2 fast Ministack questions

For those who have/know...
Is a ministack usable JUST as a hub WITHOUT a HD?
When connected ONLY via Firewire do you get all the speed benefits of USB2.0, even if the original machine in only FW and USB1.1??
(I want to add USB2 to a Pismo and a 1gHz eMac)
Thanks!
W.

There are options that have the ministack look that are only Fire Wire or USB ports and not hard drives. Not to sure what you want or mean after that... if your mac does not have USB2 then adding a port extension with USB2 will force it to work at USB1 speed. From my limited experience with my Mac mini it seems that FW works best, way faster then USB 1 or 2. Hope this helped... good luck...

  • Interleaving to Fast Path Question

    Hi,
    After recently getting my broadband line issues sorted, I am still experiencing consistant Lag issues while online Gaming on Xbox live.
    After reading up at great length on the internet about other peoples issues, it seems that Interleaving is a main factor in playing Call of Duty Games especially. My question is though would I be able to switch to fast path?

    that is showing that interleaving is working personally unless you really must have interleaving turned off i would leave it on as it improves stability going to fast path could make your line unstable if you want to go to fast path you need to contact the forum mods this is a link to them and ask them to turn off interleaving

  • Front Row playing shared TV video and using Fast-Forward question

    I'm playing a shared TV video on my Black MacBook from my iTunes running on my PowerMac G5 across my home ethernet 10/100/1000 network. The TV video plays just fine and I can pause it using the Remote just fine. However, according to the documentation for the Remote while using Front Row in this manner, the Remote's Fast-forward is supposed to fast-forward the video if it's pressed and held down. It does not do this! It simply shows the progress bar for the video with played time on left and remaining time on right. I held the button down for at least 30 secs but to no avail. I let up on the button and press and held down for another 30 secs or so but it still would not fast-forward as the documention says it should.
    My MacBook is updated with all the latest Apple software downloads for MacBook.
    Have others experienced this problem, and if so is there a soln to this at this time or does one simply wait for Apple to fix it.
    I will be sending feedback to Apple on this issue.
    Thanks for any insights in advance.

    Update...
    I left Front Row paused on a shared TV Video all night. In morning time screen was black and I could not resume playback.
    I backed out all the way to Desktop and restarted Front Row and selected same shared TV Video - and this time the fast-forward button worked as documented. Go figure this one
    However, when I tried several Shared TV Videos I only got audio in some cases and when I did get a video feed it was not moving yet audio kept rolling along. I had to back off to the Desktop several times and restart Front Row to get things working correctly. If you enecounter this just do what I did here and you'll get things going - just don't give up on it, is my advice. :-))
    This raised another issue - It appears that pause/play Remote button will not work (at least for me) after extended pause time (like for 8 hrs).
    Apple has some fine tuning to do on this Front Row feature - although I will add they've done a pretty darn good job with its initial release IMO.

  • MPLS TE Fast-Reroute question?

    Hi:
    I am trying to configure the mpls te fast-reroute command but the router complains!!
    I am running 12.4 Enterprise on a 3640.
    Does this only work on a 7200 and up?
    Thanks.

    Niraj,
    The 3640 doesn't support FRR. It does support traffic engineering but can not be used as the Point of Local Repair (PLR) router, which is the router where the backup tunnel is configured.
    Hope this helps,

  • Need help fast :a question about jcomponent and jscrollpane

    I draw a graphic on a jcomponent like this :
    class drawrecttree extends JComponent {
    public void paint( Graphics g) {
    and I add this to jscrollpane:
    drawrecttree www=new drawrecttree();
    www.k_choose=k_valuenow;
    www.node=currentNode;
    www.setAutoscrolls(true);
    jScrollPane2.setViewportView(www);
    but I hope the jscrollpane can autoscroll,that means jscrollpane's size is 400*400,if the Jcomponent's size is 200*300, just add jcomponent;if jcomponent is bigger than 400*400,the jscrollpane can autoscroll,how can I do that?

