2 Drive RAID 0+1 Possible/Worth it?

Hi,
I'm new to the forums and have scanned much of the info on RAIDs yet still remain a little confused. I just received and set up my 2.8 Mac Pro and want to create a better workflow for my graphic design work. I have a 500 Gig boot drive and only want to run apps and os on that. I wanted to add at least two internal drives for client files but wasn't sure if I can set them up for RAID 0+1 with Disk Utility (hope the terminology is correct!) so that I have faster transfer rates along with mirroring. I currently use a simple hardware RAID 1 external box with two 500 Gig drives connected w/FW 800. Seems to be alright and piece of mind but slow every time both drives need to spin up. Do you need to have 4 drives for striping and mirroring or will two work? Will I notice any performance increases with only two drives or should I just run RAID1? How much does having a separate scratch drive help for Photoshop? (That would be a third drive added for scratch if it would help)
I'm set up with an 8 core 2.8 MP with 10 Gigs of RAM running all CS3 apps. (Love the new machine!!)
Thanks in advance for your help and brain power!!

RAID 0 is also known as Striped RAID. This type of array joins two or more drives together to form one large storage space. Data throughput to such an array is usually much faster than the throughput of a single drive.
RAID 1 is known as a Mirrored RAID. This type of array pairs two equally sized drives together such that one drive mirrors the content of the other drive. The total amount of storage is no more than that of a single drive. Throughput may be slightly slower on writes because data must be written twice - once to each drive.
RAID 0+1 (or 1+0) is a combination of the above - two RAID 0 arrays joined into Mirrored array. This arrangement provides the greater storage capacity and speed of the RAID 0 with the failure protection of a Mirrored RAID. It also provides a form of data redundancy when used in a basic data storage setup.

  • 14 drive RAID 5

I have read in other posts that is not posible to have a 14 (250GB) drive RAID 5. I need to have a RAId with all the 14 drives because of performance requirements. At the same time I need to create two logical volumes to prevent the whole storage capacity to get full. Is it possible?
    Thank you.

Thank you Bruce for your help, I finally could create the partitions as I need. After creating the two RAID 5 LUNs, I had first to partition them into two volumes each one. Then I could create two RAID 0 using that volumes.
My last question is, I decided to do like that because of performance but is it a reliable way to partition an Xserve RAID? It seems to be a so complicated way. Thanks again.

  • Changing physical drives, moving boot partition - possible?

I intend to upgrade the hard drives on a server (stand-alone, standard installation, 10.5.1 Server). When building a new larger drive into the machine of course I would like to move all data (system and users) to that new drive.
Is that possible, can I clone my system to the new drive and then reboot from that new harddrive - or what would be the path to switch drives?
    Thanks.

First use the Disk Utility to "format" the new drive (partition/initialize it).
Then use DiskUtility to Restore the old to the new drive - observe: without erasing the new bigger newly "formatted" drive.
If you boot from another drive (DVD server install for example) for the whole process, the copy can go faster (block copy is used instead of file copy).
(If using file copy I understand why you shouldn't erase the new drive but for block copy the Restore must also grow the volume to the new drive size.)
I tried splitting up a RAID 1 set in a Xserve, mounted 2 new larger drives in the 2 now remaining drive slots, mirrored those and tried to Restore from the now degraded first RAID to the new one but it failed approximatly when it reach the size of the old RAID volume.
For the second machine I first had a spare single drive in the third slot Restored to it from the mirrored drive using the method above (didn't boot from another volume because I hadn't any graphics adapter in the second server). I then mirrored two new drive and restored from the single disk to the mirrored volume - all went well and much faster than the first server.

