2 different expresscard/34s with 2 firewire 800 ports are not fully recognized on new macbook pro 17" under lion

We have 2 expresscard/34s, a Belkin ec1394b2 and a Startech "FireWire 800 ExpressCard". Both are "reported" to suppport OS X but neither does more than show "PCI FireWire 800 ExpressCard" in the available interfaces list in Network Preferences with a status of "Not Connected". In the System Information report under "FireWire Device tree" it shows the built-in FW 800 port as "FireWire Bus"  with a drop down arrow which expands to the proper hard/software dtails and then "FireWire Bus" with no dropdown arrow, no more info.
Now that I have them I see no reference to mac or OS X but I've seen a number of reviews of these cards from OS X users who claim to be using them happily. It's a long weekend so everyones tech support is gone gone gone. Any suggestions?

A) It seems your problem is an hardware failure. It happens and I don't think the way you use Firewire devices is the cause of that problem. It's just bad luck. That said, it's probably a good thing to use the power supply of your hard drive instead of bus-power.
B) If you want a new computer and you don't need something portable, I think the iMac is an excellent choice for the price. Over a Macbook Pro, you'll gain a bigger screen, FW400 port, etc, and you'll pay less than if you buy a laptop.
C) If you still want to go with a laptop, you can hook the Duet to your hard drive but I don't think the bus will be able to power both devices. Therefore, you'll absolutely need to use your hard drive's power supply.

    Hi,
I purchased Huawei Dongle and trying to connect with my new MacBook Pro (OS- Mountain Lion) USB port 3.0 but unfortunately it does not support.
When I plugged in my macbook the power is flowing in dongle due green light blinking twice in every 3 sec but no connection found or diver shown.
Please let me know how I have to use it. I got some suggestion for USB hub 2.0 but It does not make any sense and driver installation.
So please suggest proper direction to use it and provide link to install any driver.
    Thanks

Yes Clinton I did same, but they were (Huawei customer support) surprised about this problem, They behave like they have no idea about USB 2.0 and  3.0 knowledge. They handsUp that reason I posted my problem in this forum.
So is there any better solution to use any mediator between these USB version handling, Please let me know.
    Thanks

  • What FireWire 800 drive (2.5") to build/buy for MacBook Pro?

Hello community, this topic is to request a little help choosing a FireWire 800 storage solution. About once every two days, I need to run a virtual machine, either Windows XP or Ubuntu. The disk image is currently located on an external USB 2.0 Western Digital hard drive, which is also used for not-speed-sensitive storage. Performance is decent, as long as I quit all possible application before launching (I have 4GB RAM, planning on 8GB upgrade very soon) and don't launch too many apps in the virtual machine, however, I feel performance is lagging since I can see the virtual hard drive indicator turning red most of the time, and the 4 white LEDs on the WD going back and forth (although it doesn't necessarily indicate heavy activity). Especially, restoring to and from saved states routinely takes 45 seconds or more. The external drive is about 90% full most of the time, and may be a contributing factor to the slow feeling. Hence, I thought about putting this FireWire 800 port to good use, and plug a compatible drive in it. I had the following requirements:
3-year warranty an absolute minimum, 5 years
would be ok (my current WD MyPassport has 5). Reason is I consider if manufacturers trust their drive for 5 years, it shouldn't be a source of worry for many years to come. I consider 2-year warranty to be substandard drives.
2.5" form factor. Reason is I rarely happen to have enough room or steady power to lay and plug a full 3.5" drive, unless it uses a battery, which is extremely rare and would add bulk in my bag.
Ability to saturate FW800 port. I think a more performant drive would be a waste of money since they constantly go down in price, and I may be able to get a better deal by the time I switch to Thunderbolt-based MacBook Pro. Admittedly, this is a "soft" requirement, given expected use.
Under $150 (would come to $170 tax,S&H included)
I understand pretty well that the two latter points come in opposition and need a compromise, so I think a large compromise on drive size is to be expected. So far, I thought about these solutions:
Fully manufactured, i.e. Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex + FW800 dongle. Major drawback: dongle is expensive, and appears to use a proprietary connector. If it breaks, impossible to replace it quickly. Alternative: LaCie Rugged (pretty big for a 2.5" drive), G-Tech (usually quite expensive).
Handmade from performance platter drives, i.e. Western Digital Scorpio Black + FW800 enclosure. Major drawback: wouldn't saturate a FW800 port since it comes in SATA300 flavor only, but I get the strong feeling it would perform better than many manufactured drives.
Handmade from SSD, i.e. Corsair + FW800 enclosure. Major drawback: from this page, major compromises would have to be made on capacity. Affordable SSDs seem to be limited to 40 or 60GB, and while I don't put capacity as a priority, I may have to use the high-performance drive for other tasks, such as editing short high-def movies, or add a third virtual machine. Considering the Windows virtual drive needs to be around 15GB, and 25 for Ubuntu, 60GB wouldn't leave enough elbow room.
What solution would be better advisable, and what arguments would you put forth for it?

