2 display hook up

Hi Folks
I have a G4 Dual MDD and want to buy 2 new 20 in. cinema displays. I have the nvidia gforce4 Video card that has 1 ADC and 1 DVI connector. and I believe the New Displays use DVI and not ADC, is that correct?
So if I want 2 displays, will I have to get an adaptor to go from DVI to ADC? or do they come with adaptors?
thanks for your help

You will have to buy one ADC to DVI adapter.

  • 23" Cinema Display hook up to DirecTV receiver?

I have tried hooking up my 23" Cinema display directly to my HD DirecTV receiver. My DirecTV receiver has HDMI output. So I bought a HDMI to DVI adapter. I was not able to get a picture on the display. The monitor was continusly flashing the power LED three consecutive times. My DirecTV receiver supports these resoultions: 480i/480p/720p/1080i. Is it a resolution problem?
Should I be able to do this? I thought that LCD displays could be used as a TV monitor? Am I wrong in this assumption?

There are two big barriers to this working. One is that the DirectTV box's output is likely protected by HDCP. The ACD can't perform the required HDCP handshake and so the DirectTV box will not output a signal.
The second problem is that Apple's displays have an architecture that is unique in the world of monitors. They don't have conventional multi-sync capabilities and can only work from one fixed format, fixed frequency resolution. They can't run from ATSC compatible signals like the ones you listed.

  • Can the apple cinema display hook up to a new MacBook (i.e. is there an appropriate adaptor)?

Is there an appropriate adaptor to hook the new MacBook (USB-C port) to the Cinema Display?

The Apple HDMI adapter allows the Macbook to be charged while it is using an external display (via HDMI)
Even if an Apple Thunderbolt display was compatible with the Macbook video output  you would not have all of the other docking features of the TB display available to the Macbook (extra USB ports, charging etc).
BTW - there is another discussion about TB displays:
How to connect Apple Thunderbolt Display to new Retina MacBook?

  • Darkening display when multiple displays hooked up

I work at a church and we recently changed the cable we use to run video to our projectors.  It works great, but when we plug in the USB-to-DVI for our stage display the projectors get much darker.  What could be causing this and how do I fix it?
    The old setup was:
         Main Display
Mini Display port > VGA, 100' VGA cable to splitter amplifier, projectors.
         Stage Display
USB > DVI converter box, DVI > HDMI cable, TV
The new setup just exchanges the 100' VGA cable for a mini high rez cable that was installed in the wall.  Each end of the cable has the 5 BNC connectors.  If just the projectors are hooked up then it is great and you can't tell a difference from the old setup.  As soon as the Stage display gets plugged in and it comes back from recognizing that display the projectors get significantly darker.
We've solved it temporarily by recalibrating the projectors in their darker state, but since we use the projectors with and without the stage display this isn't a perminant solution.
Let me know if you need any more details, thanks!

You may need more RAM. In MacBooks, display memory uses the main RAM. With two displays, there is less RAM available for applications, which can make things slow.

  • Two 23" displayed hooked on same G5 give different colours

I have just bought a new G5 and hooked my 23" HD Cinema display to it. I used to use it with my Powerbook, and I missed the spanning feature, so I decided to get a second one which was delivered and installed yesterday.
Immediately I noticed a difference in the colors of the two units. The older display has a whitewashed look on all colors as if the contrast is set too low.
The colorsync utility reports that the factory setting for each monitor is different. 42482EC.icc for the new one and 424832D.icc for the old one.
Does this mean that I have to live with the color difference or is it possible that the older monitor has a damaged backlight? I have two months left under guarantee for it so hopefully I will be able to get this repaired (replaced) for free.
    Any ideas or suggestions?

You need to calibrate your displays. If you really want them to match, you will need to use a colorimeter with a software bundle that includes dual display matching. It's really tough to do "by eye" but you can probably get "reasonably close" by using OSX's "expert mode" calibration tool. It is completely unrealistic (unless you are Irish) to expect two displays to match "out of the box" even if they are "identical" units.

  • Tow Display hook up?

I recently purchased a 15" studio display to hook up in addition to my 23" HD Cinema display. Both have the ADC connector, so do I need to install another video card and if so what kind should I get? I am a final cut editor and need the extra real estate on the monitors.

You will get better results with one video card with two ports. Ideally one ADC and one DVI, but two DVI will work. A DVI port will need a DVI to ADC adapter.

You can't get two ADC ports on one computer, so you will need at least one adapter.

  • Why does the Retina Screen on MBPR2013 make a Weird Flash when I have a External Display via HDMI hooked up?

I just bought a new 2013 early MACBOOK PRO RETINA.  When i have an external Display hooked up via the HDMI port, I noitce when I wake the computer UP it has a Different type OF QUICK FLASH that comes up than when there is nothing hooked up so I don't know if that makes sense to anyone, but its very disturbing to me, it makes me wonder if there is something wrong with the HDMI PORT ?????   Has anyone else experienced this or knows if this is NORMAL behavior of the new RETINA displays or the HDMI port makes it FLASH weird upon WAKE UP???   I have unplugged the HDMI and when I do the SCREEN comes up normally it just blinks on.  But when HDMI is used its light lightening stike.  Don't know  how else to explain it, maybe i need to do a video and Post a video.