  • Two Drive Raid 0 vs.  Two Drives for Media

I understand that for scratch disks you want the fastest and largest drive, so raid 0 would probably be great for a scratch disc.
How about two media disks at 7200rpm rather than raid 0 of the same two drives?  Two things to consider reliability and speed.   The idea is to duplicate the footage to both drives and import both as separate bins into premiere and on the timeline go back and forth between the two drive to not stress a single drive.  Is this a good possibility or better to put them into raid 0.
    Lets look at these possibilities:
    1.     2 sata drives in raid 0 (for media, including audio/music and  animations/motion graphics)
    2.     2 sata drives in raid 0,  and a 3rd drive for audio and motion graphics.
    3.     2 sata drives for media (no raid), a  3rd for audio and motion graphics

The idea is to duplicate the footage to both drives and import both as separate bins into premiere and on the timeline go back and forth between the two drive to not stress a single drive.  Is this a good possibility or better to put them into raid 0.
Using disks individually is half the performance at double the headache (of managing the media spread over two drive letters), with one possible benefit of a lesser chance of a full data loss. I'd vouch for RAID0 as long as there is a copy of the source files somewhere else.

Buy another hard drive.  They're cheap these days.
In fact, buy a couple of 'em.  I recommend a minimum of five internal hard drives.

I just purchased the Mac Mini Server with the intention of replacing Lion Server with Lion for the first hard drive while installing Windows 7 thru Bootcamp on the second hard drive. Is it possible for me to do this? Thanks.

I would use Parallels or VMWare and use the second drive to hold the virtual machine. That way the VM only uses the space that it needs and you can still use the remainder of the drive for other things, not to mention that you would not need to reboot to run windows.
Also Time Machine does not back up a boot camp partition.

I bought at Media Market the CD for installing Photoshop Elements 13 and Premiere Elements 13 but I have no disc drive. Is it possible to install and register it online?

I was in the same boat as you, so I went to Best Buy and purchased the box (on sale, by the way). I then downloaded the trials separately for Photoshop Elements and Premiere Elements from the Adobe product site.
In the box you should have been given 2 discs (one for Photoshop Elements (PS) and one for Premiere Elements (PE)) and something called a "redemption code" on a square of colorful cardboard with instructions on how to get your serial keys for installation. The single redemption code is NOT the serial/product key you use to install your purchase. Once you follow the instructions on this card you will be shown two serial/product codes, one each for PE and PS. Write them down, print them, whatever, you will need them during installation.
Now go to the downloaded trial file(s) and run the installer, either for PE first or PS, it makes no difference. During the installation you will be asked if you want to start a trial or use a serial/product code. Choose "I have a code". Enter the product key and you will be golden. Repeat for the other program.
    Hope this helps!

  • Best external hard drive/RAID drive for weddings and events

    Hello,
With all the drive possibilities out there, what would be the best, most reliable, and cost effective external hard drive/RAID drive to purchase for weddings/events and other videos on a single computer system?
    Thanks,
    Jordan

Did read your other posts and agree with them.
As we all know, it will depend on the amount of footage and resolution as to how much needs to be transported around. Given that its DV or HDV and I'm guessing only a few hours of fottage then there are a few 2 drive esata boxes about which are as portable as some lacie/gtech drives.
    www.caldigit.com/S2VRDuo.asp
or one of the new GTech drives that have a sata port as well as fw could be good.
Re the 2 bus issue, I would be delighted to be wrong about it. It is through the Avid tech support that I got this info. Todate, I have not been able to get my avid mojo to work on a Lacie PCMCIA FW card at the same time as I have FW drives attached. This seems to sugest that they are not 2 busses, to an avid at least.
Thats why, for portable editing, I am moving towards a macbook pro with esata card for storage and fw free for other uses.

Have a MacBook Pro running Lion (10.7.9) and an IMac running Snow Leopard (10.6.8). Want to Back up both images and restore on opposite machines. Essentially swapping images between hard drives. Is this possible and any "gotcha's" to look for? Thanks

If the MBP came with Lion, it most likely won't boot with SL. Easiest thing to do is create a bootable backup/clone of each to an ext HD, partitioned to hold each on a separate volume, ensure that the original machines can boot with their respective clones, and finally, try booting the other machine with the other clone. Images are useless since you can't boot with them to test them out.

