2 Different audio outputs

Is there a way to configure my mac to play iTunes out of the headphone jack and play all other programs (like safari) through my bluetooth headset? I'm a beginning DJ and was wondering if this could be done. What steps will I need to take to do what I want? New sound card?

I'm having some problems with this as well. I want to have one track playing on one output (headphones) and then another track playing on another output (speakers). I have panned each track, so one is on full left and the other on full right. But I don't understand what to do now? How do I route each track to a different output? I don't know how to do this.
Many thanks in advance for your help.

  • Different Audio Outputs Logic Studio 8

Hello. I was wondering if apple was able to do this, because that would save a lot of plugging and unplugging of cables and such. Is it possible to select different audio outputs for different programs that you are using on the imac? I run logic studio 8 with a m-audio firewire 410 external soundcard with a couple of monitor speakers. I also have a set of z-5500 connected to my imac via the digital output cable. Is there a way where when i use logic studio 8, the firewire soundcard is used. and for all other purposes, such as watching a movie or listening to music, the digital output is used? Is there a program that can control this? if this is possible. it would help me out A LOT! THANKS

    Hello ecstasurf
    That's a great question?
Go to: "Applications / Utilities" and open "Audio MIDI Setup" from there you maybe able to switch between the FireWire and the Digital/Analog outputs. I can't give you much more help with that, I don't have an audio FireWire setup so you'll have to play around with the Audio Output Source there.
Note: If you like, you can drag a copy of the Audio MIDI Setup to your dock for quick and easy access.

  • How to choose between different audio output in different programs

I want to choose between the audio outputs in different programs.
For example; I want to hear spotify/iTunes with my plugged-in speakers and skype with the build-in/intern speakers.
It is possiple to control this on Windows but can I do it on Mac?
Does anyone know an app for this problem?
    Thanks for help!

I'd assume you'd want to set the sequence to "slur" notes and then just calculate the notes between a top & bottom value based on a float and generate NOTE_ON messages appropriately.
The pitch bend is designed to emulate / support the bend wheel found on sound keyboards...and it just modifies the pitch associated with a given note. A pitch bend of +2 would turn an A into B, etc...
    So, you'd want to do...
SET_SLUR (however you do that, I'm not a MIDI expert)
    pitch = bottom_pitch + ((top_pitch-bottom_pitch) * sliderValue);
    NOTE_ON(pitch)

  • 2 Tracks, 2 different audio outputs:

I have two tracks, exactly the same.  However, one track (track 1) has a metronome click, the other does not (track 2).  My laptop is connected to a Mackie Pro FX12 mixer.  I am connecting my laptop to the mixer via the laptop audio output jack connecting to a tape input on the mixer.  I would like track 2 (no metronome) to run through audio speakers and track 1 (metronome) to run through headphones.  Both the speaker and headphone outputs are on the mixer.  What do I need to do with Logic Express to make certain that the tracks are run through the correct output?

I'm having some problems with this as well. I want to have one track playing on one output (headphones) and then another track playing on another output (speakers). I have panned each track, so one is on full left and the other on full right. But I don't understand what to do now? How do I route each track to a different output? I don't know how to do this.

  • Is there no way to direct an AIR app's audio to different audio output devices?

I'm needing to make a couple of our AIR apps select certain audio devices to send their audio output to, and last year, somebody mentioned possibly using native extensions to do this.  I had to start working on other things for a while, but I've come back to this (for the moment), and I've basically learned how to create native extensions.
But so far, they don't seem to provide me any special access to anything going on under the hood of an AIR app.  When you stream live audio in through RTMP or RTMFP, the details of the audio are hidden from you.  There doesn't appear to be any place where you can actually access the audio bytes that are being sent over the wire.  You can specify a certain SoundTransform object for the NetStream to use, but that class is final and a vanilla Flash construct, so even if it may have a way to access the audio bytes, they're not acessible at all.
It really looks like, when a NetStream object starts streaming in live audio, there is no way under the sun to access the audio bytes and direct them to a certain audio output device, with or without extensions.  Is this so?  It would be unfortunate if Adobe didn't allow this, even through native extensions.  Thanks.

