2 external harddrives, one final product?!?!  is it possible?

hi,
i am making a movie and have a lot of footage so i am using two separate external harddrives. both have about 15GB left on them.
i need to combine clips from both external harddrives to put my movie together. i tried copying and pasting clips from one movie to the other, but was told there is not enough space to do this.
HOW CAN I USE CLIPS FROM BOTH DRIVES TO MAKE MY MOVIE? shoudl i export it to quicktime and then import it? will that make it smaller? i have the version of imovie that doesn't let you open two movies at the same time. i do not have quicktime pro, but i do have quicktime.
i would be so grateful to any help you can give. thanks all!

....hmmm...- due to the timecritical behavior of video-editing, iM stores ALL files in one single solid folder/project-package... so, you should have ONE drive (internal/external) which has enough space to store the WHOLE project...
some math: 1h video =~13GB... in case, final media is DVD, max. project length is 2h, plus some... "anything" (clips you don't need, additional music, grafix)... letssay: you need at last 30 - 40 GB for your project....
best practise (in case you don't need to edit transitions/titles etc anymore):
export BOTH projects back to tape.
erase both projects from drives
try to make one drive as "project's drive" => anything you don't need there, push it over to drive II
import material into new iM project, located on drive I...
for sure, you can export selected clips out of a iMproject I and import that into iMproject II... but then you have 100MB in I, 100MB exported somewhere, 100MB finally in project I... means: triples your need of space... :-/
don't forget:
your Mac needs ~5GB free on internal drive, just to be a "happy" Mac; and don't forget, you need 10 - 15GB additionally free to run iDD smoothly....
a crystal clear workflow BEFORE launching a new project is essentiell... I'm too ran into space trouble... basic rule: just import from tape, what you really need... iM projects shouldn't be too large...
helpful?

  • Time Machine formatted my external harddrive to apple specific file system

I agreed to delete all files on my external harddrive to use it for Time Machine
I didnt count on the process to exclude the harddrive from being used on my windows machine
Is there any way I can reformat the harddrive to FAT 32 or NTFS?
I dont want to buy a third party program at almost the same price as a new external hard drive
Preferably I get two partitions on the external harddrive: one compatible with Time Machine and one that I can use to move files between my mac and PC
Is that possible within Mac OS X Leopard?
    Thanks
    Rasmus

TM drive must be formatted mac os extended. what you can do is split the external in two partitions , format one for TM and format the other FAT. you can also format the other partition NTFS (has to be done from windows or with 3rd party software) but then you'll need to install NTFS-3g which makes NTFS drives writable from OS X. there is also NTFS for Mac by paragon but unlike NTFS-3g it's not free and you say you don't want to pay.
also, you need to repartition your drive with GUID partition scheme.
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1964018#5
this will wipe it again so you'll have to restart your TM backups after that.

  • How do i copy files and folders from one external harddrive to another on the iMac?

For some reason when i drag the folder or file that i want to transfer or copy from one external harddrive to another, nothing happens when i drop it on the destination folder or drive. however, when i drag and drop to the desktop or any location on the Imac internal hardrive it works without any issue. The only problem is that i dont want to transfer or copy stuff to the computer. i want to copy it to an external harddrive. please help if your have answers to my question.
    Thanks!

Check the formatting of the external hard drive. To do that, right click on the drive icon and select Get Info. (Or click once on the drive and type command +i ) The pane includes information about the drive format.
The drive should be formatted as Mac OS Extended. If it is not, run Disk Utility (App;ications / Utilities) and format the drive.

  • How do I tell itunes (on a Windows XP PC) to start adding downloaded files to an external drive ? Starting itunes while pressing the shift key and then choosing works only for a MAC, I think. I only need this one final step. All is copied already

How do I tell itunes on a Windows XP PC to start downloading new songs to my external drive ? The whole library has already been moved. I am just one final step away. Everything I`m downloading still lands on C: Relaunching itunes while pressing "shift" and then getting prompted to choose library might work for a Mac, it doesn't for Windows.

In iTunes click on 'Edit', then 'Preferances', Click on the 'Advanced' button, change the entry in the 'iTunes media folder location' to point to your external drive.