One more disturbing thing.  When the screen on my MBP goes black and I check the system preferences for "Displays", the MacBook Pro display is not presented as an existing display.  Only the still-functioning Apple 20" Cinema Display.
    Where did it go??

  • Lion and Multi-Display (2 external monitors + built-in Display) [Thunderbolt, USB adapters/eVGA UV+]

    Hi everyone,
I just completed an upgrade to Lion and while I love it I've suddenly found myself short 1 display. I use 2x24" with my MacBook Pro - 1 via mini Display Port [the Thunderbolt port] and another via an eVGA UV+ [both displays have a resolution of 1920x1080].
There are two things that I am wondering about:
Has anyone else who's upgraded found their UV+ adapter to be useless all of the sudden? I'm contacting eVGA to find out how soon we can expect a functional OSX 10.7 Lion driver for that but in the meantime...
Has anyone heard anything of a Thunderbolt splitter "adapter" - it is obvious that you can have 2 displays chained to a MacBook Pro, as long as both of these displays are of the Thunderbolt Cinema Display variety ... seeing as I don't have two grand and already own 2 smaller monitors that I'd been using with Snow Leopard for quite some time now I was curious if there's just a way to ditch the USB adapter and just have the Thunderbolt port on my 2011 MBP drive both displays (I am fully aware that the GPU is capable of it but have yet to find a hardware display port or thunderbolt cable that splits in 2 so I can just hook each display into it and call it a day).
Thank in advance to anyone and everyone who provides any information related to that stuff as I'd greatly appreciate your help ... once you're used to the extra screen real estate going down from 3 screens to 2 can be pretty painful.
On that same note a general observation about Lion is that while I love full-screen apps I'll barely ever use them whenever I have external displays hooked up as Lion seems to insist on making the full screen app go to the primary display while completely blocking off the secondary display (rendering it useless). Hoping that Apple will make the UX for mulit-display folks nicer someday, I know their focus was just to release Lion now but there's absolutely room for improvement as far as that goes.
Thanks in advance to anyone and everyone who responds to this post!

Turns out that's not truly the case - see http://www.macrumors.com/2011/09/16/apple-thunderbolt-display-with-multiple-moni tors/ for details but the short of it is that if you just get one and plug in a Display Port Monitor you won't get that extra screen real estate after all.
Yes... the actual marketing 'statement' says you are unable to connect the mDP display "directly" to the back of the new TB display.  Yes...
But... from what i hear...  if you have some other TB display "directly" connected to the downstream of the TB display, you can 'then' add your older mDP display to the chain at that point.  You just can't have the older mDP directly to the new TB display.
And this still stands true if you read previous info from Apple website.  It's all about the wording...
So basically, you should still be able to have your MBPro + New TB display + (some other TB device w/ 2 ports) + old mDP display.

  • Help with CRT display...

    Hi all...
I'm facing a nasty problem connecting an external crt display to my MacBook Pro.
    First here's the setup:
    -Two MacBook Pro 2.4 GHz
    -G4 Cube 450MHz
    -iBook G3 800MHz
    -CRT DPRO750SB 17" (Nec-Mitsubishi)
    -CRT AT897D-1 17" (Formac)
    -Problem:
I used to connect the DPRO750SB to one MBP with the Apple's DVI/VGA adapter and everything was fine but now the display doesn't light up anymore.
Furthermore, trying to boot with the display hooked up make the computer crash during startup.
    -Clues:
The display and its VGA cable seems OK since there is no problem with the G4 Cube (VGA to VGA) nor the iBook (mini-DVI/VGA).
I have no problem using the Formac Display with both MBP (DVI/VGA).
The DPRO750SB icc profile don't show up anymore in the "Displays" Preference Pane.
I'm able to get the DPRO working sometimes by plug the Formac in, unplug it, then plug the DPRO in.
(in this case, the "Displays" Pref Pane says it's the Formac).
    I'm really lost now...
Any help would be greatly appreciated...
    Thanks
    Fabrice

  • Can I use a Sony all-in-one PC/TV as a second display for the G5?

I'm trying to build a pro music system out of my G5, which means that it should only have music software on it. I have an aluminum 20" display hooked up to my Radeon x800T video card, which has one DVI and one ADC jack on it. A pro music rig needs two 20" displays, at least, to display all the mixers, processors, instruments, etc. I have to use a PC for my financial stuff and need a new one. The new Sony Vaio VGC-VA 11G is their version of the i-Mac G5, it's all-in-one plus it is a 20" LCD TV with S-video and composite video in, not VGA in. If I get an ADC-to-VGA adaptor and hook that up to a VGA-to-S/video & composite adapter (all on ebay!), can I plug the output of the G5 to one of the video ins on the Sony Vaio and then use the Sony Vaio's TV as the second display (not simply mirroring the Apple display)? I guess it would be the same as using an LCD TV as a second, non-mirroring display. If it works, it's going to be cool!

