-2.DNG Files: What's creating them?

I've noticed a handful of images in a catalog with the suffix -2 and file type DNG. Where are these coming from? Does Photoshop save edited images as DNG under some circumstances?

Hi Granite_1,
If you just install a hyper-v host , it should not happen .
Maybe you installed  open vpn software .
"There is a one-to-one correspondence between an OpenVPN process, an  OpenVPN config file, an OpenVPN log file, and a TAP-Win32 adapter which  represents an endpoint of a VPN tunnel."
The above sentence quoted from following link :
http://openvpn.net/index.php/open-source/documentation/install.html?start=1
Hope this helps

  • How do i open iweb files on a different computer than what I created them on? - Domain file can't be opened

I started a web page in the lab at school and want to open the file here on my computer. I saved the application support/iweb/domain file and have tried to replace the old one with it, but that doesnt work. I looked up where you can delete the last string in the com.apple.iweb.plist file but that would not work either. I've got the site published to a folder and the domain file saved and with me but thats all

Put the copied domain file somewhere, or rename it and put it in the Application Support/iWeb folder, and double-click it.  That should open it.

  • Can't open DNG files created with Mac CS5 downloader in Mac CS4 Photoshop

I recently installed CS5 on my mac but I kept CS4 installed as well.  I notice that I cannot open DNG files created with CS5 in Photoshop CS4.  Bridge CS4 shows the files only as icons - no image thumbnails.  I am able to open these same files on a Windows version of CS4.  Is there some plugin for my mac CS4 that will enable me to access the DNG files created with CS5?  Is there a way to use my CS5 downloader when converting my raw files from my camera to DNG files that will make them compatiple with PS and Bridge CS4?

Well, yes...but you'll need to modify your DNG Converter prefs to allow for that. You''ll need a recent (ideally current DNG Converter 6.4.1 or above) and click on the DNG Converter preferences and select the correct DNG Converter options. Check DNG Converter 6.4.1 (the current version) and click on "Change Preferences" to be sure select Camera Raw 5.4 and later then make sure CS4 is updated to ACR 5.7 (which is the last version of ACR for CS4) However, the changes made to ACR 6.x really should be adopted since IQ for ACR 6.4.x is a lot better...

  • Saving .dng files in raw with sidecar

I loaded raw images as .dng -- edited the photos -- and am trying to export as "File Settings / Format: Original" (with the attendant side car XMP).  The export folder still contains .dng files and I do not understand what else must be done. I'm a iMac user.  Thanks for the help.

    Chuck,
One other method to extract the XMP from the DNG would be the following:
In LR, Save Metadata to File on all your DNGs
Make your DNG Files read only
Open them in ACR (e.g. using PS)
Make a trival change to the image and then reverse it (e.g. change WB from what it is to something else, then back)
    Click Done in ACR
ACR will try to write the XMP data into the DNG, but because it's read only, it will write a sidecar XMP for it.
Step 4 might not be necessary to achieve a write-back of the XMP.
Of course, you still need to get your RAW from somewhere ...

  • Converting DNG to Lossy Compression DNG files in LR4. SWP file?

I am trying to convert some DNG files that were created in LR3 to the Lossy compression in LR4. Lr4 creates a SWP file and the DNG file is not compressed. What is the SWP file and what do I need to do to correctly compress the DNG files?

SWP file is a temporary file. The conversion will take some time, after the file is successfully converted, the SWP file is removed...

This is the last paragraph from my very first response to you, post #1 in this thread:
…Additionally, you need to install the DNG Converter, not just "download" it, and you need to launch it and run it on each folder of NEFs you wish to convert to raw DNGs.  [emphasis added]

Depending on what directory or directories you were erasing from you've certainly erased important system files and perhaps important applications files as well. If you have been using TimeMachine to back your computer up you should reboot into recovery mode (restart and hold Command + R until you see the Apple icon) and perform a restore.
If you haven't, boot into recovery mode anyway and choose the install OS option. Keep your fingers crossed that the OS is the only thing you deleted and that this works. You may also find it necessary to reinstall some of your software.

Is it wise to keep the Nikon camera files "DSC's"  after downloading them and converting to DNG files via Adobe converter for lightroom use. In other words do the DNG files have all the raw data I would ever need in processing or should I save the camera's DSC files?