    Below is a small non-compilable unit (you need to add a few things of course) - but at any rate, here is some code that, if you get it working, you will see that the scrollbars do the right thing.
    public class TestScrollPane  extends JFrame {
      private Container     container;
      private JPanel        panel;
      private JLabel        label;
      private JScrollPane   scroller;
      public TestScrollPane() {
        container = getContentPane();
        panel     = new JPanel();
        panel.setLayout(new BorderLayout());
        /* Get you images here ...                */
        /* I will call them imageOne and imageTwo */
        label     = new JLabel(new ImageIcon(imageOne));
        panel.add(label);
        scroller  = new JScrollPane(panel);
        scroller.setPreferredSize(new Dimension(100, 100));
        container.add(scroller);
        pack();
        /* Rest of JFrame stuff */
      public static void main(String[] argv)  throws InterruptedException {
        TestScrollPane tsp = new TestScrollPane();
        Thread.sleep(5000);
        tsp.label.setIcon(new ImageIcon(tsp.imageTwo));
        Thread.sleep(5000);
        tsp.label.setIcon(new ImageIcon(tsp.imageOne));
    }

  • Adding a RAID card to help speed up export (and other drive question) in Premiere Pro CC

    First of all, I have read Tweakers Page exporting section because that is where my primary concern is. First my questions, then background and my current and proposed configurations:
    Question 1: Will adding a hardware RAID controller, such as an LSI MegaRAID remove enough burden from the CPU managing parity on my software RAID 5 that the CPU will jump for joy and export faster?
    Question 2: If true to above, then compare thoughts on adding more smaller SSDs for either a one volume RAID 0 or smaller two volume RAID 0 to complement existing HDD RAID 5. That is, I'm thinking of buying four Samsung 850 Pro 128 GB SSDs to put in a four disk volume to handle everything (media/projects, media cache, previews, exports), or split it up into two volumes of two disks each and split the duties, or keep the four disk volume idea and put the previews & exports on my HDD RAID 5 array.
    The 850's are rated at SEQ read/write: 550/470 MB/s thus I could get around 2000/1500 MB/s read write in a four disk RAID 0 or 1/2 that if I split into two volumes to minimize volumes from reading/writing at the same time, if that really matters with these SSDs?
    The Tweaker's page made a few comments. One is splitting duties among different disks, rather than a large efficient RAID may actually slow things down. Since the SSDs are much faster than a single HDD, I'm thinking that is no longer accurate, thus I'm leaning toward the Four disk configuration putting OS & Programs on C drive, Media & Projects on D (HDD RAID 5), Pagefile & Media Cache on SSD (2-disk RAID 0) and Previews &Exports on 2nd SSD RAID 0 (or combine the two RAID 0's and their duties).
    Just trying to get a perspective here, since I haven't purchased anything yet. Any experience/stories, I would appreciate.
    My current drive configuration:
    My D drive is software RAID 5 consisting of four 1 TB Western Digital RE4 (RED) 7200 RPM HDDs with a CrystalDiskMark SEQ Read/Write of 339/252 MB/s.
    The C drive is SSD 500 GB (Samsung 840 (not Pro) and does 531/330 MB/s. My OS, Program Files and Page File are on C, and data/media files/project, etc all are on the RAID drive.
    Problem:
    Current setup allows for smooth editing, only the exporting seems slow, often taking between two and two and a half times the video length to export. Thus a 10 minute video takes 20-30 minutes to export. 15 minute video can take 30-40 minutes to export. The first 10% of the two-pass export takes under a minute (seems fast), but it gets slower where the final 10 or 20% can hang for many minutes like my system is running out of steam. So where is the waste?
    I have enabled hardware acceleration (did the GPU hack since my GPU isn't listed) and it may spike at 25% usage a few times and eat up 600 MB of VRAM (I have 2 GB of VRAM), otherwise it is idle the whole export. The CPU may spike at 50% but it doesn't seem overly busy either.
    Our timeline is simple with two video streams and two audio streams (a little music and mostly voice) with simple transitions (jump cuts or cross dissolves). We sometimes fast color correct, so that might use the GPU? Also, since we film in 1080 60P and export 1080 29.97 frames/sec, I think that is scaling and uses the GPU. I know without the GPU, it does take a lot longer. I have ruled out buying a faster GPU since it doesn't appear to be breaking a sweat. I just need to know if my system is bottlenecked at the hard drive level because I'm using software RAID and my disks are slow and will hardware RAID significantly reduce the CPU load so it can export faster.
    Our files are not huge in nature. Most our clips are several MBs each. Total project files are between 5 GBs and 10 GBs for each video with Windows Media File export being 500 MB to 1.2 GB on average. We shoot using Panasonic camcorders so the original files are AVCHD, I believe (.MTS files?).
    Considerations:
    1. I'm thinking of buying (and future proofing) an LSI Logic MegaRAID 9361-8i that is 12Gb/s SAS and SATA (because some current SSDs can exceed the 6Gb/s standard).
    2. I'm not replacing my current RAID 5 HDDs because not in my budget to upgrade to 6 or more large SSDs. These drives are more important to me for temporary storage because I remove the files once backed up. I don't mind a few inexpensive smaller SSDs if they can make a significant difference for editing and exporting.
    I can only guess my HDD RAID is slow but the CPU is burdened with parity. I would imagine running RAID 10 would not help much.
    My setup:
    my setup:
    CPU - i7-3930K CPU @4.5 GHz
    RAM - G.SKILL Ripjaws Z Series 32GB (4 x 8GB) DDR3 2133 @2000
    Motherboard - ASUS P9X79 WS LGA 2011
    GPU - Gigabyte GeForce GTX 660 OC 2GB (performed the compatibility list hack to enable hardware acceleration).
    C drive - 500 GB Samsung 840 SSD (Windows 7 Pro 64 bit and programs).
    D drive - four 1 TB WD RE4 Enterprise HDDs 7200 RPMs in software RAID 5
    Case - Cooler Master HAF X
    CPU Fan - Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO with 120 mm fan
    Power Supply - Corsair Pro Series AX 850 Watt 80 Plus Gold
    Optical Drive - Pioneer BDR - 208DBK
    thanks in advance,

