server, but in the last few days I notice certain pages (that I haven't even worked on or touched) somehow become corrupted or "cross-contaminated" with elements and images from other pages.  Once I see they are corrupt I make sure not to publish them (if the current published versions are the correct, non-corrupt versions) or if they did get published I can use Time Machine to retrieve the .html file and page files folder for that specific page and replace it in my published folder/server so it shows correctly on the Web.  However, that does not replace the corrupted page(s) you see and work with when you launch iWeb and try to edit or continue working on that page.
I am confused as to how I go to the package contents of the domain file and replace just that page with a previous version from time machine.  I don't want to replace the entire domain file because I have new changes I made to other pages even in the past hours.  How can I keep the good pages and just get earlier, non-corrupted versions of the corrupt page(s)? I know it's not as easy as with the published site folder where you can just replace the page's .html file and folder, but I don't want to have to re-create the corrupted page(s) from scratch or have to replace it with the last non-corrupted domain file and then have to redo all my recent changes to new pages I made before discovering the corrupt page(s).  Thanks for your help as now I can't make changes to the page(s) within iWeb itself.

Thanks for the response, Wyodor.  I don't know what that is, but I'll have a look.  Is it an alternative to iWeb or a way to transfer pre-existing iWeb sites?  When you say merge domain files, is that like so multiple copies of the same site show up then you can pick and choose the non-corrupted pages and group them then delete the corrupted ones?  I am on Snow Leopard with no plans or need to upgrade anytime soon.
And yes, I will read your links but just wanted to ask those questions.  Maybe they'll answer my questions, maybe not.
I was able to discern that within the domain file is a domain folder with all the site folders, each with their own page ".gz" files which expand into ".xml" files.  I was trying to figure out if you could simply drag the corrupt pages out that way and replace them with backup copies that are still good.  I am having trouble discerning which pages are which as they all have random names like site-page-30F175E3-AE33-4F10-A490-1A096D9B185B.xml and although I expanded and opened each in Text Wrangler, I still couldn't discern which were which for sure, and trial and error proved cumbersome.  Also, I did notice some of the later corrupted domain files had one or two more pages than the site itself has, so not sure how they got added or duplicated or what.
Again, I'll look at your links, but do you know about swapping out individual page .xml files this way within the domain file?

  • Since Apple is no longer providing MobileMe, and since my version of iWeb only has the option of publishing to mobile me (the "upgrade" eleviated the "publish to folder" option), how do I publish my web page to a remote host?

I used to have an amazing home page that I used with my students:
    http://hansen.osd.wednet.edu/media/hansen/msamson/MrSamsonHome/Home.html
The school district "UPGRADED" to the new operating system.  iWeb, which I have been using for years, no longer supports my ability to publish to the district server.  Apple thought it wise to force us to use MobileMe.  Furthermore, Apple decided that MoblieMe is no longer unavailable.  To add insult to injury, the new version of iWeb doesn't even have a "save to folder" option any more.  In other words, I can no longer use iWeb.
    Am I totally screwed?
Is there another way to publish my site?
Will Apple make me purchase yet another "upgrade"?
Is this a total rip off?
    Mr. Samson
ps.  As a loyal Apple customer (since 1982), I find these antics very frustrating.

I suggest you upgrade to the latest iWeb version while copies are still availalbe: iLife '11 - Apple Store (U.S.).  That's because it's now confirmed that iWeb and iDVD have been discontinued by Apple. This is evidenced by the fact that new Macs are shipping with iLife 11 installed but without iWeb and iDVD.
On June 30, 2012 MobileMe will be shutdown. HOWEVER, iWeb will still continue to work but without the following:
Features No Longer Available Once MobileMe is Discontinued:
    ◼ Password protection
    ◼ Blog and photo comments
    ◼ Blog search
    ◼ Hit counter
    ◼ MobileMe Gallery
All of these features can be replaced with 3rd party options.
I found that if I published my site to a folder on my hard drive and then uploaded with a 3rd party FTP client subscriptions to slideshows and the RSS feed were broken.  If I published directly from iWeb to the FPT server those two features continued to work correctly.
There's another problem and that's with iWeb's popup slideshows.  Once the MMe servers are no longer online the popup slideshow buttons will not display their images.
However, Roddy McKay and I have figured out a way to modify existing sites with those slideshows and iWeb itself so that those images will display as expected once MobileMe servers are gone.  How to is described in this tutorial: #26 - How to Modify iWeb So Popup Slideshows Will Work After MobileMe is Discontinued.
In addition the iLife suite of applications offered on disc is now a discontinued product and the remaining supported iApps will only be available thru the App Store from now on.
HOWEVER, the iLife 11 boxed version that is still currently available at the online Apple Store (Store button at the top of the page) and those copies still on the shelves of retailers will include iWeb and iDVD.

  • How can I import my iweb site into iweb on my new laptop?

I recently got a new MacBook Pro and transferred my files over from my PBG4 12-inch (great little laptop). However my iWeb files/site didn't seem to transfer over to my laptop. I found the files of on my PBG4, and thought I placed them in the correct folder on my one.
Every time I open iWeb it asks to start a new site. How can I import my old iweb site into it and continue with it? Is there a way of doing it? I've a read a few posts some talk about the file 'Domain' in the Home/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder.
If I copy that file over to my new MacBook Pro, will my site be in iWeb again? I greatly appreciate some advice. Thanks.
MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Isotopecrunch,
    Welcome to the iWeb forums!
You are correct about referring to the Domain file; this is the file that contains all of your work created in iWeb, and the file that needs to be transferred to your new MacBook. There are some notes on how to do this here.
Take the time also to make back up copies of this file, and keep them in a safe place.

