2 Host 1 HBA

Hi All,
we have one HBA card and 2 Host (A5200). How can we make a loop from these things (without a switch)? I didn't find any docs (about exactly our problem).
Can anybody help me?
Thank you
J

You've always got a loop. To extend the loop to the second array, just make sure the first array has 2 GBICs, then wire it to the second array.
CARD /gbic -------- gbic1/array/gbic2 -------- gbic1/array
It gets more complex because you can have dual loops in the array, with dual ports....
For docs, I'd start here:
http://www.sun.com/products-n-solutions/hardware/docs/Network_Storage_Solutions/data_center_storage/a5000/index.html
I believe the 5200 is configured the same way as the 5000.

  • How to obtain target WWN for a LUN On Windows 2012 R2 Hyper-V with Fibre Channel SAN

    I have a large collection of Hyper-V hosts for which I would like to retrieve the target WNN and LUN ID for the LUNs visible on each host.  By target WWN I mean the storage array's WWN.
    I have tried using the root\wmi namespace to retrieve MS_SMHBA_PORT_LUN instances, but I get 0 instances back.
    I get instances of MSFC_FibrePortHBAAttributes back, but those only tell me the local host's HBA WWN, not the target information.
    This information must be stored somewhere, because you can't access the LUN without it, I hope there is a way to retrieve it.  Is there?  Or is it write only during LUN setup?

    Hi,
    Have you checked these two postings:
    http://terrytlslau.tls1.cc/2011/08/how-to-find-world-wide-name-wwn-in.html
    http://pkjayan.wordpress.com/2011/08/17/world-wide-name-wwn-for-a-fibre-channel-hba-on-windows-server/
    You need the FCINFO tool, which you can get from:

  • Urgent please help - brocade zoning and changing WWN

    Hi all, we have had an issue with one of the devices on our SAN network, this means chaning the device, the engineer said we will need to change the name of the World wide name on the brocade to match. My question is, what is the WWN for? and do you assign it to one port, or a number of ports,and does a device that wants to talk to another device need to have the same WWN?
    please help
    cheers
    Carl

    Hi Carl,
    I'm presuming that you are talking about having either a whole server replaced or you replaced a HBA (host bus adapter (fibre channel card in a server)).
    A WWN (World Wide Number) is a unique identifier in the fibre channel space much like a MAC address. WWN's are used for security purposes generally to prevent/allow devices from seeing each other.
    In that case, you will need to reconfigure any zones that were configured for that host/hba. A zone is a method of preventing devices from seeing each other on a fibre channel SAN (its kinda like an ACL).
    You will most likely have to make some changes on any disk arrays because they generally would be configured to only allow certain hosts or HBA's to see certain LUN (Logical Unit (a slab of disk)). This is called LUN masking or sometimes called LUN security.

  • Do we need to create two zones for Two HBA for a host connected with SAN ?

    Hi,While creating Zone , Do we need to create two zones for Two HBA for a host connected with SAN ? Or a zone is enough for
    a host which having Two HBAs...We have two 9124s for our SAN fabric...
    As I found like one zone  below, I little bit confused that , if a host having two HBA connected with SAN, should I expect two zones for every Host?
    from the zone set, I gave the command show zoneset
    zone name SQLSVR-X-NNN_CX4 vsan 1
        pwwn 50:06:NN:NN:NN:NN:NN:NN
        pwwn 50:06:NN:NN:NN:NN:NN:NN
              pwwn 10:00:NN:NN:NN:NN:NN:NN
    But I found only one zone for the server's HBA2:by the same time in the fabric I found switches A & B showing the WWNs of those HBAs on its
    connected N port...Its not only for this server alone, but for all hosts..Can you help me to clarify on this please..that should we need to create one zone for
    one HBA?

    if u have two independent fabrics between hosts and storage, i think the below confs are recommended.
    Scenario 1:  2 HBAs single port each ( redundancy across HBA / Storage port )
    HBA1 - port 0 ---------> Fabric A ----------> Storage port ( FAx/CLx )
    HBA2 - port 0 ---------> Fabirc B ----------> Storage port ( FAy/CLy )
    Scenario 2: 2 HBAs of dual port each
    HBA1 - port 0 -------> Fabric A ---------> Storage port ( FAx/CLx )
    HBA2 - port0 ---------> Fabric A ---------> Storage port ( FAs/CLs )
    HBA1 - port 1 --------> Fabric A --------> Storage port ( FAy/CLy )
    HBA2 - port 1 ---------> Fabric B --------> Storage port ( FAt/CLt )
    the zone which is in your output is VSAN 1. if its a production VSAN, Cisco doesn't recomends to use VSAN 1 ( default vsan ) for production.

