2 DV Cameras on same firewire card.

The computer I was using for our broadcast did not have any Firewire ports, so I added a 3 port Firewire card. When I have 2 DV cameras hooked up to it VC3 will only recognize one and the other will be black.
Would it be better practice to use separate Firewire cards for each camera? Does anyone else have any problems running multiple DV Camcorders through Firewire?

Thanks for the reply. Just a follow up, I added a second Firewire card and all is well. No problems using to DV Camcorders now.

  • VIA VT6306 Firewire card

I've just installed a PCI USB2.0/Firewire card (specified on the box as being Mac OS X compatible) into my G4 dual 1GHz MDD . It runs the VIA VT6306 chip. I installed the drivers and the USB ports work perfectly, but the FW ones don't. Apparently they're supposed to run using the native Apple FW drivers, and indeed System Profiler shows the PCI card as being installed with 3 USB buses and one FW400 bus. But none of my peripherals (DV camera, iPod, scanner, hard drive or audio interface) will work using these ports. They are currently all hooked up via a hub to one of the on-board FW ports, as the other one has failed, hence the purchase of the new PCI card.
I've searched the web for information, but apart from someone else with the same problem, there's no fix given. Can anyone help?

HI, jumie. What you propose may work fine. Go ahead and clone your internal drive to an external drive, then give your plan a try. In the worst case, the computer will simply ignore the external drive and boot to the internal drive instead. No harm will be done.
Or could I just boot the computer with an external HD using the TiBook's own FireWire port and then run the audio through the PCMCIA-slot via FireWire?
This is a pretty safe bet. It's certainly possible to boot a Tibook to an external FW drive connected through the built-in FW port, unless you're unlucky enough to have bought a non-bootable external drive enclosure (there still are some). In that case you'll probably want to buy a different enclosure for your external drive — making sure the new enclosure uses an Oxford 911 FireWire bridge, which will ensure that it's bootable.
Assuming your drive is bootable, the next question will be whether your audio hardware runs OK through the PC-card FW adapter. If it does, you should be set.
It is not possible to boot any Mac running OS 9 or OS X from any USB device. So don't bother to try booting from a USB drive, or from a combination FW & USB drive through a USB connection.

  • Why do i need a firewire card?

Thanks for the patience on this question. I just purchased a dual core powermac for final cut studio apps. Was told that gettting an external firewire 800 HD would suffice for capturing, that it could be connected directly to the firewire 800 port. But, elsewhere I was cautioned to get a firewire card to avoid single bus issues. Question: Do I really need a firewire card? If so, what is a single bus issue?
    thanks!

    Hi!
you could run into a slowdown due to the single bus
    having to share both devices.
So, is this where dropped frames occur?
Yes, it's one area. Another is too many processes going on (say, formatting a disk, burning a DVD, playing music, and compiling a program at the same time -- while you're trying to import video
It depends on what kind of device -- and what kind of video -- you're importing; I very seldom have a problem with dropped frames on my dual-core.
In your case, why wouldn't it be better just to
capture with your built-in Firewire? I may be
confused, so correct me if so, but then it seems you
are not getting the benefits of a Firewire card?
That is, if the issue is a slowdown, which you seem
    to be experiencing already.
Not necessarily. I'm still getting about 2/3 of the speed of FW800, which is faster transfer rates than FW400 (the larger FireWire connector). And I imported video using FW400 for years.
And of course having two separate FireWire busses -- even if one is operating at only 2/3 speed -- is still a lot more bandwidth than one bus alone.
Look at it this way: I can import from my camera at 2/3 maximum FireWire 800 speed on my expansion card's FW800 port, and simultaneously write the data to disk (around that same throughput) to my hard drive via the built-in FW800 port.
If I didn't have the card, I'd be doing well to get one-half FW800 speeds -- and actually, on a single bus, it would be lower than that.
And now we get to the primary reason I got the internal card: I do a lot of hot-plugging, since we back up to semi-portable hard disks each night. If I'm going to blow a FireWire port because of a bad cable -- or the FireWire gods should otherwise frown on me -- I'd rather blow a port on a $90 card than take down the FireWire on my shiny new G5.