    Not with iPhoto.
You can relocate the masters using Aperture if you're using the latest versions of both iPhoto and Aperture. However, if you're planning on using iPhoto going forward having the masters on one disk and the Library on another is not a good idea. Have a read of this

I want to burn a song from my itunes onto my flash drive. Is it possible?

By the way, the technical term is "copy", not "burn".  Burning involves using a laser to induce a chemical change on an optical disc such as a DVD or CD.

  • Manual setting change on Tektronix 3014 Phosper Oscilloscope when it is control by Labview IVI driver. Is it possible?

In my labview test program, I would like to allow manual setting change on Oscilloscope like moving cursor position but other part is still controlled by IVI instrumental driver. Is this possible. I found the oscilloscope is locked once it is controlled by labview and don't allow any setting on the scope front panel unless I power off and then power on the scope.

There is a GPIB command called "Unlock" that will unlock the front panel (see page 2-32 of the programmers manual). You will need to send this using a Visa function call since it is not supported by IVI. Unlocking the front panel may cause problems if you are using IVI state caching because if settings are changed (other than cursors) the state cache will be out of synch with the actual settings. So, I suggest you disable state caching using MAX. This will degrade performance somewhat. I also suggest you lock the front panel again ("Lock" command) after the manual settings.

  • If I set my iMac not to sleep, but set hard drives to sleep when possible will they sleep?

If I set my iMac to never sleep, but my Hard Drives to sleep when possible why don't they sleep?

They don't sleep because your Mac is using them (as your Mac is turned on). If they go to sleep, you may damage the external drives because your Mac doesn't unmount the drives first

  • Can't search external drives (RAID, FW), can't eject

    Hello,
I'm posting a link to my original post because i'm having a lot of trouble figuring this out, and perhaps someone here has some thoughts. ANY help would be appreciated.
Brief overview: i cannot do a search on any of my external drives - RAID, FW, or USB - which makes for a very inefficient workflow. From what i've been able to figure out so far, it seems like it's an issue with Spotlight trying (but failing) to index the drives, which runs me into the other problem: when trying to eject any of these drives, i get the "this drive is in use and cannot be ejected. Try quitting apps and trying again" even if none of them are in use.
I tried the Spotlight/Privacy add-then-delete option and get an error saying i "cannot add this drive because of an unknown error". I tried to force indexing with an app called Highlight. I Repaired permissions. I did a clean erase & install. LaCie tech support wasn't any help. No dice for any of these.
    Running OS 10.5.8, PPC G5

thank you very much for any help
    Gardy

Sounds like a corrupted OS install then, or you need to trash the preferences for spotlight. I've no idea how to do that, but might fix it if you've not selected these externals to not be searched with spotlight.

  • XServe with 3 x 500Gb Drives - RAID 5 Possible ?

    Hi Guys,
My supplier is telling me we can chuck 3 x 500Gb drives into a standard dual processor Xserve and then raid 5 them like we usually do on our larger raids with 6 or so disks.
I have a feeling this is not possible normally. On the website it says - "AppleRAID software RAID supports RAID 0 and 1 with online rebuilding; optional PCI hardware RAID controller"
I take it I will need the "optional PCI hardware RAID controller" ??? to acheive raid 5 ?
I'll do a bit more looking around and see if I can find the answer but if anyone knows...
    Regards
    Mitch

Not sure about the performance increase but I would say yes, as we'll be using a Hardware raid card to talk to the drives.
The Mirroring you've done is a software "raid". I have done it this way before with our other Xserves with 2 drives but seeing we have the opportunity to do it with the raid card I believe it's the way to go.
If we lose a drive the others take over seemlessly (Ihope!)
Others here who already have their Xsrvs doing this will post I hope to back me up or let us both know the correct answer. I am still waiting for the money to order mine !
