2 Different Bit Depths- Which is the real one?

I apologize, this gets confusing. Reply and I'll try to clarify the best I can. I'll even submit the example files I've been experimenting with.
In iTunes, I have been converting WAV files into Apple Lossless .m4a files (ALAC). Recently, some of the ones I have converted have had some inconsistent bit depth values. Since I work in Adobe Audition CS6, I can output various formats: format settings of 32/64-bit (Integer OR Floating Point IEEE), sometimes 24-bit Integer, and sample types of 192.000 kHz or 44.100 kHz and up to 32-bit (float).
Contradictory? YES. It sounds weird to have format settings of up to 64-bit Integer/Float, but sample types of various sample rates, and almost always 32-bit (float). Is this a possible reason?
Another problem: iTunes has the ability to convert files to ALAC, among other formats. As it turns out, iTunes has the ability to convert to "32-bit," but only under specific circumstances. Working in Adobe Audition CS6, I have two options for "32-bit:" 32-bit Integer, and 32-bit Floating Point (IEEE). In order for iTunes to be able to maintain that bit depth, I need to select 32-bit INTEGER under Format Settings, and 32-bit under Sample Type. When the file has been exported, I reopen it in Adobe Audition where Bit Depth (in the "Files" box in the top right-hand corner) is listed as "32 (float)" all of a sudden. All I did was export it, I didnt convert it, but despite specifiaclly choosing "Integer," I have 1 32-bit Float audio file. In iTunes, it can open just fine. iTunes calls it "32-bit" as well, and it converts to other formats in iTunes as 32-bit (proabably float) just fine. However, if I export an audio file with 32-bit Floating Point (IEEE) Format Settings from Audition, iTunes fails to convert it to 32-bit, but instead converts it to 16-bit.
Here's what really odd: lately, every single ALAC file opens in Adobe Audition as having a Bit Depth of "32 (float)."
So... Where are the flaws? What are the real bit depths? ALAC files with the same sample rate and different bit depths (according to iTunes) still show up as being "32 (float)" in Adobe Audition. Is iTunes converting them all to 32-bits, and it just doesn't know it?
Thoughts?

32 bit Floating Point is Audition's default file operating mode. It offers considerable advantages over any fixed bit depth integer format .wav files.

  • I have two Libraries... which is the REAL one?

    Hi all,
In moving from one Mac to another in the process of getting it right I seem to have ended up with two Library folders. They are located:
    1. Macintich HD - System - Library
    and
    2. Macintosh HD - Library
Which is the real one? Which one can I delete?
    Thanks,
    Alex

DO NOT DELETE EITHER ONE OF THEM.
These are both valid OS X folders that your system needs to run. If you look at the contents of each, you will see that they contain different stuff.
There is also a Library folder inside each User home folder, containing things that are unique to each User.

Which is the REAL Firefox forum http://www.firefoxforum.com/ or http://forums.mozillazine.org/? I can't find a way to get to the "com" from the http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/home, but the "org" is only manned by curiosity seekers.

This - https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/questions - is the official Firefox support forum. It's only been around about 4 years.
Before that, this website - http://forums.mozillazine.org/ - was where Mozilla referred users for support. The only people who can possibly assist you with this is Apple Customer Relations, call your local Apple contact number and ask for Customer Relations then explain your situation clearly and politely (be firm but don't rant).
You might want to investiage what the local laws are regarding defective goods and 'fit for use' definitions on warranties etc. Consumer Protection can be a useful tool to use or bargain with if needed ...

  • Why is InDesign is using fake small caps instead of the real ones included in the font?

I was trying to use the small caps in Hoefler Text, which I did by hitting the small caps button. Instead of using real small caps (which should be in proportion to the capitals), InDesign created fake small caps by scaling down the capitals (which is disgustingly ugly). I know Hoefler Text includes real small caps because I can see them in the glyphs palette. How do I get InDesign to use the real small caps instead of creating the fake ones?