  • Cannot use Firewire Card on 10.2.8 OSX Wallstreet G3

I recently upgraded my G3 Wallstreet to 10.2.8. It currently has a minimal set of applications and I added Firefox which seems to run fine. Internet connectivity is great!
I bought and Adaptec AFW-1430A Firewire for Notebooks PCMCIA card. It came with a CD which just has OS 9 installer and extensions.
The card is recognized by the PB but the menubar icon drop down shows it as 'Unknown Vendor' (grayed out) and 'Firewire Controller' grayed out. The only option is 'Eject Card', which works fine.
I contacted their tech support which told me that the drivers for the card should be in OSX.
How can I figure that out?
Also, someone they asked me what my boot ROM is. System profiler doesn't show a boot room ID.

    footie,
I have a cheap FireWire card and it is not be recognized by the Wallstreet in 9.x unless the card is present and I restart. At this point, my FireWire HD is hot-swappable; I can mount/unmount it as long as the FireWire card is not removed...then I have to restart to get the card mounted.
The same card has no issues in 10.x, meaning the FireWire PC card itself is hot-swappable. However, perform a restart to cover all bases.
If you are working in OSX and the HD is not mounting...
    - Do you have the Finder Preferences set so HDs appear on the desktop? If not, the FW HD should still appear in a Finder window.
    - Is this a known-good HD?
    - Are you using the correct and known-good FireWire cable?
    - With the FW HD connected, open your System Profiler and see if the HD is reported.
    - Launch your Disk Utility in the Utilities folder. Does the HD appear in the left column?
    - If you have installed the extensions for FireWire in 9.x, see if the FW HD will mount. These are the three necessary extensions:
    FireWire Enabler
    FireWire Support
    FireWire CardBus Enabler
Once they are installed and you have restarted, check your Extensions Manager to make sure they are enabled (they should be default).

  • 440 MX VTD and firewire card

I have just installed and MX 440 VTD 8X AGP, which includes the video capture.  Previously, I was only able to capture video from my DV camcorder using my firewire card.  I got the new MSI card so that I could capture old videos from our older camcorder.  Since I installed the new card, none of the video programs recognizes the camcorder when it is attached to the firewire port.  I have an external hard drive that also runs off the firewire card and that is working okay.  Is it possible that the video capture drivers that came with the MSI card are causing a problem with connecting the camera to the firewire port? Any suggestions would be appreciated.
I am running Windows Me and have a Duron 750 MHz processor and 384 Mb RAM.  The new MSI card has 64 Mb RAM.

Is this a conflict in the system information report?
They always have the same address, it's not a problem and there is nothing to fix.

  • Firewire card or adapter for g7 1237dx

I have a G7-1237dx. Can I get a firewire card or adapter to allow me to run pro tools? Need a 6pin firewire solution.
    thanks
    Steve

If the "dual mirror" Power Mac G4 is the model immediately before the last one with FireWire 800, then it has FireWire 400. You need an cable like this one with FireWire 400 (6-pin) on one end and FireWire 800 (9-pin) on the other end
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Newer%20Technology/1394B96036/
Will also be moving data from a Lacie d2 external hard drive to the imac
Again, it depends on the type of connector it has. If it has FireWire 400, then that same cable will work. If it has FireWire 800, the you need a regular FireWire 800 cable with a 9-pin connector at both ends.

  • Does Lightroom 5 (CC) support tethering for a Nikon D1x with a Firewire Card on Windows 7?

Our company wants to use an older, but fully functional, Nikon D1x and tether it to a Windows 7 Workstation with Adobe CC and a FireWire card installed. Will Lightroom 5 recognize the camera and allow us to manage workflow in a tethered setup, complete with photo taking and instant importing?
    Thank you,
    Jim

    Hi Hal,
    Thanks for your response!
I noticed that this list only shows versions of Lightroom 3 and above. Would a D1x have found compatibility with an older version of Lightroom? If so, might this compatibility be carried forward?
In either case, what third-party applications might you suggest?
    Thanks a lot,

  • Is Final Cut is killing my firewire cards?

I have had a Lacie 800 firewire card for about 10 months and just the other day, it went out on me as I tried to do some digitizing from my video camera. I hadn't used the camera for a few months but had used it numerous times before with no problem. But, after numerous attemps at switching PCI slots, still nothing.
Today I went and bought another card and when I first signed on with two external drives and my camera attached, it seemed to work fine. Then, about 45 minutes into digitizing my FCP froze and when I rebooted, no more fire wire card again.
Anyone else have this problem? I can't keep buying cards obviously at $80 a pop. There are no new changes in my computer so what could cause this?