The duplication is unnecessary. Exporting creates a duplicate of the file. So now you'll have a duplicate of a duplicate. Exporting is not "working on" a file.
No it's not merging, it's exporting from one to the Finder and into another. No matter what lose something. If you export the Original you leave behind all the work you've done in iPhoto. If you export anything else, you lose the non-destructive editing and the ability to revert to the original. With merging you preserve that work. Yes, you can trash the old Library when you have completed the manoevre but no it's not the same thing as merging.
    This User Tip
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-4921
has details of the options in the Export dialogue. But in brief:
Current gets you the iPhoto Preview, used for sharing via media browsers. It's a jpg, medium quality missing metadata. Original gets the file you imported, unchanged and then you can export different version of the current version at different qualities. If you choose to export anything except the Original you do not get a Raw. There's no such thing as an "edited Raw", and you lose the connection between the original and the exported version. That means you've taken a non-destructive workflow and turned it into a destructive one.
The Tiff will certainly be higher qulaity and less likely to suffer generational loss in future editing but the file sizes are vast, often more than 10 times the size of the jpeg.
Put it this way, it would be cheaper to buy Library Manager than the disk you'll need to contain all the Tiffs. Unless you plan on a lot of editing, I'd go for a high quality jpeg as a reasonable compromise.
    To be clear:
So, I guess my new question is, how can I edit the Raw image and keep it in a RAW format that IPhoto recognizes so that I can reprocess without any loss at a future time, or is it that once you edit a RAW image, then it is no longer a RAW image?
Once you edit a Raw it can no longer be a Raw. End of.

Open Time Machine to the date that you know the iPhoto Library is in the format you want and select and Restore it.

  • HT1751 Question: Is it possible to move just part of my iTunes content (i.e. TV shows) to an external harddrive, keeping the rest of the content in place?  Several seasons of TV shows are taking up 102 GB of space, and I'm completely out of space on my HD

Is it possible to move just part of my iTunes content (i.e., only TV shows), keeping the rest of the Library in place?  I have purchased several seasons of some TV shows, which take up 102 GB on my harddrive, inside my iTunes Media Folder.  I don't want to move my entire Library of music and apps etc to the external harddrive (HD), but I rarely watch the TV shows, so wouldn't mind them being located on an external HD, which I would plug in before trying to watch the shows through iTunes?
    Any advice?
    Thanks!

I don't think you can simultaneously have two libraries open. But you can have your media spread across multiple disk drives. Just change your iTunes preferences such that the option "Copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to library" is not selected. That way, new items can remain on your external drive if that's where you add them from.
The only caution is if you ever add items to your library from some "temporary" location, such as a USB drive. With these preference changes, iTunes would keep the native file on the USB drive, which would possibly lead to you deleting the file and losing the link. So, when you have your preferences to allow you to add new items to iTunes without copying them to the iTunes Music folder, you would want to put the native files in the desired location first, then add to iTunes.
To move existing videos and podcasts to the external drive, you can either do that as you have been (moving the native files and correcting the ! warning), or simply delete them from the library (but keep the native files) then re-add them from their new location on the external drive (you'd lose play history and ratings though, but may not be an issue for videos and podcasts).

I just upgraded from the first Apple tv to the new one. I had a large library of purchased movies that I had stored on an external harddrive. I would manually choice movies I wanted to watch and then sycn to the first ATV as to not waste space on the ATV drive. Now with the new ATV I don't see any of these manual sycn controls plus many movies in the library now seem to be "lost".

  • Unhappy with final product - bringing my questions/issues to one thread

I have been trying to get what I consider an acceptable DVD from my new Mac. I have started a couple of threads and posted in a couple of others, but I figured it was better to bring all my questions/problems to one thread. I'm going to try to give all the information that I can think of, in hopes that yall can help me.
    I have iMovie11, iDVD7.1, Toast 8 Titanium, and Final Cut Express4.0.1.
At this time, the video I'm working with came from a Flip Ultra HD (the 30fps version, not the newer one that does HD at 60fps).
I have edited an 18 minute project, and created numerous versions of it, which I then burned to DVD with Toast. The final product on each disk all look pretty much the same to me, with the one problem that is making me go nuts --- the video playback does not appear "smooth". It looks like it is playing back at less than 30 frames per second.
I don't expect perfect video quality from the Flip camera - actually the video is acceptably clean and sharp (for me) - it's the frame rate thing that is killing me. In the past I have burned numerous DVDs from MiniDV through Sony Vegas that play back perfectly.
As of tonight, I have discovered that I apparently chose the wrong "easy setup" for FCE, it was on DV-NTSC, and I think I have found that it should have been on HDV-Apple Intermediate Codec 720p30 - although I might be wrong about that as well.
I did not do any kind of conversion to the Flip videos before working with them in FCE - don't know if this would be part of my problem.
In my trying various setting for the export, I have found "Key Frames Every xxx" with a default at 24 - don't know what this is or if it is related to my problem.
I don't mind re-editing the entire project if there is something I can do that will make this better, or if this is as good as it is going to get with this source video.
Also - I've noticed that anytime I add or make any changes to a transition, I have to re-render that section. Is this normal, or is it because I'm using video straight from the Flip (without MPEG Streamclip'ing) it first, or some other reason - maybe related to my wrong easy setup choice?
Please let me know if there is other information I can provide that might help you help me. I can see that I will love working with Final Cut Express and playing with all that it can do once I figure out how to set the export settings like they should be.