    ........software RAID 5 off the motherboard ??????......NOT a good idea, from what I have read here on this forum from experts like Harm Millard and others. They have mentioned a LARGE overhead on the CPU doing this....causing sub-par performance. RAID 0 off the motherboard will NOT do this, however.....RAID 0 would provide optimum speed, but, with the risk of total data loss if ANY drive fails. You may wish to reconfigure your RAID to be RAID 0...BUT...you would need to DILIGENTLY back up its entire volume onto perhaps a quality 4TB drive very frequently.
         A lot depends on the nature of your current and FUTURE codecs you plan to edit. You may not want to sink a lot of money into an older setup that may have trouble with more demanding future codecs. For now, in the 1080p realm, your rig should be OK....the read/write performance on your CURRENT RAID 5 setup is not great, and a definite drag on the performance. The rest of your components appear to be fine.....the Samsung SSD, though not ideal, is OK.....it's write speed is WAY lower than the Pro model,but, the drive is used mainly for reading operations. Since you have Windows 7 Pro, and NOT Windows 8.......you CAN put the entire windows page file onto the RAID 0 you might create.....this will take that frequent read/write load OFF the SSD. Read the "tweakers Page" to see how to best TUNE your machine. To use your current setup most efficiently, without investing much money, you would :a. create the RAID 0 off the motherboard, ( putting all media and project files on it )  b. install a quality 7200rpm 4TB HDD to serve as a BACKUP of the RAID array. Then, install a Crucial M550 256GB or larger SSD, ( close in performance to Samsung 850 Pro...much cheaper), to put all previews, cache , and media cache files on....AND to use as " global performance cache" for After Effects...if you use that program. Exporting can be done to ANOTHER Crucial M550 for best speed...or, just to the either the FIRST Crucial or, the 4TB drive. Your current GPU will accelerate exports on any video containing scaling and any GPU accelerated effects. Your CPU is STILL important in SERVING the data to and from the GPU AND for decoding and encoding non-GPU handled video....your high CPU clock speed helps performance there ! You may want to check out possibly overclocking your video card, using MSI Afterburner.or, similar free program. Increasing the "memory clock speed" can RAISE performance and cut export times on GPU effects loaded timelines,or, scaling operations. On my laptop, I export 25% faster doing this. With my NEW  i7 4700 HQ laptop, I export in the range of your CURRENT machine....about 2 to 3 times the length of the original video. PROPERLY SET UP...your desktop machine should BLOW THIS AWAY !!
        Visit the PPBM7 website and test your current setup to possibly identify current bottlenecks,or, performance issues. THEN, RE-TEST it again, after making improvements to your machine to see how it does. Be aware that new codecs are coming (H.265 and HEVC,etc.) which may demand more computer horsepower to edit, as they are even MORE compressed and engineered for "streaming" high quality at a lower bandwidth on the internet. The new Haswell E...with its quad-channel memory, 8 core option, large number of PCI gen. 3 lanes, goes farther in being prepared for 4K and more. Testing by Eric Bowen has shown the newer PPro versions provide MUCH better processing of 4K than older versions.