DNG files do not contain some metadata supplied by the camera, which can be used by the manufacturer's software. Thus, if you don't keep the original Raw photo, you will lose this information.
If your 1000% sure you're never going to use the manufacturer's software, then this isn't a problem. But who can be sure what software you will be using 10 years from now?

  • Why would two copies of Lightroom 5 create DNG files with different sizes from the same RAW file? (size is dramatically different, on the order of doubled in size.)

I have a copy of LIghtroom 5 on my office computer and a personal copy on my home computer. I convert my RAW files to DNG with Lightroom when I import them. Files I shoot for work also get imported on my home workstation. I noticed today that the resulting DNG files for the same RAW image are widely different in size. The ones at home are roughly twice as big as the ones from the office.
To the best of my knowledge, things are set up the same on both workstations. Any idea what setting might be causing this variation?

I don't think it's possible to apply lossy compression when importing directly into Lightroom.  I know you can do it with the DNG converter and on export but I don't think this is the case here.
In which case we need to determine which set-up producing is the "correctly" sized files.  What's the camera and what are the respective file sizes from work and home?

  • DNG files created with LR4 no longer display thumbnails w/ FastPictureViewer & Win7

I've been using the FastPictureViewer Codec pack so that DNG and camera RAW files show as thumbnails in Explorer for quite some time. Upon upgrading to LR4, DNG files no longer display as thumbnails, but as the generic Windows icon for an image.
Upon researching the issue, and upgrading the Codecs from the supplier (which still did not fix the issue), the supplier tells me the following:
What we solved [in the update] was a crash with the new files. Adobe did not document their
changes, so there is not much we can do except ignore the files. This is
what happens when owners of proprietary formats decide to change stuff
    without notice
If you turn off the "fast load" and "lossy" options the DNG will still be
created following the published 1.3 specification and will work with 3rd
    party software including ours.
The "new DNGs" are for Adobe private use only at the moment. We don't know
(beyond vague promises on employees personal blogs) if they will ever
document what they did and publish an updated specification, they are
certainly under no obligation to do so. The decision they took not to
release updated DNG specs even before LR4 came out was a deliberate one.
While I resolved the problem by turning "fast load" off, I find it highly disturbing that Adobe has made undocumented changes to the DNG format that break 3rd party software. I thought the whole idea of DNG was that it was an OPEN FORMAT and was to prevent situations such as this. At least this is how they sold it to the public and their argument against "proprietary camera manufactuer RAW formats" that could "change at any time".

Actually JS, RAW files converted to DNG with fast load checked from LR4.0 are read, thumbnails and full images are displayed in preview and with Finder in OSX Lion 10.7.3, along with keywords, EXIF data etc. I don't know whether the preview is the RAW or the fast loaded jpeg
    Not that it helps you
Adobe mentioned that they will be making the 1.3 data specs available in the next couple of months, I canna remember the link offhand, and it was a formal post, not an employee blog
Life changes, things upgrade, that is the way of things, but it is very frustrating.

  • XMP files not being created with DNGs...

I'm used to using Bridge with ACR to process Nikon NEFs. But a recent camera update has me experimenting with converting the D3's NEFs to DNG files and editing them with CS2 and Bridge 1.04 which works better on my system. I've also experimented with CS3 and Bridge 2.1.1.9 with the same DNG files.
In both cases XMP files are not being created when working with DNG files. I have enabled "Save image settings in : Sidecar ".xmp" files" turned ON. But they do not seem to be generated and I assume the ACR adjustments are being embedded in the DNG file. Meanwhile doing edits on NEF files continues to create .xmp files as expected.
I find .xmp files to be very useful and I'm wondering why they're missing with DNG files? Are they hiding somewhere other than in the same folder that the images reside in?
    Thanks.
    Russell

    > The information contained in the XMP file is stored in the DNG file so there is no need for a separate file.
Aww, yuck!! That's a real drag...
When editing lots of files (yesterday's shoot produced 8GB) I back everything up to off-line storage and then, after doing all my edits and crops in ACR, I only have to copy over the small XMP files which takes no time at all.
So if I re-edit the DNG with ACR I have to re-copy ALL the files again to the off-line storage.
I used to sometimes even save 2 versions of the xmp files when I needed 2 different crops of the same images, such as doing a wide screen 'cinema' crop for a corporate client's Intranet presentation of their event, as well as more standard crops to be used for their newsletters.
Guess I won't be using DNG any more..
Thanks for the help Kees :-)

  • Create a DNG file that does not show changes when viewed by others

I am adjusting my RAW Images in Adobe Lightroom and want to export them as DNG without betraying the evidence of my post production efforts- is there a way to save an altered file as a DNG without showing the client which changes I have made when they open and review the files in CS3 (bridge/camera raw)?