    Couple quick thoughts..
Limits are important. There's a large amount of work done to keep a clear separation between a users decision and a developers decision. For instance, you can't change a users default audio output because that clearly violates a users decision. That said, here's a whole mess of people debating the issue and actually eventually an undocumented COM API you can find that will actually let you do it in Vista/Win7 (but not 8), however don't expect that to be a 'good thing to do':
    http://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/9ebd7ad6-a460-4a28-9de9-2af63fd4a13e/programatica lly-setting-the-default-playback-device-and-recording-device?forum=windowspro-audiodevelop ment
You might want to get a beverage before reading that.
Aside that, RTMP is secured, which is why you can't gain access to the bytes. The entire purpose of it is to assure media developers that their media can't easily be copied/stolen. Adobe doesn't document their method of securing streams but they do publish the RTMP specification. It's entirely possible for you to create your own RTMP server and encryption method while delivering a RTMP stream to custom client that you code yourself which can read the stream. Here's the spec:
    http://www.adobe.com/devnet/rtmp.html
So I'd say it would be unfortunate if Adobe did give you access to the bytes. You might as well just hand users a mp3 of whatever song is playing because they would steal media left and right.
That isn't to say you can't use a multitude of ways of getting the data going across the default output device. Plenty of apps (fraps/etc) capture video and mixed audio streams. But Adobe isn't going to give you the keys to the kingdom and let you decrypt their protected media protocol.

  • I have lost all audio output

I don't know what has happened, but I can't get any audio out from Soundtrack Pro anymore.
Even if I open previous projects, and try different audio outputs such as Built-in Out, Built in Line Out or my MOTU 828MK2, there's no audio, even though the meters show audio signal.
It worked a month ago, but even the projects I did one month ago are now silent.
In Final Cut Pro I have no problems getting the audio (thru my 828MK2) but when I switch to Soundtrack there's no sound.
I would have assumed they all use the same Audio/Midi setup?

go to settings, general, sounds, and check the volume. if the sound there is full blast, try going to settings, music, volume limit, and make sure that's turned off. now if that fails to work, try reseting the ipod by holding down the home button and the sleep/wake button at the same time until the apple logo appears on the screen. if that doesn't work restore your ipod on itunes.

  • Audio outputs on FCE?

If I have, say 5 audio tracks in Final Cut Express, will it be possible to route these tracks to different audio outputs (I have an audio interface with several analog audio output channels)? So far I have only been able route all audio tracks to one stereo output.
If not possible with this app. any hints on how to play out video + five different audio tracks / outputs simultaneously??

Not simultaneously. In real time you can only output 1 stereo audio pair. Your 5 tracks will be mixed into a single stereo pair based on the Left/Right channel assignments you make on each audio track.
On the other hand, you CAN export each audio track independently, with appropriate markers for use in SoundTrack, DVD Studio Pro, etc. This is a technique to export audio tracks to build a 5.1 soundtrack in an application like DVD Studio Pro.

  • Using multiple audio output devices.

Hey, does anybody know a program for assigning different audio outputs to different applications. For example, having Safari and the OS outputing to the computer speakers, while iTunes and Muse output to bluetooth speakers/headphones (non airport). Can it be done?

Sound Bunny is a nice replacement for Detour, which got lost in the move from PPC years ago. Hoever, there is a small bug with sites with audio (auto-play audio, that is) in Safari 7 (at least). They return the error below and won't load. This happen on other sites, but if it happens on the Google site as well, then something is seriously wrong. The company tech support insists: "SoundBunny will not stop any website from loading. SoundBunny is a audio controlling software and does not control which websites to load." ~ Abu; Prosoft Engineering Customer Support
Even after sending them two screenshots like this, I have gotten no response and no answer to how I might REMOVE the plugin from Safari. So while I like the program, I would be able to RECOMMEND IT if the comapny was at least responsive and recognizes that there is, in fact, an issue to be resolved.

  • Built in audio output (speakers) are playing through different channels.

My built in audio output (speakers) are playing through different channels. How do I make them both play through the same channel? It has something to do with the audio midi setup. When i click "Configure Speakers" on th Built-In Output I don't get the option of "-" for which channel the audio should go out of, I just get "1" or "2" as an option. This happens when i select them to be both stero and multichannel speakers. Any ideas on how to fix it?

Is there a red light glowing inside the jack? It sounds like a faulty jack. Read this:

  • 2 different "switchable" audio output (HDMI and analog) with Mac mini

    Hello,
I have a 2010 Mac mini that I use as a media center.  Its hooked up to my HDTV in the living room via HDMI.  I also want to hook up external speakers via the 3.5mm analog jack.  These speakers are in the kitchen.
I would like to get my audio through HDMI when I watch TV and be able to get audio output via 3.5mm jack when I just want to listen to music in my iTunes library.  I like to control my iTunes library with the Remote app on multiple devices.
Is it possible to switch automaticaly the audio output?
Right now I use my Airport Express to stream music from my Mac mini to the speakers but I think that the Airport isn't really needed since it lies just by my Mac mini.  I'm pretty sure the mini can do both.
I've tried to hook the speakers to my Mac mini but first: I hear a "hum" in the speakers (wich I don't hear with the Airport) and second: I can't seem to get the audio out in the speakers.
I've read many posts about the audio midi settings but I can't figure it out...
    Any help?
    Thanks a lot.