    This page mentions that the permissions of /dev/vboxdrvu should be 0666, but that they may erroneously be set to 0600:
    Linux installers: Move the udev rule execution order from 10 to 60. The reason for having it at 10 was to allow other rules to overwrite these rules, mainly permissions of the USB devices. This is not longer necessary (we are using /dev/vboxusb for a long time now) and we need to take care that certain systems like EL6 don't reset the permissions of /dev/vboxdrvu -- the unrestricted device -- back to 0600 (we want 0666 here).
    And sure enough:
    matt@localhost ~ $ ls -Al /dev | grep vbox
    crw------- 1 root root 10, 59 Nov 8 11:46 vboxdrv
    crw------- 1 root root 10, 58 Nov 8 11:46 vboxdrvu
    drwxr-x--- 3 root vboxusers 60 Nov 8 11:46 vboxusb/
    I've changed the permissions on /dev/vboxdrvu to 0666, and the VirtuaBox log is not longer getting filled with the
    Failed to open "/dev/vboxdrvu", errno=13, rc=VERR_VM_DRIVER_NOT_ACCESSIBLE
    error message.  I'll check back in here once I've had enough time to assess my Windows 7 guest's stability.

  • What are the host network requirements for a 2012 R2 failover cluster using fiber channel?

    I've seen comments on here regarding how the heartbeat signal isn't really required anymore - is that true?  We started using Hyper-V in its infancy and have upgraded gleefully every step of the way.  With 2012 R2, we also upgraded from 1gb iSCSI
    to 8GB Fiber Channel.  Currently, I have three NICs in use on each host.  One for "No cluster communication" on it's own VLAN.  Another for "Allow cluster network communication on this network" but NOT allowing clients, on
    a different VLAN.  And lastly the public network which allows cluster comms and clients on it (public VLAN).
    Is it still necessary to have all three of these NICs in use?  If the heartbeat isn't necessary any more, is there any reason to not have two public IPs and do away with the rest of the network?  (two for fault tolerance)  Does Live Migration
    still use Ethernet if FC is available?  I wasn't sure what all has changed with these requirements since Hyper-V first came out.
    If it matters, we have 5 servers w/160GB RAM, 8 NICs, dual HBAs connected to redundant FC switches, going to two SANs.  We're running around 30 VMs right now.
    Can someone share their knowledge with me regarding the proper setup for my environment?  Many Thanks!

    Hi,
    You can setup cluster with a single network but that leaves you with single point of failure on the Networking front, it is still recommended to have a heartbeat network.
    Live migration would still happen though Ethernet, it has nothing to do with FC. Don't get confused, you had iSCSI for storage which used one of your VLAN and now you have FC for your storage.
    Your hardware specs looks good. You can set up the following networks -
    1. Public Network - Team two or more NICs (based on bandwidth aggregation)
    2. Heartbeat Network - Don't use teamed Adaptor
    3. Live Migration - Team two or more NICs (based on bandwidth aggregation)
    Plan properly and draw guidelines to visualize and to remove single point of failure at all points.
    Feel free to ask if you have some more queries.
    Regards
    Prabhash

    we also tried the following:
    2.     We compared OS/driver versions on both ( Oracle VM and Oracle Linux ) machines.
    Here is the table:
    Hostname OS HBA version
    zil01gscapp01 Oracle VM server release 2.21 8.03.00.10.02.02_k
    zil01gscmgt01 Oracle Enterprise Linux release 5.5 ( Carthage ) 8.03.01.04.05.05_k
    From this comparison we concluded that VM server HBA driver should be upgraded.
    We have downloaded from the QLOGIC site driver version 8.03.01.06 ( see the link )
    http://driverdownloads.qlogic.com/QLogicDriverDownloads_UI/SearchByProduct.aspx?ProductCategory=39&Product=937&Os=65
    By installing driver we got following error:

    case=install here2 main

    It looks like there is no kernel source in order to compile with the new driver, in other words Oracle VM comes wihout kernel source.
    Please, your advise/opinion about all above activities and further work.

  • LUN has gone AWOL - Solaris 10 x86, Emulex HBAs, IBM DS8300

    We're setting up a test environment for our backup software, currently running on Windows, but targeted for Solaris. This is also a test of our first Solaris x86 deployment.
    * HP DL580 G5 server.
    * Solaris 10 x86 10/08 w/patch cluster from ~March 18th.
    * One dual port Emulex HBA
    * IBM DS8300 SAN
    When we first set this up, we could see the one LUN in format. After adding in the IBM Multipathing software, the LUN disappeared and the FC devices are shown as unconfigured in `cfgadm -al`. We removed the IBM multipathing software, but still cannot see the LUN. Did a reconfiguration reboot and all that.