Just checked the font file. "Hoefler Text" comes courtesy of Mac OS X, pre-installed with your system. It's an OpenType font with TrueType outlines (actually a collection of four styles into one single file), and its typographic features, including the Small Caps charrington42 noticed in the Glyphs panel, are guided not by OpenType features but by Apple's AAT features.
InDesign cannot use AAT features; only Apple's own software can. TextEdit, for example, can access the real small capitals:
You could submit "Please support AAT" to Adobe using the Feature Request form -- I don't see anything against it. Or perhaps just the fact that it's only applicable to a small amount of fonts, and on Mac OS X only.

Hi. I'd like to delete the Snow Leopard Snapshots in my Time Machine backup drive because it won't work with Lion
I'm not sure what you mean . . . what won't work with Lion?  It sounds like it did do some backups.
Is there a way or an app to know which are Lion snapshots?
There is a way, but it's rather cumbersome.  You have to start selecting a full system restore; there's a window showing all of the backups and the version of OSX.
Is there an app I could use to manage the snapshots if manually deleting them will cause problems and side effects later.
It's best to use the Time Machine "Star Wars" display to delete backups, but you really shouldn't have to.  Let's figure out what's wrong first.

  • I had two files named graphics and I replaced one graphics file with another which was the wrong one.  Can I undo my replacement?  I move the wrong one, which was on my desktop into another one and that is when it as me if I wanted to replace the file.

I accidently replaced a file with another.  Can I undo my action?
I had two files named graphics.  One was on my desktop and another was within another file called solitarie.  I move the one on my desktop (wrong file) into the solitarie file and was asked if I wanted to replace the graphics file in the solitarie folder (the correct one).  I said yes accidently and then remembered that I had made a mistake.  If I use undo, it only move the wrong file back to the desktop.  Is there an undo of replace?

Sorry, but's that's why you get the warning. "Replace" means just that - the new file over-writes the old one. There is no undo.

  • HT3476 which is the real tonnage - capacity of the ipad mini retina 64gb?

i bought the ipad mini rhetina 64gb and when i opened it i saw that the tonnage - capacity is 56,60GB
    why?
by the way i bought it totaly closed with gelatin and packed with all apple details from apple store. but i discover when i opened it that the battery was charged 85% and the itunes was already inside the ipad without me have downloaded it before.
pls inform if i have bought brand new ipad mini retina or it is second hand??

The difference between the advertised 64 GB and 56.60 GB is taken up by the operating system since that storage space is not available to the users. Also, some of the difference is doe to how GB is advertised and repotted
How Mac OS X and iOS report storage capacity

  • Multiple Calendars and Contacts - and the real ones won't sync!

My iPhone (first generation, 4GB) has been working fine for the last 9 months but has developed a scary problem shortly after I upgraded it to 2.1 firmware.
The Calendar now shows as two separate "accounts", titled "On My iPhone" and "Untitled Account". The "On My iPhone" account has 4 different calendars (Home, Work, Untitled, and Untitled2). None of these calendars have any actual data in them, other than me putting in a couple of test appointments. The other account contains the three calendars that I've been using all along - those calendars have lots of appointments, birthdays, etc.
There's a similar situation with my Contacts. It suddenly shows two separate "Groups", called "Imports" and "Special Contacts". The "Imports" list is basically empty, and all my hundreds of contacts are listed in the "Special Contacts" group.
This is all a little puzzling, but the ugly problem is that my REAL Calendars and Contacts are not getting synced. All of my iCal and Contacts data has been wiped out on the MacBook that I use to sync my iPhone with. So, on my MacBook both my iCal and my Address Book are basically empty. (They used to have exactly the same data as my iPhone.)
Here's what I've already done to debug: My MacBook is running the latest Apple software (OS 10.5.5 and iTunes 8.0.1). I've done a "Reset All Settings" and also I've done an "Erase all Content and Settings" and then restored my iPhone from the backup on my MacBook. FORTUNATELY my Calendars and Contacts seem to have been backed up ok, even if they're not syncing. Also, just in case the problem was on my iBook, I also have tried to backup and sync to an XP laptop, also with iTunes 8.0 - no luck - backup/sync runs ok (no errors reported) but no Calendar or Contacts data is shown in Outlook.
Lastly, today, I talked to a Genius at the local Apple store - he looked at the iPhone for a few minutes, said he'd never seen anything like it, and didn't know what to do about it besides restoring the iPhone to factory condition and hand-typing in all the Contacts and Calendar data again. But really, I can't even do that - since the data won't sync, I can't even print it out!
    Any ideas????