  • TS1702 Touchscreen stops responding on fast movements

    Hi guys,
    I'm using the latest IPad and I am very happy with the device ) But I noticed a strange behavior: When I'm moving my finger very fast on the screen it sometimes "loses" contact - as if my finger (still on the screen) would not be there on screen anymore. Another touch with the same finger and tadaa, it continues to respond.
    For example: When using a painting app and I move my finger very fast from one side of the screen to another side the line I painted only follows half of the way. Or if I'm moving on the home screen very fast from one side to another the screen suddenly stops and does not react on my finger anymore.
    I already rebooted (sleep + home button), but it changed nothing. And it only happens when moved very fast.
    Question: Is this a normal behavior and based on technical circumstances? Or is my device simply... uhm.... "broken"? Hope someone can help me
    Ama

    Sounds like you have VoiceOver (one of the accessibility features) 'on' - if you turn the volume up do you get a voice saying what you are tapping ? If you do then try triple-clicking the home button and see if that turns it off, and if it does you can then change what a triple-click does via Settings > General > Accessibility > Triple-Click Home.
    If that doesn't turn it off then you can either turn it off directly on the iPad (you need to use a tap-to-select and then double-tap to activate/type process and 3 fingered scrolling) to go into Settings > General > Accessibility and turn VoiceOver 'off', or you can do it by connecting to your computer's iTunes : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4064

  • How much faster is a Xeon proc vs a Core DUO proc?

    I recently purchased a MBP 2.6 after returning a MP 2.8 8 core because i felt 6 of the cores were going to waste and it was all overkill. I edit video , edit photos , you know PS , FC and the works but Im hoping i made the right decision. So far it seems the MBP is right up to par with the MP if only by a difference of a few seconds on certain tasks. Is it true that there are no appz that take advantage of the 8 cores making it useless in the present? I need a powerful workstation for my work and portability weighed my decision , but why would anyone buy a machine that cannot be used to its full potential? So far I have no complaints and I would love some feedback from others in the same situation. THanks.

    Thanks for your input. It is obvious that the MP is faster , my question is just how much, If we are talking about a few seconds that doesn't bother me and so far I haven't seen much a difference at all except in Poser 7 which utilizes more cores. That was to be expected though. Photoshop does NOT yet utilize more than 2 cores and CS4 is rumored to be the same. That is what is most important to me. Space is no issue I have 4 externals a and I drag and drop what i need for that day or week. The portability just outweighs the slight speed decrease by so much in my book. I mean who really wants a desktop box computer in this day and age?

  • 27" cinema display question

    Hi,
    I just got my 27" cinema display and let me tell you that it's absolutely fantastic.
    Using it for everyday applications like safari, mail...can't be more fun but it's when you start Final Cut Pro, motion or other pro applications like photoshop that the real fun begins. That huge real estate make any task using these pro apps much much faster.
    my question now is how or what would be the best way to disconnect my display. don't find any info on the manual! can I just disconnect it from my MBP while everything is on or should I turn my MB off?
    what I'm doing now is just unplugging the screen while everything on but I don't know if that could damage the screen or the MB's VGA!

    can I just disconnect it from my MBP while everything is on
    Yes. The Mini DisplayPort is hot-swappable.