    > is there a way to save an altered file as a DNG without showing the client which changes I have made when they open and review the files in CS3 (bridge/camera raw)?
The raw data itself is not affected by the adjustments, only the metadata. This means, that the adjustments you made are recorded in the DNG file in XMP format, which is quite clear-text, like
    > +1.0
       25
       0
       False
       Custom
         0, 0
         22, 30
         51, 68
         128, 128
         206, 149
         255, 255
As this can be seen by anyone, who knows where and what for to look, you need to have ACR record the adjustments in XMP sidecar files (which is a better way anyway, you can archive the original file and the adjustments separate).

I have a file that was created in FH 11 and I am using same version.Originator opens this file and everything is fine and also an earlier version opens it fine. When I open it it shifts the links 1/8" up and to the left.Has anybody ever had this happen to them?

What file format(s) are the "links"?
If raster images, do they contain clipping paths or transparency?
What is your platform and OS?
Were the FH documents created on the same platform (Mac or PC) as the one you are currently using?
Were the linked files created on the same platform (Mac or PC) as the one you are currently using?
Can you reproduce the problem with a newly created document and the same linked images?
There was once an issue with transparent 1-bit TIFF images shifting, but I believe that was in a previous version of FH.

  • DNG files created with LR4 do not show thumbnails

    Hi,
When using LR3 to create DNG files from my RAW files, those files would show me thumbnails of my image in Windows Explorer.  I am running Windows/7 (64) and have installed a CODEC from "Fast Picture Viewer" that allows thumbnails from RAW & DNG files to be shown.   It seems, however, that the thumbnails do not show for DNG's created with LR4.
To Remedy this I uninstalled the CODEC.  Downloaded the most recent version and installed it but this did not fix the problem.
I then went to the user forum for the CODEC product and searched for my problem.  I found a thread who's solution is to turn off "Embed Fast Load Data" when exporting to DNG and it fixes the problem.  I tried this and indeed it did fix it.  The responder went on to say ".....When this option is enabled the files created are no longer DNGs (just an undocumented private format of Adobe that no one else can read to this date)".   This statement surprised me as it is counter to what I understand Adobe created DNG to be.  Can I get some input on this comment as if true it is very troubling.
My second question is that I see where to turn off the "Embed Fast Load Data" in the LR Export module, but where do I do the same thing in the Import module when I'm selecting import mode "Copy to DNG"?
And, my thrid question is this.  If indeed the DNG files created by LR4 are proper DNG files and this CODEC is just flawed in some way, does anyone have a better way to allow image thumbnails to be shown in Windows Explorer?
    Thanks -- Dan

    Hi David,
You testing does not coincide with mine.  I have consistently kept "Use
lossy compression" turned off.  With lossy turned off, it seems that using
Fast Data Load prevents the thumbnails from displaying whereas turning off
"Fast Data Load" allows the thumbnail to be shown.
Below is comment from Adobe confirming that they have yet to release the
    spec containing "Fast Data Load".

  • What type of files can we create in Java?

In general what type of files can we create in Java?
For example, we can create .dat and .txt files as follows:
    DataOutputStream ostream;
    ostream = new DataOutputStream(new FileOutputStream("myfile1.dat"));
    or
    ostream = new DataOutputStream(new FileOutputStream("myfile2.txt"));
    Can we create ASCII?
Thank you in advance for your answers.

In general what type of files can we create in Java? You know that a file is nothing more than a series of ones and zeros, with eight of those bundled together as something called a byte. What they actually mean is what you make them to mean. Short: you can write and read any file type you like, but doing that semantically correct it is your responsibility.