    Ok, so after that detailed message, my SAN admin just realised he hadn't assigned any LUNs to the server. :D
    The LUN that we had seen previously was an artifact from an earlier configuration.

    Hi all, i have two IBM x3560 brand new servers with V3700 IBM Storage. The Servers are connected to the storage through four SAS HBA adabters (two HBA's on each server). I want to create a two node guest Fileserver Failover Cluster. I can present the
    LUN's to the guest machines, but when i 'm running the cluster creation wizard it can't see any disk. I can see the disks on disk management console. Is there any way to achive this (the cluster creation) using my SAS HBA presented
    disks, or i have to use iSCSI to present the disks to my cluster?
    Thank you in advance, George

    1) Update to R2 and use shared VHDX which is a better way to go. See:

    2) If you want to stick with non-R2 (which is a BAD idea b/c tons of reasons) you can spawn an iSCSI target on top of your storage, make it clustered and make it provide LUs to your guest VMs. See:

    3) Use third-party software providing clustered storage (active-active) out-of-box.
    I would strongly recommend to upgrade to R2 and use shared VHDX.

  • V-HBA Guest VM cannot Live Migration

    Hi All,
    I'm using Windows Server 2012 Data Center OS and configured the for the hyper-V server role with Fail-over cluster (4 Node – Cluster).
    Each Physical server installed with Two Qlogic HBA Adapters.
    We have configured following configuration on hyper-v Server and SAN (HP) storage.
    Enabled the Virtual SAN Manager.
    Created Each Hyper-V Host Virtual Fiber channel Switch. Each Host configured two adapters. (Fibre Channel SAN 1 /  Fibre Channel SAN 2) .
    Using the HP storage and enabled the switch port level (N_Port ID Virtualization (NPIV).
    Created new VM and assign new two vHBA Adapters. Each adapter having two sets of wwn numbers.
    Each Adapter SET A wwn Address discovered by SAN switch and configured the zone . However SET B not discovered but we manually created the zone for SET B for both Adapters.
    Present the Storage to the VM and installed the MPIO. SAN disk visible on the VM disk management.
    During the live migrate the VM to different host I’m getting below error.
    Live migration of 'Virtual Machine TEST-Server' failed.
    Virtual machine migration operation for 'TEST-Server' failed at migration destination 'HV02'. (Virtual machine ID 378AE3E3-5A4F-4AE7-92F8-D47855C2D1C5)
    The virtual machine 'TEST-Server' is not compatible with physical computer 'HV02'. (Virtual machine ID 378AE3E3-5A4F-4AE7-92F8-D47855C2D1C5)
    Could not find a virtual fibre channel resource pool with ID 'New Fibre Channel SAN1'
    Could not find a virtual fibre channel resource pool with ID 'New Fibre Channel SAN2'
    Event ID : 21502
    I need some support from Expert for this issue. I’m trying to configure the Guest Cluster with HBA. The Quick Migration working fine but still failing with live migration. I want to resolve the live migration issue.

  • Live Migration failed using virtual HBA's and Guest Clustering

    Hi,
    We have a Guest Cluster Configuration on top of an Hyper-V Cluster. We are using Windows 2012 and Fiber Channel shared storage.
    The problem is regarding Live Migration. Some times when we move a virtual machine from node A to node B everything goes well but when we try to move back to node A Live Migration fails. What we can see is that when we move the VM from node A to B and Live
    Migration completes successfully the virtual ports remain active on node A, so when we try to move back from B to A Live Migration fails because the virtual ports are already there.
    This doesn't happen every time.
    We have checked the zoning between Host Cluster Hyper-V and the SAN, the mapping between physical HBA's and the vSAN's on the Hyper-V and everything is ok.
    Our doubt is, what is the best practice for zoning the vHBA on the VM's and our Fabric? We setup our zoning using an alias for the vHBA 1 and the two WWN (A and B) on the same object and an alias for the vHBA 2 and the correspondent WWN (A and B). Is it
    better to create an alias for vHBA 1 -> A (with WWN A) and other alias for vHBA 1 -> B (with WWN B)?
    The guest cluster VM's have 98GB of RAM each. Could it be a time out issue when Live Migration happen's and the virtual ports remain active on the source node? When everything goes well, the VM moves from node A with vHBA WWN A to node B and stays there
    with vHBA WWN B. On the source node the virtual ports should be removed automatically when the Live Migration completes. And that is the issue... sometimes the virtual ports (WWN A) stay active on the source node and when we try to move back the VM Live Migration
    fails.
    I hope You may understand the issue.
    Regards,
    Carlos Monteiro.