    Reply on a dead topic:
After a word, Macally used the Oxford chipset. So Macally I went, and put a Scorpio Black 500GB inside. Ran fine, but I got it stolen in a coffee shop a few days after I started to use it. Had no time yet to do a backup, so data was lost. Surveillance cams weren't working at the time of the theft, nobody has seen anything, and, as usual, police won't do anything about it.
Second drive I got was also a Scorpio Black I put inside the Mercury Mini enlosure from OWC. Marginal difference experienced from the Macally, but most recent Oxford chipset would ensure fewer head parkings, that are very noisy and unsettling, so much I thought there was something wrong with the drive, and still think there is, despite reassurance from Western Digital.
The mobile drive I happen to use is the lesser-performance G-Drive from Hitachi, a 750GB version.

  • Top users, are you gonna upgrade to new Macbook Pro?

Im just wondering if any of the top users here are planning to upgrade to the new Macbook Pro - or do you plan to stay with your current Macbook Pro?
I'm thinkin of buyin, but would love some input from the pros
    thanks a lot!

    Hi Necronym,
I'm very interested in your reply. I'm a photographer, too. Am soon going to change from my MacPro tower and 22-inch cinema display to a MacBook Pro. Not so much for airport/lap/in-the-field but because I will be moving seasonally between two houses in different parts of the country, and want a more mobile setup. I had assumed I should hold out for the 17-inch model to be upgraded like the 15-inch, mostly because of the screen size. Haven't had a chance yet to get to an Apple Store to compare.
Do you find the 15-inch screen big enough, or do you do most of your hardcore photo editing on a different Mac? Did you find your former 17-inch unwieldy?
    Thanks for any input!

  • The preinstalled ilife programs are not showing up on my macbook pro

I just bought a new macbook pro that had been returned to best buy. When I turned it on the ilife programs are not there like they are supposed to be. What do I need to do.

You need to Register that Mac with Apple, Create an Apple ID (if you don't already have one) Log on to the Mac App Store with your Apple ID and then you should be able to download and install the iLife Apps that you want.
BB foramatted the drive and reinstalled the OS. In doing so the iLife Apps were not re-installed as they are not part of the OS. So now it is up to you to get them.
If the above steps don't work for you then you may need to call Apple to straighten it out.

  • Firewire port not recognized on new MacBook Pro

I've been using time machine to backup my computer to a LaCie external drive and noticed that it hasn't done it for over two weeks. I can hear the drive when it's connected but it doesn't show up on my desktop. I plugged it into my old macbook and it worked fine. I'm using a new adapter made for this model of macbook pro — a firewire 800.
I need to use this computer for work and am hoping there is an upgrade that might fix it. I can't afford the time it will take at a mac store to fix this. Any advice?
    thanks so much

dose the hard drive show up in system profiler or disk utility?