I found a posting from a few weeks ago that sounds like a very similar problem to mine:
    http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=121467&st=0&p=859382&#entry8593 82
I still haven't found a solution. My calendar and contact items seem safe on my iPhone, but I need to be able to sync them to my MacBook.

  • So much performance data - which are the key ones to see if DB is tuned

There is so much metrics in SAP CCMS DB02 and DBAcockpit. WHat are some of the key metrics to look for when trying to determine if my DB is tuned properly.
Some are obvious like cache hit percentage but I wonder if some one could suggest metrics to look at and also if you could explain what they mean...
I am running Oracle 10.2.0.4 on UNIX with 16 CPUs
    Thanks
    Weyland Yutani

    Hello Weyland,
some key factors / threshold are mentioned in the "SAP/Oracle Performance Monitoring Strategies":
    http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw70ehp2/helpdata/en/c4/3a71ef505211d189550000e829fbbd/content.htm
The explanation of the metrics is here:
    http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw70ehp2/helpdata/en/c4/3a6fda505211d189550000e829fbbd/frameset.htm
    > What are some of the key metrics to look for when trying to determine if my DB is tuned properly.
That is the wrong approach .. if your end users are happy and satisfied with the performance - no need to tune anything.
I have seen several cases in which some DBAs tried to "tune" a well running database just to be "pro-active" and things getting worse.
If you see performance issues the first questions should be: "Is this a general performance issue or just for a specific transaction" ..
    Regards
    Stefan

  • Ati 3870 Mac edition which is the right one?

I've been looking over the weekend for a ATI 3870 card as an option for my mac pro. In different websites i've encountered 2 different cards all websites claim that it is the ATI 3870 mac/pc edition they are selling, however the 2 cards look very different physically.
Does anyone know what the difference is between these 2?

  • I am recording sales training on mac need microphone which is the ebst one

Hi I am recording CD's and DVD's  on MAC for sale and need to know the best recording microphone or even if I really need one?

Shure SM7B would be great but truthfully almost any decent mic will work in that context. Keep your computer out of the way as much as possible if it has a noisy hard drive. I do reasonable voice over using a cheap Logitech headset in fcpx. It's nothing close to pro quality but often people spend a lot more than they need to. I'd consider ordering a couple of mics of various quality from someplace like BH that will allow returns.

  • I need a mail server without SMTP authentification. Which is the right one? Or how to configure OSX Lions Mailserver?

    Hello folks,
our HP Scanner with email delivery is one the most used pieces of hardware in our office. Just scan and get delivered to your inbox. That works easy and perfect.
Unfortunately we had to change our standard mail server and now a prerequsisite is the smtp authentification. But the HP admin interface on the scanner does not allow to enter smtp auth credentials. It only supports smtp delivery without username/password. Now I have a serious problem. I cannot find any external provider that supports smtp mail delivery without smtp authentification (against spam of course, I understand that).
I have a OSX Lion Server running as a file server in our network. But I have no clue if there's a way to use it's mailserver without smtp auth.
Is there anyone who can help me out?
    Cheers,
    Joo-Chen

I have a OSX Lion Server running as a file server in our network. But I have no clue if there's a way to use it's mailserver without smtp auth.
    Sure. Turn it on.
The default mode is to not require authentication. You have to turn on authentication if you want it.
Changing authentication on/off is a matter of clicking a radio button.