By reading the user's manual, it appears that is possible. Download the User Manual from this link:

  • MacBook Pro running Lion 10.7.2 with second display

I have a 27" Samsung monitor as my main display hooked up to my MacBook Pro. I just recently updated to Lion. Now, sometimes, when I open the MBP and turn on the Samsung monitor the MBP screen stays black and I have to go to the Displays icon on the menu bar and click Detect Displays for the MBP screen to come on. I don't remember ever having this problem with Snow Leopard. Is there a setting somewhere that I am missing? Is anyone else having this problem?

Is your MB Pro Thunderbolt or MiniDisplay port? I don't have a different answer either way, just wondering. I have the same Samsung 27" and my MB Pro is the mid-2010 (MiniDisplay). I had this happen to me a couple of times. I had read -somewhere??- that it likely has something to do with HDMI. I'm going MiniDisplay>HDMI via an adapter. What had been more of a problem for me regarding 2 monitors was the new behavior of a dual monitor system on Lion. But like all the other changes we're all getting used to now I've adjusted.
I'm away from the Samsung 27 for ten days now but before I left home, I recall when I had the MB Pro screen black, detect displays didn't bring it back. Had to restart.

  • Question on the A1038 Cinema Display

A friend recently gave me his old display. I have a couple of questions about it - one of which I'm guessing I already know the answer to.
First, I have the display hooked up to the DVI video on the G4. I did not hook up the USB cable. The power light flashes 3 times, then off and repeats as long as the Mac is on. Any concerns about this? What does this indicate out of curiosity? I'm guessing my hook up may be a contributor.
Second, I love the sharpness of the image - especially after using a CRT display for years. The screen is a bit darker at the top compared to the bottom of the display. I am thinking the back lights are bad. Can this be remedied by myself or is it something I'll have to get used to? At this time the majority of the work I do doesn't require an evenly lit display. If I start doing more image editing again I can always plug my older monitor in since I have two video outs on the G4.
Thanks for any thoughts or help that is offered.

First do an smc reset when changing system configurations.  Do pram reset to just for the heck of it.
Next check or try to set your audio via Audio MIDI Setup (in Utilities).  See if you have better luck with that instead of the Sound preferences.

  • How can I set up a screen screen sharing VNC at a resolution higher than display?

I have a mid 2010 MacBook Pro 13in, and i have set up screen sharing to access over VNC. I want to view my mac on my 1920x1080 display hooked up to my PC. But when i do it is not full screen, it is the same resolution as my MBP. how can i run it at a higher resolution only over VNC?

As Cvid suggests, I create my "frames" in Photoshop. Not sure about all versions, but my PS has several Actions, just for frames, and I have made a few more, with a different "look."
I Save_As PSD, and just Import those as Footage (I do not need the capability to work with the individual Layers).
    Good luck,

  • My Mac Pro Desk Top computer no longer can "see" my second display??

I've tried reversing the connections on the back of the MacPro but it still doesn't "see" the second display.  I've had these two displays hooked up for years with no problems.  I recently upgraded to Mountain Lion and I just had the MacPro in the Apple Store for a  "One To One" transfer of data to my new MacBook Pro laptop.  When I brought it back home it still worked fine.  I then was cleaning up some stuff and I know I went into my "Users and Groups" panel in System Preferences and I did remove some items from the "Login Items" list that open automatically so maybe that is the problem??  I know the second display is getting power and recognizes it's connection to the compuiter because when I disconnect it, it says, "no signal" and when I reconnect it, it just goes to sleep.  Advice appreciated.
    Saratoga Lefty

Some of the graphics cards that had two DVI connectors had one Dual-Link (suitable for all resolutions including wider than 1920 wide) and one Single-Link (suitable for resolutions up to 1920, but not wider). This does not appear to be your problem, since both are less than 1920 wide.
The "Drivers" business is a complete Red Herring (Not Applicable), as the Mac does not use Drivers for displays -- it uses a unified driver for the Display CARD, and customizes it based on the capabilities reported by the Display when connected. In order to get this to work, the display must correctly self-identify.
To verify that the display is correctly detected, look in:
About This Mac > ( More Info ) > Graphics and Displays ...
... a correctly self-identified display shows its Name and its maximum resolution. be skeptical, this information does not update when you plug/unplug the display, and you have to close and re-open this window (or possibly the entire program) to get the information to refresh after a change.
If either display provides a USB cord, it must be plugged in to complete the display connection and provide display ID and control (this is much more common with Apple displays that third-party displays).
Is there any evidence of trauma to the display connectors or cables? Any bent pins on the connectors?