    Hi ,
    Hope the following link may help.
    To support live migration of virtual machines across Hyper-V hosts while maintaining Fibre Channel connectivity, two WWNs are configured for each virtual Fibre Channel adapter: Set A and Set B. Hyper-V automatically alternates between the Set A and Set B
    WWN addresses during a live migration. This ensures that all LUNs are available on the destination host before the migration and that no downtime occurs during the migration.

  • Can only bring some CSV's online on one specific host

    Hi.
    I have a three node Hyper-V (2012 R2) cluster.
    It has 12 CSV's connected. Two of the CSV's can only be brought online on one of the hosts. It seems, they are locked to that host in some way.
    The end result is that when I take that host down for maintenance, the two CSV's go offline and all VM's on them, crash.
    I suspect a particular VM of causing this but I don't know how to fix the problem.
    Anyone?
    Thanks in advance.
    /Michael

    What size are the CSV and is the storage connected via iSCSI, Fibre or SMB?
    If Fibre or iSCSI, check that the SAN is configured to allows all three hosts to connect to the storage group and each has access to all LUNS from a SAN point of view. If iSCSI check the Initiator and the MPIO settings on all three host etc.
    With regards to the Access denied, have a scan through this link it maybe of help and check if the VM worker process (VMMS) has the relevant permissions on the CSV volume.
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/askcore/archive/2014/10/01/virtual-machine-checkpoint-fails-with-access-denied-when-running-on-a-clustered-shared-volume.aspx
    If possible, I think i would attempt to move the VMs of the storage, remove and re-present it or increase the size of the other CSV. The number of CSV is down to design, connections the SAN can support and various other things and although 12 is a lot of
    CSV for three nodes, as mentioned above it should work and there are many cluster with a lot more.
    I know its a pain, but I would really try to run the validation wizard to check widows updates match etc. Also have you checked all firmware updates for HBAs or NICs etc?
    Kind Regards

  • Assigning HBA to a zone

    I have 2 zones on an s10 host which also has 2 FC HBA devices. The HBAs are connected to a SAN.
    I tried to add the HBA device name which is in the form /devices/pci@8,700000/SUNW,qlc@3,1/fp@0,0:devctl to the zonecfg as follows -
    global# luxadm -e port
    /devices/pci@8,700000/SUNW,qlc@2/fp@0,0:devctl CONNECTED
    /devices/pci@8,700000/SUNW,qlc@3,1/fp@0,0:devctl
    CONNECTED
    # zonecfg -z zone1
    zonecfg:zone1> add device
    zonecfg:zone1:device> set match=/devices/pci@8,700000/SUNW,qlc@3,1/fp@0,0:devctl
    zonecfg:zone1:device> end
    zonecfg:zone1> add device
    zonecfg:zone1:device> set match=/devices/pci@8,700000/SUNW,qlc@3/fp@0,0:devctl
    When I rebooted the zone, I get the following error on the zone console -
    # luxadm -e port
    Error: Could not retrieve device tree snapshot. - socal.
    Error: Could not retrieve device tree snapshot. - fp.
    Error: Could not retrieve device tree snapshot. - ifp.
    The global zone can still see the devices as 'Connected'. Does anyone know how to add HBA devices to s10 zones?
    Thanks,
    snygt

    can you list the device as seen from inside your zone?
    I couldn't find any documentation prohibiting the use of /devices/ but as this interface is declared as private (man -s 7FS devfs)I would use /dev/ instead.
    An other option is of course to mount the filesystem from the globalzone.

  • Xserve raid brocade switch, do I need xsan for multiple xserve raid with one gbic hba?

    So I have 3 xserve raids.  I would like to mount all 6 volumes on a single server with a 2 port hba. I have a brocade silkworm 3200, however the raid volumes will not mount.  The only thing I can think of is do i need xsan to accomplish this?  Initially I gathered it would be like additional resources on a normally data switch bu that does not seem to be the case.
    Thanks in advance for any assistance.

    No, you don't need XSAN for this. XSAN is for connecting one or more RAID units to more than one host. Since you only have one host, XSAN isn't an issue.
    You may need to look more closely at the switch configuration. Mac OS X doesn't support multipath (at least last time I checked), so you'll need to make sure that you're either using just one link from the server, or that you've setup zoning in the switch so that each link from the server sees a subset of the RAID volumes (e.g. three RAID volumes mapped to each link to the server).
    You may also need to check the RAID configurations to make sure you're not using LUN masking (a feature of earlier firmware versions).
    One test here would be to connect the server directly to each RAID controller in turn and see if you see the appropriate volumes. The chances are you do, which points back to the switch configuration being the issue.