  • Question re: fan replacement & smc fan control

    hi all,
    a few months back, i installed smc fan control and have been using it to run my fans at 6000rpm in an effort to keep my operating temps down (average now is about 115*F).
    so, obviously, running my fans at 6000rpm for what is pretty much a continuous time will wear them down faster. my question:
    will my fans be covered by apple care? i've got a plan valid for 3 years (i've had my MBP for about a year now). should i expect anything to happen to the fans within this timeframe?
    thanks in advance

    Hi blikebecks23,
    When you start up your computer, it's already at 115 or it climbs to that temperature after normal usage? Personally, that's pretty normal operating temperature for these machines. I went to instal SMC Fan Control prior to responding and with my machine "idle" and having a few tabs open in Safari I'm sitting at 117 degrees and the fans at idle of about 2000rpm.
    With that being said, I really don't see the need to run the 3rd party application, the built-in temperature monitoring logic for the machine is adequate enough to properly cool the unit.

  • Wireless printing to HP CM1017 very slow

    Hi, I need some help please.
    Printers: HP Color Laserjet CM1017 and HP 5100 connected to Win 7 (32Bit)Server via USB.
    Problem: When printing pdf docs directly form the server, the "progress" (Adobe preparing the docs to print) is quick(seconds) but, when printing from any workstation(connection by WiFi to the server) it takes a very long time (about 5 mins)to "prepare" print. When printing from any workstation to the HP 5100, the "progress" speed is good(seconds).
    The same docs print "progress" is fast(seconds) to another printer (HP C6183), not connected to the server but, direct wireless.
    So, to sum up.
    1. the document is not the problem(does same with other docs)
    2. the Adobe Reader is not the problem(tried different versions)
    3. the workstation is not the problem, as it does the same on all with different Adobe versions and O/S's.
    4. the "progress"(preparation for printing) is fast when printing from server connected directly via USB
    5. printing to the HP5100 from a workstation, uses the same route(WiFi to Server, Server via USB to Printer) and the "progress" is fast.
    Question: Why is the print "progress" so slow when using the same route, but to another printer on the same server?

    Hi Bluechip123,
    try to check your printing preferences. if Quality of print is set as 'BEST', printer becomes too slow when printing documents.

  • Urgent java problems

    Ok here's my situation... I'm having to catch up in my software development class at university, missed a few lessons so now I'm finding it incredibly difficult.
    I'm working through a bluej book 'Objects First with Java' and as much as I'd like to sit and work each question out, it is taking me far too long and I'm not gonna manage so this will probably be the first post of many.
    So here's where I am
    (pg. 110, ex. 4.28)
    It's a simple auction program that lets you create a bidder, a lot(something to bid on), an auction and of course the ability to bid.
    What I'm being asked...
    Add a close method to the Auction class. This should iterate over the collection of lots and print out details of all the lots. You can use either a for-each loop or a while loop. Any lot that has had at least one bid for it is considered to be sold. For lots that have been sold, the details should include the name of the successful bidder, and the value of the winning bid. For lots that have not been sold, print a message that indicates this fact.

    import java.util.Iterator;

    }I know my 'close' method is a bit shoddy and doesn't utilise the iterator yet but I tested it and it compiled ok but nothing happened :/
    Is the for-each loop a wise move? Ideas would be greatly appreciated! I tried a while loop first but wasn't really getting anywhere. One of my many problems in this is that I don't really understand where the methods I'm calling from are coming from either, I really don't have a good base understanding of the language :( for instance lots.toString() where does the .toString come from, thats an arraylist method then yeah?
    I am feeling that the book is going pretty fast, some questions are fairly simple then suddenly I feel like it's never even taught me enough to even work a question out on my own - obviously just starting out at programming though so it may be completely obvious but if you don't know it you don't know it :/
    Anyway folks I hope you can help as, like I said, it's pretty important to me and I don't know how the forum works but if I'm the one that will have the power to award the points for an answer then I will deal them out appropriately.
    Cheers