I hit post too early... here's the rest of it.
    See the Linein app- https://www.rogueamoeba.com/freebies/
    See the SoundFlower app- http://cycling74.com/soundflower-landing-page/
    See AU Lab- http://www.apple.com/itunes/mastered-for-itunes/
With those apps (or combination thereof)
You can copy an  audio stream from one output to another.

  • Asrock ION330/Nvidia HDMI - No audio output

Machine was running archlinux and not been upgraded in over 6mths but HDMI audio worked fine. Decided to do a scratch build since all the changes in that time and have a nice clean system.
If it helps, this is what I install. Ssed this exact same install process for another Asrock ION330 and Acer Revo3610 (both same hardware) but neither use HDMI at all. Both VGA with either optical or analog audio. Both work with no additional config.
pacman -Sy nfs-utils screen ntp alsa-utils mlocate xorg-server xorg-xinit xorg-server-utils mesa nvidia ttf-dejavu xfce4 gamin slim mythtv unrar lirc xbmc wget
Get no sound output but also zero errors on any of the following commands. I should add that the receiver does not detect any audio coming in, ie it usually identifies how many channels of audio and type it is receiving.

  • Help!!  No AUDIO output from iMac through FW to mixing board (zed r16)

With my system stated below, I run an Allen-Heath ZED R16 board via FW. PROBLEM: I get NO Audio output to the R16 when I play iTunes or DVD/CDs in the iMac.
I DO get audio feed when I playback projects from Logic.
I have checked all System Prefs on the iMac (cahnged to the ZED); on Logic (changed to the ZED). I tried all different channels, routing, etc. NOTHING.
    Can someone help?

Well, the Allen-Heath support site had the answer... quite surprised and pleased!!
Have to reconfigure the iMac speakers in the Audio/Midi preferences. The details are found in this URL:
    http://allen-heath.helpserve.com/index.php?m=knowledgebase&a=viewarticle&kbarticleid=238
The ZED R16 is a great board but certainly not Plug' n Play.

  • No Audio Output after Upgrading to windows 7; Soundblaster Card is installed

After upgrading to Windows 7 Ultimate (64-bit), I found that my speakers (which are built into my HP w2207 monitor) are not recognized.  In the notification area I have the speaker with a red x in it, and it says “No Audio Output Device is installed”.
I have a HP Pavilion D4890Y with the Sound Blaster Audigy X-FI 24-Bit Xtreme sound card.  I tried looking in Device Manager, and found “Multimedia Audio Controller” under Other, which states no drivers could be found.
I tried following some of the advice online, and downloaded the latest Realtek High Definition Audio drivers, but and the download seems to run successfully, but I don’t notice any differences.  When I reboot as prompted, I’ve still got the same error.
I then tried forcing the Audio Device to use a Realtek driver, but Windows protests (saying it’s not sure it’s compatable with my device, and I end up with “Realtek High Definition Audio” under “Sound, video and game controllers”, but it has a yellow exclamation point.  If I click properties, the device status says “This device cannot start (Code 10).” If I try to update the driver I get the message that it cannot find the driver software.   If I uninstall the driver I’m back to the original problem (multimedia audio controller under original devices, with no known drivers).
I also tried downloading various files from the Creative site, but it’s not clear which one to use, and the 4 or 5 different ones I tried (including their recommended beta version for Windows 7), when each of them opens it says it can’t find any supported devices.
    Suggestions?  Thanks!

    Hi,
"If the driver is a previous revision install it using the TROUBLESHOOT COMPATIBILITY tool that is part of the Windows 7 OS.
To use the tool, uninstall any drivers for the sound card you show listed in Control Panel/Programs/Uninstall Programs  list.  Delete the Device from Device Manager.
Download the revision of the driver from www.creative.com  website to a folder you've created and placed on your desktop.
After the driver is downloaded, navigate to the "setup.exe" of the driver and Right Click - select Troubleshoot Compatibility  ----
Let the compatibility tool select a possible solution then use its suggestion of TRY RECOMMENDED WINDOWS SETTINGS, if it does not find a solution it will submit only CUSTOMIZE SETTINGS and let you install it as you designate."
The preceding information comes from a Microsoft Windows 7 forum regarding an issue similar to yours.
the information you provided did verify that it is a sound blaster XiFi Extreme card as checked against the Vendor / Device list.
    regards,
    erico

  • Audio output device same for all users Yosemite

I use more then one account on my recent Macbook Pro.  For the first account I like to have the audio output set to the speakers but for the other account I want the audio output set to the headphones.
With Mavericks the Macbook remembered the last audio settings for each user account.
With Yosemite any changes to the audio settings (input, output, system sound, etc.) on one account affects the audio setting on other the user account.
I tried various audio settings to see if it affected them all.  It seems to.
I tried seeing if it happened only when the users accounts were logged in or it was different on boot etc.  It seems to always change the settings for all users no matter what.
I tried resetting the PRAM but that did not solve it.
I tried a 3rd party program called AudiSwitcher from the App store to see if this could help but no luck.
I searched here and more widely to see if anyone else was reporting this and found one other person who seemed to mention the same problem and they concluded "I did some tests and came to the conclusion that the system now does not remember settings for each user, and applies the current setting of audio output for all accounts."
    Curious to know:
         a) Does this affect other people?  If not, I'll look for conflicting apps on my computer.
         b) Is this intended behavior or should I look for a way to report it as a bug?
         c) And most importantly if there is a way around it?
    Thanks!