  • IWeb Tiled Image Background Loads for Each Page

My site Ostyn-Newman.com uses a black template.  I have an image that I tile for the background as well as for the browser background.  They are the same image. IWeb seems to do two things that make my site slow way down. IWeb
    1) Treats the browser background image and site background image as two images even though they are identical.  This makes for 2x the downloading necessary to fill the backgrounds.  The files are identical except for the file names.
    2) Creates image files for each page even though each page has identical browser and webpage backgrounds.  This means that on a 1000 page site, there are 2000 copies of the same image that could be reduced to 1 if they could be shared.  This would make for a much faster experience for our site viewers.
Any ideas on how to make this happen?  I'm confounded.  I also have many small logos that I use dozens of time on the same page and IWeb creates a different image for each one.  You can see what I mean here  http://ostyn-newman.com/Gov_Fabrics.html  No big deal since each one is only a couple kb, but when you do that with 8 logos and each of those 8 is on a page 300 times, it starts to add up.  These examples are different but similar.  I'd love to figure out how to get IWeb to create and use common image resources.  I'm not html savvy, but I am fairly familiar with inserting snippets of code here and there via the Insert/Widget/HTML Snippet function to get done what I want to get done.  Thank you for the help.
As an aside, I have explored creating a custom template using my image, but that has proved to be a bit more complex than I am capable of.  Is there a template that allows me to put my image in as the background?  That would take care of everything for me.

Your Govt Fabrics and Leather page contains 1746 files that must be loaded for that page.
It took me nearly 30 seconds to load your page entirely with Safari over a very fast internet connection. Firefox took about the same, maybe a few seconds quicker and Chrome 24 seconds.
There seems to be 3 distinct sets of identifying images below the samples:
      , and
To reduce the number of individual files to be loaded why not create 3 images, one with the 4 items, one with the 3 items, one with the 5 items and use them instead of using individual images under each sample.  That will greatly down on the number offiles needed to be loaded.
Also using more than one page to display the samples would make each indivicual page load so much quicker than all on one page.
These are just some food for thought.

  • IWeb "quitting unexpectedly"

Each time I try to launch iWeb, it appears to begin a launch then I receive a message as follows. I am overseas so I don't have access to the 800 support line.
    "The application iWeb quit unexpectedly"

    Kibrabs, TravelLisa;
Welcome to the discussions, to both of you.
    Start by quitting iWeb.
Using the Finder create a new folder on your desktop and name it DomainFile.
Navigate to your Domain.sites file, found in this location on your local hard drive.
Move this Domain.sites file into the new folder you just created. Be very careful with this file; it contains all of your work, and all of your sites, created in the iWeb application. Now place this folder in your Documents folder.
Now launch iWeb. It may ask you to choose a Domain file or create a new one; it may just launch with a blank Site Organizer, ready to create new sites. If it asks you to choose or create a new Domain file, choose create. In any event, iWeb will have created a new Domain file for you. If the application continues with no problems, then there is something about the old Domain file it doesn't like. Could be something simple, like a badly named photo file. Assuming this is the case, navigate to the old Domain file in your Documents folder and make a few copies of it. Bring one of the copies to your Desktop and double-click it.
If you still can't get iWeb to open it so you can possibly find troublesome areas, you may be stuck with re-creating your sites. It's possible to get into the Domain file package contents, but you need to know what you are doing when you go this route--not much fun.

  • HughesNet and iCal (iTunes and iWeb too)

I have a brand new HughesNet setup HN7000S - good signal (88 - 86 when it rains) - 2 Watt transmitter - Works great, in that it can move packets fast and without errors. So it is not the connection and the latency from East Coast to West coast is 680 - 900 ms range (ping from my MacBook Pro to a server at a rack in MdR CA). I use Dynamic NAT - Hughes does not want to say what hardware they use. Hughes will NOT answer ANY questions or give recommendations about IP, routing, static IP, and especially protocols or software these are "your problem" (actual quote from rep) - just is it up or down and how can we help buy more or pay your bill. I am in the sticks so this is my only option and dial up is just not going to cut it.
BUT iCal will not update: UPDATE ERROR to the server webcal://ical.mac.com/###/G####%20-%20group.ics failed.

    dreamedia,
If you install Leopard, I would hope, but do not know with certainty that your initial issue would be solved.
Make sure that you have reliable backup copies of your important personal data files before you proceed.
I would recommend that you use an Archive and Install procedure to install Leopard: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1545?viewlocale=en_US "This type of installation moves existing System files to a folder named Previous System, then installs a new copy of Mac OS X." Be sure to read the link I provided before you install Leopard.

  • How do I get old copy of iWeb?

So I bought the new mac book air (2 of em) and sold both of the old laptops that both contained Iweb.
I had no idea that Apple killed the program.
If I buy an old version of Ilife 09 will I be able to just install Iweb on its own?
Is it possble I could pull his off of my time machine backup from one of the old computers? Does time machine write over old backups immediately? If not is it possible to access the old copies?
    Thanks in advance.

Yes, the iLife 11 boxed set does mention iWeb and iDVD, but it is not as visible as iPhoto, iMovie and GarageBand as these were all updated as part of iLife 11, but iWeb and iDVD were not.
They will not have removed anything from the boxed set and it should be the same as when it first came out.
If you want a copy of iWeb 09, which is the most up to date, go and search the Amazon website where you will be able to get a boxed set of iLife 09.
Also, for a boxed set of iLife 11 you will need to go to the main Apple store online and NOT the Mac App Store. iWeb and iDVD are not available for purcahse on the Mac App Store.