Could also be a short in either the Firewire cable or one of the two ports.
    During the several weeks/months that you did no Firewire transfers did you;
    1. crimp 2. drop 3. immerse in liquid 4. use as a leash for your dog; your Firewire cable?
It may turn out that you are fortunate to only have lost $80 dollars... it could have been the machine that card is plugged into.

  • Best Firewire card for PC?

Hi Folks. What would all of you suggest as the best PCI Firewire card out there for a PC? Mine only has one port working and I need at the very least 2. So, I will be ordering one pretty soon.
    Any suggestions are appreciated.
    Thanks,

To add a resource to this thread: http://www.firewiredirect.com/store/home.php
I've bought many cards from this source (all sorts of configurations), and they have been a pleasure to deal with. Their prices seem fair, but I usually shop for product specs. and good service, before price.
They offer some configurations, that I do not see from most card mfgrs. and several of these have fit my particular needs perfectly. Ease of ordering in nice, shipping always quick, but I've never had any problems, so I do not know about returns - would guess that they are good, but just have never had to return anything.
I also recommend the FW-800 connections, as does Chuck. If one's BIOS can work with IEEE-1394b, and so can one's peripherals, it is a really fast connection.
One comment on multiple devices on one FW connection: I have had great luck piggybacking (both FW-800 & 400) for HDDs. Though I have never experienced a problem, I do not do this for any camera, A->D converter, or even external DVD burners. OK, I did piggyback an external burner, with no problems once, or twice, but do not do this on a regular basis.
Luckily my workstation has 4 separate FW busses on the MoBo and I use one of the FW-800 cards (from above source) for those 1394b connections. Never a complaint on any from a wide array of peripherals.

  • Firewire card for TouchSmart 610

I am considering buying a TouchSmart 610. I have some hardware that uses firewire. Are there any PCIe firewire cards that can be installed in the TouchSmart to provide a firewire port?
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

Thanks for confirming that. I'm disappointed - I have a video camera with a DV interface that I would not be able to use with a Touchsmart.
Seems like most of the current crop of All-In-One systems are coming without firewire these days. Is that interface dropping off the scene?

  • Firewire card with multiple controllers

    Quick question....
I am looking for a firewire card for connecting 2 cameras.  Will I be able to use a standard PCI-E card or will I need to look for one with one controller per port....  Most share a single controller voer multiple ports.  I've had problems int eh past with multiple ports on one card, but this may have been a PCI card with limited system bandwidth.....
    Ideas anyone?
The cameras will be most likely 1280x1024 RGB cameras with 60FPS.
    Cheers for any help forthcoming.

    RFC 2323 FHE-Compliant

    Nobody, no?
The cameras are actually monochrome, 8-bit not RGB (24-bit) and only go up to 30Hz.....
    I mean theoretically a FW400 card should handle a 1024pixel x 1280pixel x 8bit x 30Hz (314 Mbit/s without overhead) picture no problem but adding a second camera will more than saturate the bus.....
Anyone know of a decent PCI-E FW card which has two ports with a seperate controller for each?  Please?

  • Firewire card and MP

What would you recommend a firewire card for MacPRo?

OK. You will need to find a card that is a PCI/Express. Standard PCI cards will not work. The following have compatible cards:
    SIIG (http://www.siig.com/productlist.asp?catid=14).
    Akumen (http://www.akumen.com/store/home.php?cat=105).
    Firewire Depot (http://fwdepot.com/thestore/default.php/cPath/129).
Of course there may be others, but these three I quickly found on Google.

  • IEEE 1394 Firewire card

Hi I am new to this and would like to know if my laptop has a  IEEE1394 card so I can transfer my pictures from my camcorder. If not is there a way to do this. I have a Presario CQ 70-116EM. Can I use a add on card?

    Here are your official specs:
    specs
No firewire. It is becoming rarer (less common) on laptops. If you had one it would look like this:
Some camcorders can use a memory card and many have a usb port for moving still images to a computer. The firewire is really only needed for capturing full-motion video for purposes of editing. If you must have a firewire port, there does not appear to be a way to add it as I do not see that your computer has an expresscard slot. You do have a cardreader slot so if you can transfer what is on the camera to an SD card you can then move the card to the laptop and transfer files that way. Otherwise look into the possibility for a usb transfer.