I'm also have the same problem. I tested it on fresh Yosemite installation without any additional software. Your mentioned my conclusion about tests.

  • HOW TO: HDMI Audio Output for Zotac Media Box with nVidia ION :)

I've been fighting with my recently purchased Zotac mini-PC for about 2 months now trying to get the HDMI audio output to work. I tried extensive modifications of /etc/asound.conf, different versions of ALSA, and even OSS without success. I've finally succeeded using ALSA and GNOME.
First I installed ALSA according to the Arch wiki.
Next I verified that ALSA detected my sound card(s):
    cat /proc/asound/cards
    0 [Intel ]: HDA-Intel - HDA Intel
HDA Intel at 0xfe9fc000 irq 28
    1 [NVidia ]: HDA-Intel - HDA NVidia
HDA NVidia at 0xfcf7c000 irq 18
Next I checked which sound card had the HDMI jack:
    aplay -l
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 0: ALC888 Analog [ALC888 Analog]
    Subdevices: 1/1
    Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 1: ALC888 Digital [ALC888 Digital]
    Subdevices: 1/1
    Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 1: NVidia [HDA NVidia], device 3: NVIDIA HDMI [NVIDIA HDMI]
    Subdevices: 1/1
    Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 1: NVidia [HDA NVidia], device 7: NVIDIA HDMI [NVIDIA HDMI]
    Subdevices: 1/1
    Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 1: NVidia [HDA NVidia], device 8: NVIDIA HDMI [NVIDIA HDMI]
    Subdevices: 1/1
    Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 1: NVidia [HDA NVidia], device 9: NVIDIA HDMI [NVIDIA HDMI]
    Subdevices: 1/1
    Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
From these two commands, I concluded that I have 2 sound cards (important later on) and that my HDMI sound card was card 1 (NVidia) and that it had 4 possible devices (3,7,8, and 9). To determine which device must be used, I ran the following command for each device (for example, to test card X and device Y, use' plughw:X,Y'):
    aplay /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav -D plughw:1,7
Playing WAVE '/usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav' : Signed 16 bit Little Endian, Rate 48000 Hz, Mono
I tried each device and got the best sound from device 7 (8 and 9 also worked, device 3 gave static...).
Now, since I had 2 sound cards, I needed to change the default ALSA device. My default ALSA device was card 0 (the Intel card), which wasn't plugged in, so I needed to change the default card to be card 1 (the HDMI card). After reading the ALSA FAQ, I found that modifying /usr/share/alsa.conf should work, though modifying /etc/asound.conf should have also worked. For whatever reason, I couldn't get my modifications to /etc/asound.conf to work, so I edited /usr/share/alsa/alsa.conf. In the  "# defaults" section I replaced the following:
    defaults.ctl.card NVidia
    defaults.pcm.card NVidia
    defaults.pcm.device 7
I opted to use the key NVidia rather than the card number (1) since I've read in numerous places that the card index can change unexpectedly after a reboot/update. The key can be checked with cat /proc/asound/cards as shown above.
After this, I reloaded ALSA (/etc/rc.d/alsa restart) and verified that the sound worked through the default channel:
    aplay /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav -D default
Playing WAVE '/usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav' : Signed 16 bit Little Endian, Rate 48000 Hz, Mono
Finally, I rebooted, chose the HDA NVidia (ALSA Mixer) option from gnome-volume-control, and loaded a movie in gnome-mplayer. I was pleased to hear crystal clear sound with functioning volume control
I Hope this helps someone else, I found it very hard to piece together how to diagnose and resolve this problem. Here are some of the resources I found useful:
    Arch Wiki ALSA Page
ALSA FAQ for how to change default sound card
    ALSA FAQ
    XBMC Troubleshooting for ION HDMI

@sprince09 Can you hear sound through HDMI when you run aplay /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav -D plughw:1,7 ?
(8 and 9 also worked, device 3 gave static...)
    - what does it mean? How do you know that they are working?
What options do you have for snd_hda_intel in /etc/modprobe.d/ ?  Can you play the following:
    mplayer -ao alsa:device=hw=1,7 file.wav
BTW, can you hear sound form video files in xine? If yes, can you post your ~/.xine/config ?