All the source video is converted, new project started with correct easy setup, corrected clips imported - the video looks awesome in FCE preview.
I notice that it still requires a re-render where titles are added from Live Type - is that normal or did I have something wrong with the items coming from Live Type?
I also exported a short video 2 different ways:
export - quick time movie - self contained.... This one has a very subtle jump just before and after each transition that I don't see in FCE while editing, it's only in the completed version
    and....
    export - using qt conversion
    format - quicktime movie
    options - compression h.264
    quality - high
    key frame rate - 24
    frame reordering - yes
    encoding mode - multi-pass
    dimensions - compressor native 1280x720
This one does not have the jump before and after transitions, but from what I read earlier in this thread, I should be able to just use the "export - qt movie - self contained" - correct?

  • Is it possible to connect and external Harddrive via ethernet?

I have an external Harddrive and the USB port on it has stopped working. It has an Ethernet which I have tried plugging into then onto my mac. It says it is conected but I can't access the Harddrive. Is it possible to do this?

I don't think that is possible the hard drive is designed to be part of a network.  You should try plugging it into a router.

  • Use one external harddrive on both pc and mac at the same time

i bought an iomega external harddrive today
can i use it on both mac and pc at the same times?
    for ex:
when i plug in both computer
i could able to read and write on the hdd on both computer
since i format it into 4 partitions (2 journal and 2 doc)
so i wish i can use them separately in 2 computers

Hi Jerry_L and welocme to Discussions,
using such USB or Firewire connected external harddrives with two computers at the same time is usually not recommended by the manufacturer.
Doing so might lead to data-loss and the like.
Check with the manual of that harddisk to verify.
Using it with one computer at a time with your partitioning should be doable.
    Regards
    Stefan

  • If Adobe has disabled the ability to use Lightroom 5.7 to view the images in the external harddrive, how does one view the images in the file on the external drive without bringing them back to the Lightroom Library?

Jpeg images dragged over from Photoshop are veiwable as thumbnails on the external harddrive.  However images brought over as RAW of DNG are not viewable.  Is there anyway to view these type images on the external harddrive?  It would be nice to have a glimpse of what you are bringing into Lightroom by just looking on the external harddrive as you can with the jpegs.

From the Library simply click the import button and navigate to your folder on the ehd. Choose the folder and click Add at the top of the dialog. You should see thumbnail previews in the import dialog where you can select what to import.

  • MacBook White - Possible to reload OSX from an external harddrive?

Ok heres the problem, I own a MacBook White (late 2006) my harddrive and optical drive have failed, I have replaced my harddrive but I'm currently in a pickle with the optical drive (im a university student and funds and time are not on my side).
My Question is can I copy the OSX Install disk onto an external harddrive and boot/install from that? If so how can this be done?
thanks for any help and advice received.
    Jay.

Thanks for the reply, I'll be using a PC with windows XP to create the partition and disk image...
I assume this will work fine? also from what I can see on that page I will only need to partition 4gb of the Harddrive for Tiger...
So again assume I could use a flashdrive with the required space.
    Thanks again for the advice

  • Applying password to an external HardDrive - possible?

    Hi
I use a Lacie 250 external HardDrive to backup my files and such. Is there anyway I can apply a password to this drive so that when I plug it to a computer I have to enter a password before I can access the files?
I have turned off the auto log-on on my MacBook and would like to be able to protect my files on the external drive as well.
    Mikkel

    Hi Mikkel,
You could create a password protected disk image on your external hard drive. This would require you to enter a password before accessing the files. I believe there is another thread floating around telling you how to do this.
    Good luck,
    Jason