  • HT2275 Do I need to choose "Share this printer on the network" for printers that are not connected directly to my MacBook Pro? I have two HP printers connected to an Airport Extreme (WiFi turned off). I connect by WiFi to another Airport Extreme w cable t

I have three Airport Extreme (AE) routers in my home network.
The main AE is set up for wifi access. The other two are connected by ethernet cables to the main AE. My MacBook Pro connects to the network wirelessly through the main AE. The AE in my office has two HP printers connected to it by ethernet cables. I have a Kodak All-in-one that is connected by USB to my MacBook Pro.
I reset my printer connections on my MacBook Pro and had to add all the printers back to my printer list. I don't know if I understand what the checkbox "Share this printer on the network" in the Print & Fax System Preferences window is for. My guess is that I don't need to share printers unless they are connected to my MacBook Pro by USB, so I should uncheck the "Share this printer on the network" box for the two HP printers that are connected to the AE. I print to them over the network, but they're not connected directly to any computer. I thought if my MacBook Pro wasset to share them and was shutdown, the printers might not be available to my Mac mini or Dell PC, which connect by ethernet to the office AE (which has the two printers connected to it).
    What should I do?
For printers connected directly to a Mac (or PC) by USB, check the "Share this printer on the network" box? In my Sharing Preferences, I check "Share Printers."
For printers connected to the AE by ethernet, UNcheck the "Share this printer on the network" box on my Macs (& PCs?) when I add the printers to my printer list? In my Sharing Preferences, I UNcheck "Share Printers?"

Question is - will the 2 networks (using auto channel negotiations) exist well in the same house or will there be interference?
Things will be fine since the AirPort Express or AirPort Extreme will automatically search for a good wireless channel. If you assign a separate name for the wireless network, then devices will need to log in separately to this network. The extending device will need to be configured in Bridge Mode.
My suggestion would be to configure what is known as a "roaming" network in your question #2. In this case, you would assign the same wireless network name, security and password settings to the extending device and configure it in Bridge Mode.
The advantage to #2 is that you will be able to walk your laptop from a location near the Time Capsule and as you move close to the extending device, the laptop will automatically switch to pick up the stronger signal from the extending AirPort.
You are actually creating a separate network in #2, so you have the advantage of maximum bandwidth for both the TC network and the AirPort network.
Question - does the Airport Express have to be directly connected to the TC or can that connected be through a switched network?
I'm assuming that you are asking about an Ethernet switch here, correct?  The AirPort Express or AirPort Extreme can connect to the Ethernet switch, or directly back to a LAN port on the Time Capsule, whichever is easier to setup.
Question 2 - assuming I can connect the Airport Express to the TC over a switched network, will "extending" the network using the Ethernet network still reduce my overall wireless bandwidth?
Connecting the remote device using Ethernet is by far the best way to extend a wireless network because it maintains maximum bandwidth on the network. This is the way that any good commercial network is designed.
Post back if you need any tips to get things setup.

  • Drives are not mounting to desktop on macbook pro.

External USB drives, SD cards and even DVD media is not mounting to desktop when connected.
This is a new problem for me and have not had this issue previously. I have successfully connected the same devices in the past.
They all show up in the disc utility as connected. I am unable to mount them from disc utility (this button is disabled) and they are not showing up in Finder either.
    Please help!

    Hi Paul,
Sorry for the late answer. I live in Europe, so that's why I was asleep ;-)
Basically the command tells your computer to unhide everything on your Desktop, so if you don't have a Desktop, something is definitely wrong.
My guess is that there's something wrong with your account on that computer. You can check that by creating a new account in System Preferences (click on Accounts, click the lock in the bottom-left corner and then click the "+" button just above).
Then try mounting "some" media and see if it appears on the new user's Desktop. If not, I would highly recommend to reinstall Mac OS X.
    HTH,
    Jasper.

  • When I migrated the contents of my iMac to my new MacBook Pro (both running Lion), I ended up with duplicate icons in the launchpad. How do I get rid of them?

When I used migration Assistant to transfer stuff from my iMac to my MacBook Pro, both running the latest update of Lion, I ended up with duplicate icons in the Launchpad. How do I correct this situation. Some can be deleted using the iPad method of holding down an icon until they all jiggle and then clicking the "X" to delete. However, most do not have x's appear next to them. Otherwise, the migration seemed to go okay.

Launchpad will display an icon for each copy of an application that is currently installed (as well as any aliases to those applications), so you will see more than one icon for an application if you have more than one version of the application installed or aliased. So did you create any aliases of these apps on your old computer? If so, delete them.