    Wow what a nice introduction to the forum.
    My time management skills are good, thanks for the advice though. We must have a different notion of what the word "good" means...
    But how can I be 'all high an mighty' It sounded like you were doing us a favor by handing out some forum/duke points/stars while you are the one looking for help.
    when I said I don't know how the forum works, sounds like you've got a complex man, was just trying to let peeps know I was going to be fair.Wow, your assessment of my psychic state is impressive! By studying your two posts here, I conclude you're a lazy twit.
    I do apologise however, I wrote this after 3 hours of studying and my stress must have transferred into the post.Then study some more!
    To the point: "I tested it and it compiled ok but nothing happened :/ " - I just wanted to know where I had gone wrong in the close method as I expected it to print out a lot that doesn't have a bid on it.
    I have worked through the book at a steady pace, I simply don't have the luxury to sit and work out where I had gone wrong in each question, sorry if I misled you into thinking I expected you to do it for me, these aren't necessary questions for me to do, they're just giving me a good grounding for my project which has to be handed in on the 5th of December. Trying to speed my workrate up by getting advice on my shoddy code.
    Hope someone can helpI still don't see a specific question.

  • Can't remove MovieClip

    Hello
    I'm having lots of trouble removing a MovieClip that was created using createEmptyMovieClip. I've tried everything, unloadMovie, removeMovieClip with various varations (I've checked the references and the variables are well defined), the movieclip will just not go away!
    Inside this MovieClip there are several other movieclips with associated classes and objects spawned from there, does this matter?
    Does anyone have any idea about why is it so difficult to just remove a MovieClip?
    Thanks a lot again, this forum has been really usefull, I'm trying to be helpfull too, but you're just too fast answering questions I'll be here more often from now on

    swapdepths worked! That's realy odd because it's the only movieclip in its parent and it was already created with getHighestDepth... anyway, thanks for your help!

  • Resouce Bundles v/s Database Access

    I am planning to make a .jsp which does an opinion poll in five different langauges. I want to make avail internationalization feature to it. I am employing five translators for the same question. Where should I store the questions for better performance(both memory and speed)?. In resource bundle or in database?. Will resouce bundle (list) for each language be able supply me fast the questions compared to access it from database based on a query. Have any body done some thing similar?. Is there any other options to solve this problem?

    Well, entirely depends on load and resources in your application. If the number of questions is not huge, I think storing in files and reading into memory at appserver start up time makes sense. If there can be tons of questions then storing in the database would be the choice. Again for improving performance there are lots of mechanisms employed including caching, heuristics etc. You don't want to go to the database each and every single time. When you talk about unicode storing and retrieving from database could be expensive.

  • Should we be using RAC for a data warehouse?

    We have an Oracle 11.1 data warehouse system. We were having some performance issues with the system so we shutdown one of the RAC nodes, to see if that was causing the problem. The problem was slow updates on a table (all 30+ million rows on one table had to be fixed). One other perforamnce problem is queries of large partitoned tables (even if the partitioin key is used). Both bulk collect and bulk inserts are very fast.
    Question: for a 11.1 data warehouse system should we use RAC? Why?
    Thank you...

    a school of thought that suggests RAC potentially decreases system availability, rather than increasing it.RAC also has the potential of increasing availability. The potential "cuts both ways", so to speak.
    I've worked with non-RAC and RAC databases on a variety of platforms. My experience doesn't show evidence that RAC decreases availability. Given that most servers, even in non-HA clusters, are very reliable (generally), downtime is low in both non-RAC and RAC environments. However, RAC does provide an availability advantage -- protection against node outage. And there are environments which do require the avaialability of RAC. Not all applications require it. RAC is too oversold, not in terms of advantages but in terms of installations.
    the increased complexity and the increased risk of both software and human related errors in a RAC environmentI would say that a similar argument arises in DASD v SAN. A SAN is more complex. Human error on a SAN causes a much higher cost. Human error does occur on a SAN. However, no one rejects a SAN on these grounds alone.
    RAC is complex to implement. It requires more skills to adminster and diagnose. However, if it is setup well, it doesn't suffer outages. An outage from human error is the same as in a non-RAC environment.
    The issue isn't RAC. The issue is that too many customers buy RAC without evaluating seriously whether
    a. they need the additional minute increase in availability
    b. whether there applications are "RAC-aware" {TAF is still misunderstood}
    c. whether they have the skills
    RAC provides scalability. It also provides HA. Let me say that again : It also provides HA.
    I've seen a high end Failover Cluster environment where one of the "best" vendors in the world talked of a 10-30minute outage for the Failover.