  • Firewire 800 port suddenly not working

    Hi,
I own an Imac 2.8 GHZ computer. It has worked flawlessly since I bought it. Suddenly when I turn on my external firewire hard drive it won't mount. This drive mounts on every other computer and will mount if I connect it via the Firewire400 port. I have tried using different cables and I still get the same result.
I am running 10.5.5 and have 4 gigs of Ram
    Thanks

    Gary,
Try doing a SMC and PRAM reset:
    1. Turn off your iMac and unplug everything from it for 30 seconds.
    2. Plug in the power cord, keyboard and mouse only.
    3. Press the power button and immediately hold down the Option, Command, P & R keys until you hear the second gong then release the keys. Your machine will start up normally, then check for the issues you are having.

  • Will Pro Tools M-Powered 7.3 + Firewire 1814 work ok w new MacBook Pro?

I have Pro Tools M-Powered 7.3 that I have never been able to use and an M-Audio Firewire 1814 and it has also not been working with my soon-to-be junked PC for quite some time.
I'm going to scrap my entire system and go back to Mac and buy the new MacBook Pro for the express purpose of using it with my Firewire 1814 running Pro Tools M-Powered 7.3 (or an upgrade if there is one and I'm eligible to get it...?).
There are so many confusing instructions and tips out there and I just wanted to ask someone knowledgeable BEFORE I go out and spend $2,800 (that I don't have to begin with) that the laptop WILL indeed work with the above-described interface and software. I realize these are questions for M-Audio and Digidesign also (and I have asked), but in any case, I'm hoping you nice folks out there might lend me your expertise as well if you can spare a moment.
I did read on Digidesign's site that an external firewire drive or two would be ideal in use with Pro Tools M-powered. I haven't investigated enough to yet know how many firewire ports are on the top-tier new MacBook Pro, but I'm hoping it's enough to accommodate my 1814 interface and the externals recommended. (Or if you have knowledge/solutions/recommendations I'm all ears... help!).
If you know of any reason I shouldn't buy the laptop for use with the 1814 and Pro Tools M-Powere 7.3 as listed above, PLEASE tell me. I have an entire, very expensive PC system that for the better part of a year, has sat dormant because I can't get it to work with the interface and software without it creating noise and clicks. And no one was able to help me resolve this no matter how much noise I made and research I did trying to resolve the problems. And Pro Tools would always shut itself down at random during use despite the fact I have tons of RAM, disk space, a 2.13 GhZ processor, etc.
My hope is that a new (and portable-- something I also really need-- I plan to use this for performance as well with Ableton or similar... also interested in any information or opinions with regard to using the new MacBook Pro for that as well) Mac will resolve this...
That I'll just plug it in and everything will magically and easily work. I'd love to hear this is so. Any and all help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance for your expertise.

    orrisimo,
I, personally, do not have experience with this, but I have a friend who uses Macs exclusively, running Protools with a MOTU box. He does this professionally, not as a "hobby," and he is very knowledgeable about all the ins and outs.
As far as I know, he has absolutely no problems with Protools, ever. I recall that he did have to hold off a bit in upgrading to Leopard because of initial incompatibilities, but all that is in the past. He uses an old iBook (still), an Intel iMac, and more recently a Mac Pro powerhouse, all with no problems.
I would expect that everything will work seamlessly, provided you get word from the various support people that your versions and models are all compatible. If you want me to ask my friend about anything or get definitive confirmation from him, I would be happy to do so when I see him next. Let me know.
The newest 15" Macbook Pro comes only with a single Firewire 800 port. All the ports have been moved to the left side of the casing, so space is at a premium. FW 400 devices can be connected using an adapter cable, but there is still just that one port. If you go with a 15", you might need an Expresscard FW card to connect your FW drives (not a bad idea, anyway, since even older multi-port MBPs use just one controller).
The current 17" Macbook Pro has not yet been updated to the "unibody" construction, and still has both a FW 400 and a FW 800 port (again, FW 400 devices can be connected to an 800 port with an adapter). What the future unibody update will bring to the 17", we do not know.
